Recently, CCPA issued advisory to all e-commerce platforms with regard to sale of Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs containing ingredients as listed in Schedule E(1) of Drugs and Cosmetics Rules highlighting that sale or facilitation of sale of such drugs shall be done done only after a valid prescription of a registered medical practitioner is uploaded by the user on the platform.CCPA has also recently issued Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements. The guidelines include conditions for valid and non-misleading advertisements, due diligence required for endorsement of advertisements and considerations for advertisements targeted at children.&nbsp;&nbsp;CCPA has also issued Safety Notices under Section 18(2)(j) of the Act to alert and caution consumers against buying goods which do not hold valid ISI Mark and violate compulsory BIS standards. While the first Safety Notice was issued with regard to Helmets, Pressure Cookers and Cooking gas cylinders, the second Safety Notice was issued with regard to household goods including electric immersion water heaters, sewing machines, microwave ovens, domestic gas stoves with LPG etc.The Central Consumer Protection Authority, headed by Chief Commissioner Mrs. Nidhi Khare, recently passed order against violation of consumer rights by Amazon e-commerce platform for allowing sale of domestic pressure cookers in violation to mandatory standards prescribed by the on its e-commerce platform.It may be mentioned that CCPA had initiate suo-moto action against e-commerce platforms for sale of domestic pressure cookers in violation to compulsory standards on its e-commerce platforms. CCPA had issued notices to major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, Flipkart, Paytm Mall, Shopclues and Snapdeal as well as to the sellers registered on these platforms.After examination of the response submitted by the company, it was observed that total 2,265 pressure cookers not conforming to mandatory standards were sold through Amazon after notification of the QCO. The total fee earned by the Amazon on sale of such pressure cookers through its platform was Rs.6,14,825.41.Amazon admitted that it earned ‘sales commission’ fee for the pressure cookers sold on its platform. It was observed by CCPA that when Amazon earns commercially from each sale of the product listed on its e-commerce platform, it can not disassociate itself in case of issues arising from sale of products through its platform.&nbsp;In the order, CCPA directed Amazon to notify all consumers of the 2,265 pressure cookers sold on its platform, recall the pressure cookers and reimburse their prices to the consumers and submit a compliance report of the same within 45 days. The company was also directed to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,00,000 for allowing sale of pressure cookers in violation to the QCO on its platform and violating rights of consumers.It may be mentioned that CCPA had passed similar order of penalty and recall of defective pressure cookers against Paytm Mall, which has complied with direction passed by CCPA and deposited the penalty of Rs.1,00,000.

Washington: Growth of the Amazon rainforest in our increasingly carbon-rich atmosphere could be limited by a lack of phosphorus in the soil, new research shows.
Higher concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) cause plants to grow more quickly, meaning they store more carbon.
This storage -- especially in huge forests like the Amazon -- helps to limit rising CO2 levels, slowing climate change.
However, plants also need nutrients to grow, and the new study shows that the availability of a particular nutrient, phosphorus, could limit the Amazon's ability to increase productivity (growth rate) as CO2 rises.
This could also make the rainforest less resilient to climate change, the researchers warn.
The study, published in the journal Nature, was carried out by an international team led by Brazil's National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) and the University of Exeter.
"Our results question the potential for current high rates of carbon uptake in Amazonia to be maintained" said lead author Hellen Fernanda Viana Cunha, from INPA.
"About 60% of the Amazon basin is on old soils with low phosphorus content, but the role of phosphorus in controlling productivity was unclear because most fertilisation experiments in other parts of the world have been in more phosphorus-rich systems.
"Our experiment, the Amazon Fertilisation Experiment (AFEX), examined the effects of adding phosphorus, nitrogen and base cations (other potentially key nutrients) in an old-growth, low-phosphorus area of the rainforest.
"Only phosphorus led to increased productivity in the first two years of the experiment.
"Having such rapid and strong responses to phosphorus, both above and below ground, is an indication that the whole system was functioning under severe phosphorus limitation."
Soil in tropical regions such as the Amazon generally formed millions of years ago, and some nutrients can be lost over time. While nutrients such as nitrogen can be absorbed from the air by micro-organisms associated with certain plants and soils, phosphorus is not available as a gas in the atmosphere -- so once it becomes depleted there is little opportunity for levels to increase.
In the new experiment, two years with extra phosphorus caused significant increases in fine root growth (29%) and canopy productivity (19%).
Stem growth did not increase. Cunha said this may be because roots and leaves require more phosphorus than stems, and stem growth is a slower process.
Long-term monitoring of the experiment is required to determine whether a stem wood productivity response becomes apparent.
The findings have major implications not only for carbon storage but also for the forest's resilience to climate change.
"To cope with and recover from increased threats such as droughts, we need the forest to be growing better than it used to," said Professor Iain Hartley, of the University of Exeter's Geography department.
"CO2 fertilisation could increase the forest's resilience, but our findings suggest phosphorus availability will limit that effect -- and therefore the risks caused by climate change become increasingly important.
"In short, parts of the rainforest growing in low-fertility soils may be more vulnerable than is currently recognised."
Testing this suggestion is an urgent research priority. The AmazonFACE experiment -- whose international team includes researchers from INPA and Exeter -- is working to address this key priority.
The new study was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council.

