Srinagar: Come September and film aficionados in Kashmir will be able to watch the latest movies on the big screen as the Valley's first multiplex is set to open in the Sonawar area here. The multiplex, being developed in collaboration with leading theatre chain INOX, will have three movie halls with a total capacity of 520 seats, its owner Vijay Dhar told PTI. The operations and management of the property will be looked after by INOX. Dhar, who also runs the Delhi Public School at Athwajan in the outskirts of the city here, said the multiplex will start operations from early next month. "It will be thrown open in early September. Two of the three theatres will be made operational first, the other one will be opened in October," he said. Ninety per cent of the work is complete and some finishing touches remain before the multiplex is opened for the public, Dhar added. The property of cutting-edge facilities, including the latest sound system, he said. It will house several food courts, where Dhar plans to promote local cuisine. A gaming zone will also be added in the multiplex at a later stage, the entrepreneur further said. "The idea is to restore cinema in the Valley which will provide younger generations with some entertainment. It will keep them away from bad things," he added. The multiplex building has come up at the site where Broadway -- once considered among the best single screen theatres of north India -- used to be located. It is in the high-security zone next to the headquarters of the Indian Army's 15 Corps. There were nearly a dozen standalone cinema halls functioning in the Valley till the late 1980s, but they had to wind up businesses after two militant outfits threatened the owners. The authorities over the years have made attempts to reopen some of the theatres in the late 1990s, but the efforts came a cropper as militants carried out a deadly grenade attack on Regal Cinema in the heart of Lal Chowk here in September 1999. Two other cinemas -- Neelam and Broadway -- had opened their doors to patrons but downed their shutters again due to poor response. The government last year launched its new film policy to facilitate the overall growth of the film industry in the region, including setting up of a film development council and revival of closed cinema halls. The policy, launched at a star-studded event in the presence of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, aims to establish Jammu and Kashmir as the first choice of film shooting destination for filmmakers. The Jammu &amp; Kashmir Film Development Council (JKFDC) has taken several initiatives to promote the Union territory as a leading destination for shooting and production of all feature and non-feature content films, digital content and television shows. The new film policy has generated fresh hope among local artistes who hope that it would generate employment opportunities for them and rejuvenate old connections with Bollywood when filmmakers would make a beeline to the beautiful locales of the Valley.&nbsp;

Washington: Researchers have created model embryos from mouse stem cells that form a brain, a beating heart, and the foundations of all the other organs of the body a new avenue for recreating the first stages of life.
The team, led by Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, developed the embryo model without eggs or sperm, and instead used stem cells the body's master cells, which can develop into almost any cell type in the body.
The researchers mimicked natural processes in the lab by guiding the three types of stem cells found in early mammalian development to the point where they start interacting. By inducing the expression of a particular set of genes and establishing a unique environment for their interactions, the researchers were able to get the stem cells to 'talk' to each other.
The stem cells self-organised into structures that progressed through the successive developmental stages until they had beating hearts and the foundations of the brain, as well as the yolk sac where the embryo develops and gets nutrients in its first weeks. Unlike other synthetic embryos, the Cambridge-developed models reached the point where the entire brain, including the anterior portion, began to develop. This is a further point in development than has been achieved in any other stem cell-derived model.
The team say their results, the result of more than a decade of research that progressively led to more and more complex embryo-like structures and reported in the journal Nature, could help researchers understand why some embryos fail while others go on to develop into a healthy pregnancy. Additionally, the results could be used to guide the repair and development of synthetic human organs for transplantation.
"Our mouse embryo model not only develops a brain, but also a beating heart, all the components that go on to make up the body," said Zernicka-Goetz, Professor in Mammalian Development and Stem Cell Biology in Cambridge's Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience. "It's just unbelievable that we've got this far. This has been the dream of our community for years, and major focus of our work for a decade and finally we've done it."
For a human embryo to develop successfully, there needs to be a 'dialogue' between the tissues that will become the embryo, and the tissues that will connect the embryo to the mother. In the first week after fertilisation, three types of stem cells develop: one will eventually become the tissues of the body, and the other two support the embryo's development. One of these extraembryonic stem cell types will become the placenta, which connects the fetus to the mother and provides oxygen and nutrients; and the second is the yolk sac, where the embryo grows and where it gets its nutrients from in early development. Many pregnancies fail at the point when the three types of stem cells begin to send mechanical and chemical signals to each other, which tell the embryo how to develop properly.
