Beed: Six people were killed after a car and a tempo collided head-on in Maharashtra's Beed district on Sunday morning, police said. The accident took place around 5.30 am on Manjarsumba-Patoda highway, they said. As per preliminary information, a family from Pune was going to Jiwachiwadi village in Kej tehsil in the car to attend a marriage ceremony when their vehicle and the tempo hit each other, a police official said. Five members of the family and one other person were killed, the official said. Police had to use a crane to separate the two vehicles, he said. The tempo driver fled from the spot after the accident, but later surrendered at Patoda police station, the official said. The deceased have been identified as Ramhari Chintaman Kute (40), Sunita Ramhari Kute (38), Rushikesh Ramhari Kute (19), Akash Ramhari Kute (15), Priyanka Ramhari Kute (17), all residents of Jiwachiwadi village now living in Pune, and Radhika Sugriv Kedar (14), belonging to Sarni Sangvi village in Kej taluka, the police said.&nbsp;

Washington: In a new study, two University of Chicago astrophysicists laid out a method for using pairs of colliding black holes to measure how fast the universe is expanding, and thus understand how the universe evolved, what it is made out of, and where it's going.
In particular, the scientists think the new technique, which they call a "spectral siren," may be able to tell us about the otherwise elusive "teenage" years of the universe. The findings of the study were published in the journal Physical Review Letters.
A cosmic ruler
A major ongoing scientific debate is exactly how fast the universe is expanding--a number called the Hubble constant. The different methods available so far yield slightly different answers, and scientists are eager to find alternate ways to measure this rate. Checking the accuracy of this number is especially important because it affects our understanding of fundamental questions like the age, history and makeup of the universe.
The new study offers a way to make this calculation, using special detectors that pick up the cosmic echoes of black hole collisions.
Occasionally, two black holes will slam into each other--an event so powerful that it literally creates a ripple in space-time that travels across the universe. Here on Earth, the U.S. Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Italian Observatory Virgo can pick up those ripples, which are called gravitational waves.
Over the past few years, LIGO and Virgo have collected the readings from almost 100 pairs of black holes colliding. The signal from each collision contains information about how massive the black holes were. But the signal has been traveling across space, and during that time the universe has expanded, which changes the properties of the signal. "For example, if you took a black hole and put it earlier in the universe, the signal would change and it would look like a bigger black hole than it really is," explained UChicago astrophysicist Daniel Holz, one of the two authors on the paper.
If scientists can figure out a way to measure how that signal changed, they can calculate the expansion rate of the universe. The problem is calibration: How do they know how much it changed from the original?
In their new paper, Holz and first author Jose Maria Ezquiaga suggest that they can use our newfound knowledge about the whole population of black holes as a calibration tool. For example, current evidence suggests that most of the detected black holes have between five and 40 times the mass of our sun.
"So we measure the masses of the nearby black holes and understand their features, and then we look further away and see how much those further ones appear to have shifted," said Ezquiaga, a NASA Einstein Postdoctoral Fellow and Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics Fellow working with Holz at UChicago. "And this gives you a measure of the expansion of the universe."
The authors dub it the "spectral siren" method, a new approach to the 'standard siren' method which Holz and collaborators have been pioneering. (The name is a reference to the 'standard candle' methods also used in astronomy.)
The scientists are excited because in the future, as LIGO's capabilities expand, the method may provide a unique window into the "teenage" years of the universe--about 10 billion years ago--that are hard to study with other methods.
Researchers can use the cosmic microwave background to look at the very earliest moments of the universe, and they can look around at galaxies near our own galaxy to study the universe's more recent history. But the in-between period is harder to reach, and it's an area of special scientific interest.
"It's around that time that we switched from dark matter being the predominant force in the universe to dark energy taking over, and we are very interested in studying this critical transition," said Ezquiaga.
The other advantage of this method, the authors said, is that there are fewer uncertainties created by gaps in our scientific knowledge. "By using the entire population of black holes, the method can calibrate itself, directly identifying and correcting for errors," Holz said. The other methods used to calculate the Hubble constant rely on our current understanding of the physics of stars and galaxies, which involves a lot of complicated physics and astrophysics. This means the measurements might be thrown off quite a bit if there's something we don't yet know.
By contrast, this new black hole method relies almost purely on Einstein's theory of gravity, which is well-studied and has stood up against all the ways scientists have tried to test it so far. The more readings they have from all black holes, the more accurate this calibration will be. "We need preferably thousands of these signals, which we should have in a few years, and even more in the next decade or two," said Holz. "At that point it would be an incredibly powerful method to learn about the universe." —ANI