Per photos that Watchful, an AI product intelligence platform, provided to the Wall Street Journal, the feed, known currently as “Inspire”, will appear on the bottom navigation bar in the Amazon app, reports TechCrunch.&nbsp;
“We are constantly testing new features to help make customers’ lives a little easier,” an Amazon spokesperson was quoted as saying.
When users tap the diamond-shaped icon, they will see posts on the feed, which will include links to purchase any items featured in the post, the report said. As per the report, this is not the first time that Amazon has followed the same tactics as major social apps. It even has Posts, an Instagram copycat feature, as part of its advertising tools.
It is unclear whether this feature will eventually roll out on the Amazon app, companies often test feature ideas internally, even if some may never ship to the public. With the new teat, the e-commerce giant has joined companies with the same idea, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Spotify, Netflix, etc.

Bengaluru: With an aim to enhance user experience, e-commerce giant Amazon on Friday announced that it is rolling out two new upgrades to its Echo Studio.
The company said that it has added "custom-built spatial audio processing technology" for enhanced stereo sound and an improved "frequency range technology" for better mid-range clarity and deeper bass to Echo Studio.&nbsp;
"With the Spatial audio processing technology, users will get to experience enhanced stereo sound and greater width, clarity and presence," it added.
Moreover, the company said that the new features will turn the Echo Studio into a hi-fi stereo system, so vocal performances are more present in the centre, while the stereo-panned instruments on the side are better defined, creating a more immersive sound experience that captures the artist's intentions.
The enhanced "frequency range extension" technology delivers superior performance by improving mid-range clarity and deepening the bass.
The new features will automatically roll out on Echo Studio devices via a software update.&nbsp;

A fleet of electric two- and three-wheelers from TVS Motor will be used for Amazon's last-mile deliveries as part of this partnership.
Through partner networks and delivery personnel all around the nation, the two businesses will also test TVS Motor's electric car solutions.
According to Abhinav Singh, Director, Customer Fulfillment, Supply Chain and Global Specialty Fulfillment, Amazon India, "this will support our supply chain in minimising the environmental effect of our operations and contribute to Amazon India's aim of inducting 10,000 EVs into our fleet by 2025."
The country's fleet of delivery vans will comprise 10,000 EVs by 2025, the country's largest e-commerce company said in 2020. These EVs are being introduced in addition to Amazon's global goal of 100,000 EVs by 2030.
Manu Saxena, Senior Vice President, Future Mobility, TVS Motor Company, said: "With the excellent success of TVS 'iQube Electric,' we now plan to expand our electric offering across several segments, and commercial mobility is at the opportune inflexion point.
For the business-to-business (B2B) market, TVS Motor is prepared with electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler product alternatives, as well as an ecosystem of linked services and alternative ownership.

Amazon is now looking into whether it should "focus on trying to add new capabilities to Alexa," according to the report.
The cost-cutting review includes the devices unit with Alexa, a voice assistant available on a variety of Amazon devices.
"The business has more than 10,000 employees and is a major recipient of investment capital," according to the report.
It appears that the e-commerce giant is considering reducing its investments in Alexa-driven products.
An Amazon spokesperson was quoted as saying that as part of this year's review, "we're of course taking into account the current macro-environment and considering opportunities to optimise costs."
Amazon's shares went up by over 4 per cent on Thursday after the report about the cost-cutting review came out.
Once part of our private lives as virtual assistants, more than 35 smart speaker models have now been discontinued (as of April 2022), 46 brands haven't released a new smart speaker since 2019 and 34 companies haven't released a new smart speaker since 2018.
Although Amazon-branded smart speakers grew 33 per cent during the second quarter (Q2) compared to last year, other brands like Google and Apple were down 31 per cent and 57 per cent, respectively, according to global market research firm Omdia.&nbsp;

