It also called for stricter vigilance by broadcasters and journalist bodies, noting that the recent incident of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rediff.com/news/report/bombs-hurled-firing-in-kanpur-as-groups-clash-over-bjp-leaders-remark/20220603.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(71, 123, 196);">violence in Kanpur</a>&nbsp;that caused “unnecessary embarrassment” to the country could have been avoided if those news channels had been mindful of the nation's constitutional commitment to secularism, as well as journalistic ethics and guidelines of the Press Council of India. Violence had erupted in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers as members of two communities indulged in brick-batting and hurled bombs over attempts to shut shops in protest against remarks against Prophet Mohammad by Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a TV debate.“The Editors Guild of India is disturbed by the irresponsible conduct of some national news channels for deliberately creating circumstances that target vulnerable communities by spewing hatred towards them and their beliefs,” the Editors' body said in a statement.Expectedly, there was a riot in Kanpur accompanied by an “unprecedented trenchant reaction” from many countries that were offended by the remarks of the ruling party spokespersons, it said, adding that in their angry statements they wondered about India's commitment to human rights and freedom of religion. “The incident that caused unnecessary embarrassment to the country could have been avoided if some of the TV outlets had been mindful of the nation's constitutional commitment to secularism, as well as the journalistic ethics and guidelines that the Press Council of India has issued to handle a volatile communal situation,” the EGI said.Instead, some of these channels prompted by the desire to increase viewership and profit were seemingly inspired by the values of Radio Rwanda whose incendiary broadcast caused a genocide in the African nation, it added.“The EGI demands that these channels pause and take a critical look at what they have done by giving legitimacy to divisive and toxic voices that has made the national discourse coarse and the gap between communities unbridgeable,” the Editors' body said.“The EGI also demands stricter vigilance by broadcaster and journalist bodies to prevent a recurrence of this from taking place,” it added.The media is in place to strengthen the Constitution and the law, and not break it through sheer irresponsibility and absence of accountability, the EGI said.—PTI

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh will begin teaching medical and engineering courses in Hindi as well, Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath has said.
Yogi tweeted, "Some books of medical and engineering courses have been translated into Hindi. The students will be able to study those subjects in Hindi from the coming year."
The announcement has been made days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched India's first Hindi version of MBBS textbook in Bhopal on Sunday (October 16). While addressing the event in Bhopal on Sunday, the Home Minister said, "Today is a very important day for the education sector of India. Whenever history will be written in the coming days, this day will be written in golden letters"
"Through the New Education Policy, PM Modi has given more emphasis to the mother tongue of students. This is a historic decision. Now under Modi ji you can avail higher education in any language as per your comfort," Shah said.
Madhya Pradesh is the country's first state to start the MBBS course in the Hindi language. Initially, three subjects have been selected to be studied in Hindi which includes Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry.
A team of 97 experts have been working on the preparation of books for the last 232 days at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. They have been translating the books from English to Hindi.
Madhya Pradesh Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang on Sunday said that the move will bring a big change in the advancement of education in Hindi medium.
The experts further said the new edition of Medical Biochemistry contains the application of some new chapters which include Sodium, Potassium, Water Homeostasis, Biochemistry Techniques, Radiation, Radioisotopes and Environmental Pollutants and Toxins.
Besides, several new line diagrams, tables and text boxes have been added to make information more memorable.
Similarly in the Anatomy edition, new chapters of surface anatomy have been added in both the abdomen and lower limb sections. New line diagrams, CT and MRI diagram tables and flow charts are added to increase the retention of knowledge. —ANI

New Delhi (The Hawk): Two free courses for people with disabilities have been announced as part of the 53rd International Film Festival of India, which will be held from November 20 to 28 in Goa, by the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, in conjunction with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG).
At IFFI 53, there are introductory courses in screen acting for individuals in wheelchairs and smartphone filmmaking for people with autism.
In order to enable people with disabilities to participate in and flourish in the magic of cinema, FTII has been offering a variety of courses with the goal of ensuring that the creation of art is accessible to everyone.
The 8-day IFFI 53 courses are scheduled to run from November 21 to November 28. The goal of one course is to turn students into contemporary auteurs, while the goal of the other is to let participants' inner actors loose.
According to officials, Ajmal Jami, a renowned expert in the field of visual communication, will instruct the fundamental course in smartphone filmmaking for people with autism. He has won numerous accolades in a variety of genres, including documentaries, commercial films, soft features, and shows. He has also reported from war and conflict zones. He has worked on major projects for organisations of national and international distinction as a cinematographer, filmmaker, and photographer.
The training will be broken up into a number of sections, starting with an introduction to the cinematic language and ending with smartphone shooting and editing. At the end of the module, there will be a screening and review session.