"So many pregnancies fail around this time, before most women realise they are pregnant," said Zernicka-Goetz, who is also Professor of Biology and Biological Engineering at Caltech. "This period is the foundation for everything else that follows in pregnancy. If it goes wrong, the pregnancy will fail." Over the past decade, Professor Zernicka-Goetz's group in Cambridge has been studying these earliest stages of pregnancy, in order to understand why some pregnancies fail and some succeed.
"The stem cell embryo model is important because it gives us accessibility to the developing structure at a stage that is normally hidden from us due to the implantation of the tiny embryo into the mother's womb," said Zernicka-Goetz. "This accessibility allows us to manipulate genes to understand their developmental roles in a model experimental system."
To guide the development of their synthetic embryo, the researchers put together cultured stem cells representing each of the three types of tissue in the right proportions and environment to promote their growth and communication with each other, eventually self-assembling into an embryo.
The researchers found that the extraembryonic cells signal to embryonic cells by chemical signals but also mechanistically, or through touch, guiding the embryo's development.
"This period of human life is so mysterious, so to be able to see how it happens in a dish -- to have access to these individual stem cells, to understand why so many pregnancies fail and how we might be able to prevent that from happening -- is quite special," said Zernicka-Goetz. "We looked at the dialogue that has to happen between the different types of stem cell at that time -- we've shown how it occurs and how it can go wrong."
A major advance in the study is the ability to generate the entire brain, in particular the anterior part, which has been a major goal in the development of synthetic embryos. This works in Zernicka-Goetz's system because this part of the brain requires signals from one of the extraembryonic tissues to be able to develop. The team thought that this might be taking place from their 2018 and 2021 studies, which used the same component cells to develop into embryos at a slightly earlier stage. Now, by pushing development just one day further, they can definitively say that their model is the very first to signal development of the anterior, and in fact the whole, brain.
"This opens new possibilities to study the mechanisms of neurodevelopment in an experimental model," said Zernicka-Goetz. "In fact, we demonstrate the proof of this principle in the paper by knocking out a gene already known to be essential for formation of the neural tube, precursor of the nervous system, and for brain and eye development. In the absence of this gene, the synthetic embryos show exactly the known defects in brain development as in an animal carrying this mutation. This means we can begin to apply this kind of approach to the many genes with unknown function in brain development."
While the current research was carried out in mouse models, the researchers are developing similar human models with the potential to be directed towards the generation of specific organ types to understand mechanisms behind crucial processes that would be otherwise impossible to study in real embryos. At present, UK law permits human embryos to be studied in the laboratory only up to the 14th day of development. If the methods developed by Zernicka-Goetz's team are shown to be successful with human stem cells in future, they could also be used to guide the development of synthetic organs for patients awaiting transplants. "There are so many people around the world who wait for years for organ transplants," said Zernicka-Goetz. "What makes our work so exciting is that the knowledge coming out of it could be used to grow correct synthetic human organs to save lives that are currently lost. It should also be possible to affect and heal adult organs by using the knowledge we have on how they are made. "This is an incredible step forward and took 10 years of hard work of many of my team members -- I never thought we'd get to this place. New Delhi: Lt governor Manoj Sinha said on Tuesday that opening of a multiplex in Kashmir is part of the socio-economic revolution sweeping J&amp;K during last 3 years.
While inaugurating the 520-seater multiplex theatre in Srinagar, Sinha said land has been identified for developing a film city in the Union Territory (UT).
Congratulating the people, Vijay Dhar, owner of the multiplex and INOX Group on the occasion, the Lt Governor said that a major socio-economic revolution is sweeping through J&amp;K in the last 3 years and it is reflection of a new dawn of hope, dreams, confidence and aspirations of people, he added.
The Lt Governor observed that the opening of multipurpose cinema halls in Shopian, Pulwama and the first-ever multiplex cinema hall in Srinagar marks the revival of cinema culture in the Kashmir Valley after three decades.
"Culture is a way of life and cinema being the powerful medium of sharing thoughts and ideas reflects societal values and change. Cinema brings people together. Apart from entertainment, it gives hopes, dreams and inspiration to youth to pursue their dreams till they realise it," Sinha said.
