Hyderabad News: AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday slammed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman over her statement that Muslims in India are doing better than those in Pakistan.

The Hyderabad MP took to Twitter for a point by point rebuttal to Sitharaman's comments made in the US at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), during a discussion on the resilience and growth of the Indian economy.

"For Finance Minister of Vishwaguru, the benchmark is Pakistan! Muslims in India have flourished DESPITE the Sangh Parivar's anti constitutional ideology, not BECAUSE of it," wrote Owaisi.

"For how long are Muslims going to be connected to Pakistan? We are not hostages or mascots against Pakistan. We're citizens. We want to be treated with dignity &amp; justice.

"If a section of Hindus demand better living standards, will you tell them to shut up because majority of people in Somalia are doing worse?" asked Owaisi.

He pointed out that the ruling party does not have a single Muslim MP in Lok Sabha. "This is damning. But BJP carries it as a badge of honour."

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader also found fault with Sitharaman for citing the increase in population of Muslims to deny that there was any discrimination.

"Populations grow or degrow based on demographic factors, not on the benevolence or malevolence of a Govt. However assume that Govt has a role, then census after census show a decline in growth of Muslim population in India. Would that mean that government is malevolent?" he asked.

"Population growth or decline is not the only measure of treatment of minorities. In today's India Genocidal Dharam Sansads are ignored by govt; ruling party MPs call for economic boycotts &amp; ask people to keep 'weapons' Just one state of Maharashtra alone had 50 anti-Muslim hate rallies. The state looks away when Muslims face lynchings &amp; violence. Instead, Muslims have to face bulldozers &amp; false imprisonment from the govt," wrote Owaisi.

"Every piece of govt data points at abysmal state of Muslim education. Muslims lag behind in education due to high poverty. It's a cruel joke that FM mentioned fellowships when govt stopped Maulana Azad Fellowship &amp; restricted Pre &amp; Post-Matric Scholarships for poor minorities."

"Minority affairs budget has been slashed by 40%! In Karnataka, your party govt has run a campaign opposing hijab, removed poor Muslims' reservations in education &amp; employment. Muslims' businesses have been targeted by govt policies AND by mob rule."

The FM says "law and order is a state issue" but the states where Muslims have faced the worst violence &amp; discrimination are BJP-ruled. In non-BJP states, the main culprits of violence are all affiliates of Sangh Parivar", he wrote.