Saharanpur (The Hawk): A collision between a truck and a van on Uttar Pradesh's Delhi-Yamunotri Highway has left six dead and one critically injured.&nbsp;
The accident occurred on Sunday night when the victims were returning home in Mirzapur village.
While four people died on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries in a hospital on Monday morning, Superintendent of Police (Dehat) Suraj Rai told PTI.
The van was completely damaged in the collision.
The deceased were identified as Adil (25), his pregnant wife Asma (24), Mashkoor (26), his wife Rukhsar (27), Rihanna (38) and Sultana (35).
The truck driver fled from the spot while the bodies have been sent for postmortem.&nbsp;

Gurugram: Four students were killed and another was seriously injured after their car collided with a bus in front of a petrol pump in Khetawas village on the Gurugram-Farrukhnagar road on Monday, police said.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the petrol pump.&nbsp;
The victims were identified as Paras, Abhishek, Jaswant and Abeen, residents of Faridabad, Mathura and Agra, all aged between 22 and 24.
The injured is yet to be identified.
According to the police, the accident took place when the victims on board the Maruti Baleno car were returning to Faridabad after attending a birthday party in Farrukhnagar, 22 km from the city.&nbsp;
"When the driver took a U-turn in front of the petrol pump, a bus coming from the opposite direction hit the vehicle from the rear side. All four victims reportedly were declared dead in the hospital," Jitender Kumar, SHO, Farrukhnagar police station, said.
The bus was carrying Maruti company staff and was heading towards Gurugram from Farrukhnagar.
The bus driver fled, the police said.&nbsp;

The accident happened on Sunday at midnight.&nbsp;
According to police, the accident happened when the bus attached to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC)rammed into a truck transporting stones from behind at the Mylapura Gate near Hoskote.
The couple died on the spot and three children were severely injured. The condition of two persons is critical. The injured have been shifted to a private hospital.
The bus was travelling from Balijakhandriga city to <a href="https://telanganatoday.com/tag/Bengaluru" target="_self">Bengaluru</a>. The driver suffered minor injuries and survived. The identity of the deceased couple from Andhra Pradesh was yet ascertained.

Bahraich (UP): As many as 6 people were killed while 15 others were injured after an Uttar Pradesh roadways bus collided with a truck on the Lucknow-Bahraich highway on Wednesday. 
According to Dinesh Chandra, District Magistrate, the incident took place close to 4:30 am when a speeding truck broadsided a Lucknow depot bus.&nbsp;
Six people died on the spot and 15 others who were injured were rushed to a hospital, where the condition of four was stated to be critical. Those killed were yet to be identified.
The bus was going to Rupaideeha from Lucknow, while the truck was on its way to Lucknow from Bahraich, the DM said. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot with the vehicle. 
Police are probing the matter and searching for the absconding driver with the help of CCTV footage from nearby areas.&nbsp;

Hyderabad (The Hawk): On Saturday, there was a road accident in the Nizamabad district of Telangana that resulted in the deaths of three people.
A car and a truck were involved in the collision that took place on the national highway close to the village of Chepur in the Armoor mandal.
According to the police, who cited an eyewitness account, a collision occurred when a car that was trying to pass another vehicle collided with a truck that was travelling in the other direction, resulting in the immediate deaths of three people.
The authorities hurried to the scene and encountered significant difficulty extricating the bodies of the victims from the wreckage of the vehicle.
The names of the deceased have been revealed to be Ashok, Mohan, and Ramesh, all of whom were natives of Nandipet.