Following the inauguration of two multi-purpose cinema halls in Pulwama and Shopian, the UT Government is building multi-purpose cinema halls in all the districts of J&amp;K.
"Young generations have a strong urge to see a better society, to learn about other cultures, to become part of inter-dependent world. And, it is the responsibility of the administration to provide them opportunities and support.
"The new cinema halls and ongoing film shootings will renew the beautiful bond between Jammu Kashmir and the Indian film industry.
"New film policy has been rolled out with special provisions and incentives for encouraging local youth to take up film as a career.
"We are in talks with various stakeholders and have identified the land for developing Film City in the UT and the facility will come up in the UT soon.
"Under the guidance of Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have accelerated the pace of implementation of numerous developmental initiatives.
"After August 2019, a new social order has been established in J&amp;K which promotes inclusive development, social harmony and equitable access to resources for all citizens without any discrimination. J&amp;K UT is today stronger and more self-confident than ever before," he added.
Subhash Chandra, former Member Parliament and Chairman Essel Group, congratulated the J&amp;K Government and everyone associated with the newly inaugurated multiplex on the occasion.&nbsp;
He also lauded the UT administration for the transformation taking place in Kashmir, through opening of cinema halls, which has a great legacy of film-making and a massive film loving population.
Rajat Sharma, Editor-In-Chief and Chairman, India TV, said that the cinema is the perfect medium to unite people. He appreciated the efforts of the Lt Governor and the UT administration for creating facilities to cater the needs of the Indian film industry and reviving a new-era of cinema in Kashmir.

New Delhi (The Hawk): The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation multiple projects worth over Rs 8000 crore in Amod, Bharuch, Gujarat today. The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Bulk Drug Park at Jambusar, Deep Sea Pipeline Project at Dahej, Phase 1 of Ankleshwar Airport and the development of Multilevel Industrial Sheds at Ankleshwar and Panoli. The Prime Minister also dedicated several projects which will give a boost to the chemicals sector in Gujarat including GACL Plant, Bharuch Underground Drainage and IOCL Dahej Koyali Pipeline.
At the outset, the Prime Minister paid tributes to Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav. “My relationship with Mulayam Singh Ji has been very special. As Chief Ministers, when we used to meet, there was a feeling of mutual regard and closeness”, he said. Remembering when after becoming the Prime Ministerial candidate, Shri Modi had reached out to leaders of the various parties, the Prime Minister said that Mulayam Singh Ji's words of blessings and advice are still very important to him. Mulayam Singh Ji maintained his 2013 blessings irrespective of changing times. Today, our daughters are not only living with dignity and working late but also, leading the lives of the communities”, he said. Due to long-term planning and leveraging of under-utilized resources, Gujarat has emerged as a manufacturing, industrial and business hub and many world-class facilities have emerged here. The Prime Minister reiterated his call for vocal-for-local. By resorting to local products and shunning imported products, every citizen can contribute to Aatmnirbhar Bharat, he said. He appealed for using locally made things during Diwali as they will help the local businesses and artisans. He said that the Indian economy has reached the fifth position from 10th place in 2014. The feat was made more momentous by the fact that India surpassed its erstwhile colonial masters. For this youth, farmers, workers, small and big businesses, and industrialists deserve credit, he said. He congratulated the people of Bharuch for getting involved in the noble task of saving lives by manufacturing drugs. Pandemic has made the importance of the pharma sector very clear, he said. “Gujarat helped the country a great deal in the war against Corona. Gujarat accounts for 25 per cent share of the country’s pharma export ”, the Prime Minister added.