Prayagraj (UP): The Allahabad High Court, hearing an appeal by a man against the dismissal of his divorce petition by a family court, on Thursday observed that denying sex to a spouse for a long time without sufficient reason amounts to mental cruelty.

The high court said that it was evident from the record that, since long, the parties to the marriage had been living separately, and the wife had denied discharging the obligation of marital liability.

The couple had got married in 1979. After seven years, the wife's 'gauna' ceremony was performed and they started living as a couple.

According to the petitioner, his wife refused to fulfil her obligation of marital life and then she left for her parents' home.

The husband claimed that he made several attempts to convince her but the woman did not establish any physical relationship with him. The man was serving in the police department and had to reside at the place of his posting.

In July 1994, the couple got mutually separated before a panchayat after the man paid alimony of Rs 22,000 to his wife. She later married another man.

Then the husband approached a court seeking divorce on grounds of mental cruelty and desertion. However, the trial court refused to grant divorce on the grounds of cruelty.

Feeling aggrieved, he filed an appeal before the Allahabad High Court against the order of the family court which dismissed his divorce plea.

A bench of Justice Suneet Kumar and Justice Rajendra Kumar-IV, while granting the husband a decree of divorce, on Thursday said: "Undoubtedly, not allowing a spouse for a long time to have sexual intercourse with his or her partner, without sufficient reason, itself amounts to mental cruelty. Since there is no acceptable view in which a spouse can be compelled to resume life with the consort, nothing is given by trying to keep the parties tied forever to a marriage."

Terming the approach taken by the family court "hyper-technical", the bench said: "It is evident from the record that since long, the parties to the marriage have been living separately, according to plaintiff-appellant, defendant-respondent had no respect for marital bond, denied discharging obligation of marital liability. There has been a complete breakdown of their marriage." IANS

Let Dreams Fly With Multi-technical Education

New Delhi: The Delhi University conducted spot admission round of undergraduate courses for the academic session 2023-24 for about 5,000 seats lying vacant and seat allocations will be declared on Friday at 5 p.m.  According to the university administration, the selected candidates will be required to accept the allocated seats by September 3.   Students getting admission in Delhi University on the basis of the spot round will also have to pay the fees by September 5.  More than 65,900 of the total 71,000 undergraduate seats at Delhi University have been filled with the conclusion of the third round of seat allocation.   At least 65,937 overall admissions have taken place so far at DU, the officials associated with the admission department said.  Delhi University had last week announced the spot round to fill up the last of its remaining seats in undergraduate courses.   The application window for the spot admission round was open from the evening of August 29 to August 30.  Admissions to Delhi University's undergraduate programmes were provided through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS). Applicants who had applied for CSAS (UG)-2023 but had not been allotted seats in any college until the announcement of the spot admission round can now participate in this process.  The university has clarified that candidates will not be allowed to withdraw their admissions in spot admission round-I. To be considered in the spot admission round, candidates must choose the option for the spot round through their dashboard.  The university said that accepting the allotted seat in the spot admission round is mandatory. Failure to accept the seat during the spot admission round will result in the candidate's eligibility for admission being terminated in the Undergraduate Admission Portal (UOD).  During the spot admission round, there will be no options for 'upgrade' or 'withdraw.'  The Registrar of Delhi University stated that the seats allocated during the spot admission round will be final. Candidates who opt for an upgrade in any specific additional quota will be considered only for an upgrade in that particular additional quota.

