Wilson (Hon'ble Member of Rajya Sabha),&nbsp;Shri Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar (Hon'ble Member of Rajya Sabha), Shri Pradeep Kumar Chaudhary (Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha),&nbsp;Shri Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju (Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha),&nbsp;Shri Suresh Kumar Pujari (Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha), Shri Upendra Singh Rawat (Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha) and Shrimati Sandhya Ray (Hon'ble Member of Lok Sabha), besides four officers of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.&nbsp;The Committee held a meeting in Forest Research Institute (FRI) where heads of six organisations viz. Punjab National Bank, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Forest Survey of India and Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education presented the reports of their respective organizations. This was followed by detailed discussion.&nbsp;After the conclusion of the meeting, the Honourable Members visited museums of FRI. The Honourable Members took keen interest in the museums and appreciated the rich collection of specimens preserved in them.&nbsp;

It was biting cold in England. Most of the visas of our crew were rejected because the UK High Commission had become extremely strict."Incidentally, he met with new people who came to his help with regards to his hair and make up, "My personal team wasn't there but I was lucky to find someone wonderful to come and do my makeup and hair there when I didn't have my A team from here (India). My director didn't have his assistant director. So, all of us doubled up to play different parts on the show and not just actors.""The most challenging part was when Omicron broke out in England much before it did in India and most of us on set contracted it and we had to push our shoot because of that. I had to return to India and my other show's shoot in India also suffered. So that was a hard phase. An estimated use of more than 1 lakh plastic bottles, 15000 plastic tags and 50 thousand plastic cutleries was avoided during the eventsleading to an estimated reduction of 119437.5 kgof carbon dioxide equivalent (Co2e).Furthermore, countries, organisations and entities across the world are coming together to curb evils such as single use plastic. While speaking at the 14thsession of the Conference of Parties (CoP-14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned, "Single-use plastic is not only harmful to the health of the people, but it is also a major reason for the deterioration of the health of the land."With the recently concluded events of the Ministry of Ayush in Gujrat highlighted the intent of the Government to lead with example in this direction.The Prime Minister laid the foundation of the world’s first WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) during the ground-breaking ceremonyheld at Jamnagar on 19th April and inaugurated the 3-day Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit (GAIIS) on 20th April in the presence of Prime Minister of Mauritius Sh. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and DirectorGeneral of the World Health Organisation Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The mega eventsechoed the resolve of the country to curb single use plastic with dedicated efforts to minimize carbon footprints.Both the events were of global prominence that captured the attention of global community of policymakers, healthcare professionals, investors and stakeholders and were thronged by thousands.The unique eco-friendly practices adopted in organising these two events also garnered praise from diverse communities of stakeholders. Moreover, GAIIS event featured discussions and exhibitions during the summit and demonstrated environmental consciousness in action by adopting a wide range of measures in organisation of the event. Considering single use plastic including plastic water bottles, plates, cups, neck badges etc. being the key pollutant, reusable cutlery, glass bottles paper tags, paper cups etc. were used during the event.The eco-friendly practices were adopted to organize the events in line with the thought of the Prime Minister and in order to promote healthy and environment friendly practices, the participants were provided with kits that included copper bottles for drinking water. Water dispensers were installed at convenient locations to complement these efforts. While talking about the arrangements, the organizers mentioned, “Environmental consciousness remained the core of decision making for organisation of the event such as avoiding the use of plastic flex banners and other such material with an objective to minimize carbon footprints.”The visitors attending various sessions at the event also complemented the organizers for their efforts and eco-friendly measures. During the event, participating experts and speakers also expressed the potential of Ayush to achieve sustainability and net-zero.The event also featured creative exhibitions on environment related issues and solutions. Interestingly, the exhibit on 'Smart &amp; Sustainable Ayush Factories for the Future’, showcased steps toward efficient waste disposal for a clean, green, and sustainable future and also demonstrated the way to live without plastic which is commonly taken as unavoidable and most convenient. Talking about the exhibition and environmental initiatives, Mr. Anand Chordia, Founder, The Eco Factory Foundation, mentioned, “The exhibition is an effort to showcase various aspects of the problems and solutions related with environment including, different waste auditing and segregation processes and their effective management, grey water management and possible recycling, use of renewable source of energy, converting barren empty lands to biodiversity parks to retain or regain native flora and fauna, concept of green building, with an aim to achieve Net Zero by applying simple and replicable methods.”Further, Dr. Pratik Mehta, an Environmentalist, mentioned that the Microplastic evil was recently reported in 80% of the human blood samples tested, he also insisted on adopting an approach of living and sustaining without plastic as much possible.The organizers of the event were ecstatic while sharing the outcome of their eco-friendly efforts in the form of numbers. It was mentioned that considering the scale of the two events, it is estimatedthat use of more than 1 lakh plastic bottles, 15000plastic tags and 50 thousand plastic cutleries were avoided during the event. Furthermore, it was estimated that if the carbon emission scenario is taken into account, it turns out that the three-day event succeeded in reducing the Co2e emission to the tunes of estimated 119437.5 kg considering footfall of 27000 in both the events combined.

