New Delhi (The Hawk):&nbsp;Researchers have developed smart IoT-based machine for welding ferrous tubes faster than conventional fusion welding or solid-state processes presently used with less consumption of energy. As manufacturing industries move toward advanced technologies, there is a requirement to minimise energy consumption and automate the welding process to avoid human-induced errors and also manufacture products swiftly in an eco-friendly manner.Dr. S. Arungalai Vendan, Professor, Electronics, and Communication, School of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar University, Bangalore developed the Internet of Things (IoT) integrated machine titled “Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt Welding Equipment" embedded with sensors for sound, vibration, arc light intensity, temperature as well as smoke, along with processors for abstracting data for predicting the quality of the welding.&nbsp;The low-cost IoT integrated machine was supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Dr. Vendan who obtained his Ph.D. in MIAB welding explored the process at Welding Research Institute, Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited, Tiruchirappalli, India for pressure part applications. Observing the huge potential of adopting the process for various industrial applications to join ferrous tubes, the investigator came up with the idea of developing a low-cost IoT integrated MIAB machine for joining ferrous tubes.&nbsp;Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt (MIAB) welding involves striking of an arc between two coaxially placed tubes, followed by interaction of the axial component of arc current and radial component of a magnetic field that causes a force called Lorentz force. This force acts on the arc and impels it around the joint line with an approximate linear speed of 200m/s that uniformly heats the tube surfaces upto the highest temperature at which it is solid (solidus temperature). The softened tube edges (butt ends) are then forced into penetration by forging to form a weld.The equipment developed is customized for welding mild steel/ low carbon steel tubes for 3 outer diameters -- 21.5mm, 22.5mm and 27 mm respectively with 2-3 mm thicknesses which are typically employed in automotive and structural applications. The scientists are in the process of establishing new equations for two dependent parameters-- arc velocity and arc rotational sound, based on which an approximate prediction can be made about the welding.

San Francisco: If you are a young adult and spend a lot of time on your smartphone that it may cause a rapid decline in your mental health, says new research.According to a report by Sapien Labs, the growth of smartphone use and an increase in social isolation point to a decline in the mental health of young adults aged 18-24."Data shows that people now spend 7-10 hours online," Tara Thiagarajan, Chief Scientist at Sapien Labs, said in a statement."This leaves little time for in-person social engagement. Prior to the Internet, by the time someone turned 18, we estimate that they would likely have spent anywhere from 15,000 to 25,000 hours interacting with peers and family in person."And now, Thiagarajan said, the research showed the internet age has likely cut that range down to 1,500 to 5,000 hours.She mentioned that social interaction teaches people how to read facial expressions, body language, physical touch, appropriate emotional responses, and conflict resolution, life skills that are crucial for socio-emotional development. Without these skills, people can feel detached from society and possibly harbour suicidal thoughts.The report also revealed that over the pandemic, the mental well-being of each younger age group of adults fell much more dramatically.Across 34 countries where data was acquired, the decline, particularly for young adults (ages 18-24), exacerbates a trend that existed prior to the pandemic but began after 2010, alongside the growth of smartphone use.Prior to 2010, studies showed that young adults had the highest levels of psychological well-being, but since then, the trend has been in the opposite direction.The study outlined the key symptoms that impact the majority of young adults 18-24 or are most significantly amplified or deteriorated compared to older adults.These include obsessive, strange or unwanted thoughts, self-image, self-worth and confidence, feelings of being detached from reality, relationships with others, suicidal thoughts, fear and anxiety, and feelings of sadness, distress or hopelessness. —IANS

Geneva:&nbsp;While the 5G network is yet to be available worldwide, global smartphone brand Nokia’s CEO Pekka Lundmark has claimed that 6G mobile networks will be commercially available by 2030.Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Lundmark mentioned that he does not believe that smartphones will be the most “common interface”, reports GizmoChina.“By then, definitely the smartphone as we know it today will not anymore be the most common interface,” Lundmark was quoted as saying.“Many of these things will be built directly into our bodies,” he added.Lundmark did not go into much detail about exactly how or what this will seem like but he went on to say that by 2030, there will be a “digital twin of everything”, which will necessitate “huge computational resources”.The report mentioned that companies have already started investing greatly in 6G.Some of the world’s biggest tech giants, such as Qualcomm, Apple, Google, and LG, are seen to participate and even collaborate on this next-generation technology.—IANS

