Bengaluru: Congress on Monday announced M Nagaraju Yadav and K Abdul Jabbar as its candidates for the biennial election to seven seats of Karnataka legislative council, to be elected by the members of legislative assembly, scheduled for June 3. Tuesday is the last date to file nominations for the polls.Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal for the candidature of Yadav and Jabbar, the All India Congress Committee said in a release. While, Yadav is the former chairman of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Jabbar is currently the president of the minority cell of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and a former MLC.The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal-Secular have not announced their candidates yet. The election is necessitated as the term of office of seven members expires on June 14.The seats will be falling vacant due to the retirement of MLCs -- Laxman Sangappa Savadi and Lahar Singh Siroya of BJP; Ramappa Timmapur, Allum Veerabhadrappa, Veena Achaiah S of Congress; and H M Ramesha Gowda and Narayana Swamy K V of JD-S. According to official sources, in this election, each MLC candidate will require a minimum of 29 votes to win, and on the basis of minimum votes required and tallying it with the strength of each party in the Legislative Assembly, the BJP is expected to win four seats, Congress two, and JD-S one. There were too many MLC ticket aspirants in the Congress party. State Congress president D K Shivakumar had earlier today said there were more than 200 aspirants for the two seats. There were also talks about differences between Shivakumar and Congress Legislature party leader Siddaramaiah regarding candidates the State unit had recommended to the high command. However, both leaders had rejected such speculation. Senior party leader and former Minister S R Patil was among the key aspirants for the ticket. Moradabad: A case was registered against Uttar Pradesh MLC and Samajwadi Party leader Lal Bihari Yadav in the Kanth police station of Moradabad for allegedly making indecent remarks on Lord Shiva. The case was registered after the Bajrang Dal workers complained about the remarks by the SP leader. Yadav has been booked under sections 153A and 153B of IPC. It was alleged that the SP MLC made indecent remarks against Shivling and Lord Shiva in a purported video.While registering a complaint, the Bajrang Dal leaders alleged that the Hindu sentiments were hurt by Lal Bihari Yadav. This comes amid the ongoing Gyanvapi row where the Hindu side claimed that a 'Shivling' was discovered within the premises of the mosque during the survey that was ordered by the Varanasi court. In a similar incident, BJP leader Nupur Sharma was suspended from the party after she made alleged controversial religious remarks during a TV show.—ANI

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party MLC and former BJP minister, Swami Prasad Maurya's personal secretary Sajjad and 12 others have been booked for molestation of a Dalit woman and attempt to murder her brothers in the Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow.
The accused have also been booked under SC/ST Act.
The complainant alleged that the incident took place at the former minister's house in Vipul Khand in Gomti Nagar in the night on October 9.
She said that she reached Maurya's house, and found Sajjad sitting in the room with the former minister.
"Sajjad shouted at me after seeing me and complained to the former minister that I was chasing him for the last two days," she alleged.
Sajjad and his men pointed pistols at me and my brothers.
A guard opened fire at my brother, but he was saved luckily as the fire missed. Sajjad even tore the dress of my younger sister and the private guards thrashed me," she alleged.
She said that a government gunner saved her and her family and made them sit in their car.
"Sajjad attempted to rape me and my sister who was accompanying me," she alleged.
However, MLC and SP Leader Swami Prasad Maurya said that Sajjad was not a member of his staff and just an unemployed youth running with him. "A case has been registered and the law must take its course," he said.&nbsp;

