Ministry of Ayush has chosen this theme for 8th International Day of Yoga 2022 to be organised in India and across the globe on 21st June 2022. The main event of IDY 2022 demonstration will be held at Mysuru, Karnataka. The theme of last year’s IDY, organised during COVID-19 pandemic was “Yoga for wellness".Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the theme in his “Maan Ki Baat’ address. The theme for this year’s IDY has been selected after much deliberation/consultation and it appropriately portrays, how during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic, yoga served the humanity in alleviating the sufferings and in the emerging post-covid geo-political scenario too, it will bring people together through compassion, kindness, foster a sense of unity and build resilience among people world over.Union Minister for Ayush, Ports, Shipping &amp; Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said that our Prime Minister has suitably announced this year’s IDY theme as “Yoga for Humanity”. As we are aware Yoga is a practice that brings joy, health, and peace from within, and it deepens a sense of continuous connection between an individual’s inner consciousness and the external world. IDY 2022 will be successful in propagating this theme appropriately.&nbsp;Focusing on Yoga for Humanity, special programmes have been designed this year for specially abled people, Transgender population, women and children. Human values that are an integral part of Yoga education in schools are also in focus. This year our villages/Gram Panchayats will also see huge participation as, the Common Service Centres (CSCs) are promoting practice and training of Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) and it is expected millions of villagers will participate in the IDY 2022.The 8th edition of International Day of Yoga will see many firsts, one of them is an innovative programme named “Guardian Ring”, which will showcase the movement of the sun, participation of people performing Yoga will take place along with the movement of the sun from different countries, beginning from east and marching towards west. It will be a wonderful Relay Yoga Streaming programme telecasted live on DD channels. As the nation is also celebrating “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, 75 national level iconic sites will also be showcasing the mass CYP demonstration on June 21st while respective states will also organise similar programmes at 75 important locations as per their selection.The 8th edition of International Day of Yoga (IDY2022) is being promoted through multiple programmes by the Ministry of Ayush, in association with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. A curtain raiser event to mark the 100 days countdown was celebrated on 13th March 2022, which started the campaign: 100 days, 100 cities and 100 organisations from 13th March to 21st June, 2022, across the globe. A 75th day countdown event was organized at the Red Fort in New Delhi. The 50th Days countdown was celebrated at Sivasagar, Assam and 25th days countdown was celebrated in Hyderabad, Telangana.

Dehradun: As Uttarakhand picks up the pieces after recent cloudbursts that claimed a dozen lives and damaged infrastructure, noted environmentalist Anil Prakash Joshi has warned of a much worse scenario in the coming years if necessary safeguards are not put in place to conserve the fragile Himalayan ecology.
"A reckless exploitation of natural resources in a blind pursuit of development will further aggravate the situation and may lead to far worse human tragedies. So it is better to wake up before it is too late and take enough preventive measures," Joshi told PTI in an interview on Sunday.
It is high time an international debate began on growing ecological insecurity of the world and the perils of rising air pollution and depleting water resources, he said.
"Around 200 years ago the challenge was economic insecurity as there were no roads, no infrastructure, no jobs. But now the challenge has changed to the growing ecological insecurity of the world which comes with economic growth," Joshi, who was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2020 for his contribution in the field of environment conservation, said.
The responsibility of a Himalayan state like Uttarakhand is bigger in tackling this challenge as the rivers originating from the state fulfil the irrigational requirements of the rest of the country, he said. Joshi coined the term Gross Environmental Product (GEP), an ecological growth measure parallel to the GDP. His coinage gained currency with Uttarakhand officially accepting it as a growth measure in June, 2021. On mega infrastructure projects underway in Uttarakhand such as the Rs 12,000-crore all-weather road project and the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line, Joshi said development is an irreversible process but it must go hand in hand with conservation of the ecosystem.
"We can't put the clock back even if we want to but striking a balance between development and ecology is a must," he said.