The Prime Minister also recalled the time when some miscreants obstructed the path of development in Bharuch. He said, “When we came to power in 2014 and Gujarat felt the double-engine power of Narendra and Bhupendra, all obstructions were uprooted.” The Prime Minister pointed out the obstructions created by urban naxals during the development of Sardar Sarovar Dam. Pointing out the prevalence of naxalites in the states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the Prime Minister heaped praises on the tribal communities of Gujarat who did not let naxals pervade the state of Gujarat and saved the lives of the people of the state. The Prime Minister cautioned against letting urban-naxal get any foothold in the state. He said, without ensuring good education in science and mathematics, it is not possible to get proper advantage of affirmative action and other schemes, due to government efforts. Today, tribal youth are getting pilot training and becoming doctors, scientists and lawyers. The Prime Minister informed that the Adivasi community has contributed immensely to the journey of the development of the state and the country, and to honour their contribution the government had declared Janjatiya Gaurav Divas dedicated to the memory of brave tribal freedom fighters on the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda who is revered as by tribal communities across the country. In concluding the address, the Prime Minister said that the development of Bharuch and Ankleshwar is being carried out along the lines of twin city model of development, like that of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. “People are going to talk about Bharuch and Ankleshwar like they talk about New York and New Jersey”, he concluded. Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister of Chemical and Fertilisers, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, and Members of Parliament, Shri C R Patil and Shri Mansukh Vasava were those present on the occasion among others.
In yet another step to make India Aatmanirbhar in the pharmaceutical sector, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Bulk Drug Park at Jambusar. In 2021-22, bulk drugs accounted for over 60% of total pharmaceutical imports. The project will play a key role in ensuring import substitution and helping make India self-reliant for bulk drugs. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of the Deep Sea Pipeline Project at Dahej, which will help in the disposal of treated wastewater from industrial estates. Other projects whose foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister include Phase 1 of Ankleshwar Airport and the development of Multilevel Industrial Sheds at Ankleshwar and Panoli, which will give a boost to the MSME sector. The Prime Minister performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the development of multiple industrial parks. These include four Tribal Industrial Parks which will come up in Valia (Bharuch), Amirgadh (Banaskantha), Chakaliya (Dahod) and Vanar (Chhota Udaipur); Agro Food Park at Mudetha (Banaskantha); Sea Food Park at Kakwadi Danti (Valsad); and MSME Park at Khandivav (Mahisagar).

New Delhi (The Hawk): Today in Jamnagar, Gujarat, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation multiple irrigation, power, water supply, and urban infrastructure projects worth approximately Rs 1,450 crore. Among these are the Kalavad Group Augmentation water supply scheme of Kalavad/Jamnagar Taluka. Morbi-Maliya-Jodiya group Augmentation water supply scheme, Lalpur Bypass junction flyover Bridge, Hapa Market Yard Railway Crossing, and Sewer Collection pipeline and pumping station refurbishment. The Prime Minister inaugurated package 7 of Saurashtra Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) Yojana Link 3 (from Und Dam to Sonmati Dam), package 5 of SAUNI Yojana Link 1 (from Und-1 dam to SANI Dam), and the 40 MW Solar PV project at Haripar.
In his address, the Prime Minister thanked the people for the warm reception and blessings they had bestowed upon him during his journey to the event. The Prime Minister congratulated the people on the inauguration and groundbreaking of eight water, electricity, and connectivity-related projects. He went on to say that the foundation has been laid for a community hall for the Valmiki community, which will be a great asset for organising cultural programmes and other events.
The Prime Minister recalled the devastation caused twenty years ago by the earthquake. The tragedy and destruction caused by the earthquake left the entire state in a state of despair. However, through self-assurance and perseverance, Gujarat ascended to the top of the nation, vanquishing despondency and destruction. The Prime Minister requested that the people of Jamnagar pay their respects at the Smriti Van in memory of the victims of the Kutch Earthquake. He stated that the memorial is comparable in grandeur and solemnity to the 9/11 or Hiroshima memorials.
The Prime Minister recalled Jamsaheb Maharaja Digvijay Singh and paid tribute to his kindness to the Polish people during the second world war. This established a long-lasting relationship with the Polish people, which was of great assistance during the evacuation of Indians from Ukraine during the ongoing crisis. "Somewhere behind the assistance of the Polish government, Maharaja Digvijay Singh's generosity has played a significant role," he said. He stated that it is our endeavour to bring Jamsaheb to new heights. The Prime Minister remarked that Jamnagar has also made significant contributions to cricket. In 2020, the Saurashtra Ranji cricket team brought the trophy back and made everyone proud.
The Prime Minister informed everyone that five development resolutions have provided Gujarat with a solid foundation. People's (Jan) Shakti is the first resolution, followed by Knowledge (Gyan) Shakti, Water (Jal) Shakti, Energy (Urja) Shakti, and Raksha Shakti. Shri Modi added, "Gujarat is reaching new heights based on these five solid foundations."