Saharanpur (The Hawk): The fourth son of Mohd Haji Iqbal, a former BSP MLC, was detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police as he checked in for a flight to Dubai at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.
He carried a Rs 50,000 reward for information that led to his capture.
Suraj Rai, the rural Saharanpur superintendent of police, said: "We were aware of his movements in advance and had informed the airport officials as well. Also present was our team. Our squad apprehended him as soon as he arrived at the airport and started the check-in procedure."
Wajid, 36, is the subject of nearly 20 cases, including one for rape.
Along with his brother and former MLC Mehmood Ali, who was detained in July from Mumbai, Iqbal's three sons are already in jail.
"Wajid confessed to hiding in Ajmer Sharif during the initial interrogation. He was unaware of his father's whereabouts "The SP claimed.
Haji Iqbal is being investigated for allegedly laundering money of Rs 10,000 crore while reportedly operating a mining syndicate in and around Saharanpur.
Additionally, he is being investigated by central investigative organisations such the Income Tax Division, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO).
He hasn't been detained yet.
The Saharanpur police have seized 337 crore rupees worth of Iqbal's property. The ED has attached Rs 1,097 crore worth of Iqbal's assets in 2021.

New Delhi (The Hawk): The Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) provisions have been used by the Directorate of Enforcement to open investigations in about 87 cases over the past five years involving MPs, MLAs, and MLCs (both former and sitting).
In a written response submitted to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that 59 Prosecution Complaints (PCs) have been brought before the Special Court (PMLA) during the past five years and are currently in various stages of litigation.
The PMLA's provisions went into effect on July 1, 2005, and as of now, the Special Court, PMLA has only finished trying 36 cases; the other 1,082 cases are still in various phases of the trial process.
The response went on to say that just 21 of the 36 decided cases in which the money laundering offence was tried on the merits had resulted in the conviction of 31 accused people.
Due to the predicate offence being quashed as a result of the charge sheet submitted by the predicate agency, the trial of the money laundering offence in the other 15 cases could not continue on the merits. However, in these circumstances, appealing to the top courts has been favoured.

Aligarh: Tariq Mansoor, vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), resigned on Tuesday after being nominated to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council the day before.
According to a notice issued by AMU Registrar Mohammad Imran, Pro Vice Chancellor Mohammad Gulrez will act as the Vice Chancellor until Mansoor's successor is named.
On Monday, Mansoor wrote an open letter to faculty and students at his university, in which he claimed, "This will be my last official farewell as Vice Chancellor. Throughout my six years of service, I saw the institution through both prosperous and difficult periods." "Consequent upon the resignation of Prof Tariq Mansoor, Vice Chancellor, AMU on April 2, 2023, Prof Mohammad Gulrez, Pro-Vice Chancellor shall discharge the duties of the Vice Chancellor until a new Vice-Chancellor assumes office," said an official release by the Registrar, Mohammad Imran.
Former Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, Dean of Students' Welfare and former Chairman of the Department of West Asian and North African Studies, and Director, of Centre of Continuing Adult Education and Extension, AMU, Prof Mohammad Gulrez is the Coordinator, of Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies Prog-ramme, and has vast administrative experience.
In addition to his 36 years of teaching and research work, Prof. Gulrez also acted as Director 'Centre for South African and Brazilian Studies (August 2015), which he established in November 2011 at AMU. Previously (from January 1999 to January 2004), he served as visiting Faculty, at the Department of Political and Administrative Sciences at the National University of Rwanda, Africa.
He has been a member of the Executive Council, AMU; Officer on Special Duty, AMU Murshidabad Centre; Founder Director, of the Directorate of School Education; and Provost of the Hall of Residence, AMU. Professor Gulrez was the Consultant /researcher, Good Governance (Component) for the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) Project, Government of Rwanda (2002). He has authored and edited seven books and contributed research papers in research journals, and books published in India and abroad. Some of his publications include Conflict Transformation in West Asia (2004), Settlements and Resistance in the Occupied Territories (Ed.2005), Constitutional Poll Battle: A Study of Iranian Presidential Election 2005 (2008), Area Studies in India (Ed.2009), Arab Spring &amp; Prospects of Peace in West Asia (2015), Prospects of Cooperation in Higher Education and Capacity Building: A Case Study of India and Sri Lanka (2017), etc.
In 2017, Prof. Gulrez was empanelled with ICCR on its prestigious Short Term Chair Professor to the High Commission of India / University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Previously, as a member and resource person, Prof. Gulrez represented India in Ghana, and Senegal for the Pre-India-Africa Forum Summit Conference sponsored by ICWA/MEA, Govt. of India (2013).
He is on the International Advisory Board of Asian Review Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.
Prof. Gulrez is currently working on confidence-building measures focusing on both the bi-lateral and multilateral tracks of the peace process. His area of specialisation is Conflict Resolution, Ethnic Conflicts, Civil Society, and Poverty Alleviation. Prof. Gulrez has travelled extensively delivering lectures and participating in conferences and seminars in various universities in the US, Iran, Pakistan, Libya, Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, the UK, Senegal, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka and Kuwait.
He holds M. Phil and PhD from Aligarh Muslim University.