He expressed his personal preference for rail link projects over road projects which according to him are more damaging to the Himalayan ecology. Joshi cited the example of Switzerland which is often compared to Uttarakhand because of its scenic beauty, saying it preferred a widespread network of rail routes rather than roads. “It has helped preserve the country's picturesque locations," he said.
Rail networks are far more sustainable and environment friendly than a network of roads which need periodic repairs and are highly damaging to the environment, he said.
Compensatory afforestation as a concept is good but it does not work in the absence of enough water resources, he said.
He suggested digging enough water holes alongside largescale plantation drives to make up for felling of trees during the making of roads and building infrastructure to make compensatory afforestation more effective. Citing the 2013 Kedarnath tragedy in which thousands perished and the glacial disaster that struck Chamoli in February 2021 killing over 200 people, the founder of the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO) said enough has happened to awaken the authorities to the dangers of a mad race for development showing utter disregard to the environment and ecology.
"A preventive mechanism has to be developed. Rainwater conservation, water recharging mechanisms have to be put in place. Relocating populations living along riverbanks, especially those within 100 metres from rivers, also deserves serious consideration to ensure their safety." Citing the cloudbursts that hit Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri districts earlier this month killing at least a dozen people, washing away bridges and damaging houses, Joshi said people living close to rivers were the worst hit. So the option of shifting such settlements farther away from riverbanks and making them safe must be tried out, he said.
Twelve bodies have so far been recovered from the cloudburst-hit areas of the three districts and a massive relief and rescue operation is underway in search of around seven people who are still missing. —PTI&nbsp;

Udaipur (The Hawk): IIM Udaipur's Incubation Center hosts for the first time the global tech community "Finding Humans in Tech" at the IIMU campus to celebrate the launch of their first book series and social entrepreneurship award in 2023. The tech community connects 500+ innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and change-makers within one single platform to use tech for humanity and to shine a light on the exceptional journeys of people across the globe.
The incubation team and Prof. Ashok Banerjee, Director of IIM Udaipur, initiated the momentous event by inspiring the audience to take a step towards entrepreneurship. The event was attended by prominent leaders like Mr. Rajeev Gupta, the CEO/Founder of Resource Development International, IIT-BHU &amp; IMT-Ghaziabad alumni, Mrs. Richa Sharma, co-founder of CurryiT, IIMU-2014 alumni, ex-Director of Bertelsmann and ex-VP of Yes Bank and Dr. L. Fimate, Director (rtd.) RIMS-Imphal and ZMC-Aizawl, FIAFM, WHO Fellow.
Some of the international members of the tech community were present for the occasion, namely Adonis Simo, a tech product manager at Workbud and a member of OSS Cameroon, and Anna Olizarivska, Clubhouse Icon, a Ukrainian anti-war activist and a human intelligence and customer care expert at Blend Localization.
The Finding Humans in Tech's Social Entrepreneurship Award 2023 was given to the spirited entrepreneur, Nelly Cheboi, CEO/Co-Founder of TechLit Africa, from Kenya. She has been listed in Forbes' "30 under 30" and recently won the CNN Hero of the Year Award for 2022. Her venture will be featured on the cover of the book series, and a donation will be made to "Techlit Africa" from the proceeds of the sale of the book. The event was also graced by Hanna Adeyema, co-founder of Tenacity Health and the current director of MIT Bootcamps, which is a part of the MIT Sloan School of Management. She gave an insight into her experience as a part of the community.
The creator of the tech community, Lana Louphul, who is a tech entrepreneur and currently pursuing her MBA at IIM Udaipur, advocated for the need to use tech for good and humanity. Her venture was selected for the MIT Bootcamp for Innovation Leadership, and she will be attending the MIT Venture Acceleration Program this fall in Boston, Massachusetts. The "Finding Humans in Tech" book series will be available for sale on Amazon from March 2023 onwards.