This initiative is envisaged to help Indian MSMEs adopt industry 4.0 practices and self-reliant manufacturing.The IIT Madras SMDTC aims to democratise smart manufacturing and digital transformation, said a statement from IIT Madras. The centre will focus on education and community interaction for capacity building, maturity assessment, experience centre with model factory facilities, collaborative research, 5G enablement and supply chain collaboration.The centre is formed in collaboration with the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Centre (AMTDC), IIT Madras, MESA International (Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association) and Cantier Systems. New Delhi:&nbsp;China's smartphone sales hit a fresh low in the April-June quarter (down 14.2 per cent) to reach less than half of the sales of the historical peak in the fourth quarter of 2016, a new report has shown.The last time the sales were lower than this point was nearly a decade ago in Q4 2012, when the iPhone 5 was introduced.With a 19.8 per cent share, Vivo retained its first place in Q2, followed by Honor (18.3 per cent) and OPPO (17.9 per cent), according to Counterpoint Research.The quarter's volumes were 12.6 per cent lower than the level seen during the severe pandemic-hit Q1 2020."During this period, major cities across China, including financial and manufacturing hub Pan-Shanghai, went through full or partial lockdowns. The hardest hit was the services sector, which fell into contraction territory, from 4 per cent YoY growth in the first quarter to 0.4 per cent in the second quarter," said senior analyst Ivan Lam."Weak consumer sentiment combined with the high smartphone penetration rate in China resulted in poor Q2 performance of smartphone sales," Lam added.During the quarter, vivo maintained its leadership."The mid-to-high-end S12 series helped vivo grab a good share in the $250-$399 segment. Sub-brand iQOO also received positive market feedback, especially from younger customers," said research analyst Mengmeng Zhang.Honor continues its great comeback by expanding its offline presence."Honor managed to take share from all the leading Chinese brands, including Huawei, during the quarter. Puducherry:&nbsp;Puducherry government is planning to convert all classrooms in government primary schools to smart classrooms.Officials have drawn up plans to introduce smart classes in the primary schools of the territory with audio-visual devices, smart televisions and projectors, and e-content where the facility is planned.Around 200 primary schools in the territory will be converted into smart classrooms in the initial phase. Sources in the education department of the UT told IANS that around 1.5 to 2 lakh rupees are required for converting each classroom and the money for this will be tapped through Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.Puducherry Education Minister A. Namassivayam, while speaking to IANS, said, “We are in the process of converting the primary schools into smart classes and we are trying to scout for funds. Presently the class 10 and 12 government school classrooms across the Union Territory have Information Communication Technology classrooms and we are planning to extend the same to middle and primary schools, thus converting all the government schools class rooms to smart classes.”The education department is also in the process of implementing the Nipun Bharath Mission which is to create an enabling environment of foundational literacy and numeracy. This is to ensure that each child achieves the writing, reading, and numerical skills before they reach class 3.The Puducherry government has already initiated discussions in converting the classrooms into smart classes with a Bengaluru-based vendor and state school education secretary A. San Francisco:&nbsp;Google on Monday sued high-tech speaker and audio technology company Sonos again, alleging that the company infringed on its patents around smart speakers and voice control technology.The tech giant filed two lawsuits in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, and plans to file similar lawsuits with the US International Trade Commission soon, reports The Verge.The lawsuits are being filed to "defend our technology and challenge Sonos's clear, continued infringement of our patents," a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.Sonos "started an aggressive and misleading campaign against our products, at the expense of our shared customers," Google alleged.In a ruling in January this year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said that Google violated five patents of high-tech speaker and audio technology company Sonos, relating to smart speakers.A US judge had ruled in August last year that Google infringed upon the Sonos patents.In January 2020, Sonos first sued tech giant Google for allegedly copying its wireless speaker design, urging the ITC to ban Google products like laptops, phones and speakers.Sonos CEO Patrick Spence testified before the US House antitrust committee that Google "blocked the company from enabling both Amazon's Alexa assistant and the Google Assistant from being active at the same time".Google had said "we do not expect any impact to our ability to import or sell our products".According to Sonos, starting in 2016 shortly after the first Google Home was launched, it began warning Google about patent infringement but to no avail.Sonos said it accused Google of infringing on a total of 100 patents.Google countersued audio company Sonos for patent infringement, alleging that the tech giant contributed "substantial Google engineering resources" to help Sonos in the past.Google has always maintained that its technology was developed independently and it was not copied from Sonos.—IANS