As manufacturing industries move toward advanced technologies, there is a requirement to minimise energy consumption and automate the welding process to avoid human-induced errors and also manufacture products swiftly in an eco-friendly manner.Dr. S. Arungalai Vendan, Professor, Electronics, and Communication, School of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar University, Bangalore developed the Internet of Things (IoT) integrated machine titled “Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt Welding Equipment" embedded with sensors for sound, vibration, arc light intensity, temperature as well as smoke, along with processors for abstracting data for predicting the quality of the welding.&nbsp;The low-cost IoT integrated machine was supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Dr. Vendan who obtained his Ph.D. in MIAB welding explored the process at Welding Research Institute, Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited, Tiruchirappalli, India for pressure part applications. Observing the huge potential of adopting the process for various industrial applications to join ferrous tubes, the investigator came up with the idea of developing a low-cost IoT integrated MIAB machine for joining ferrous tubes.&nbsp;Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt (MIAB) welding involves striking of an arc between two coaxially placed tubes, followed by interaction of the axial component of arc current and radial component of a magnetic field that causes a force called Lorentz force. This force acts on the arc and impels it around the joint line with an approximate linear speed of 200m/s that uniformly heats the tube surfaces upto the highest temperature at which it is solid (solidus temperature). The softened tube edges (butt ends) are then forced into penetration by forging to form a weld.The equipment developed is customized for welding mild steel/ low carbon steel tubes for 3 outer diameters -- 21.5mm, 22.5mm and 27 mm respectively with 2-3 mm thicknesses which are typically employed in automotive and structural applications. The scientists are in the process of establishing new equations for two dependent parameters-- arc velocity and arc rotational sound, based on which an approximate prediction can be made about the welding.

Bijnor: The police have arrested two boys for the gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl who consumed poison along with her male friend.The girl and the boy were taken to a district hospital, where the boy died on Sunday and the girl is still critical.The father of the girl has lodged a complaint against the boys since he had seen them together on Saturday night.Bijnor Superintendent of Police (SP) Dharamveer Singh, said on Monday, "An investigation in the case is still on and we have arrested two other boys named by the girl's father in his complaint. A case has been registered against three persons, including the girl's friend, under Sections 376D and 328 of the IPC, as well as under Section 5/6 of the POCSO Act."The girl and the accused were neighbours and belonged to the same community. The father of the girl alleged that his daughter was caught by the three accused and was gang-raped, which is why she consumed poison.Bijnor SP said, "Prima facie it seems that the boy had a love affair with the girl for the past few months. They were spotted together on Saturday night. The girl's father approached the police after the two consumed poison."The family of the accused, meanwhile, said, "The two were in a relationship. The girl had called the boy to her house but when they were caught by her father, they consumed poison." The police said all the accused are minors. —IANS

The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr.Renu Singh, IFS, Director, FRI.&nbsp;Dr.Renu Singh interacted with the scientists and appreciated the research being carried out by various divisions of the Institute. She instructed the scientists and officers to continue their efforts towards disseminating their research findings to the user groups including the general public so that the nation can benefit from the research activities being carried out in the institute.&nbsp;The main attractions of this exhibition&nbsp;were varieties of medicinal plants with their utility from NWFP discipline, Natural dyes, pine needle fibre, composting process, agarbatti and doop batti making and colours from chemistry division, treatment of green bamboos to increase their life and&nbsp;attacked exhibits&nbsp;by different insect- pests like bamboo borer, bamboo ghun and their control by Entomology division. Extension division displayed Populus deltoides and Melia dubia based agroforestry models and Bhimal Fibre Extraction technology. Genetics &amp;Tree Propagation Div. displayed important tree species like Dalbergia Sissoo, Melia dubia, Azadirachta Indica, Salvadora, Bamboo and Ringal etc. Forest Protection Division displayed Eco friendly technologies developed in form of posters and exhibits. The bio-fertilizers developed for different forest tree species growing in various environmental conditions involving mycorrhiza and bacteria were also displayed. Wood Anatomy Discipline shared the information about the need of timber identification by displaying posters on procedure of wood identification process. Seeds of forest trees were displayed by Silviculture division of the Institute.All the museums of the Institute were open free of any fee on this day and were visited by large crowd of people throughout the day.

