India needed to win the Pool A contest by at least a 15-0 margin to qualify and the young players delivered under pressure. Both India and Pakistan finished on four points each in Pool A behind Japan but the defending champions qualified for the Super 4s due to better goal difference. Senior officials in the quake-hit areas said the tremors triggered panic among residents and were strongly felt in some areas, but there were no initial reports of damages or casualties. So far, 17 people on board the ill-fated vessel have been rescued. According to the official, the ship suffered an engine failure when it was hit by huge waves in the strait after departing from the Paotere Harbor in Makassar, the capital of the province.The ship was heading to a seaport in Pangkajene district.—IANS

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has expressed condolences to the families of victims who lost their lives during a stampede at a football match in Indonesia that killed 174 people.
"Deeply saddened by the tragedy at the football stadium in #kanjuruhan #Malang. Extend my condolences to the bereaved families and to our Indonesian friends. Wish the injured a speedy recovery," Jaishankar tweeted.
The violence broke out at a stadium in East Java during a game between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya. At least 174 people died in the stampede, Deputy East Java Governor Emil Dardak told local media on Sunday afternoon. Other official or government-backed sources put the number between 129 and 182. The resulting stampede led to cases of suffocation. After the match in East Java province between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended on Saturday night, supporters from the losing team invaded the pitch to express their frustration, police said. FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Sunday said that the riot and ensuing stampede at a football match is a "dark day" for the sport.

Jakarta: The deaths of nearly 100 children in Indonesia have prompted the country to suspend sales of all syrup and liquid medication, the media reported.
It comes just weeks after a cough syrup in The Gambia was linked to the deaths of nearly 70 children, the BBC reported.
Indonesia said some syrup medicine was found to contain ingredients linked to acute kidney injuries (AKI), which have killed 99 young children this year.
It is not clear if the medicine were imported or locally produced.
On Thursday, Indonesian health officials said they had reported around 200 cases of AKI in children, most of who were aged under five. Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over four cough syrups that were linked to the deaths of almost 70 children in The Gambia.
The WHO found the syrups used there -- made by an Indian pharmaceutical company -- contained "unacceptable amounts" of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The syrups have been "potentially linked with acute kidney injuries", said the organisation.
Indonesia's Health Minister on Thursday said the same chemical compounds were also found in some medicines used locally. "Some syrups that were used by AKI child patients under five were proven to contain ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol that were not supposed to be there, or of very little amount," said Budi Gunadi Sadikin, BBC reported.
However, he did not disclose how many cases involved the toxic medicines. Indonesian authorities said the cough syrups used in The Gambia were not sold locally.
One epidemiologist said the true death toll could be even higher than reported. "When cases like these happen, (what we know is) the tip of the iceberg, which means there could be far more victims," Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist from Griffith University told BBC Indonesia. —IANS

He will attend US-ASEAN and East Asia summit in Cambodia on November 12-13 and will travel to Indonesia for attending the G20 summit from November 13-16. "President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will visit Egypt, Cambodia, and Indonesia. On November 11th, President Biden will attend the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt," a White House release said.
At COP27, he will build on the significant work the United States has undertaken to advance the global climate fight and help the most vulnerable build resilience to climate impacts, and he will highlight the need for the world to act in this decisive decade.
Apart from Egypt, Biden will also visit Cambodia, and Indonesia as part of his North Africa and Asia visit. The President will then be in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from November 12-13 to participate in the annual US-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit.
In Cambodia, he will reaffirm the United States' "enduring commitment" to Southeast Asia and ASEAN centrality, building on the success of the historic US-SEAN Special Summit in Washington, DC. He will underscore the importance of U.S.-ASEAN cooperation in ensuring security and prosperity in the region, and the well-being of its combined one billion people.
The President will be in Bali, Indonesia from November 13-16 for the G20 Leaders' Summit. In Bali, the President will commend President Joko Widodo's leadership of the G20 and highlight the US commitment to this premier forum for economic cooperation with countries representing more than 80 per cent of the world's GDP.
He will work with G20 partners to address the key challenges such as climate change, the global impact of war on Ukraine, including on energy and food security and affordability, and a range of other priorities important to the global economic recovery, the White House said.
Following Biden's travel in Asia and North Africa, Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Bangkok, Thailand to attend the November 18-19 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting.
The Vice President's participation will underscore the US commitment to economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and she will outline US goals for our APEC host year in 2023. During her visit to Thailand, the Vice President will engage with Thai leaders and civil society representatives to reaffirm and strengthen the US-Thai Alliance and to discuss cooperation across a range of issues.