Owaisi pointed out that tn Assam, Muslims are facing mass displacement in the name encroachments and, even in the capital city, genocidal slogans against Muslims have been raised. "From Bihar to Gujarat, Muslims have faced horrible arson and violence.A This is not petty "law and order" issue. You got angry &amp; demanded Modi's picture on some ration shop in Telangana. Nicosia (Cyprus): Recep Tayyip Erdogan, having succeeded in getting re-elected for a third time as Turkey's President, in the face of the big economic crisis plaguing his country, has given some indications that he may replace his unorthodox economic policies, dubbed by prestigious foreign media as "Erdoganomics", with orthodox economics. But first, let's see what "Erdoganomics" are. According to an explanation of the term given by the Washington Post, it includes erratic management of the economy, coupled with double-digit inflation, fuzzy statistics and departure from a rules-based order. The underlying doctrine is that interest rates are the mother of all evil and cause inflation, though conventional economics says otherwise." As a result of the application of "Erdoganomics", Turkey which in 2014 was the world's 16th largest economy has slipped three places in the relevant ranking and now, according to the World Bank, occupies number 19, with a GDP of US$906 billion, compared to almost US$1 trillion in 2013. Last February's devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey caused the loss of life of about 56,000 people and more than USD 34 billion in direct loses, while reconstruction of damaged buildings will require more than USD 70 billion. The earthquakes have added pressure to an increasingly fragile macro-financial situation. According to financial experts, in the last months before May's elections, the Central Bank of Turkey has depleted all its foreign currency reserves as it tried to prop up the Turkish Lira and in May net reserves reached a record low of negative USD5.7 billion. Erdogan's unorthodox economic policies of keeping interest rates low in order to boost exports, growth and employment have created a serious currency and cost-of-living crisis, while the average Turkish family is struggling to afford daily essentials. Also, since the start of the year, the Turkish Lira has lost around 21 per cent of its value against the dollar. After his re-election, Erdogan appointed two internationally respected officials, former Merrill Lynch economist Mehmet Simsek, as Finance Minister, and Hafize Gaye Erkan, formerly of Goldman Sachs and First Republic Bank, as Governor of the Central Bank. Immediately after his appointment as Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek declared that "Turkey had no other option but to return to a rational ground. Price stability will be our main target. Reducing inflation to single digits in the medium term is of vital importance for our country." In a recent Twitter post, Simsek said that he favours a free-floating foreign exchange regime. Last Thursday, Turkey's Central Bank, for the first time in 16 months, raised interest rates from 8.5 per cent to 15 per cent. However, as the markets are convinced that a much bigger increase is necessary to improve the country's financial situation and that the increase announced was significantly less than expected, the Lira fell by 4 per cent resulting in a historical high of 24.5 against the US dollar. The Central Bank stated that further increases in interest rates would follow "in a timely and gradual manner until a significant improvement in the inflation outlook is achieved." On Friday, Central Bank Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan, during a meeting with the Turkish Banks Association, said she was confident that all economic units in Turkey would be working hard to combat inflation in line with the government's economic targets and added: "I am sure that we will tackle this in a stable, determined, and goal-oriented manner." Simsek and Erkan are expected to do their best to implement rational economic policies, but they have to tread very carefully, as Erdogan may change his mind on the subject of economics, as he did in the past. Many economists doubt Erdogan's commitment to abandon his firm view about keeping interest rates low. They recall that he unceremoniously fired three previous Central Bank Governors who refused to lower interest rates according to his wishes. In the end, he found a compliant Governor, who in 2021 reduced the Central Bank policy rate from 19 per cent to 8.5 per cent. The fact that Erdogan has recently repeated that he has not changed his views on the economy may mean that he intends to use the new Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank to absorb the political cost of unpopular reforms and then replace them with people who are willing to implement his unorthodox views on the economy. That Erdogan has not changed his way of thinking is evidenced by a statement made last week, when he said: "Some friends should not make the mistake of thinking whether the President is going through a big change in interest rate policies. I am the same here. We have worked with a low-interest rate, low-inflation theory. I still work with the same understanding." As it happened many times in the past, when the dividing lines of politics and economics become fuzzy, the government is usually unable to take independent and pragmatic decisions that could really serve the country's economy and convince the world markets. As Gabriel Gavin and Geoffrey Smith point out in a recent article in Politico: "Erdogan is hedging his bets politically on the anti-inflation strategy. On the one hand, he has brought in a new team of main-steam financial experts to prescribe the bitter medicine needed to control runaway prices, but he is also simultaneously distancing himself from rate hikes by insisting that he still believes slashing rates will tame spiraling costs for basic goods and staple foods." So, it remains unclear whether we have seen the end of "Erdoganomics" and the return to economic rationality in Turkey or not. —ANI

New Delhi: India's merchandise trade deficit declined by around 3 per cent to $24.16 billion in August from $24.86 billion in the same month last year, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Friday.A lower trade deficit is good news as it leads to a strengthening of the rupee and bolsters the macroeconomic fundamentals of the economy.
The official trade figures compiled by the Commerce Ministry show that merchandise exports stood at $34.48 billion in August up from $32.25 billion in July. However, imports during August were also higher at $58.64 billion compared to $52.92 billion in the previous month.
However, exports fell when compared year-on-year as they had touched the $37.02 billion mark in August last year. Barthwal said that lower prices of petroleum goods were responsible for the dip in overall exports.
The slowdown in global markets has also been a factor as exports to the US, India's largest trade partner, have fallen to $31.55 billion in August from $35.15 billion in the same month last year.