Khandwa:&nbsp;Two friends drowned while swimming in the Narmada river backwaters in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district, police said on Monday.On Sunday evening, they went with their families to Sant Singaji Samadhi Sthal, which is located in the river backwaters and is secured by walls on all sides, they said.The two friends Abhishek Kushwaha (23) and Vikas Phoolmali (25) decided to swim and ventured into the deep waters where they got trapped and drowned, Beed police post in-charge Ramprasad Yadav said. Their family members raised an alarm following which police rushed to the spot, located some 40 km from the district headquarters. The relatives with the police's help later traced the duo and pulled them out, he said. The two were taken to a hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. The bodies were handed over to the relatives after the postmortem, he said. A case was registered in connection with the incident, he added.—PTI

Kochi: The crime branch of the Kerala Police on Monday arrested Sarath G Nair, a hotel owner and friend of actor Dileep, an accused in the sexual assault case of an actress.Police sources said Nair was arrested for destroying evidence related to the assault case. The probe team, based on a statement given to them by movie director Balachandrakumar, suspect that Nair was the VIP who had allegedly visited the house of Dileep after he got bail in the case. The crime branch had on January 9 registered the case on a complaint filed by an investigating officer based on a purported audio clip of Dileep, which was released by a TV channel in which the actor was allegedly heard conspiring to attack the official. Dileep has claimed that this apprehension was borne out of the past conduct of the complainant officer who has been trying to falsely implicate him in the sexual assault case. The actress who has worked in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films was allegedly abducted and molested in her car for two hours by some of the accused, who had forced their way into the vehicle on the night of February 17, 2017 and later escaped in a busy area. The entire act was filmed by some of the accused to blackmail the actress. There are 10 accused in the case and initially police arrested seven people. Dileep was arrested subsequently and released on bail later. The actor and five others, including Nair, were booked under various provisions of the IPC, including Sections 116 (abetment), 118 (concealing design to commit offence), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (criminal act done by several people).—PTI

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the civil court in Varanasi to not proceed with hearing the Gyanvapi case till it takes up the matter on Friday. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant and PS Narashima was informed by advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain that lead counsel Hari Shankar Jain for the&nbsp;Hindu devotees in the civil suit in the case is indisposed. Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain urged the court to take up the matter for hearing on Friday. Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, said several applications have been filed across the country to "seal" various mosques and in the Gyanvapi case in Varanasi the hearing is going on and an application has been filed to "demolish" a wall around the&nbsp;wazukhana&nbsp;(ablution room).Ahmadi said he cannot oppose adjournment on the grounds of health of a counsel but an undertaking should be given that Hindu devotees will not proceed with the civil court proceedings.Advocate Vishnu said they are assuring the bench that the Hindu parties would not proceed with the hearing before the civil court at Varanasi. The bench recorded the submission and passed the order asking the civil court to not proceed with the hearing in the case till Friday, when it will hear the matter.&nbsp; On May 17, the top court had directed the district magistrate of Varanasi to ensure protection of an area inside the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri complex where a 'Shivling' is said to have been found during a survey and allowed Muslims to offer&nbsp;namaaz&nbsp;and perform ”religious observances”.—PTI

Kathmandu: &nbsp;Nepal has reported its first cases of African swine fever in pigs, according to the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health. The fever has so far killed 934 pigs in six municipalities in the capital city of Nepal, The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported. Nepal has 1,426 susceptible and 1,364 active cases of the African swine fever as of Thursday evening, said the animal organisation that has a mandate to improve animal health and welfare throughout the world.Nepal is yet to declare the first outbreak, the Nepali newspaper said. “Yes, the outbreak has been confirmed in Nepal,” said Dr Chandra Dhakal, information officer at the Department of Livestock Services under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, as quoted by The Post. “We will hold a press meet on Friday to provide details.” Pigs are a primary source of household income in many countries. The spread of ASF across the world has devastated family-run pig farms, often the mainstay of people’s livelihoods and a driver of upward mobility.ASF continues to spread worldwide, threatening pig health and welfare. The disease has reached multiple countries across Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Pacific, affecting both domestic and wild pigs.Globally, since 2005, ASF has been reported in a total of 73 countries.—ANI