The President emphasised that being responsible entails persistently upholding international law and the goals and objectives of the UN Charter as well as fostering win-win rather than zero-sum situations.
Widodo urged people to act intelligently, take responsibility, and lead by saying, "We should not divide the globe into sections."

The world community is counting on the major economies to improve macroeconomic policy coordination and advance multilateralism, openness, inclusivity, and win-win collaboration during the summit.
The G20, which was founded in 1999, serves as a focal point for global collaboration on financial and economic concerns.
It includes the European Union and 19 other nations.

New Delhi: India and Indonesia are both home to the world's largest Islamic populations, Indonesia is the world's largest Islamic country and India is home to the third largest Muslim population in the world, said National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at an event in India Islamic Cultural Centre in New Delhi.
"Much like in India, Islam in Indonesia was spread by traders from present-day Kerala and Gujarat and Sufis from Bengal and Kashmir. This peaceful spread led to the development of a syncretic culture, where not only pre-Islamic religions flourished side by side, but age-old traditions and local customs greatly influenced religious practices," the NSA said.
"We may speak different languages, but we share a common desire for peace and harmony. Our dialogue today is a vital medium to help us achieve that objective," he said. He was speaking during a discussion on the role of Ulema in fostering interfaith peace and social harmony in India and Indonesia, to an Indonesian delegation that included senior Muslim scholars of Indonesia and representatives of other faiths.
Doval said that Indonesia is an important partner in India's extended neighbourhood and our two countries share many complementarities. "We have had vast and extended cultural, economic and spiritual contacts for 1600 years upto the 14th Century. These contacts showed us the value of openness, engagement and respect for diversity," he said.
India and Indonesia are both flourishing democracies in the Indo-Pacific region; the waters that lap the shores of Indonesia also lap our shores; they have historical and cultural linkages and extensive people-to-people ties. Tourism has been an important ambassador of cooperation between our two countries. Before the Pandemic, 5 Lakh Indians visited Bali every year. While the Taj Mahal is a major tourist attraction in India, in Indonesia people visit Hindu temples like Prambanan. This is a shining example of our tolerant and syncretic cultures, he said.
He added that the Ulemas play a very important role in Islamic society. The aim of today's discussion is to bring together Indian and Indonesian Ulema and scholars who can take forward our cooperation in promoting tolerance, harmony and peaceful co-existence. This will bolster the fight against violent extremism, terrorism and radicalisation.
"None of the ends for which extremism, radicalisation and the misuse of religion are employed are justifiable on any ground. This is a distortion of religion against which all of us need to raise our voices. Extremism and terrorism are against the very meaning of Islam because Islam means peace and well-being (Salamati/Asalaam). Opposition to such forces should not be painted as a confrontation with any religion. That is a ruse," the NSA said.
Top Indonesian minister Mohammed Mahfud MD is in Delhi on the invitation of National Security Advisor Doval.
Mahfud, the Coordinating Minister for the Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia is accompanied by a high-level delegation of Ulema.
Visiting Ulema from Indonesia will also be interacting with their Indian counterparts. The discussion will be on the 'Role of Ulema in fostering a culture of interfaith peace and social harmony in India and Indonesia'. —ANI

New Delhi: Indian Naval ship Karmuk, an indigenously built Missile Corvette along with L-58 (indigenously built Landing Craft Utility vessel) and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft will be participating in the Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT), the defence ministry said in a press release.
The 39th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy is being conducted from December 8-19. The CORPAT will be executed along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) from December 15 to 16 and will end at Port Blair.
According to the press release, the Indian Navy is engaging with various countries in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to enhance regional maritime security, as part of India's vision SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region).
India and Indonesia have been carrying out CORPATs twice a year since 2002, with an aim of keeping this vital part of the IOR safe and secure for commercial shipping, international trade and conduct of legitimate maritime activities.
CORPATs help build understanding and interoperability between navies and facilitate the institution of measures to prevent and suppress Illegal Unreported Unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery and piracy. It further helps enhance the operational synergy by exchange of information for the prevention of smuggling, and illegal immigration and for the conduct of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations at sea.
India and Indonesia have traditionally enjoyed a close and friendly relationship covering a wide spectrum of activities and interactions. The 39th edition of IND-INDO CORPAT seeks to bolster the maritime cooperation between the two navies and forge strong bonds of friendship between India and Indonesia, the statement reads. The 38th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol took place between June 13-24 this year. The 28th edition of IND-INDO CORPAT commenced with the arrival of KRI Cut Nyak Dien at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The opening ceremony was conducted on June 14 22 under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar Command. The Indonesian warship during its three-day port call at Port Blair participated in multiple activities including professional discussions, pre-sail conference, and various sports fixtures. —ANI