Varanasi (UP): Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is all set to start a postgraduate specialised course in 'Kashi Studies' from the next academic session.  The course will include the ancient city's history, festivals, fairs, culture, religious significance, way of living, ghats, temples, political and social journey and Kashi's importance in India's freedom struggle.
Prof Kaushal Kishore Mishra, former dean of the faculty of social sciences, said, “In its recently held meeting, the Academic Council of BHU passed six new courses, including one on 'Kashi Studies'. These are self-finance courses of the department of history.”  He further said, “It is the inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's love for Varanasi that has taken the shape of a PG course in BHU.”
Mishra has played an important role in framing the courses.  The other new courses approved by the academic council include Malviya Studies, Diaspora and Global Studies, History of Science and Science Policy, Asian Studies, and Archival Studies and Management.  "We have prepared a full course on Kashi Studies under the history department. Under the course, students will study everything about Kashi in detail. People particularly in foreign countries want to know about Kashi due to its increasing importance at the global level and its transformation and development as a hub of religious tourism,” said Prof Mishra.  He added that the students opting for the course will have history as their subject and ‘Kashi Studies’ as a specialisation course.

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Opposition over DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's rant against 'Sanatana', saying when Ravan (the demon king in the epic Ramayana) could not destroy Sanatan Dharma with all his arrogance, how can "political parasites" do so? Addressing the public at an event organised to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami at Lucknow on Thursday, CM Adityanath said, "At a time when the country is progressing in the right direction, with renewed energy and zeal, while respecting our heritage, some people cannot stomach it. They don't like India's rising global prestige and position. In the Amrit Kaal, India is marking rapid strides, scripting new achievements every day. To weaken and stall the country's march to progress, some people have resorted to pointing fingers at our Sanatan Dharma." He said Sanatan, which survived the arrogance of Ravan as well as that of Mughal emperors Babar and Aurangzeb, will not be harmed by those openly calling for it to be eradicated. “Attempts are being made to point fingers at our Sanatan culture. Attempts are being made to insult our heritage. But they forgot that Sanatan, which even Ravan couldn't destroy with all his arrogance, and which came out unscathed even in the face of atrocities by Babar and Aurangzeb, can never be eradicated. How can these political parasites eradicate Sanatana? They should be ashamed,” Adityanath raged. “At a time when our country is hosting world leaders at the G20 summit in the spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is a family), it is unfortunate that some self-seeking people are calling for an intrinsic part of our heritage to be eradicated," he added. Earlier, on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chairing a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers, weighed in on the controversy around the DMK leader's remarks and asked for the attack on Sanatan Dharma to be countered aggressively. Udhayanidhi's statement drew saffron fury, with BJP leaders and seers demanding that he take back his words and tender an apology. The BJP also linked the DMK leader's rant to the Opposition bloc INDIA, saying his words merely betrayed the anti-majoritarian mindset of the alliance. The DMK and the Congress are partners in the ruling alliance in Tamil Nadu and also part of the 28-party Opposition bloc. —ANI

Mayawati said there is apprehension among people that both the ruling party and the opposition are hand-in-glove on the issue. She urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance and ban organisations, parties and alliances that are named after the country. Recalling the role of BR Ambedkar in drafting the Constitution, she said it was unjustified to change or tweak the country's statute book and play with the sentiments of the people. “Our party believes this isn't justified and is totally wrong," the BSP chief said. —ANI

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Congress on Tuesday hit out at Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for his allegations against INDIA bloc over Sanatana Dharma, and said that "childish BJP leader should read proper books to understand Hindu Dharma".
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday, while addressing a meeting in Madhya Pradesh, had said that "rulers like Mughals and British couldn't wipe out the Sanatana Dharma from the country in the past. But Congress (INDIA bloc) is trying to insult Sanatana Dharma to garner votes. Hence people should question them".
"Childish and Immature Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should read proper books to understand Hindu Dharma. Self-Proclaimed Political Pandits of RSS will never teach him true Hindu Dharma," Congress Media Cell Chairman Amarnath Panjikar said, hitting out at Sawant.
While rejecting his allegations against the INDIA front, Panjikar said that no matter how hard BJP tries, finally "Judega Bharat Jeetega India". Panjikar said that Hindu Dharma is not a property of one particular political party or Leader. "Hindu is a Sanatana Dharma which is followed by all across political affiliations and party lines. We too follow rituals and perform puja in our day to day life. We too respect spiritualism and it is not the private property of BJP. Sawant should understand this before making loose statements," Panjikar said. "Person holding Constitutional positions should speak with responsibility. INDIA is an alliance, it is not a political party.
Majority of the leaders of INDIA Alliance are Hindus and they all have contributed in protecting, preserving and respecting Hindu Dharma," he claimed. "Ganesh Chaturthi - which is the biggest festival of Hindus in Goa - is just a week away. Many poor and needy Goans are awaiting release of financial assistance from the government before the festival.