Beijing: The Communist Party of China (CPC) has expanded its repression of the Uyghur in recent years, which includes limiting their freedom of expression, speech, religion, and freedom to move around, Voices Against Autocracy reported. Several media reports have underlined the persecution of Uyghurs as the most horrifying crime against humanity in China. Since 2017, the Chinese government has incarcerated over a million Uyghurs in "re-education camps" and subjected those who have not been detained to rigorous monitoring, religious restrictions, forced labour, and forcible sterilisation, according to Voices Against Autocracy. It has been regarded as "the largest incarceration of a minority group since the Holocaust" by Western researchers. A UN Human Rights Office assessment released last year indicated "patterns of torture or other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment" in the camps. The vast majority of those incarcerated in the camps were never charged and had no legal recourse to protest their confinement. According to a recent Al Jazeera report (released on 4 May 2023) citing a Human Rights Watch (HRW) forensic investigation, Chinese authorities have monitored the phones of the ethnic minority Uyghur for the presence of 50,000 known multimedia files that were used to flag what China views as extremism, with the mere possession of the Quran triggering a police interrogation. Notably, China also continues to utilise its considerable influence to influence UN processes and ensure that its partners avoid publicly acknowledging Uyghur oppression.  Following the release of the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) voted down a motion by the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to convene a debate on human rights abuses in Xinjiang in October 2022, just the second time in sixteen years reported Voices Against Autocracy. On the Chinese atrocities on Uyghur minorities, Michael Levitt, writing in the Toronto Star said that world attention on the plight of the Uyghur has somewhat decreased. He concludes his case by noting that the oppression of Uyghurs in China is one of the most heinous crimes against humanity. According to the US State Department's annual report on religious freedom around the world violations of human rights in China and Iran have become a major cause of concern in recent times. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that most oppressive nations around the world are growing even more dire. "Governments in many parts of the world continue to target religious minorities using a host of methods, including torture, beatings, unlawful surveillance, and so-called re-education camps," he said. Blinken underscored abuses against the predominately Muslim Uyghur minority group in the Xinjiang province of China, a country one senior State Department official described as "one of the worst abusers of human rights and religious freedom in the world." The report accused Beijing of jailing as many as 10,000 or more people in 2022 in a widening campaign of repression against religious belief meant to bring all theological activity under the Chinese Communist Party's control. The estimate of those imprisoned in the country ranging "from the low thousands to over 10,000" is one of many contained in the State Department's International Religious Freedom Report. The US has previously determined that Beijing's treatment of the Uyghurs amounts to genocide and crimes against humanity, and the report, which covers the year 2022, said that persecution has continued steadily. Shimla: The governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla on Wednesday said that the courage of the 41workers who were stranded in Silkayara tunnel in Uttrakhand is commendable. He also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for the success of the rescue operation. "I would like to appreciate their courage who were inside the collapsed tunnel for 17 days and came out happy. I would like to greet those who helped in taking them out. I would also like to appreciate the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand who were continuously monitoring the situation,"Said Shiv Pratap Shukla. All 41 workers who were trapped inside Uttarakhand's Silkyari tunnel since November 12 were evacuated safely on Tuesday evening. On November 12, a section of the tunnel between 205 and 260 metres from the Silkyara side collapsed. Workers who were beyond the 260-metre mark were trapped, with their exit blocked. The rescued workers were draped in orange marigold flower garlands and were greeted by CM Dhami and Union Minister VK Singh. Following the safe evacuation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the courage and patience of the trapped workers and their families, as well as the bravery and determination of the rescue personnel. PM Modi in his post on X said, "The success of the rescue operation of our labourer brothers in Uttarkashi is making everyone emotional. I want to say to the friends who were trapped in the tunnel that your courage and patience is inspiring everyone. I wish you all well and good health." "It is a matter of great satisfaction that after a long wait, these friends of ours will now meet their loved ones. The billionaire's startup launched the AI model to a small group of users that month.  In December, xAI rolled out its ChatGPT competitor Grok for Premium+ subscribers of social media platform X, aiming to create what Musk has said would be a "maximum truth-seeking AI".