London [UK]: Indian student Satyam Surana, the boy who tried to protect the Indian flag during the Khalistani protest in front of the Indian High Commission in London on Monday, said he had never seen the Indian flag being demeaned this way, his conscious persuaded him to protect the tricolour. Satyam, a student at the London School of Economics, said: "I saw the Indian flag was being demeaned, went behind the police lady who had stepped on the flag intentionally. I picked up the flag and I just moved away then."
"I had never seen the Indian flag being demeaned this way. My inner self, my mind, my conscience were shocked to see how this could happen. That's what motivated, persuaded me to go forward and do what I did," he said. Khalistani protestors were on Monday cordoned off on either side of the street from the Indian High Commission in London. However, a group of protestors breached the barricades and crossed over to the side of the HCI with an Indian flag and a bottle of what they called 'cow urine'. Khalistan supporters claimed that they were staging the protest over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India, was killed outside a gurdwara in Canada's Surrey on June 18. One of the protestors gave an anti-India and anti-Sunak speech standing in front of the HCI London and then threw the Indian flag on the ground. Satyam was standing near the scene. He leapt forward as soon as the Khalistanis moved and picked up the Indian flag from the street. Some of the Khalistanis got agitated by this act and started cursing him. Metropolitan police officers present at the scene in their bid to neutralise the situation and protect Satyam, safely nudged him out of the place. Satyam's video where he is seen picking up the Indian flag from the ground went viral when former Advisor to UK Government Colin Bloom posted a video of the whole incident on his X handle. Satyam said: "So, there was a protest going on outside the Indian High Commission and when I went to see what was going on, I realized it was a protest by the pro-Khalistan group and these people were giving their slogans and the protest was going on." "I saw some people were going around with the national flag in their leg and there was a heavy amount of demeaning and insult that was intended towards the Indian national flag so that's why I stayed back and was looking at the entire protest," he added. He said that after some time, some people walked towards the Indian High Commission with the flag in their hand and the group started putting the flag on the ground and desecrating it. He then followed his instinct and saved the flag. Satyam further said that though his parents are worried about his safety, they are happy about what he did. "All of my friends are very proud, super proud. I am telling them that I have just exercised my duty as an Indian citizen and I just did what my conscience has told me. I would never pull a leg back when I get to serve my nation or to protect its dignity," he said. The protest by the Khalistan supporters came days after the planned interaction of Indian High Commissioner to Britain Vikram Doraiswami by the Gurudwara Committee in Glasgow was deliberately disrupted by three persons- all from areas outside Scotland. The Indian High Commission in London issued a statement on Saturday and said the interaction was to discuss community and consular issues. "On September 29, 2023, three persons- all from areas outside Scotland-deliberately disrupted a planned interaction organised by the Gurudwara Committee for the community, the High Commissioner and the Consul General of India. The organizers included senior community leaders, ladies and Committee members, and a member of the Scottish Parliament," the statement said. "They were threatened and abused by these elements. In an effort to prevent any potential altercation, the HC and CG decided to leave the premises shortly upon their arrival," it added. The Indian High Commission said it reported the incident to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Metropolitan Police. It said multiple community organisations, including the organisers, have formally regretted the incident and have urged the authorities to take action against the culprits.

New Delhi: After the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs increased the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the government is committed to fulfilling every resolution related to the welfare of our farmer across the country. "Our government is committed to fulfilling every resolution related to the welfare of our farmer brothers and sisters across the country. In this context, a historic increase in the price of sugarcane has been approved. This step will benefit crores of our sugarcane-producing farmers.," PM Modi posted on X. Earlier on Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for Sugar Season 2024-25 at Rs 340 per quintal at a sugar recovery rate of 10.25 per cent. This was the historic price of sugarcane, which is about 8 per cent higher than the FRP of sugarcane for the current season (2023-24). The revised FRP will be applicable from October 1, 2024. "At 107 per cent higher than the A2+FL cost of sugarcane, the new FRP will ensure the prosperity of sugarcane farmers. It is noteworthy that India is already paying the highest price of sugarcane in the world and despite that, the government is ensuring the world's cheapest sugar for domestic consumers in Bharat," a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs release said. "This decision of the Central Government is going to benefit more than 5 crore sugarcane farmers (including family members) and lakhs of other persons involved in the sugar sector. It re-confirms the fulfilment of the Modi ki Guarantee to double farmers' income," the release said. With this approval, sugar mills will pay FRP of sugarcane at Rs 340 per quintal at recovery of 10.25 per cent. With each increase of recovery by 0.1 per cent, farmers will get the additional price of Rs 3.32 while the same amount will be deducted on the reduction of recovery by 0.1 per cent. However, Rs 315.10 per quintal is the minimum price of sugarcane which is at recovery of 9.5 per cent. Even if sugar recovery is lesser, farmers are assured of FRP at Rs 315.10 per quintal. According to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, In the last 10 years, the Government has ensured that farmers get the right price of their crops at the right time. 99.5 per cent of the cane dues of the previous sugar season 2022-23 and 99.9 per cent of all other sugar seasons are already paid to farmers leading to the lowest cane arrears pending in the history of the sugar sector. With timely policy interventions by the government, sugar mills have become self-sustainable and no financial assistance has been given to them by the government since 2021-22. Still, the Central Government has ensured 'Assured FRP and Assured Procurement' of sugarcane to farmers, the CCEA said. The FRP has been determined based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) and after consultation with state governments and other stakeholders. —ANI

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a historic increase in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the 2024-25 season.
