New Delhi: Jet fuel prices on Monday were hiked by a steep 5.3 per cent - the tenth straight increase this year -- to an all-time high, in line with a surge in global energy prices. The price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) -- the fuel that helps aeroplanes fly -- was hiked by Rs 6,188.25 per kilolitre, or 5.29 per cent, to Rs 1,23,039.71 per kl (Rs 123 per litre) in the national capital, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. This is the 10th straight increase in jet fuel prices this year.Meanwhile, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged for the 41st straight day after rising by a record Rs 10 per litre each.Jet fuel prices are revised on the 1st and 16th of every month, while petrol and diesel rates are revised daily, based on equivalent rates in the international market. Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by Rs 10 a litre between March 22 and April 6 and have remained on freeze thereafter. State-owned oil firms have offered no reason for keeping petrol and diesel prices on freeze while raising ATF rates. Petrol costs Rs 105.41 a litre in the national capital and diesel is priced at Rs 96.67 per litre. The increase in ATF price comes on the back of the steepest ever hike of 18.3 per cent (Rs 17,135.63 per kl) effected on March 16 and a 2 per cent (Rs 2,258.54 per kl) increase on April 1. Prices were increased by a marginal 0.2 per cent on April 16, followed by a Rs 3,649.13 per kl (3.2 per cent) hike on May 1.ATF in Mumbai now costs Rs 1,21,847.11 per kl, while it is priced at Rs 1,27,854.60 in Kolkata and Rs 1,27,286.13 in Chennai.Rates differ from state to state, depending on the incidence of local taxation.Fuel rates have been increased in India because energy prices globally have risen on the back of supply concerns following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and demand returning after being hit by the pandemic. India is 85 per cent dependent on imports to meet its oil needs. While oil prices have eased from a near 14-year high of USD 140 per barrel, it continues to trade above USD 100. On Monday, Brent - the world's most used benchmark - was trading at USD 109.76 per barrel.To compound things, the rupee has depreciated against the US dollar, making imports costlier. It closed at an all-time low of 77.55 to a US dollar on Friday. Forex markets were closed on Monday on the account of Buddha Purnima. Jet fuel, which makes up for almost 40 per cent of the running cost of an airline, has this year surged to new highs. ATF prices have increased every fortnight since the start of 2022. Seuol: South Korean airlines are set to impose record fuel surcharges on international routes in June in the wake of soaring jet fuel prices, industry sources said Monday. Starting June 1, the surcharge for one-way tickets on international routes will range from 37,700 won ($29.4) to 293,800 won, depending on the routes, Yonhap News Agency quoted an official from Korean Air Lines as saying.The planned increase will raise the surcharges to the highest Level 19 from the current Level 17. In April 2021, rising jet fuel prices forced local carriers to begin imposing fuel surcharges after a one-year hiatus. Fuel surcharges on international routes had stayed at zero since April 2020 due to the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. If the average jet fuel price on the Singapore spot market rises over $1.50 per gallon during the past month, South Korean airlines are allowed to impose fuel surcharges starting one month later. If jet fuel prices drop below the threshold, no surcharge is collected. Jet fuel prices averaged $3.36 per gallon on the Singaporean market for the one month from April 16 to May 15. Meanwhile, fuel surcharges on domestic routes will rise to 17,600 won in the coming month from 14,300 won in May.—IANS