At the 4th ASEAN-Indian Blue Economy Workshop held today Secretary (East) Saurabh Kumar highlighted the importance of sustainable development and connectivity. Taking to Twitter, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "India and Indonesia organise the 4th ASEAN-India Blue Economy Workshop on Dec 15-16 with @RIS_NewDelhi, @nmfindia &amp; @ERIAorg."
SecretaryEast Ambassador Saurabh Kumar addressed the Workshop as India and ASEAN take steps to enhance Blue Economy cooperation as Comprehensive Strategic Partners," Bagchi said.
Bagchi also said that Kumar highlighted the importance of sustainable development, connectivity, Science and Technology and safety and security to further this cooperation. The last edition of the ASEAN-Indian Blue Economy Workshop took place in Thailand in September 2019.
The Workshop noted the significance of the Chair's chosen theme for the year, namely "Advancing Partnership for Sustainability", as well as Thailand's agenda on sustainability and connectivity in the context of promoting a sustainable blue economy through the sustainable harnessing of marine resources, including aquaculture, combatting marine debris and addressing Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing, according to the statement released by ASEAN 2019.
These themes - sustainability and connectivity - were also noted in the context of enhancing maritime connectivity.
The Workshop welcomed the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) which has as one of its priorities maritime cooperation and can help promote maritime cooperation between ASEAN and India.
The Workshop welcomed ASEAN's proactive initiative to establish an ASEAN Network for Combatting IUU Fishing (AN-IUU) and the contribution that the adoption of the Bangkok Declaration on Combatting Marine Debris and the ASEAN Framework of Action on Marine Debris earlier this year will have on efforts in this regard, the statement reads.
Discussions also explored useful capacity-building activities, guest lectures and exchange of visits to discuss further, specific areas of cooperation in the context of the Blue Economy between ASEAN and India, through related agencies such as the National Maritime Foundation, the Phuket Marine Biological Center, the ASEAN Center for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD) and the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), the statement added.
On November 12, India and ASEAN upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), the highest-tier relationship the grouping has with countries outside the bloc. —ANI

Sao Paulo (Brazil): Ace Indian shuttler Pramod Bhagat and World No 4 Sukant Kadam have secured their spots in the semi-finals of the ongoing Brazil Para-Badminton International 2023, here.

The Padma Shri Awardee Bhagat reached the semi-finals in singles and men's doubles event while Kadam has reached the semi-finals of men's singles and doubles.

Pramod eased past Peru's Pedro Pablo De Vinatea 21-7, 21-12 in the men's single quarter final clash. It took him just 30 minutes to book a clash with Japan's Daisuke Fujihara in the semi-finals.

He also secured a semi-final spot in the men's doubles with his partner Sukant Kadam. The duo defeated Peru's pair of Pedro Pablo De Vinatea and Renzo Diquez Bances Morales.

The match lasted for 25 minutes, and the final score read 21-10 and 21-14. The duo will now face India's Kumar Nitesh and Tarun in the semi-finals.

However, Pramod had to face a loss in the mixed doubles with his partner Manisha Ramadass as the pair went down fighting to Indonesia's Hikmat Ramdani and Leani Ratri Oktila.

On the other hand, Sukant Kadam won a hard-fought quarterfinal against India's Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj. The match was tight and went all the way to 3 sets. Sukant put on a great fight and had all the answers for Suhas and the final score read 29-27, 11-21 and 21-17.