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Harnath Singh Yadav on Sunday condemned the use of unparliamentary words used by party colleague Ramesh Bidhuri but also said that using words like 'Neech' (meaning despicable) by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Danish Ali for Prime Minister Narendra Modi is wrong as well.  "I do not support at all what was said by MP Ramesh Bidhuri during the House proceedings in the Lok Sabha, but I also do not support the usage of the word 'neech' in reference to the Prime Minister. This was done by Danish Ali. Perhaps in response to this, Ramesh Bidhuri's objectionable statement came," the Rajya Sabha MP said in a letter written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday.
Yadav said that he was enraged by the fact that the derogatory word, 'Neech' was used for the Prime Minister in the Parliament and requested the Speaker to hold a thorough investigation into the incident. "I am angry by the fact that the word 'neech' was used in the Parliament for our respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi...I humbly request you to hold a thorough investigation into the matter so that the truth comes out," he wrote. The BJP MP also requested the speaker to ensure that MPs holding constitutional posts respect the Prime Minister in the House.
"It is my humble request to you that just as the entire world and the people of the country respect and honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he should also be respected by MPs holding constitutional posts," he said. Condemning the leaders of INDIA bloc who came out in full support of Danish Ali, Yadav said, "It is surprising that people sitting in the opposition give political colour to every issue." He said that no opposition leader took note of the Danish Ali's "uncivilized conduct" in the house and even reached Ali's residence to spread hatred.  Taking a veiled dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his 'Mohabbat ki Dukaan' (shop of love) remark, Yadav said, "All limits were broken when the love shop owners and those who speak ill of the country in foreign lands reached Danish Ali's residence to light the fire of hatred." Harnath Singh Yadav said that it has become a common practice to speak ill of the Prime Minister whether inside or outside the House. "Parliament is the sacred temple of democracy. The Constitution is the soul of democracy and MPs are the protectors of democracy. We can protect democracy only by protecting the dignity of the Parliament. We should ensure the protection of parliamentary values, traditions and dignity at all costs," the BJP leader added. Ramesh Bidhuri's objectionable remarks against Danish Ali in the Lok Sabha on Thursday have triggered anger among the Opposition parties, with their demand for strict action against Bidhuri. The BJP has issued a show cause notice to Bidhuri on the instruction of party president JP Nadda for his use of unparliamentary language against the BSP MP.&nbsp;

Kochi (Kerala): The Indian Coast Guard conducted a Maritime Law &amp; Operations Course for Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member states from 14 August to 08 September 2023 at the Coast Guard Training Centre Kochi. "A total of 09 international students from 09 countries (Bangladesh, Madagascar, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Oman, and Yemen) participated in this course," stated the Indian Coast Guard release.&nbsp;
"The course covered specialized subjects such as boarding operations, maritime law, pollution response, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, and search &amp; rescue. The officers were also given hands-on training in various maritime operations," added the release.&nbsp;
On successful completion of the course, the officers were awarded certificates by DIG Arvind Sharma, TM, Officer-in-Charge Coast Guard Training Centre Kochi. The Indian Coast Guard is committed to enhancing maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Maritime Law &amp; Operations Course is one of the many initiatives undertaken by the Indian Coast Guard to build capacity and strengthen cooperation with IORA member states. This course is a valuable opportunity for international officers to learn about the latest best practices in maritime law and operations from experienced Indian Coast Guard personnel.