The airline has appointed Prabh Sharan Singh as chief digital officer, H R Jagannath as vice president of engineering, Mark Turner as vice president of inflight product and services and Vishesh Khanna as vice president of sales, distribution and customer engagement, it said in the statementThe airline said Singh will take charge on June 1, Jagannath has taken charge on Monday, Turner will take charge on June 15 and Khanna will join the airline some time in July. Singh is currently a senior vice president at WNS Global Services. "His (Singh) rich experience spanning nearly 20 years includes stints at Etihad Airways, where he worked as strategy and portfolio lead within the carrier's digital technology and innovation division, and at Kingfisher Airlines, where he worked as general manager commercial alliances," the airline mentioned. Jagannath has over 40 years of aviation experience and he most recently served as chief executive officer of Air India Engineering Services, it noted. Turner -- who also has more than 40 years of aviation experience -- led Jet Airways' inflight services team between 2008 and 2011 and has held senior management positions at Gulf Air, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Fiji Airways, it said. Khanna joins the airline from VFS Global Ltd, where he currently serves as Business Head e-Visa, it mentioned. "He (Khanna) has nearly 30 years of experience in the aviation and travel sectors across B2C (business-to-customer) and B2B (business-to-business) sales, having held executive positions at various airlines in the past," it noted. New Delhi: All India Jet Airways' Officers and Staff Association on Thursday said it has filed an appeal before the NCLAT against Jalan-Kalrock consortium's resolution plan for the airline. In October 2020, the airline's Committee of Creditors (CoC) approved the resolution plan submitted by the consortium of the UK's Kalrock Capital and the UAE-based entrepreneur Murari Lal Jalan.The plan was later cleared by the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Last week, Jet Airways' air operator certificate was revalidated by the aviation regulator DGCA, paving the way for the relaunch of the airline, which was grounded in April 2019 due to financial woes. "The resolution plan is contingent on many hypotheticals about the use of crucial assets of the former Jet Airways, including its property, flight slots, and most importantly, its workers and employees," All India Jet Airways' Officers and Staff Association President Kiran Pawaskar said in a statement.In its petition before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), the association has prayed for complete payments of the gratuity, unpaid wages, privilege leave encashment, bonus from April 2018 to June 2019 and retrenchment compensation to all workers and employees, the statement said.Among others, the association has demanded that any employee re-hired by the resolution applicant or the Monitoring Committee are paid their gratuity, unpaid wages, privilege leave encashment, bonus and retrenchment compensation as per their entitlements and that any signed document for the waiver/forfeiture of these amounts not be enforced against them.Currently, the airline, which is expected to restart services in the coming months, is managed by the Monitoring Committee.Narayan Hariharan, former Senior Vice President of Jet Airways and legal advisor to employees, said the resolution plan is "precariously held together by a vague business plan".The airline is forcing workers to waive all their statutory rights they are owed, particularly gratuity, privilege leave, unpaid salary and bonus, the association claimed. The airline was earlier owned by Naresh Goyal and Gulf carrier Etihad. New Delhi: A SpiceJet flight heading towards Dubai from the national capital was diverted towards Karachi, Pakistan, on Tuesday due to some technical malfunctioning in the aircraft."The SpiceJet B737 aircraft operating flight SG-11 (Delhi-Dubai) was diverted to Karachi due to an indicator light malfunctioning," a senior airline official told IANS.He said that the aircraft landed safely in Karachi and passengers were safely disembarked."No emergency was declared and the aircraft made a normal landing," the official said.The official clarified that there was no earlier report of any malfunction with the aircraft."Passengers have been served refreshments," he said. Meanwhile, a replacement aircraft is being sent to Karachi that will take the passengers to Dubai.Notably, this is the third time in recent days that SpiceJet aircraft had to either make an emergency landing or divert to some other location.On June 19, a Delhi-bound aircraft, with 185 passengers on board, was forced to make an emergency landing in Patna after one of the wings caught fire. On takeoff, during rotation, the cockpit crew suspected a bird hit on one of the engines.As a precautionary measure and as per SOP, the Captain shutdown the affected engine and decided to return to Patna.In the second incident on July 2, the crew of a Jabalpur-bound SpiceJet aircraft, while passing at 5,000 ft, noticed smoke in the cabin after which the pilots decided to return to Delhi.—IANS

Cases of violation of the 10 km Confidence Building Major (CBM) line have been reported in this area in recent days," the government sources told IANSAs per the sources, the IAF has taken strong measures to respond to these provocations as it has moved its most powerful fighter jets, including the MiG-29 and Mirage 2000, to advanced bases from where they can respond to Chinese movements within minutes.It seems that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is tense over the upgradation of IAF infrastructure in the Ladakh region, they added.Sources further said that the IAF is responding to these actions in a "calibrated manner" and is also monitoring Chinese flight patterns in the area where they are flying at both low and high altitudes.India is working at a brisk pace to upgrade its military infrastructure in Ladakh after China tried to unilaterally change the status quo on the LAC in the April-May 2020 time frame.The provocation by Chinese fighter jets began around June 24-25 when a Chinese fighter jet flew very close to a point of friction in eastern Ladakh.After that, there were several CBM violations between the two sides on the LAC near Chumar sector and this has been going on since then, they asserted, adding that the IAF, including its Rafale fighter jets, is also doing extensive flying in the eastern Ladakh region. —IANS