Gautam Buddha Nagar: One child was killed and as many as 28 people were left injured after a bus and a truck collided in Uttar Pradesh's Noida.
Gautam Buddha Nagar Police told the mediapersons that one child has been killed while 28 people are injured in the accident. The incident happened at the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, near the village Ladpura area, under the Kasna police station.
As per the police, the deceased has been identified as Aashish (11) and his body has been sent for post-mortem. All the injured people are being treated at the hospital and further investigation is underway, the police said. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the incident and expressed condolences to the deceased and his bereaved family members.

Dhaka: At least 14 people were killed and 12 others injured following a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van in Bangladesh's Sylhet district on Wednesday, a senior police official said. Md Abul Hossain, inspector at Sylhet's Dakshin Surma Police Station, told Xinhua news agency that all of the deceased were construction workers. Some workers were also critically injured in the road accident that occurred at around 6 a.m. in the district, some 240 km northeast of capital Dhaka, said the official. All the injured were rushed to local hospitals and clinics, he said, adding that the cause of the accident is under investigation. Bangladesh has one of the highest fatality rates for road accidents in the world mainly due to shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles, violation of traffic rules by drivers, and lack of monitoring of the traffic department. As many as 328 people were killed and 565 others injured in 304 road accidents from April 15 to 29, during the Eid al-Fitr festival rush in Bangladesh. —IANS

Ottawa: At least 15 people were killed, while 10 others have been rushed to hospital after a collision between a semi-trailer truck and bus full of seniors near the town of Carberry in Canada's Manitoba on Thursday (local time), Canada-based CBC News reported citing RCMP Manitoba Commanding Officer Assistant Commissioner Rob Hill. While addressing a press conference, Hill said the 25 people with the majority of them being seniors were travelling in the bus that collided with a semi-trailer truck. The bus was heading from the western Manitoba city of Dauphin, CBC News reported. Rob Hill said that 10 injured people have been taken to the hospital. However, he said that casualties might continue to change. Hill said, "Sadly this is a day in Manitoba and across Canada that will be remembered as one of tragedy and incredible sadness," CBC News reported. Hill added that many people in the Dauphin region are waiting for news about their loved ones. He said, "To all those waiting, I can't imagine how difficult it is not knowing if the person you love the most will be making it home tonight. I'm so sorry we cannot get you the definitive answers you need more quickly." Supt Rob Lasson, an officer in charge of major crime services, said Mounties were sent to the accident site at 11:43 am (local time), the report said. Lasson said that an initial probe has revealed that the bus carrying the seniors was heading to the south on Highway 5 and was crossing the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway when it got hit by the semi. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has offered condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the crash. Taking to his official Twitter handle, he stated, "The news from Carberry, Manitoba is incredibly tragic. I'm sending my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones today, and I'm keeping the injured in my thoughts. Jaipur: Four people, including a doctor, his wife and sister-in-law, were killed when the scooty they were riding was hit and dragged during a collision between a container and a tractor-trolley in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district.  The accident was reported at 11.30 p.m. on Monday in the Kaithwara area of ??the district.  Police station in-charge Prabhu Dayal said, "Three scooty-riders died in the collision of a container and a tractor-trolley. Dr. Tareef (28), his nurse wife Nazreen, his sister-in-law Afreen (11) and container driver Anees (27), residents of Talamba police station Nuh of Haryana, died in the accident. Scooty riders were going from Khoh to Kaithwada."
While hitting the tractor-trolley, the container dragged the scooty-riders.  The tractor-trolley driver fled from the spot after the accident.  All the four bodies have been kept in the mortuary of Kaithwara Hospital and further investigations are in progress.

Chennai: Two panchayat presidents were killed after their car rammed into a stationary trailer-lorry on Madurai-Trichy national highway in Tamil Nadu's Pudukkottai district on Thursday.
According to police, the incident took place when four men were proceeding to Chennai for a meeting of panchayat presidents from across the state.  When the car reached the highway near Vanathirupathi, the driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed into a median and before hitting a parked lorry.  The deceased have been identified as V. Karuppusamy (52) and K. Abhiman Raj (53).  Two other panchayat presidents Shankar and Samuthram were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at Pudukkottai District Hospital.  Police said that apparently, the car driver Bhaskaran -- who is among the injured-- dozed off leading to the accident.