Dehradun (The Hawk): One week training on 'Silviculture and Forestry' for the Personnel of Ecological Battalions of Territorial Army was organized by the Silviculture and Forest Management division of Forest Research Institute at Dehradun from 20th to 25th November 2023. This course is a joint venture of FRI, Dehradun and 127 Infantry Bn. Ecological (TA) Garhwal Rifles, Dehradun and training course is being attended by 41 personnel including Officers, JCOs and Jawans from 04 Eco Battalions of Territorial Army viz. 127 ETF,Garhwal (Dehradun), 130 ETF Kumaon (Pithoragarh), 132 ETF Bn (Delhi) and 137 CETF Bn (Prayagraj).  Mrs Richa Misra, Head Silviculture and Forest management division welcomed the gathering and said that during this course apart from lectures, visits to nursery, laboratories and experimental sites will also be conducted. She informed that the training will provide scientific inputs on silvicultural aspects like seed collection, quality evaluation, raising of quality planting stock and plantation establishment and disease/pest management, phytoremediation, etc. Dr. Renu Singh - Director FRI in her inaugural speech said that Eco battalions of Territorial Army were raised with specific mandate to undertake the afforestation activities in the degraded and difficult to access sites. They have been doing commendable work on afforestation of degraded, disturbed and difficult sites and in cleaning and rejuvenation of Ganga river and thus also contributing to enhancing the forest and tree cover of the country as envisaged in the National Forest Policy. Col. Rohit Srivastava Commanding Officer 127 ETF Garhwal briefed about the plantation projects being carried out by the unit. He advised the participants to make the most of the training programme and also have discussion with the faculty members on scientific aspects of nursery raising. Dr. Manisha Thapliyal, Course Coordinator told that equal emphasis was given to practical exposure in seed handling, nursery establishment &amp; management and plantation activities, propagation of bamboo and medicinal plants. The sessions will also be on soil fertility management in nursery and plantations, afforestation of difficult sites, restoration activities in mined-out areas and management of fungal and insect-pest diseases in nursery &amp; plantations, visits to seed processing unit, botanical garden, bambusetum, etc. The participants will also visit various museums of FRI, to gain knowledge on history of forestry/silviculture and other sciences. New Delhi: Students who have pursued physics, chemistry, biology or biotechnology along with English even as additional subject after passing class 12 from duly recognised boards will be eligible to appear in NEET-UG test. In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the National Medical Commission (NMC) said that this decision will be applicable even to those students whose applications were previously rejected.  The erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) through the provisions of the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997 including the various amendments, under Chapter-II had regulated the admission and selection to MBBS course.  It then had mentioned that candidates must have undergone two years of regular or continuous study of the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, in Class 11 and 12 with practical, along with English, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board of the NMC said in the public notice.
The two years study was required to be completed from regular schools and not from open schools or as private candidates.  Further, the study of Biology and Biotechnology or any other requisite subject, could not be completed as an additional subject after passing Class 12, the notice said.  The provisions had been challenged before the Delhi High Court and were quashed vide judgement dated May 11, 2018 in a case and other related matters.  This had a consequential bearing on the candidates seeking admission in graduate and primary medical courses in foreign medical institutes due to the statutory regulations in this regard i.e. the eligibility requirement for taking admission in an Undergraduate Medical Course in a Foreign Medical Institution Regulations, 2002 and the Screening Test Regulation, 2002.  In this background, candidates had been debarred from NEET-UG Test as also their applications seeking eligibility certificate were rejected.  Meanwhile, the NMC has framed the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 as notified on June 2.  Regulation 11(b) provides that candidates who have passed 10+2 or its equivalent with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology and English shall be eligible for appearing in NEET-UG.  "Therefore, after the framing of Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 the earlier Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997 including the various amendments stand repealed prospectively," the NMC notice said.  The NMC held detailed deliberations in a meeting held on June 14, 2023 and took into consideration the New Education Policy, which permits great extent of flexibility in the study of various subjects in Class 12.  And "decided that the previous approach of the erstwhile Medical Council of India needs to be revisited by permitting candidates to undertake study of the requisite subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology alongwith English) even as additional subjects after passing Class 12th from duly recognized boards by the concerned Government".  Such candidates shall be permitted to appear in NEET-UG Test and thus will be eligible for grant of eligibility certificate, the notice stated.  The present decision shall be applicable retrospectively also on candidates whose applications for grant of eligibility certificate have been rejected on the grounds contemplated in the present public notice. However, for the purpose of appearing in NEET-UG, candidates who become eligible after the date of the present public notice, shall be permitted to appear in NEET-UG-2024.  Further, court cases filed by MCI/ NMC, as before any court, in this regard shall be withdrawn and that the current position with the present public notice shall be explained in all pending litigations filed by candidates, against MCI or NMC, so that the same could be disposed at the earliest.