Mumbai:&nbsp;Virtually written off following massive financial problems, Jet Airways is now ready for its reincarnation -- this time under a new management -- come September.Paving the way for the private carrier's revival, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted the revalidated Air Operator Certificate to the new owners, Jalan Kalrock Consortium (JKC), on May 20.The JKC fulfilled all the conditions laid down in the NCLT-approved resolution plan for the revival of the airline, founded in April 1992 and launched in 1993 by businessman Naresh Goyal, and shut after 27 years in April 2019.The Jet Airways now hopes to launch commercial operations in September with fresh funding of more than Rs 1,300 crore over the next couple of years, changed ownership with a new management, and a few other changes to re-capture its market.Though starting with a fleet of 11 aircraft of the Jet Airways that got transferred as assets to the kitty of the new entity, these planes are unlikely to be deployed for commercial operations, said official sources.However, the company is at an advanced stage of discussions with lessors and aircraft manufacturers before finalising its choice of aircraft and fleet plans -- a critical decision for any airline -- though officials remained tight-lipped."Jet Airways shall be a ‘smart' full-service carrier, with a two-class cabin configuration, including a world-class business class and an evolved economy class in tune with the demands of the ‘digital age' customers," explained an official spokesperson.A high-level source made it clear that Jet Airways will not be "a small or marginal airline, but will grow-to-scale", though he kept all plans secret for the carrier that once strutted with a fleet strength of 124 big and small, wide-body and narrow-body aircraft.Prior to suspension of operations over three years ago, Jet Airways had grabbed more than one-fifth of the country's aviation market, with 65-plus destinations in India and globally, as many others like Air India, Indian Airlines, or private competitors like East West, ModiLuft, Sahara, NEPC and more crash landed by the wayside.This time, the scenario is much different considering rising operational costs, wary customers just stirring out after a two-year Covid pandemic halt, the once floundering Air India now in the ‘safe arms' of Tata Group, and other airlines going determinedly for their share, etc.The revived Jet Airways has taken the first baby-steps of its ‘historic revival' with over 250 staffers, including nearly 75 per cent former employees, onboard, and now sifting through thousands of applications at various levels, with hiring of pilots, engineers, technicians, etc. to happen soon.The changes will continue with certain things undisturbed -- like the ‘Jet Brand', its globally recognisable ‘Flying Sun' logo, the familiar aircraft livery, the eye-catching cabin crew uniforms, etc., but the airline logo has been slightly tweaked "to reflect an evolved, modern Jet Airways that is prepared to win in the Digital Age".Officials concede that it will be a challenge as there are high ‘expectations' from the Jet Airways brand, and the airline would try to exceed the customer's hopes by attempting to excel in all departments.As Murari Lal Jalan, the new owner of Jet Airways and Lead Member of the JKC, remarked recently: "We are now at the brink of creating history by bringing India's most-loved airline back to the skies. New Delhi: Aviation regulator DGCA on Wednesday ordered SpiceJet airline to operate only 50 per cent of its flights for eight weeks. "In view of findings of various spot checks, inspections and the reply to the show cause notice submitted by SpiceJet, for continued sustenance of safe and reliable air transport service, the number of departures of SpiceJet are restricted to 50 per cent of the number of departures approved under Summer schedule 2022 for a period of eight weeks," said the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in an order. During these eight weeks, the airline would be subjected to "enhanced surveillance" by the DGCA. A SpiceJet spokesperson said: "We are in receipt of the DGCA order and will act as per directions of the regulator. Due to the current lean travel season, SpiceJet, like other airlines, had already rescheduled its flight operations. Hence, there will be absolutely no impact on our flight operations. We want to reassure our passengers and travel partners that our flights will operate as per schedule in the coming days and weeks. There will be no flight cancellation as a consequence of this order."The DGCA also said: "Any increase in the number of departures beyond 50 per cent would be subject to the airline demonstrating to the satisfaction of DGCA that it has sufficient technical support and financial resource to safely and efficiently undertake such enhanced capacity." The regulator also said that "it was deduced that SpiceJet failed to establish a safe, efficient and reliable air transport service" and a showcause notice was issued on July 5.It said that it has been observed that SpiceJet is taking measures to arrest the trend of incidents, however, it needs to sustain these efforts for a safe and reliable air transport service. In response, the SpiceJet spokesperson said: "DGCA's observation that SpiceJet is taking measures for arresting the trend of incidents is very encouraging and we will continue to work under the close guidance of the regulator."The order said that the reported incidents from April 1 to July 5 were reviewed and it was observed that there is poor internal safety oversight and inadequate maintenance actions which have resulted in degradation of the safety margins. Financial assessment carried out by the DGCA in September 2021 revealed that SpiceJet is operating on cash and carry and suppliers are not being paid on a regular basis leading to the shortrage of spares, said the aviation regulator.—IANS