The Prime Minister noted that the young generation is fortunate in that they have not encountered the problems that existed in the region and state twenty to twenty-five years ago. From the days when a chief minister would come for the inauguration of a water tank to the present day, when projects worth more than the budget of the past are inaugurated in a single visit, a great deal has changed. He stated today that under the SAUNI plan, Maa Narmada is reaching every nook and cranny. In a similar manner, the Jal Jeevan Mission is bringing piped water to every home. He praised the Chief Minister for implementing the initiatives of the central government with diligence and swiftness.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the welfare of the poor is his government's top priority. He stated that the top priority during the pandemic was ensuring that no family went hungry. More than eighty crore people are receiving free rations to endure the pandemic without going hungry. The Prime Minister stated that the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna has been extended until December of this year so that no poor family will have to sleep hungry during these difficult times. He also mentioned the benefits of the One Nation One Ration Card Scheme and emphasised that people from all over India who come to Jamnagar to earn a living can take advantage of it.
The Prime Minister stated, in reference to Jamnagar's oil refinery and oil-based economy, that every resident would be proud that crude oil is refined on this very land. Shri Modi stated that the dual-engine government of the Centre and the State has worked ceaselessly for the industrial and infrastructure development of the state. Shri Modi recalled a time when the city was clogged with traffic and stated that efforts are being made to increase connectivity by building planned roads, flyovers, and underpasses to improve the lives of the citizens. He added that the Amritsar-Bhatinda-Jamnagar Corridor is being constructed at a cost of Rs 26,000 crore. Jamnagar is becoming the centre of manufacturing and coast-driven growth. He stated that the Jamnagar-based WHO International Center for Traditional Medicine is a crown for Jamnagar Ayurvedic University, which has become a national university. According to the Prime Minister, Jamnagar is becoming a centre associated with auspicious objects such as bangles, sindoor, and bandhani, transforming into a "Saubhagya Nagar."
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed his dedication to facilitating business. He discussed the reduction in regulatory burden. About 33,000 compliances and rules have been eliminated. Similarly, the decriminalisation of company laws benefits the business sector. He also discussed India's rise in various economic indices, particularly the Indian economy's rise to fifth place from tenth place in 2014. India rose from 142nd to 63rd in the ease of doing business in 20120, from 142nd in 2014. He praised the state government for implementing a forward-thinking Industrial policy. The Prime Minister praised the state government's efforts to remove encroachment and clean up the state's coastline. He stated that the Jamnagar Coastline offers ecotourism opportunities. It has an abundance of species.

The Prime Minister inaugurated package 7 of Saurashtra Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) Yojana Link 3 (from Und Dam to Sonmati Dam), package 5 of SAUNI Yojana Link 1 (from Und-1 dam to SANI Dam), and the 40 MW Solar PV project at Haripar.

Montreal (Quebec): According to McGill University research, different forms of brain injury produced by a concussion may cause identical symptoms in youngsters. A novel approach to investigating concussions could aid in the development of future medicines.
While most children heal completely from a concussion, some will experience long-term effects. The findings published in the journal 'eLife', assist to clarify the complex relationship that exists between symptoms and physical damage.
The researchers found that certain combinations of brain damage were associated with specific symptoms such as attention difficulties. Other symptoms, such as sleep problems, occurred in children with multiple types of injuries. For example, damage to areas of the brain that are essential for controlling sleep and wakefulness could cause challenges with sleeping, as could damage to brain regions that control mood.
To do this, they examined how damage to the brain resulting from concussion affected its structural connection network, known as white matter. They then used statistical modelling techniques to see how these changes related to 19 different symptoms reported by the children or their caregivers.
"Despite decades of research, no new treatment targets and therapies for concussions have been identified in recent years," says lead author Guido Guberman, a Vanier Scholar and MDCM Candidate at McGill University. "This is likely because damage to the brain caused by concussions, and the symptoms that result from it, can vary widely across individuals. In our study, we wanted to explore the relationships that exist between the symptoms of concussion and the nature of the injury in more detail."
