Betul: A man and a one-year-old girl were killed, while the infant's parents were injured when two motorcycles collided head-on in Madhya Pradesh's Betul district, police said on Monday.The accident took place late Sunday night near Chorpandhra village on Betul-Parasia state highway, they said.The two motorcycles coming from opposite sides collided on the road. A one-year-old girl and a man aged 25, riding different vehicles, died on the spot, Ranipur police station in-charge Nanheveer Singh said. The deceased girl's parents suffered injuries and were undergoing treatment at district hospital, he added.—PTI

Not only is natural gas a non-renewable source of energy, but it also creates carbon dioxide gas when burned, damaging our environment, and contributing to global warming.Enter a new TAU discovery, which may boost the industrial transition from using polluting gray hydrogen to environmentally friendly green hydrogen: Researchers identified a mutant of a known strain of microscopic algae that allows, for the first time, the production of green hydrogen gas via photosynthesis on a scale suited to industrial requirements. Hydrogen gas can thus be produced solely through renewable energy and in a climate-neutral manner, reducing our carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions dramatically to stabilize global temperatures.Humanity's transition to the use of green hydrogen may be the ultimate solution to the problem of global warming.Continuous Production AchievedThe study was led by doctoral student Tamar Elman, under the supervision of Prof. Iftach Yacoby from the Renewable Energy Laboratory of The George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences at Tel Aviv University. The study was recently published in the prestigious journal Cell Reports Physical Science.While production of green hydrogen is possible through solar panels wired to devices that perform water breakdown into hydrogen and oxygen (electrolysers), the researchers explain that this is an expensive process, requiring precious metals and distilled water. In nature, hydrogen is produced as a by-product of photosynthesis for periods of minutes by micro-algae, unicellular algae found in every water reservoir and even in the soil. For this biological process to become a sustainable source of energy, however, humanity must engineer micro-algae strains that produce hydrogen for days and weeks.Prof. Yacoby explains that as part of the laboratory tests, the researchers identified a new mutant in microscopic algae that prevents oxygen from accumulating at any lighting intensity, and therefore hypothesized that continuous hydrogen production could be achieved from it. With the help of bioreactor measurements in liter volumes, they were indeed able to prove that hydrogen can be produced continuously for more than 12 days.According to Prof. Yacoby, the new mutant overcomes two major barriers that have so far hindered the continuous production of hydrogen:Accumulation of oxygen in the process of photosynthesis - As a rule, oxygen poisons the enzyme that produces hydrogen in algae, but in the mutation, increased respiration eliminates the oxygen and allows favorable conditions for continuous hydrogen production.Loss of energy to competing processes – And this includes carbon dioxide fixation into sugar. This, too, has been solved in the mutant and most of the energy is being channeled for continuous hydrogen production.To industrialize these results, the research team led by Prof. Yacoby is working on a pilot program for larger volumes and the development of methods that will allow the time of hydrogen harvest to be extended, to reduce its cost to competitive levels. "The rate of hydrogen production from the new mutant reaches one-tenth of the possible theoretical rate, and with the help of additional research it is possible to improve it even further," concludes Prof. Yacoby.

Muzaffarnagar: Four persons died while two others sustained grave injuries after a speeding truck rammed into their motorcycles on the Panipat-Khatima highway near Jagahedi village near here on Wednesday, police said.According to Station House Officer (SHO) Mukesh Kumar Solanki, the deceased were identified as Vipin Kumar (30), his wife Meenu (28), Sachin (22) and Nitin Kumar (23) of Titawi village.Six persons, travelling on three bikes, were on their way to Muzaffarnagar from Titawi village when the accident took place, police said.Those injured were shifted to a district hospital in serious condition, they added.Police has seized the truck abandoned by the driver who fled from the spot after the accident.—PTI