New Delhi: Aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has received requests from the lessor for deregistration of three aircraft of budget carrier SpiceJet.Leasing firm Awas Ireland Limited filed the requests against three Boeing 737 aircraft on July 29.The planes- VT-SYW, VT-SYX and VT-SYY, are stationed at Varanasi and Amritsar.The deregistration requests of flights have been filed under Irrevocable Deregistration and Export Request Authorisations (IDERA) and sources said that it is usually filed if a lessor and airline fail to reach a payment negotiation.The deregistration process is generally allowed after the aviation regulator checks if the aircraft has any pending dues from tax authorities and airports.The government has taken measures to strengthen the ecosystem for aircraft leasing and financing in India. New Delhi:&nbsp;SpiceJet on Tuesday said it has entered into an agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and cleared all outstanding principal dues of the airport operator. "With this, SpiceJet will no longer remain on 'cash and carry' at AAI-run airports across the country and will revert to advance payment mechanism for daily flight operations," the airline's statement noted. The Centre-run AAI had in 2020 put SpiceJet on a 'cash and carry' basis as the carrier was unable to clear its previous dues. In the 'cash and carry' model, the airline has to make daily payments to the AAI for various charges -- navigation, landing, parking, and others -- to operate flights. SpiceJet said on Tuesday: "In another big boost for the airline, AAI will release SpiceJet's INR 50 crore bank guarantee following the airline clearing all its principal dues. This will result in additional liquidity for the airline." SpiceJet has been making losses for the last four years. It incurred net losses of Rs 316 crore, Rs 934 crore and Rs 998 crore in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively. In the April-December period of 2021, the airline posted a net loss of Rs 1,248 crore. The airline is yet to declare results for January-March period of 2022. Aviation regulator DGCA had on July 27 ordered SpiceJet to operate not more than 50 per cent of its flights, which were approved for summer schedule, for a period of eight weeks. On July 6, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had issued a show-cause notice to SpiceJet following at least eight incidents of technical malfunction in its aircraft since June 19.—PTI

New Delhi: Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has received requests to deregister two more B737 aircraft leased to the carrier SpiceJet . 
The requests for deregistration have been made by Irish lessor Horizon Aviation.
This is the third such instance in which the regulator received deregistration requests of aircrafts in the past few weeks leased to SpiceJet . DGCA
In the present case, the DGCA received the requests of deregistration of aircrafts on August 25 and both the planes are stationed at New Delhi.
The deregistration requests of flights has been filed under Irrevocable Deregistration and Export Request Authorisations (IDERA) and sources said that it is usually filed if a lessor and airline fail to reach a payment negotiation.
Earlier, the budget carrier SpiceJet had said that it plans to replace all its older Boeing aircraft with the new Max model in a phased manner and till the next calendar year, it will induct around 20 new Max planes into its fleet.
Deregistration process is generally allowed after the aviation regulator checks if the aircraft has any pending dues from tax authorities and airports.
The government has taken measures to strengthen the ecosystem for aircraft leasing and financing in India.&nbsp;

Rajkot (The Hawk): In Jetpur town in Gujarat's Rajkot, a woman was slain while attempting to protect her son from his paramour's spouse.
According to the complainant Vidhan Solanki, he had an affair with the wife of a Manu Patolia, and their families had feuded in the past.
Following a deal made between the two families, Vidhan ended his contact with Manu's wife and gave money to the latter's family.
Tuesday night, Manu showed up at Vidhan's residence and began pleading for a settlement that would have included an additional Rs 2 lakh, but the complainant's mother Rekhaben refused.
Manu was furious and chased Vidhan to beat him; when Rekhaben tried to stop him, he stabbed her and went off.
Rekhaben was brought dead by the doctor at the government hospital after Vidhan hurried her there.