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP MLA and former minister Eatala Rajender’s wife Eatala Jamuna on Tuesday made the sensational allegation that BRS MLC Kaushik Reddy is planning to assassinate her husband. She told media persons that she came to know that Kaushik Reddy planned to spend Rs 20 crore to kill her husband. “Kaushik Reddy’s arrogance comes from the support provided to him by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao,” said Jamuna, a businesswoman. She said that if any of her family members are harmed, the Chief Minister will be responsible. She said that since voters of Huzurabad taught a lesson to KCR, as Rao is commonly known, by electing Rajender, he was taking revenge from people of the constituency. Jamuna alleged that Kaushik Reddy was creating problems in Huzurabad with the support of KCR. She also said no action was taken against Kaushik Reddy for his remarks against Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. “In the upcoming polls, all the women in Huzurabad will unite and fight for better, safe governance. They will teach a lesson to KCR,” she said. Jamuna denied that her husband was planning to quit the BJP and said he would remain in the BJP. Rajender had quit the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and joined the BJP in 2021 after KCR had dropped him from the Cabinet following allegations that he encroached lands of some farmers for a poultry business run by his family. Rajender had also resigned from Assembly and contested the by-election on BJP’s ticket. He had retained the seat with a comfortable majority. Kaushik Reddy is a member of Telangana Legislative Council. He had resigned from the Congress to join the BRS. He was an aspirant for a BRS ticket in Huzurabad. However, the BRS had fielded G. Srinivas Yadav. Kaushik Reddy was later made a member of Legislative Council. Meanwhile, the BRS MLC denied the allegations leveled by Jamuna. He said he was ready for a debate with Rajender on the allegations. Kaushik Reddy alleged that it was Rajender who was involved in murder politics. He said in 2014, the former minister had got a man murdered. He also said that another person committed suicide due to the physical torture by the MLA. The MLC also claimed that Rajender tried to kill him in 2018. New Delhi: A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death by three teenage boys following a fight on Friday in the Bawana area of Delhi, according to official.
An Information of medico- legal case (MLC) of a deceased person was received from M.V. Hospital in Bawana at approximately 6:00 a.m., according to a senior police official.
"A police officer reached the hospital where it was revealed that a minor, a resident of JJ Cluster in Bawana was admitted by his relative. As per MLC, there is a history of physical assault (stab injury). Two injuries -- wound at the back and one in the stomach, were found," the police officer said.
The incident took place in the  Jhanda Chowk area of Bawana.
"The crime team inspected the spot and exhibits were collected," the officer stated.
Initial investigation revealed that another youngster who resides in the same area and two of his companions, both minors, were responsible for beating and stabbing the victim.
“A case under section 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered,” the official added.—Inputs from Agencies

Patna: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested JD-U MLC Radha Charan Sah in connection with a disproportionate assets case under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Sah was arrested following a day-long raid at his premises in Arrah on Wednesday. Sah is facing charges of owning disproportionate assets.
Separate teams of ED conducted raids on six premises belonging to Shah in Patna, Arrah and other places in Bihar on Wednesday.
Sah used to own a sweet shop outside the Arrah railway station a few years ago. Now, he has become a billionaire and has properties in several states. Sources said that he is also involved in sand mining and has earned crores of rupees in the last few years.
A week ago, the ED had served notices to Sah and his son Kanhaiya Sah, asking them to submit a written reply with the department. The father-son duo had submitted the reply, but the ED was not satisfied with it.