Varanasi: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday visited Kashi Vishwanath Temple and offered prayers.
While talking to ANI, Mandaviya said, "Due to the better facilities at the Kashi Vishwanath temple, people are coming in large numbers for worshipping. Due to the increased facilities, the visit has become much easier. People come to Kashi Vishwanath with great devotion. I have also offered prayer at Kashi Vishwanath temple with my family".
Mandaviya on Sunday morning took a bicycle ride in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi and appealed to the people to use cycles as a medium of commutation if the workplace is nearby the residence. The cycle ride was organised by BJP Yuva Morcha, on the second day of Universal Health Coverage Day celebrations here.
Ahead of the beginning of the event on the second day, the Minister visited Baba Vishwanath temple and then cycled for 5 km to give a message about staying healthy and also protecting the environment. Along with the Union Minister, hundreds of BJP workers were also seen cycling on the streets of Varanasi. Speaking to the media on the occasion, Mandaviya said, "A cycle ride was organised by BJP Yuva Morcha here. We want to give the message that cycling helps us reduce pollution &amp; traffic, and it also promotes health." "Cycling is not only the best exercise, but also it is a solution to pollution, and traffic. I want to give a message to the people that if your workplace is nearby or you have to travel nearby your residence, please do use a bicycle," he added.

Washington: Any women's publication you read will probably have tips on how to increase exercise. But many people are unaware that the majority of fitness advice is based on research that almost exclusively involves men. Over 90 per cent of studies on exercise performance and fatigability do not include female volunteers because it is assumed that menstrual cycle hormonal changes affect exercise capacity, which, if accurate, would muddy the data and make including women in the study too difficult.
A new study from Brigham Young University researchers, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, shows why that assumption is misguided. Analyzing women's exercise performance across their menstrual cycles, researchers found no variability in endurance thresholds or performance: from workout to workout, women's performance was just as consistent as men's.
"Females with regular cycles performed the same between the high-estrogen phase, the high-progesterone phase and during menstruation, when there are low concentrations of both," said Jessica Linde, who led the study for her BYU Master's thesis in exercise science. "That information lifts a big barrier. It shows we shouldn't be excluding women from research based on the idea that their menstrual cycles are going to skew the results."
In fact, the study demonstrated why it's crucial to include women in research. While women's menstrual cycles didn't affect their exercise, there were key differences between how women's and men's endurance played out. For example, women reached exhaustion from muscle fatigue about 18 per cent faster than men, even when adjusting for muscle mass, possibly because women's bodies may naturally reserve more energy.
"The assumption in exercise research has long been that women are like men, just smaller," said BYU exercise science professor and co-author Jayson Gifford. "Our study suggests that they're not, that there are important differences between women's and men's exercise. Including more women in research will allow us to fine tune approaches to women's physiology."
For the study, seven women and 10 men completed intense cycling sessions, the women at three points during the menstrual cycle confirmed through blood draws and ovulation tests, and the men at 10-day intervals. As participants exercised, researchers measured heart and respiratory rates to assess performance.
"Previous studies have looked at maybe one intensity of exercise in the menstrual cycle, but Jessica was extremely comprehensive and looked at five. It was one of the most thorough studies I've seen to date, and the data were extremely convincing," Gifford said.
Although female participants often told the researchers that their menstrual cycles affected how they were feeling and how well they expected to perform, their measurable results showed "absolutely no change," the researchers said. While hormones like estrogen are known to influence how well arteries dilate and how blood flows to muscles, those underlying processes "didn't amount to impaired overall performance."
Linde and Gifford were careful to note that the study focused only on cycling and included only women without menstrual disorders. More research is needed to determine how irregular menstruation might affect exercise. Learning more about women's exercise is especially important now that there are more female athletes than ever -- Linde, who is now continuing her research as a Ph.D. student at Marquette University, was herself inspired to pursue the research because of her experiences as a Division I athlete in college.
"I had never considered my female physiology impacting my performance until I got injured, and it was brought up," Linde said. "I think sometimes we just don't think of these questions. But in the last Olympics, the number of female and male athletes was finally equal. We have so many female athletes and women in general who are exercising and want answers about how they perform, so we need to study them." —ANI