Washington: An international team of scientists has observed the narrowing of a quasar jet for the first time by using a network of radio telescopes across the world. The results suggest that the narrowing of the jet is independent of the activity level of the galaxy which launched it.
Nearly every galaxy hosts a supermassive black hole in its center. In some cases, enormous amounts of energy are released by gas falling towards the black hole, creating a phenomenon known as a quasar. Quasars emit narrow, collimated jets of material at nearly the speed of light. But how and where quasar jets are collimated has been a long-standing mystery.
An international team led by Hiroki Okino, a graduate student at the University of Tokyo, and including members from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Kogakuin University, Hachinohe National College of Technology, and Niigata University, captured an image with the highest angular resolution to date that shows the deepest part of the jet in a bright quasar known as 3C 273.
The team found that the jet flowing from the quasar narrows down over a very long distance. This narrowing part of the jet continues incredibly far, well beyond the area where the black hole's gravity dominates. The results show that the structure of the jet is similar to jets launched from nearby galaxies with a low luminosity active nucleus. This would indicate that the collimation of the jet is independent of the activity level in the host galaxy, providing an important clue to unravelling the inner workings of jets. —ANI

Motion to elect Jethabhai Bharwad as Deputy Speaker was made by Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai, supported by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rishkesh Patel, and put to a vote. Congress concurred with this plan.
Mavji Desai (Dhanera seat), Dhavalsinh Zala (Bayad), and Dharmednrasinh Vaghela (Vaghodia), three independent MLAs, met with Governor Acharya Devvrat on Tuesday to express their support for the government.
The single-day session will have two sittings, the first of which will see the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The governor will address the House during the second session.
Congress omitted to designate a leader for its parliamentary party. Instead of electing one of the 17 MLAs at the Congress Legislative Party meeting last Sunday in the presence of observer B.K. Hariprasad, the MLAs voted a resolution allowing the party high command to choose the leader. The high command has not yet decided on a name.

New Delhi: Officials reported on Tuesday that police had detained a passenger accused of misbehaving with a female cabin crew member aboard a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Hyderabad.
They added that Sushant Srivastava, the airline's security officer, filed the complaint on the cabin crew member's behalf.
On Monday at 4:39 p.m., a PCR call was received after an allegation that a passenger on SpiceJet Flight-8133 from Delhi to Hyderabad had molested a cabin crew member. A top police officer has revealed that the call came from SpiceJet's security officer, Srivastava.—Inputs from Agencies

New Delhi: One pilot lost his life after two Indian Air Force fighter jets – a Sukhoi Su-30 and a Mirage 2000 – crashed during a training exercise earlier today in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena, officials said on Saturday.
Officials said that body parts of one pilot have been retrieved while two other pilots in the Sukhoi who ejected from their plane were rescued and taken to the hospital in a helicopter. While one aircraft crashed in Morena in Madhya Pradesh, the other crashed and landed in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur.
“The possible mid-air collision between the two aircraft took place when they were flying a simulated combat mission at very high speeds. More details would come out in the court of inquiry,” Defence sources said.
The Sukhoi had two pilots, while the Mirage had one pilot, defence sources said. Both aircraft are used on the frontlines by the Indian Air Force. The two pilots on the Sukhoi managed to eject and were taken to the hospital in a helicopter. The Mirage pilot lost his life and his relatives have been informed about the incident. “There was a fire reported by some people here and we also received information that parts of two jets -Mirage and Sukhoi- that had taken off from Gwalior were seen fallen down on the ground here. As per IAF, one aircraft had two pilots, while the other had one. Two pilots have been safely rescued, while the body parts of the third pilot have been found,” Superintendent of Police, Morena, Ashutosh Bagree said from the site. Speaking about wreckage of aircraft found in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur, which was earlier reported to be from a charter plane, the SP Morena said details were being collected. Officials and local administration are present at the spot. Defence sources said that an IAF court of inquiry will establish whether the accident happened due to a mid-air collision or not.
Sources further added that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in touch with Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari to gather details on the crash.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said in a tweet, “The news of the crash of Sukhoi-30 and Mirage-2000 aircraft of the Air Force near Kolaras in Morena is very sad. I have instructed the local administration to cooperate with the Air Force in quick rescue and relief work. I pray to God that the pilots of the planes are safe.
