I have seen the rule going beyond constitutional system. I have seen a situation where there is no rule of law, but a ruler," Dhankhar said during his visit to Udaipur where he attended several events.He made his remarks while visiting the Pratap Gaurav Kendra at a press conference.He said that the rule in West Bengal doesn't match with the standards of a democratic set-up, and that he was yet to come to terms with the violence that broke out in the state after the latest assembly polls."I cannot define the furious violence that occurred in the state after elections. I have seen deaths, rape. I have seen a state where you pay the price for voting in a democratic system with your life. I have seen it with my eyes and felt the pain," Dhankhar said.—PTI

The Election Commission announced that Dhankhar -- the NDA nominee, emerged victorious in the Vice Presidential election in which he was pitted against the Opposition's candidate Margaret Alva. As the term of incumbent Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10, the members of both houses of the Parliament on Saturday voted to elect the next Vice-President. Utpal Kumar Singh, returning officer for the vice presidential election, said that of total 780 electors, only 725 voted for the vice presidential poll. Of total 725 votes, 15 votes were found invalid and 710 votes valid. As per the Election Commission, Dhankhar secured a total of 528 first preference votes, while Alva got only 182 votes.—IANS

A signed copy of the certificate was handed over to the Union Home Secretary by senior Deputy Election Commissioner Dharmendra Sharma and Narendra N Butolia, senior Principal Secretary in the EC, the poll panel said. The signed copy will be read out at the time of oath taking ceremony of the new vice president on August 11. The term of incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10. Dhankhar won with a huge vote share of 74.36 per cent, the highest in the last six vice-presidential elections, with 528 votes against Alva's 182 votes.—PTI

New Delhi: Senior Congress lawmaker Jairam Ramesh claimed Thursday that he was not consulted at all about the recent hiring of individuals connected with committees under the jurisdiction of the Rajya Secretariat, despite the fact that he chairs one of these committees.

Kannur (Kerala): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will arrive in Kerala's Kannur on May 22 to meet his school teacher Ratna Nair. Nair is a retired teacher from Chittorgarh Sainik School in Rajasthan, living at Panoor in Kannur district with her brother. The teacher has started preparations to welcome the vice president at her house near the Kargil bus stop in Panoor while the police have also made security arrangements ahead of the vice President's visit. Speaking to ANI, Nair said that she taught Dhankhar as a teacher at Chittorgarh Sainik School in Rajasthan.  "I retired as the principal of Navodaya School, Kannur. I remember my brilliant student Jagadeep, who came from a rural background. I also taught his brother," she said. "Dhankhar left school in 1968. When he became the Governor of West Bengal, he called and sought blessings from me. I was also invited to the swear-in ceremony as the Vice President of India but could not attend due to ill health," Nair added. Dhankhar was sworn in as India's 14th vice president on August 11, 2022. Born on May 18, 1951, in an agrarian household in a village in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, Dhankhar completed his school education at Sainik School, Chittorgarh. After finishing his graduation in physics, he pursued LLB from the University of Rajasthan. Despite being a first-generation professional, he became one of the leading lawyers in the state. Dhankhar was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019. He resigned from the post of West Bengal Governor on July 17 after his name was announced as the vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). (ANI)
