London News: Oil prices have surged after several of the world's largest oil exporters announced surprise cuts in production.

The price of Brent crude oil was trading above $84 a barrel in Asia after jumping by more than $4, or 5 per cent, the BBC reported.

The increase came after Saudi Arabia, Iraq and several Gulf states said on Sunday they were cutting output by more than one million barrels a day.

Oil prices soared when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but are now back at levels seen before the war began.

However, the US has been calling for producers to increase output in order to push energy prices lower.

High energy and fuel prices last year helped to drive up inflation - the rate at which prices rise - putting pressure on many households' finances.

The reduction in output is being made by members of the OPEC+ oil producers. The group accounts for about 40 per cent of all the world's crude oil output, the BBC reported.

Saudi Arabia is reducing output by 500,000 barrels per day and Iraq by 211,000. The UAE, Kuwait, Algeria and Oman are also making cuts.

A Saudi energy ministry official said the move was "a precautionary measure aimed at supporting the stability of the oil market", the official Saudi Press Agency said.

Nathan Piper, an independent oil analyst said the move by OPEC+ appeared to be an attempt to keep the oil price above $80 a barrel in the medium term, given that demand could be hit by a weakening global economy and sanctions have had a "limited impact" on restricting Russian oil supplies, the BBC reported. The event marked a collaborative effort to promote environmental awareness and community participation as part of Mission LiFE - Lifestyle for Environment, an initiative of the Government of India. Indian Ambassador Adarsh Swaika, Head of UN-Habitat GCC Ameera Alhassan lauded the beach cleaning initiative. Apart from them ambassadors from Peru, Indonesia, Ghana, Afghanistan, Morocco, Romania, Vietnam, Cambodia in Kuwait also graced the event with their presence. Environmental degradation and climate change are global phenomena where actions in one part of the world impact ecosystems and populations across the globe. Estimates suggest that if requisite action is not taken against the changing environment, approximately 3 billion people globally could experience chronic water scarcity. The global economy could lose up to 18 per cent of GDP by 2050. Over the last two decades, several macro measures have been implemented globally to address environmental degradation and climate change, including policy reforms, economic incentives and regulations. Despite their enormous potential, actions required at the level of individuals, communities and institutions have received limited attention. Changing individual and community behaviour alone can make a significant dent in the environmental and climate crises. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), if one billion people out of the global population of eight billion adopt environment-friendly behaviours in their daily lives, global carbon emissions could drop by approximately 20 per cent. In this context, the concept of 'Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow on 1st November 2021, calling upon the global community of individuals and institutions to drive LiFE as an international mass movement towards "mindful and deliberate utilisation, instead of mindless and destructive consumption" to protect and preserve the environment. Kuwait City: Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Adarsh Swaika called on the Naval Chief of Kuwait Brigadier General Hazza Al-Alati and discussed the strengthening of Navy-to-Navy cooperation between India and Kuwait.  "Amb @AdarshSwaika1 called on the Chief of Naval Forces of Kuwait H.E Brigadier General Hazza Al-Alati. Discussions pertained to further strengthening navy to navy cooperation. Ambassador thanked him for the support for the upcoming visit of Indian naval ship Vishakhapatnam," India in Kuwait tweeted.  Earlier this week, on the corporation between the two countries on the security front, the Indian envoy said, "The defence and security relations have so far been limited to training and medical cooperation. Four Indian ships visited Kuwait in July and October of last year. An Indian warship (ANS Visakhapatnam guided missile destroyer) is expected to visit Kuwait in August." Ambassador Swaika also thanked the Brigadier for the support to the upcoming visit of INS Vishakhapatnam. Earlier this week, the Indian Ambassador to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika, affirmed the depth of the bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries, according to Al-Qabas Daily. Underlining the significant contribution of the Indian community to bolstering the Kuwaiti economy, Ambassador Swaika said the bilateral memorandum of understanding regarding domestic workers was signed in June 2021, Al-Qabas Daily reported. He added that he considers Kuwait’s accession as a partner in the dialogue with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during the Indian presidency as a welcome step. “The area of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has not yet covered any of the countries in the Middle East. The entry of Iran as a full member and the entry of Kuwait and the Arab Emirates will add to the organization’s deliberations an essential value," the ambassador said. Most of the discussions in the organisation are related to combating terrorism and ensuring regional security, which also closely pertains to this region, the report noted. The Indian Ambassador, on Sunday, called on the Information Minister of the State of Kuwait, Abdulrahman B Almutairi. Kuwait City: Bilateral trade between India and Kuwait has touched an all time-high of USD 12.5 billion, Indian ambassador to Kuwait Adarsh Swaika said, according to the Arab News Online. Trade between the two countries have has seen a 90 per cent yearly jump and while currently it is skewed towards hydrocarbon exports from Kuwait and exports of mainly food products from India, bilateral trade has the potential for diversification the envoy said. “There are excellent possibilities in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, automobiles and related spares, electronics goods and components, high-efficiency solar PV modules, textiles and apparel, white goods, ceramics, etc. But the main potential area of cooperation is in the field of investments from Kuwait to India because of the attractive political and financial investment climate that the country provides, the Indian ambassador told Arab News online. “But the main potential area of cooperation is in the field of investments from Kuwait to India because of the attractive political and financial investment climate that the country provides. This has set the bar of bilateral cooperation very high. This demonstration of shared solidarity has brought us closer. “We had a significant investment seminar recently in which the representative of the Apollo group participated. He told me of the interest on the Kuwaiti side in such collaboration. The second thing is how Indian medicines can be made available in Kuwait much more cost-effectively. Ironically, Indian medication, many of which are US FDA approved, is not available in Kuwait. The Embassy is working on this. The third issue is of immense opportunities available in India for medical and wellness treatment. This would not only be much more cost-effective but of a world-class standard,” he added. Regarding medical cooperation, the ambassador said that medicine is a promising sector with tremendous potential for further growth. He further added that most of the Kuwaitis go to India for medical treatment. “Today, most Kuwaitis who go for medical treatment abroad generally go at Government cost to Western countries predominantly. At the same time, India is one place that attracts people from all over the world, including the Western world and, more importantly, from its neighbourhood and extended neighbourhood, for medical treatment. This is because it provides quality health care at an affordable cost,” he said. “There are chains of private hospitals specialising in different areas, e.g., Apollo, Narayana Hyudalaya, Medanta, Shankar Netralaya, Fortis, etc. Given our solid historical linkages, geographical proximity, cultural affinity, and people-to-people contacts, India should be the preferred destination for medical treatment for Kuwaitis. The Embassy is working on this with both the Kuwaiti side and the Indian hospital chains,” he added. Talking about India’s growing economy, Swaika said that the country is one of the few major economies that has grown over 6 per cent consistently in the last few years and is expected to continue doing so, reported Arab News online. India is the fifth largest economy currently, the third most significant in terms of purchasing power parity and is projected to be a USD 5 trillion economy by 2030. The 102nd ranked side India was restricted to its own half early on as Kuwait dominated the ball possession, but Indian midfielders improved as game went on, making some chances for the strikers. Sahal Abdul Samad had the first chance of scoring for India but before he could shoot, he was closed down inside the box. Seconds later, a cross by Nikhil Poojary went to Sunil Chhetri, but the shot flew over the crossbar. Mahesh Naorem made another shooting opportunity in 27th minute with a freekick but Akash Mishra failed to take the ball to the target. Hosts also failed to convert a long range effort during the final moments of first half.
The Indian defence was pretty solid in the first half, well led by Sandesh Jhingan and they did not allow Kuwait strikers to make inroads into the goal. Kuwait played the second half with greater endeavour but despite consistency in effort, they lacked in precision.  Suresh Singh's promising attempt at goal flew off the target in 71st minute but four minutes later, Manvir ended the deadlock, receiving a cross by Lallianzuala Chhangte and smashing a half volley into the nets. Kuwait upped the attack in final moments of the match but the goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sidhu and defenders kept the goal guarded well. This is India's second win over Kuwait, after beating them by 5-4 via penalties following 1-1 draw at SAFF Championship final in July. India's next clash is against World number 61 Qatar on November 21 in their second group A match. Group A also features Afghanistan. These four teams will play each other in home-aeay round-robin format. The top two finishers in the group will make it the FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC qualifiers third round while also earning a direct spot into the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