Sukant will now face Tarun in the semi-final clash. IANS

Be it the Commonwealth or Olympics-bound Indian contingent or the youth taking part in the Khelo India Games, ‘Mann ki Baat’ has become a platform where the country’s achievements on the sports front are brought to light. And today, when ‘Mann ki Baat’ is going to hit its century-mark on 30th April 2023, I am sure that all its episodes, all through these years, have worked as an inspiration for the athletes to hone their talent and build a future in sports.&nbsp;
When I had won the first medal for the World Championship, my fellow athlete who had also won a medal had got a call from the head of her country which was being projected on the stadium screens. And I was wondering when I would get a similar opportunity. In that sense, today’s young athletes are really lucky that the Prime Minister is talking about them at such an important platform like ‘Mann ki Baat’. He also knows their personal interests well and is giving them grand send overs and felicitating them when they come back. The Prime Minister has repeatedly stressed on the fact that sports does not stop short at winning medals and putting India on the global map. What it primarily brings to the table is development of individual personalities by making us physically fit, mentally alert, and nurturing sportsmanship. Sports, as a whole, holds much importance for the development of a nation. Gone are the days when people used to follow only cricket. Today, there is a huge national pride attached to India’s participation in every international sporting event. Be it badminton, javelin throw, handball, or fencing, and even indigenous sports like Mallakhamb and Kalaripayattu, people today are united in their appreciation for the sportspersons who are waiving the tricolour high all around the world. &nbsp;
Just before the Olympics 2020, the Prime Minister urged the listeners of ‘Mann ki Baat’ to support the Tokyo-bound athletes with #Cheer4India, which subsequently transformed into a campaign, witnessing participation from school students to celebrities who sent their wishes for the athletes. It is interesting to see the different ways that we are finding as a country to celebrate our sportspersons. This momentum on the sports front is unprecedented for India and I am grateful to the Prime Minister for injecting a renewed vigour into sports. &nbsp;
The results are there for all to see. With seven medals in the Tokyo Olympics and 19 in the Paralympics, India performed its best in four decades. India recorded one of its best performances at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a total of 61 medals including 22 Gold medals. For the first time in the history of the prestigious international Thomas Cup (Badminton) tournament, the Indian men’s team won the championship by defeating 14 times World Champion Indonesia. The Indian contingent for Deaflympics Brazil gave the best-ever performance for the country with 16 medals. New young talent is performing tremendously well and the entire nation is enjoying their victories. &nbsp;
‘Mann ki Baat’ as a platform has inspired among the citizens, especially the youth, a collective enthusiasm towards sports in the country. Suzhou (China): Hosts China stormed into the semifinals of badminton's Sudirman Cup after sweeping away Indonesia 3-0 here on Friday.
Malaysia stunned Denmark 3-1 and South Korea defeated Chinese Taipei in other quarterfinal matches on Friday.
China, who have won 12 of the past 17 editions and have never missed the semifinals, will next take on Japan, who edged Thailand 3-2 earlier on Friday.
Mixed doubles pair Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong suffered a scare before rallying past Rinov Rivaldy and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in the opening tie.
The Indonesian duo took the first set 21-13, but Zheng and Huang recovered to clinch the second 23-21. The Chinese pair kept their momentum to win the decider 21-11, reports Xinhua.
"Neither of us felt very nervous, but maybe because of that, we didn't notice that our bodies were too relaxed to play," Huang commented on the thriller.
"We haven't played the mixed team competition for a long time, so I was a little overwhelmed when I came on court," said Zheng.
"When we were 19-14 down in the second set, I suddenly felt like there were clear chants and cheers behind us. Then we believed we had something to lean on."
Shi Yuqi also came back from 18-12 down in the first set to win his men's singles tie 22-20, 21-14 against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, before Olympic women's singles champion Chen Yufei secured the holders' semifinal berth by beating Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in straight sets.
"There are endless possibilities in the mixed team competition," Shi said of his comeback win. "In a team competition, you must have faith to win."
Men's singles world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen retired from his match against Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia due to a left hamstring injury as Denmark were eliminated 3-1.

Jakarta: India's two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu crashed out of the Indonesia Open badminton tournament, losing to third seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in a women's singles Round of 16 encounter. Former World Champion Sindhu, who won a silver medal in the Rio Olympics in 2016 and a bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, went down 18-21, 16-21 in the 29-minute encounter. Earlier, in what was a repeat of the 2021 World Championship semifinal, India's Kidambi Srikanth defeated compatriot Lakshya Sen in straight games to reach the men's singles quarterfinals here on Thursday. Srikanth, who had defeated Lakshya in that match to reach the final of the 2021 World Championship in Huelva, Spain, losing to Singapore's Loh Kean Yew, emerged 21-17, 22-20 winner to qualify for the last-eight stage of this BWF World Tour Super 1000 event which has a total prize fund of USD 1,250,000. Playing at Istora in the Indonesia capital, Sindhu conceded an early lead as Tai Tzu Ying surged ahead 4-0. Sindhu brought down the gap to 9-5 a few minutes later but the Chinese Taipei star, a former World No.1 just like Sindhu, extended the lead to 13-5.