New Delhi:&nbsp;The Indian government is reportedly planning to put curbs on China-based smartphone players from selling low-end smartphones (less that Rs 12,000) to give a much-needed boost to homegrown brands like Micromax, Lava, Karbonn and others.According to a Bloomberg report citing sources that came out on Monday, the country "seeks to restrict Chinese smartphone makers from selling devices cheaper than Rs 12,000 ($150) to kick-start its faltering domestic industry".The move, said the report citing people close to the matter, may push Chinese smartphone makers "out of the lower segment of the world's second-biggest mobile market".The government's intentions, if true, will give a body blow to companies like Xiaomi and Realme that have captured about 50 per cent market share in India in the sub-$150 (Rs 12,000 and below) segment, according to Counterpoint Research."Overall, sub-$150 smartphones contributed to 31 per cent of the total smartphone volumes in India in the June quarter this year, compared to 49 per cent in the same quarter in 2018," Research Director Tarun Pathak told IANS."Chinese brands dominate 75-80 per cent of these volumes as Jio PhoneNext has ramped up in the last few quarters. New Delhi: The industrial Internet Of Things (IIoT) spending in the discrete manufacturing sector in Asia-Pacific is likely to reach $89 billion by 2025, according to a new report.
Discrete manufacturing is the production of distinct items like automobiles, furniture, toys, smartphones and aeroplanes, among others.
According to an IDC report, manufacturing is the most common target of infrastructure cybercrime today, accounting for one-third of all assaults.
Additionally, the level of competitiveness is rising and so do the expectations of the client which demands improved personalisation, rapid information, and better assistance before making a purchase.
"Most traditional manufacturing plants were not built with cybersecurity in mind. With the advancement of hacking technology, every point of connection increases the danger of cyberattacks and cybercrime, which can result in interference, remote access, intellectual property theft, and data loss or change," said Piyush Singh, senior market analyst for IoT Insights, IDC Asia/Pacific.
Discrete manufacturers all over the world are actively investigating how to leverage the Internet Of Things (IoT) to link their supply chains, equipment, and products better.
Manufacturers can profit greatly from retrofitting smart sensors to old equipment because of the insights they can obtain about their equipment, said the report.
In Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ), close to one-third of all IoT spending in 2020 (hardware, software, services, and connectivity combined) was for the manufacturing industry.
"Retrofitting machinery with IoT capabilities is a cost-effective solution to update outdated pieces of equipment, especially when compared with totally replacing them," said Singh.
China is placing a large bet on the Industrial Internet Of Things to boost production and efficiency by simplifying and automating manufacturing processes over the Internet, the report mentioned.&nbsp;

Bengaluru: As India plans to usher in the 5G era, the demand for 5G-compatible devices has nosedived in Southeast Aisa as practical uses of 5G have yet to be seen amid rising inflation, a new report said on Monday.
5G deployment in developing Southeast Asian markets has been abysmal, ensuring the hype for 5G has dwindled, and demand has shifted to more practical aspects of smartphones such as battery life, storage, processor speed and camera quality, reports Canalys.
"The demand for 5G devices has come to a standstill. 5G devices experienced their first sequential decline to 18 per cent of overall smartphone shipments in Q2," said research analyst Chiew Le Xuan.
Growing inflation has resulted in consumers looking for longer-lasting devices over less practical qualities such as 5G.
Practical uses of 5G have yet to be seen, and is especially unnecessary for low-mid devices when 4G speeds are sufficient in day-to-day usage.
"Maintaining device affordability while boosting profitability is the greatest challenge fora-vendors," Xuan added.
In the second quarter (Q2), Southeast Asian smartphone shipments reached 24.5 million units, a 7 per cent drop from the previous quarter.
Samsung retained its leading position, despite a 19 per cent fall from Q1, owing to lower than anticipated demand for its mid-to-high-end A series.
Indonesia remained the largest market, with 37 per cent share and 9.1 million shipments, followed by Philippines with 4.4 million shipments.
Thailand's smartphone market declined 14 per cent sequentially to 4 million units, and Vietnam smartphone market declined 32 per cent quarter-on-quarter to 3.1 million shipments, as a result of weakened consumer demand stemming from global uncertainties and rising commodity prices.
Malaysia's smartphone market grew 6 per cent to 2.4 million shipments.&nbsp;