Programme was chaired by Director FRI Dr Renu Singh, IFS and Sh. Ashok Kumar Agarwal, President IIA and attended by seven member delegation of IIA and ten member delegation of Wood Technologist Association (WTA), Yamuna Nagar led by Sri. Subhash Jolly, Sh. Rajeev Agrawal, Plywood manufacturer from Yamuna Nagar, Sh. Suresh Baheti, chief editor, Ply Insight magazine, media and scientists and officials of FRI. The program mainly emphasized on the issues and problems being faced by the wood industries and farmers and how research activities and expertise of FRI can help in achieving timber production and utilization goals of industry. Dr Renu Singh, IFS and Director of FRI in her opening remarks underlined that industry-farmers-researchers are the three important pillars in growth of wood based industry. She also emphasized on developing a roadmap so that issues can be addressed and solved efficiently by each pillars. She further added that limited funding and lack of experimental areas are main bottleneck of progress in forestry research and industries can help in mitigating both. Sh. Ashok Kumar Agarwal, President IIA, appreciated that the research work of FRI is helping both industries and farmers. He wished to collaborate with scientists and start a help centers through Indian Industries Association that could disseminate the knowledge and address different issues of industries and farmers. This help centre could act as a link between wood and wood based industries, growers as well as researchers. Wood industrialists; Sh. Anuj Garg, Chairman IIA Muzaffarnagar and Sh. Pramod Sadana, Chairman IIA Saharanpur requested help of FRI in small timber product and handicraft industries which has export market of 100 billion&nbsp;rupees. FRI scientists Dr. Ashok Kumar, Dr. Ajay Thakur and Dr. Dinesh kumar showed the highly productive new varieties of Melia, Corymbia and poplars to the delegates. Sh. Subhash Jolly emphasized on policy interventions and advised the industry to reap maximum benefits from expertise available at FRI. The importance of sustainable supply and usage of wood was stressed both industry delegates and researcher present during the program. In afternoon session delegates were shown timber seasoning, preservation and composite production facilities at Forest Products Division and experimental areas and nursery of high yielding genetically improved plants of different trees at Genetics &amp; Tree Improvement Divisions of FRI. Dehradun (The Hawk): International Day for Biodiversity with the theme of Building a Shared Future for All Life, was celebrated in Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. On this occasion, the Extension Division of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun organized programme on Bird Watching and Botanization in the institute’s campus. The participants assembled in the Botanical Garden the institute and welcomed by Ms. Richa Misra, IFS, Head, Extension Division and her team. Thereafter, participants were divided into two groups respectively for Birds watching and Botanization. The Bird watching group was lead by Dr. Arun Pratap Singh, Scientist-F of Entomology Division and the Botanization group lead by Dr. Anup Chandra, Scientist-F of Forest Botany Division and both the groups proceeded for biodiversity watching inside the campus. Subsequently, both the groupsreassembled in the botanical garden where they were addressed by Dr. Renu Singh, IFS Director Forest Research Institute. She addressed the participants and spoke on the importance of the biodiversity and its conservation. She also stressed on the need of awareness for conservation of biodiversity. She stated that biodiversity conservation in intrinsicallyassociated with survival of mankind. It is also everybody’s moral duty to protect and conserve biodiversity. This has been proven to be true specially in COVID time. A competition quiz was also arranged for all participants where questions related to biodiversity were asked to the participants. All the participants participated very untheatrically in the quiz competition. The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Charan Singh, Scientist-F, Extension Division of the institute. The other members of the team including Shri Rambir Sigh, Scientist-E, Shri Vijay Kumar, ACF, Shri Pritpal Singh, Range Officer of Extension Division and team of Electric Section of Engineering &amp;amp; Services Division, team of Forest Botany Division, Public Liaison Office and others did a commendable work to make the programme successful.

Beijing: With China expecting a surge in demand for Chinese arms and ammunition from several countries including Middle-Eastern and African countries as the Russia-Ukraine war has entered into fourth month, a study indicates a fall in Chinese defence contracts due to lack in transparency and less sophisticated parts vis-a-vis Western technologies in manufacturing weapons. A RAND Corporation (US-based thinktank) study in 2021 clearly pointed to a lacuna in Chinese defence contracts, stating there is a lack of transparency and accountability.According to the experts, a lot of countries have little or no faith in Chinese companies because of poor after-sales support and equipment that rapidly declines into non-functional machinery. China also does not have the required ability to manufacture highly sophisticated parts as it is still not considered a first-rate developer and producer of state-of-the-art military material, reported the Russian Council. Meanwhile, Bejing's assertive policy in terms of arms sales and presence around the world should raise some cautionary eyebrows. China is not only increasing its arms sales, but also military training and investment in Africa's infrastructure projects, which are giving Beijing a foothold on the continent.Moreover, a new analysis by Jane's, a company known for its publications on global weapons, a sharp increase is witnessed over the past two decades in Chinese military equipment sales to Africa, compared with the continent's traditional benefactor, Russia.Pakistan, Bangladesh and Thailand are other China's clients for arms and ammunition. China has also sold 36 J-10C fighters to Pakistan and delivered HQ-22 (FK-3) surface-to-air missiles (SAM) to Serbia.Countries like Tanzania, Nigeria, Sudan, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Gabon, Algeria, Namibia, Ghana and Ethiopia are among the top importers of Chinese arms. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)'s recent report, nearly half of Chinese weapon exports -- 47 per cent, in fact -- went to its closest ally Pakistan, while Beijing's next largest clients were Bangladesh and Thailand at 16 pc and 5 pc respectively, as per the media portal.Given the relative strength of China's position on the arms export table, it is perhaps surprising that China also appeared fifth on the international list of arms importers, behind India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Australia.—ANI