Guberman and his colleagues analysed data collected from 306 children, aged nine to 10 years old, who had previously had a concussion. The children were all participants in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. "The methods used in our study provide a novel way of conceptualising and studying concussions," says senior author Maxime Descoteaux, a Professor of Computer Science at Universite de Sherbrooke. "Once our results are validated and better understood, they could be used to explore potential new treatment targets for individual patients. More broadly, it would be interesting to see if our methods could also be used to gather new insights on neurological diseases that likewise cause varied symptoms among patients." —ANI

Moreover, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Poyang Lake, the upper reaches of the Yellow River and Songhua River are likely to witness flooding above designated warning levels. However, regional storms and floods may hit waterways across Huaihe, Taihu Lake, the Zhujiang River, and the rivers on Hainan Island. Additionally, there will be four to six typhoons expected in the Northwest Pacific and the South China Sea. Two to three typhoons are likely to make landfall or influence weather systems across the country, Global Times reported. The Chinese authorities warned the people about geological disaster risks in North China, Northeast China, the southeastern part of Northwest China and East China in August due to the impact of typhoons and rainstorms. Jaipur: A woman in Rajasthan has given birth to quadruplets -- two boys and two girls.  Dr. Shalini Aggarwal of the Ayushman Hospital said Kiran Kanwar (28), a resident of Wazirpura, was brought to the hospital by her family members when she started labour pain at 2 a.m. on Sunday.  The woman was operated upon and delivered at around 6 a.m. in the morning.
According to Aggarwal, the weight of three newborns is 1 kg and 350 grams, while the fourth weighs 1 kg and 650 grams.  "These children need special monitoring. The three children weighing 1 kg and 350 grams have been referred to Zanana Hospital for safety. The fourth is kept with his mother," she added.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested five persons, including K.B. Singh, the executive Director of Gail India Ltd, in connection with the Rs 50 lakh bribery case, sources said.&nbsp;
The CBI is also conducting raids in Noida, Visakhapatnam and Delhi at the premises belonging to the executive Director of GAIL India Ltd and others.
Sources, the raids have been underway since Monday night.
“We are conducting raids at the premises belonging to K.B. Singh, one of the Gail officials. We questioned a few persons in this connection,” said the source.
The source said that the accused used to take bribes for favouring the bribe giver in getting different Gail India projects.
All the accused will be produced before a special CBI court. The CBI will seek their custodial remand.

Hyderabad: Microphones fell silent and rallies ended as the longest campaigning period for the assembly elections among the five states going to polls came to a close in Telangana at 5 pm on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj said, “It is 5 pm and the. silent period has started. There are various restrictions that are put in place by the Election Commission of India. In the last 48 hours, basically tranquil period given to the voters to mull over things and come to a conclusion.”  The model code of conduct came into force in the state after the Elections Commission announced the schedule on October 9. There are 3.26 crore eligible voters in the state.  According to the CEO, prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC have been promulgated across the state. BRS has fielded candidates in all 119 seats.  As per the seat sharing agreement, BJP and Jana Sena are contesting in 111 and 8 seats respectively while Congress gave one seat to its ally CPI(M). Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM has put up candidates in nine segments in the city.  The BRS is trying to retain power for a third consecutive term, while the Congress has been fighting tooth and nail to wrest power from it. The BJP has left no stone unturned to get to power.
As many as 2,290 contestants are in the fray for the upcoming elections, including BRS supremo and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, his minister-son K T Rama Rao, TPCC president A Revanth Reddy and BJP Lok Sabha members Bandi Sanjay Kumar, D Arvind and Soyam Bapu Rao.  KCR is contesting from two segments-Gajwel and Kamareddy- and so is Revanth Reddy from Kodangal and Kamareddy. The BJP fielded its MLA, Etala Rajender, from Gajwel, besides Huzurabad, where he is the incumbent legislator.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed several meetings during the campaign period, besides holding a roadshow in Hyderabad on Monday amid huge fanfare while KCR attended 96 poll rallies.  Other than PM Modi, several union ministers including Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, and Congress leaders Mallikrajun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi canvassed for votes for their respective party candidates.  The BRS campaign centred around the previous Congress regime's failures and ongoing welfare measures for farmers and women. Rao also highlighted his struggle to achieve Telangana statehood.  Congress focussed mainly on the alleged corruption of the BRS government while highlighting its “six guarantees”.  The saffron party’s campaign stressed on the necessity of “double engine government” and pointed to “family rule" of KCR and alleged corruption.  Much to the embarrassment of the ruling KCR government, the National Dam Safety Authority gave an adverse report on the sinking of a barrage which is part of Kaleshwaram irrigation project, which has provided ammo to the opposition.  More than 2.5 lakh staff will be engaged in poll duties for the assembly elections, Chief Electoral officer Vikas Raj has said. The counting of votes will be taken up on December 3.  For the first time in Telangana, “home voting facility was provided to the persons with disabilities and voters above 80 years. As on November 28, law enforcement agencies have seized cash, gold, liquor, freebies among others all worth about Rs 737 crore in the state ever since the model code of conduct came into force in the state on October 9", an official release said.  The EC has ordered all private establishments including IT firm to declare holiday on November 30 to enable employees to exercise their franchise.