New Delhi: The statesman and philosopher, Dr Karan Singh, was in full flow at the India International Centre not to launch someone else’s book, as he's wont to do, but his very own.  'The Eternal Religion: Glimpses of Hinduism' (Speaking Tiger) is a collection of essays and experiences of Karan Singh that are made available conveniently, seven decades since the time when, as a 22-year-old, he wrote his first newspaper article that was published in installments by a national daily.  Karan Singh’s shorter popular pieces are available and easily accessible, but his elaborate compositions seemed difficult to lay hands on, until the publication of this book. Sharing his thoughts and interpretations at this particular point of time is also significant at a time when religion and politics are mixed to make a deadly cocktail.  Singh's endeavour has always been to rescue a faith that is as pluralistic and inclusive as Hinduism from distortion by politicians. Hinduism, he says, is an "eternal religion because of both its antiquity and inclusiveness."  He explained that Hinduism is a "multi-faceted, extraordinarily diverse" system that even gives its followers the freedom to worship without a physical representation of a god or goddess being around.  "It is a great tragedy that people rush through life without once looking inward. That is the essence of Hinduism -- looking inwards," Singh said.  "In my view, it is the only religion that allows for multiple paths to the divine,” he summed up, emphasising that "this choice that Hinduism offers is unique, so putting it in a single mould would be doing injustice to it."  Joining Karan Singh in the discussion centred around the book was the former diplomat and Rajya Sabha MP, and celebrated author, Pavan Varma. Pertinently, he brought up the recent inflammatory remarks of Udayanidhi Stalin, the DMK's youth wing leader and Tamil Nadu's Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, on Sanatan Dharma.  Singh said he was "shocked beyond belief" at the comment of "responsible ministers and MPs" (referring to Stalin) and added how appalled he was at the young leader's statement, especially given that Tamil Nadu is replete with significant temples and is home to a rich cultural legacy.  "It is very rare that I get angry, and this got me angry," Singh said, referring to Stalin's much-criticised remark that Sanatan Dharma is like "leprosy" and should be "eradicated".  He pointed to the possible consequences if such a remark were made against Islam. "Kya battamizi hai, sahab (it is most uncivilised),” he said.  Karan Singh agreed that “there are terrible things like untouchability” associated with Hinduism, likening it with ancient Greece, where the culture was based on slavery. He called it an “abomination”.  “An abiding disaster in Hinduism is untouchability. It is an insult and a disgrace to Vedanta and the Upanishads." Singh said.  He, however, pointed out that "you cannot speak against casteism -- it is not just legalised but also constitutionalised!"  Varma queried if provocative remarks, as often seen floating about, are responsible for the "weaponisation of Hinduism".  Singh reiterated that "India has been subjected to barbaric invasions", and has seen its temples and cultural heritage damaged. Does this, however, create the ground for a backlash?  "Yes," he said, "But it has got to be a measured and mature backlash, not one that is wild.”  Singh's book serves as a timely source of insights into the profound and inclusive cultural, social, intellectual and philosophical legacy Sanatan Dharm has left for all of us. New Delhi [India]: Delhi University's Ramanujan College has issued an order making a certificate-cum-refresher course on Bhagavad Gita mandatory for its teaching and non-teaching staff. This has left a section of teachers miffed, who said this could lead to the propagation of "sectarian beliefs". The 20-day course is scheduled to run till January 9, both online and offline, from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm.

In an email to the teaching staff, college principal SP Aggarwal wrote: "This course is in line with the setting up of the Indian Knowledge System Centre at the college. In view of this, it is our responsibility to first sensitise ourselves through such programmes."
It further said that the college will hold such programmes not only for Bhagavad Gita but also for the Vedas, which are part of the Indian Knowledge System. Meanwhile, Teachers' outfit Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) has demanded the withdrawal of the mandatory registration. In a statement, the DTF said Ramanujan principal SP Agarwal has "abused the powers vested in him to dictate" to all teachers and non-teaching staff to compulsorily register for and attend a refresher certificate course on Bhagavad Gita. "Illegally coercing teachers and non-teaching staff to remain engaged till 6.30 pm beyond official duties and the added burden of conducting the ongoing semester examinations of students is unacceptable," it added.