Soundararajan on Monday rejected the state government’s proposal to nominate BRS leaders Dasoju Sravan Kumar and K Satyanarayana to the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota. “My earnest request to the cabinet and the Hon’ble chief minister is to avoid such politically aligned persons from filling up nominated posts under Article 171(5) of the Constitution of India, defeating its objectives and enactment and consider only genuinely eminent persons in the respective field,” she said, in two separate letters addressed to chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, after rejecting the proposal. The governor said in the letter that the two MLC candidates recommended by the government were unfit for MLC posts under the Governor's quota. She said that the profiles of nominees do not indicate their special knowledge in Literature, science, art, Cooperative movement, and social services which are mandatory to get elected MLC under the Governor quota. Meanwhile, Union Minister and Telangana BJP President G Kishan Reddy backed the Governor’s decision. "It's the right of the Governor...Whatever she has done is good because it is wrong to nominate MLCs who will serve BRS and the KCR family from the Governor's quota. KCR gives tickets to those who serve his family. I want to thank the Governor for the decision," said Reddy on Monday.&nbsp;

New Delhi [India]: The Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday sent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha to judicial custody till April 9 in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case. Meanwhile, the Court has fixed April 1 for hearing on interim bail plea moved by K Kavitha.
ED on Tuesday moved an application before Rouse Avenue Court seeking court direction to send Kavitha to judicial custody. The probe agency, stated before Rouse Avenue Court that during her remand period, they recorded her statement, interrogated her, and confronted her with several individuals and digital records.

The agency said it is still further investigating the role of the arrestee in the instant matter and is unearthing the further proceeds of crime and identifying the other person who are involved or connected with the process or activities related to proceeds of crime. Investigation into economic crimes is more complex than the ordinary crimes as economic offenders are resourceful and influential persons having deep roots in the society and commit the said crimes in a carefully planned and meticulous manner, thereby rendering the investigation process a complicated exercise. Therefore, the accused may please be remanded to judicial custody. Kavitha was produced before the Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday at the end of her ED custody. Kavitha, a Telangana Member of Legislative Council (MLC) and the daughter of former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was arrested in Hyderabad on March 15 and remanded to ED custody a day later. She was arrested after a search operation was conducted at Kavitha's residence in Hyderabad on the same day. Earlier, the Supreme Court refused to entertain K Kavitha's bail plea in the Delhi excise policy case and asked her to move the trial court with the direction that the bail application filed would be decided expeditiously.
A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna, MM Sundresh, and Bela M. Trivedi remarked that it has to follow a uniform policy for all and can't allow people to approach the top court directly for bail as they are political people. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate claimed that BRS MLC K Kavitha allegedly conspired with the top leaders of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia to get favours in the Delhi Excise policy formulation and implementation, and she was involved in paying Rs 100 crore to the AAP leaders in exchange for these favours. The case arose out of a report submitted by Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena in July 2022, pointing to alleged procedural lapses in the formulation of the policy. The report said "arbitrary and unilateral decisions" taken by Sisodia in his capacity as Excise Minister had resulted in "financial losses to the exchequer" estimated at more than Rs 580 crore. This report was referred to the CBI, and led to Sisodia's arrest. The ED alleged that the "scam" was to give the wholesale liquor business to private entities and fix a 12 per cent margin, for a 6 per cent kickback. In its first prosecution complaint in November 2021, the ED said the policy was "formulated with deliberate loopholes" that "promoted cartel formations through the back door" to benefit AAP leaders. The ED also alleged that AAP leaders received kickbacks to the tune of Rs 100 crore from a group of individuals identified as the "South Group". Kavitha has been arrested allegedly for being part of this 'South Group'. Meanwhile, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was on Friday remanded to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate for seven days, i.e., till March 28, a day after he was arrested by the probe agency in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case.