New York: US scientists have developed a contact lens that can help in the early detection of cancer using tears and help in the treatment.
The novel lens, developed by the team at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) in California, is able to capture and detect exosomes, the nanometer-sized vesicles found in bodily secretions that have the potential for being diagnostic cancer biomarkers.&nbsp;
The lens was designed with microchambers bound to antibodies that can capture exosomes found in tears. This antibody-conjugated signalling microchamber contact lens (ACSM-CL) can be stained for detection with nanoparticle-tagged specific antibodies for selective visualisation.
This offers a potential platform for cancer pre-screening and a supportive diagnostic tool that is easy, rapid, sensitive, cost-effective, and non-invasive.
Exosomes are formed within most cells and secreted into many bodily fluids, such as plasma, saliva, urine, and tears. Once thought to be the dumping grounds for unwanted materials from their cells of origin, it is now known that exosomes can transport different biomolecules between cells.
But, the TIBI team devised their ACSM-CL for capturing exosomes from tears, an optimum and cleaner source of exosomes than blood, urine, and saliva.
"Exosomes are a rich source of markers and biomolecules which can be targeted for several biomedical applications," said Ali Khademhosseini, TIBI's Director and CEO.
"The methodology that our team has developed greatly facilitates our ability to tap into this source."
In an initial validation experiment, the ACSM-CL was tested against exosomes secreted into supernatants from ten different tissue and cancer cell lines. The ability to capture and detect exosomes was validated by the spectroscopic shifts observed in all the test samples, in comparison with the negative controls.
Similar results were obtained when the ACSM-CL was tested against ten different tear samples collected from volunteers.
In final experiments, exosomes in supernatants collected from three different cell lines with different surface marker expressions were tested against the ACSM-CL, along with different combinations of marker-specific detection antibodies.
The resultant patterns of detection and non-detection of exosomes from the three different cell lines were as expected, thus validating the ACSM-CL's ability to accurately capture and detect exosomes with different surface markers.&nbsp;

New Delhi: Led by smart speakers, the global installed base of smart home devices is set to exceed 2 billion devices this year, a new report has shown. Smart speakers had the most global shipments in 2021, with 195 million, followed by lighting, plugs/switches and connected health devices, according to global research firm Omdia. The devices forecast to grow the fastest over the next five years include water leak sensors/shutoff valves, connected major home appliances, plugs/switches, air quality monitors and smart door locks, projected to have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) greater than 30 per cent from 2021 to 2026.
"It is an exciting time for the smart home industry as brands rapidly innovate and produce devices that combine advanced features, like facial recognition and video analytics with door locks and the inclusion of radar technology in smart speakers and thermostats," said Blake Kozak, senior principal analyst, Omdia. Omdia estimated that about 55 per cent of broadband households in the US had smart home devices installed last year. For the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, about 21 per cent of broadband households had a smart home device in 2021. By comparison, the Americas region had a penetration rate of 44 per cent while Asia and Oceania had a penetration rate of about 14 per cent in 2021. In terms of market share for unit shipments, Xiaomi was estimated to be the market leader in 2021, followed by Alibaba, Amazon, Google, and Baidu. The next few years will also prove difficult for many brands as costs continue to rise. However, strong growth for smart home devices, on par with pre-pandemic levels, is expected to return starting in 2023, driven by increased demand in energy management solutions and the impending release of the Matter, an open-source reliable IoT compatibility industry standard globally, the report noted.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will in detail study the report submitted by the one-man committee to investigate the alleged irregularities in the implementation of projects under the Smart Cities Mission during the previous AIADMK regime.
There was widespread criticism of the effectiveness of the Smart City Projects in Chennai city after the metro witnessed heavy floods in November 2021.
During the last monsoon, the T Nagar area in Chennai, which was developed after huge funds were spent under the Smart City Scheme, was heavily flooded.
Sources in the Tamil Nadu government told IANS that the one-man committee of retired IAS officer P.W.C. Davidar has a detailed and specific analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the Smart City projects implemented in 11 districts of the state under the Smart City mission.
According to officials, the report has explained whether the smart city projects had flaws in its implementation, and has also studied whether all the guidelines of the smart city scheme were followed in a proper and full-proof manner.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had come out heavily against the former Municipal administration and water supplies minister, S.P. Velumani after inspecting the flood-affected areas during the 2021 monsoon period. Stalin had then said that no one knew what happened to the funds received under the smart city project.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister, Ma Subramanian while speaking to IANS said, “Chief Minister will study the report in detail and take action if any irregularities are found.”
The committee was formed in March 2022 after several allegations were made against the implementation of the smart city scheme in Chennai.
Sources in the government told IANS that the committee had conducted detailed inquiries with smart city officials and other concerned contractors in all the 11 districts where the projects under the scheme were implemented in Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