Greater Noida: Several people were left injured in a 12-vehicle pile-up on Uttar Pradesh's Yamuna Expressway early on Wednesday morning due to dense fog that resulted in low visibility, authorities said.  The incident occurred near the Dayanatpur Village of Jewar police station area. Noida police officers reached the spot and initiated an inquiry into the accident.  All the injured persons were taken out of the damaged vehicles and have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Washington: A new study found that obese people are more likely to develop monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), a benign blood condition that usually arises before multiple myeloma. The results of the study were published in Blood Advances. Multiple myeloma is a cancer"&gt;blood cancer that affects plasma cells, which are white blood cells that create antibodies to combat infection. MGUS, caused by an aberrant protein generated by plasma cells, is a known precursor to multiple myeloma. Most patients with MGUS have no noticeable symptoms and are not immediately unwell. Rather, the existence of MGUS acts as a warning to watch for the possible development of more serious disorders, such as multiple myeloma, which MGUS can progress to. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2020 that nearly 42% of the US population is classified as obese, defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Yet, little research exists to suggest how obesity may impact cancer outcomes. "While significant advancements have been made in therapeutics for multiple myeloma, it remains an incurable disease, often diagnosed after patients have already experienced end-organ damage," explained David Lee, MD, MPH, MMSc, an internal medicine resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. "It's preceded by premalignant conditions including MGUS. Our research group is focused on investigating risk factors and etiology of MGUS to better understand who may be at increased risk for developing MGUS and its progression to multiple myeloma." Investigators enrolled 2,628 individuals from across the United States who were at elevated risk of developing multiple myeloma, based on self-identified race and family history of hematologic malignancies, between February 2019 and March 2022. Participants were screened for MGUS, defined by the presence of monoclonal proteins at serum concentrations of 0.2g/L or greater. Investigators measured MGUS using mass spectrometry - a novel, highly sensitive method of identifying and quantifying monoclonal proteins in the blood. After controlling for age, sex, race, education, and income, the team found that being obese was associated with 73% higher odds of having MGUS, compared to individuals with normal weights. This association remained unchanged when accounting for physical activity. However, highly active individuals (defined as doing the equivalent of running or jogging 45-60 minutes per day or more) were less likely to have MGUS even after adjusting for BMI class, whereas those who reported heavy smoking and short sleep were more likely to also have detectable levels of MGUS. Limitations include that this was a cross sectional study - a snapshot of how certain variables or characteristics may relate to one another at a single point in time. While investigators found a strong correlation between MGUS, obesity, and lifestyle factors, they do not have enough evidence to assume causation. Additionally, the American Medical Association recently voted to adopt a new policy that no longer uses BMI alone to assess whether someone is of a healthy weight, as previous research suggests the metric does not effectively distinguish between fat and lean mass and does not account for how fat is distributed throughout the body. The formula was created based on data from non-Hispanic white populations, suggesting its implications cannot accurately be generalized across Black, Asian, and Hispanic groups. Going forward, researchers will aim to validate these findings in other study cohorts, including individuals who are followed longitudinally, to further explore the mechanisms through which obesity and other modifiable risk factors might influence the development and progression of MGUS. "These results guide our future research in understanding the influence of modifiable risk factors, such as weight, exercise, and smoking, on cancer risk," explained Dr. Lee. "Before we can develop effective preventative health strategies to lower the risk of serious diseases like multiple myeloma, we first need to better understand the relationship between MGUS and potentially modifiable risk factors like obesity." —ANI