New Delhi (The Hawk): Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi signed a MoU with Amazon Kisan to combine strengths and create synergy between the two organizations for guiding the farmers on scientific cultivation of different crops for optimum yield and income. ICAR will provide technological backstopping to the farmers through Amazon’s network. It will improve farmers’ livelihood and boost crop yield. This MoU in farmer’s partnership with Amazon Kisan program will help ensuring access to high quality fresh produce for consumers across India, including through Amazon Fresh. Dr Himanshu Pathak, Secretary DARE &amp; Director General ICAR, on this occasion, emphasized upon secondary agriculture for better remuneration for the farmers. He further highlighted the importance and role of critical inputs in agriculture and season-based crop plans. London: Amazon and Apple were fined a total of $218 million in Spain for allegedly stifling competition in the country's e-commerce industry for reselling and marketing of Apple products.
Apple was penalised $161 million and Amazon was fined around $57 million by the Spanish antitrust authority CNMC.
The country's competition watchdog found that both the companies "unreasonably restricted the number of resellers of Apple products on the Amazon website in Spain".
The tech giants also "limited the advertising spaces where competing Apple products can be advertised on the Amazon website in Spain".
"Finally, they limited the possibility of Amazon directing marketing campaigns to customers of Apple products on its website in Spain to offer them competing products from other brands," the authority said in a statement.
Now, Apple and Amazon have settled on a set of contractual provisions that regulate Amazon's role as an Apple distributor, which previously had an impact on the availability of Apple and other brands on the Amazon website in Spain.
The watchdog claims that more than 90% of the resellers who were using the Amazon website in Spain to sell Apple products at retail were excluded from the country's main online market.
"Sales of Apple products through the Amazon website in Spain by sellers based in other EU countries were reduced, thus limiting trade between member states and there was an increase in the relative prices paid by consumers for the purchase of Apple products in said online market in Spain", the antitrust authority noted.—Inputs from Agencies

San Francisco: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a wide range of healthcare-related applications and services that include generative artificial intelligence (AI) resources designed to assist clinicians in transcribing and evaluating their conversations with patients.
The company released AWS HealthScribe, a new HIPAA-eligible service that lets healthcare software vendors build clinical apps that automatically create preliminary clinical notes by analysing conversations between patients and doctors.
According to Amazon Web Services, AWS HealthScribe allows users to integrate an advanced set of AI-powered features into their clinical application, all with the goal of accelerating documentation.
Healthcare application builders can integrate AWS HealthScribe in their clinical application to provide key highlights of the patient visit to the medical practitioner.
"By consolidating these capabilities, AWS HealthScribe reduces the need for training, optimising, and integrating separate AI services and building custom models, allowing for faster implementation. Customers can focus on delivering value to their end users without worrying about optimising individual AI components," AWS said in a blogpost on Wednesday.
Moreover, the company mentioned that 3M Health Information Systems (HIS), Babylon Health and ScribeEMR are among the companies already using HealthScribe. “Machine learning on AWS enables 3M HIS to transform clinician workflows and laborious processes to help health care organizations streamline clinical documentation and billing,” said Garri Garrison, President, 3M HIS.
AWS HealthScribe is available in preview in the US. Amazon has also announced AWS HealthImaging, a service that will make it easy to store, transform, and analyse medical imaging data "at a petabyte scale."
Customers can use HealthImaging to run medical imaging apps on a single copy of each medical picture in the AWS cloud.
It also supports dynamic pricing for active and archive data, as well as "subsecond" image access latencies from AWS' Frequent Access or Archive Instant Access storage tiers.—Inputs from Agencies

Quito: The Yasun National Park in the Amazon rainforest is one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth. According to CNN, Ecuadorians have decided to forbid oil extraction there. According to the National Electoral Council of Ecuador (CNE), approximately 59 per cent of voters on Monday morning opposed the oil drilling while 41 per cent supported it after more than 92 per cent of the ballots had been tabulated. As the globe continues to use fossil fuels, the effects of human-caused climate change are becoming more severe. The Earth saw the hottest June on record last month, and according to CNN, some scientists are concerned that the Amazon is nearing a catastrophic tipping point. The Yasuní National Park park spans around 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres) at the meeting point of the Amazon, the Andes and the Equator. Just one hectare of Yasuní land supposedly contains more animal species than the whole of Europe and more tree species than exist in all of North America, CNN reported. But underneath the park lies Ecuador’s largest reserve of crude oil. In 2007, President Rafael Correa proposed that the international community give Ecuador USD 3.6 billion to leave Yasuní undisturbed. But the plan failed. In 2016, the Ecuadorian state oil company began drilling in Block 43, around 0.01 per cent of the National Park, which today produces more than 55,000 barrels a day, amounting to around 12 per cent of Ecuador’s oil production, CNN reported. Yasunidos, an environmental collective, has been pushing for the vote to ban drilling in the park for a decade. In May they and other groups secured a victory when the country’s constitutional court authorized the vote to be included on the ballot of the presidential election held on August 20. Some politicians, including energy minister Fernando Santos, have argued that a ban would have negative impacts on Ecuador’s economy. Environmental and Indigenous groups argued that Ecuador needs to move away from fossil fuels and protect the Amazon, saying that other economic activities such as eco-tourism could help fill the gap. In a post on X (the platform formerly knowEcuadorn as Twitter), Yasunidos called the result “a historic victory for Ecuador and for the planet!” Mitch Anderson, executive director of the non-profit Amazon Frontlines, said in a statement, “In one fell swoop, the Ecuadorian people struck a mighty blow to the oil industry, protected one of the most biodiverse forests in the Amazon, and showed the world what grassroots climate action really looks like.” The referendum took place alongside the presidential and legislative elections on Sunday, CNN reported. Luisa González, of the Movimiento Revolución Ciudadana party, took the lead in the first round of the elections, which have been marred by political assassinations and violence driven by criminal organizations vying to control the country’s drug trafficking routes. González will face second-place finisher Daniel Noboa in a run-off election in October as no candidate won more than 50 per cent of the ballot. —ANI