New Delhi: As India rolls out 5G with showcasing some early use cases with telcos setting some aggressive deadlines, millions of smartphone users will only enjoy the super-fast Internet in 2024 amid infrastructure limitations, limited use cases and low 5G handset penetration, industry experts said on Monday. India is home to more than 500 million smartphone users and over 100 million users with 5G-ready smartphones wish to upgrade to a 5G subscription in 2023, according to a latest Ericsson report. However, there are multiple challenges ahead for telecom service providers to meet the tough roll-out deadlines. "In theory, there are use cases out there which really warrant and demand 5G: enterprise solutions, private networks, IoT, logistics. But it could take a year or more for those applications to really take off," Prasanto K. Roy, a leading technology and public policy expert, told IANS. Telcos will focus on converting existing higher-ARPU (average revenue per user) individual customers to 5G, which really limits how much more they can charge for 5G especially in a competitive space.&nbsp;
"I don't see 5G really bumping up ARPU overall in any significant way -- at least not in 2023," Roy said. In the top four metros, consumers should be able to experience 5G in early October (according to Airtel) to late October (according to Reliance Jio), with Airtel planning to take 5G to eight cities this month. There are no 5G roll out plans from Vodafone-Idea yet. "However, with tariffs still unclear, I do not know if current 4G customers will all be able to sample a limited trial, or will have to upgrade right away. Although Airtel (and possibly Jio) expects a revenue increase (from its current ARPU of Rs 183), I do not expect most customers to shell out much more for 5G," Roy noted. The Ericsson study, however, claimed that the Indian smartphone users are willing to pay a 45 per cent premium for a plan bundled with novel experiences, which could be a delight for Internet service providers ready with 5G.&nbsp;
According to Neil Shah, Vice President of Research at Counterpoint, in terms of population coverage, for all operators, India should reach the current blanket 4G coverage by the end of 2024 , way sooner than the 4G or 3G era. "Jio is in a driver's seat with respect to its peers to likely achieve a pan India 5G network rollout over the next 15 months with no 2G, 3G and 4G baggage," Shah told IANS. Not only consumers but also enterprises and the public sector will be able to benefit from 5G over the period of next two years. "Airtel, on the other hand, also has been building a highly upgradeable network to easily reuse the same towers for both 4G and 5G. Most of its key circles should be able to experience 5G by mid-2024," Shah noted. According to smartphone players, 5G has the potential to bring together the entire ecosystem and online gaming, augmented/virtual reality (AR-VR) experience, along with content creation, will take centre-stage with the launch of 5G services.&nbsp;
"With 5G being officially available now, we are looking forward to exploring the numerous opportunities it provides to us and will be directing our efforts into making this technology even more accessible to users," said Madhav Sheth, CEO realme India, VP, realme and President, realme International Business Group. According to Roy, infrastructure limitations and limited use cases and revenue also pose great challenges for telcos and smartphone players. "To really leverage 5G bandwidth and latency, towers are to be connected by fibre. Only a third of them are 'fiberised' so I would expect 5G service to be reserved for large cities until the fiber gets to twice that number of towers," he explained. Telcos have also struggled with adequate tower density even for 4G, but 5G needs a much higher tower density -- increasing upfront investment. "All this capex investment would also be limited by the telcos' high debt and stagnant ARPU (revenues), already stretched by spectrum fees and initial 5G investments," according to Roy.&nbsp;
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expects telcos to invest Rs 2-3 lakh crore on 5G and 4G in the next two years for better voice quality and high-speed data. There are also 5G network equipment availability challenges, because of very strict supply chain reporting mandates for cybersecurity and related reasons since June 2021 (called the NSDTS directive). "This is slowing down approved telecom and IT equipment available for the telcos, or requiring them to apply for case by case exemptions," Roy told IANS.&nbsp;