New Delhi: The Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha till April 23, 2024, in relation to the excise policy money laundering case. The Special Judge, Kaveri Baweja, allowed the plea of the Enforcement Directorate, stating that she's made attempts to influence the witnesses, and tampered with evidence and hence her judicial custody should be extended by 14 days.
Advocate Nitesh Rana appeared for K Kavitha and opposed the ED plea, stating that there's nothing new since she was arrested, there are no new grounds. The application doesn't mention anything. Meanwhile, the Court had refused to permit K Kavitha to address personally/orally and said she could give her submissions in written form. Advocate Zoheb Hossain along with Naveen Kumar Matta and Simon Benjamin appeared for the Enforcement Directorate in the case while Advocates Nitesh Rana, Deepak Rana and Mohit Rao appeared for accused K Kavitha. Recently, the same court had allowed the CBI plea to quiz/examine K Kavitha during judicial custody in the Tihar Jail on any day of the coming week.  CBI, through the application, sought court permission to interrogate, quiz and record the statement of BRS Leader K Kavitha regarding WhatsApp chats recovered from Buchi Babu's phone and documents to a Land deal post which 100 crores were allegedly paid to Aam Aadmi Party in Kickbacks The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) arrested K. Kavitha MLC, Telangana Legislative Council, on March 15, 2024, in the case of the Delhi Liquor Policy Scam. A search was also conducted at the residence of K. Kavitha in Hyderabad on March 15, 2024. During the search proceedings, the ED officials were obstructed by the relatives and associates of K. Kavitha, said ED through a statement. ED investigation revealed that K Kavitha along with others conspired with the top leaders of AAP including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia to get favours in the Delhi Excise policy formulation and implementation. In exchange for these favours, she was involved in paying Rs 100 Crore to the leaders of AAP. Through acts of corruption and conspiracy in the formulation and implementation of Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, a continuous stream of illegal funds in the form of kickbacks from wholesalers was generated for the AAP. Further, K. Kavitha and her associates were to recover the proceeds of crime paid in advance to AAP and to generate profits or proceeds of crime from this entire conspiracy, stated ED.

To date, the ED has conducted searches on 245 locations across the country, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and other places. 15 people, including Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Vijay Nair from AAP, have been arrested in the case so far. ED has filed 1 Prosecution Complaint and 5 Supplementary Complaints in the case so far. Further, out of the proceeds of crime generated, assets worth Rs 128.79 crore have been traced so far and have been attached via provisional attachment orders dated January 24, 2023, and July 3, 2023. Both the attachment orders have been confirmed by the adjudicating authority in New Delhi. ED has filed its first chargesheet in the case. The agency said it has so far undertaken nearly 200 search operations in this case after filing an FIR taking cognizance of a CBI case that was registered on the recommendation of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor. The CBI inquiry was recommended on the findings of the Delhi Chief Secretary's report filed in July showing prima facie violations of the GNCTD Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules (ToBR)-1993, Delhi Excise Act-2009, and Delhi Excise Rules- 2010, officials had said. The ED and the CBI had alleged that irregularities were committed while modifying the Excise Policy, undue favours were extended to licence holders, the licence fee was waived or reduced and the L-1 licence was extended without the competent authority's approval. The beneficiaries diverted "illegal" gains to the accused officials and made false entries in their books of account to evade detection, the probe agencies said. As per the allegations, the excise department had decided to refund the earnest money deposit of about Rs 30 crore to a successful tenderer against the set rules. Even though there was no enabling provision, a waiver on tendered licence fees was allowed from December 28, 2021, to January 27, 2022, due to COVID-19, the probe agency said and there was an alleged loss of Rs 144.36 crore to the exchequer.