Ecuadorians Vote To Ban Oil Drilling In Amazon

New Delhi: A 36-year-old man, working as senior manager with e-commerce giant Amazon, was shot dead in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura area, police said on Wednesday.  The incident took place at around 11.30pm on Tuesday when five unidentified people opened fire at Harpreet Gill (36) and his friend Govind Singh (32) in Subhash Vihar.
Shot in the head, Gill was pronounced brought dead by doctors at the Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, while his friend was under treatment, police said.  Gill was a resident of Bhajanpura and worked as a senior manager with Amazon. The bullet entered from the right side of his head behind the ear and exited from the other side, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey said.
Singh is a resident of Bhajanpura and owns an eatery in the area. He, too, was shot in the head and was admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, the DCP said.  The duo was on a motorcycle when the five assailants on a scooter and a motorcycle intercepted them and opened fire, Tirkey said.  Footage from CCTV cameras of the area is being analysed to identify the attackers, police said, adding that the reason behind the firing is being ascertained.
A case of murder had been registered, police said.

New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested 18-year-old youth in connection with the murder of Amazon senior manager in the Bhajanpura area of the national capital, an official said on Thursday.   The investigators said that the reason behind the firing which led to the murder of Harpreet Gill (36), and serious injury to Govind Singh (32), was road rage.  “Bilal Gani alias Mallu, a resident of Subhash Mohalla, Bhajanpura, was apprehended near Signature Bridge at about 02:00 a.m.,” said a senior police official.
While a manhunt has been initiated to nab Mohd Sameer a.k.a Maya, Sohail alias Bawarchi, Mohd Junaid alias Mama Biryani and Adnan alias Don, all local gangsters.  As per the police, the incident occurred around 11:37 p.m. on Tuesday at Subhash Vihar in Bhajanpura and the police control room call was made at 11:53 p.m.  Upon reaching the spot, it was found that Harpreet and Govind were going on their Splendour bike near Gali No. 8 when five men on a scooty and a bike intercepted them.  "The assailants opened unprovoked fire and fled from the spot," said a senior police official.  Harpreet, who was recently promoted as a senior manager in Amazon and was to move to Benglauru, suffered a gunshot injury on his head and was declared brought dead at the Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital.  "Govind also sustained a bullet wound and was referred to the LNJP hospital for further treatment," said the official.  On interrogation of Bilal, he has revealed that he along with his four other associates -- Maya, Sohail, Junaid and Adnan -- were having a party at Maya’s house in North Ghonda, Bhajanpura.  “Around 10:30 pm, all five individuals decided to go for a ride, with Maya carrying a pistol. They were using a TVS Ntorq and a Honda Activa as their vehicles. The group navigated through the narrow lanes of Bhajanpura, making several stops before eventually entering Gali No. 8/4, Subhash Vihar, Bhajanpura,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy N Tirkey.  This particular alley, Gali No. 8/4, was so narrow that two motorcycles couldn't pass each other without one having to yield and move to the side. Coincidentally, Harpreet and Govind were approaching from the opposite direction within the same alley.  “Both parties insisted that the other should stop and make way. Bilal and his associates responded aggressively, with Junaid exiting the vehicle to slap Govind. When Govind and Harpreet attempted to confront the young men, Maya fired shots at close range, hitting both Harpreet and Govind,” said the DCP.  “Following the attack, the assailants fled the scene, leaving the victims injured on the ground. Unfortunately, Harpreet succumbed to his injuries, while Govind is currently undergoing treatment,” said the DCP.  “After the incident, all the suspects decided to keep a low profile for some time. Bilal was apprehended earlier this morning. The identities of the accused were ascertained by reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity,” said the DCP.  The official said that Bilal is no stranger to crime. In 2022, he was involved in two heinous cases, including a murder in Bhajanpura and a robbery case where he and his associates had robbed a scooty from a person in Bhajanpura.  “Being a minor at that time, he managed to come out of the Children Observation Home in no time,” the official added.