New Delhi (The Hawk): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that law enforcement organisations need to be 10 steps ahead of the criminal world, underscoring the significance of having a smart law and order system that is compatible with cutting-edge technologies.
Additionally, he suggested that states and union territories consider if "one nation, one police uniform" was feasible.
PM Modi spoke via video conference to the Chintan Shivir of state home ministers and said, "The nature of crimes is evolving today. We must comprehend modern technologies. The 5G era has arrived. Thus, we must exercise greater caution."
According to the PM, facial recognition, automatic number plate identification, drone, and CCTV technology would all see significant advancements with 5G technology.
"The development of 5G technology has made awareness equally crucial. The goal is to make India's law and order system intelligent. Technology assists with both criminal investigation and crime prevention. We'll need to stay one step ahead of the criminal underworld "said he.
The PM emphasised the importance of adopting a positive outlook and urged greater synergy between police stations through collaboration, rapport, and a streamlined process.
The interconnection between the police of various states is a crucial factor in order to increase the effectiveness of the police and strengthen peace and order, according to the prime minister.
He stated: "Now, law and order are not confined to a single jurisdiction. Criminal activity is becoming more interstate and global. Criminals now have more power to perpetrate crimes thanks to technology. Beyond the border, criminals are abusing technology. We will need to continue developing new technology to combat anything from cybercrime to the use of drones to smuggle drugs or weapons."
According to the PM, collaboration between federal, state, and local institutions is crucial.
He emphasised that the Police Technology Mission was launched by the government to implement technology-driven reforms and procedures to bolster India's police force.
The PM stated that it is obvious that at times of natural calamities, organisations like the NDRF and the SDRF assist individuals who are stranded, and this inspires people's faith in the government.
"I implore all states to collaborate and create a single police uniform. By mass producing these items, job opportunities will be created, and the police will develop a unified identity "PM stated.
The prime minister also issued a warning against the effects of fake news.
"We must take firm action against evil groups for the security and rights of law-abiding individuals.
A single false report can cause havoc across the country.
People need to be taught to consider before forwarding information and to double check information before believing it "added the prime minister.
According to the Prime Minister, an outstanding illustration of cooperative federalism is the Chintan Shivir of home ministers in Surajkund. He asserted that states can collaborate for the good of the nation, draw inspiration from one another, and learn from one another.

The Chintan Shivir of Home Ministers is an initiative to offer a national perspective to policy creation on issues connected to internal security, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Shivir would increase planning and coordination amongst many stakeholders at the central and state levels in the spirit of cooperative federalism.
According to the release, the Shivir will discuss topics such as the modernization of police forces, control of cybercrime, expanded use of IT in the criminal justice system, management of land borders, coastal security, women's protection, and drug trafficking, among others.

Roorkee (The Hawk): The research team brings the 'Jury Award of the 2022 IEEE Smart Cities Award' for the D-SIDES project to the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee). Prof. N. P. Padhy, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, leading the D-SIDES project (funded by DST, India), aims to build future grids that are economical, dependable, and powered by decentralized renewable energy sources.&nbsp;
The institute has already installed solar PV systems in 36 different sites across campus with a total amount of 2.8 MW of solar power capacity. A self-sufficient model under the D-SIDES project aims for a green campus that will decrease fossil fuel consumption and savings for future generations. The entire model is based on the replication of smart city technologies for the benefit of society and to set the global standard in this regard by serving as a neutral broker of information amongst industry, academic, and government stakeholders.
IIT Roorkee distribution network depends on a conventional grid system. To make a self-reliant distribution network, IIT Roorkee has been performing pioneering work in recent years to develop an eco-friendly campus utilizing renewable resources. Smart grid technology must be integrated into the existing grid infrastructure. The goal is to build a self-sufficient, zero-emission green campus. Furthermore, implementing the energy storage system would allow for increased renewable energy utilization while simultaneously lowering the carbon impact.&nbsp;
Prof. K K Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, empathized, "The mission was to recognize the authoritative voice and leading source of credible technical information and educational content within the scope of smart cities identified. IIT Roorkee will facilitate and promote the collaborative and individual work of its Member Societies regarding smart city technology following functional and application domains within the context of urban infrastructure systems."
Explaining the working of the model, Prof. N. P. Padhy, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, said, "Today, as solar installations proliferate, integration at the distribution level is being accompanied by significant challenges in the distribution network. To address issues that might occur during large-scale integration of renewable energy sources and reach a component level analysis will be carried out in the real distribution network utilizing Power Hardware in Loop (PHIL) simulation."
The ADMIRE lab at Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Roorkee, is equipped with RTDS, Opal-RT, and FPGA controllers, a real-time study of weak distribution networks with solar integration, and implementation of a monitoring system. An advanced storage management network is designed to optimize the selection, sizing, and placement of distributed storage systems while taking network configuration and solar generation into account to improve the efficacy and reliability of the distribution network with the least amount of investment.

The research team brings the 'Jury Award of the 2022 IEEE Smart Cities Award' for the D-SIDES project to the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee). Prof. N. P. Padhy, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, leading the D-SIDES project (funded by DST, India), aims to build future grids that are economical, dependable, and powered by decentralized renewable energy sources.