"With great sadness and sorrow, we--the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world--mourn the late His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who passed away to his Lord today," Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Al Sabah, the minister of his emiri court, said in a statement on Saturday as it aired on state television, according to Al Jazeera. Sheikh Nawaf was sworn-in in September 2020, following the death in the United States of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, at the age of 91.  Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber, Kuwait's deputy ruler and half-brother, is said to be in a position to succeed him as ruler; however, no formal declaration has been made yet, Al Jazeera reported. Sheikh Nawaf maintained positions of influence for decades before ascending to the throne. In 2006, he was named heir apparent, and he was acting as defence minister when Iraqi soldiers invaded the oil-rich emirate in 1990. In the wake of threats from armed organisations, he also served as interior minister. Sheikh Nawaf was sent to the hospital in late November for an undisclosed ailment, according to the state news agency KUNA. He was well-liked within the ruling al-Sabah family, had a reputation for humility, and kept a low profile.

Kuwait will have to grapple with long-running strains between the ruling family and its critics in the deadlocked and fractious parliament that critics say has hindered fiscal and economic reform.  The country's legislature wields more influence than similar bodies in other Gulf monarchies, and political deadlock has for decades led to cabinet reshuffles and dissolutions of parliament.

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have registered a case against three people on charges of illegal entry after they arrived on a boat from Kuwait, an official said on Wednesday.
Prima facie, nothing suspicious was found on the boat which was anchored at the Gateway of India on Tuesday, he said.  The trio hail from Tamil Nadu. They went to Kuwait two years back for work.
They were allegedly ill-treated by their agent who took them to Kuwait following which they escaped from there, the official said.  The boat was checked after it was anchored at the Gateway of India, he said.  A case was registered against the three people by the Colaba police under provisions of the Passports Act for illegal entry, the official said.  Notably, 10 Pakistani terrorists who launched a terror strike in Mumbai in November 2008 had arrived by the sea route.

Boat from Kuwait arrives in Mumbai: Case registered against 3 on board

Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Wednesday arrested three persons for entering India illegally, a day after they reached the metropolis on a boat from Kuwait, an official said.
The boat with the trio on board was anchored at the Gateway of India on Tuesday. Prima facie, nothing suspicious was found on the boat, he said.  The trio hails from Tamil Nadu.  After the boat was found, a case was registered against them by the Colaba police here, the official said.  "The police arrested them after filing a case under section 3 (a) with penal section 6 (a) of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules for not following the due procedures required for entering India," he added.  According to the official, the trio had gone to Kuwait two years back for work. They were allegedly ill-treated by their agent who took them to Kuwait following which they escaped from there.
Further investigation into the case was on, he said.  The incident has raised concerns over potential maritime security lapses.  Notably, 10 Pakistani terrorists who launched a terror strike in Mumbai in November 2008 had arrived by the sea route. The terror attacks had claimed the lives of 166 individuals and left more than 300 people injured.
