Delhi: The Delhi high court on Thursday set aside the AAP government's doorstep ration delivery scheme -- Mukhymantri Ghar Ghar Ration Yojna. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Jasmeet Singh said the Delhi government is free to bring another doorstep delivery scheme but it cannot use grains provided by the Centre for this doorstep scheme.The high court allowed two petitions filed by ration dealers challenging the scheme. The high court had on January 10 reserved its order on the pleas by petitioners Delhi Sarkari Ration Dealers Sangh and Delhi Ration Dealers Union after holding extensive hearings.The Delhi government had defended the scheme on the ground that it was for the poor who were being threatened by fair price shop owners to opt-out of the home delivery mode otherwise they would not be given ration. The AAP government had earlier stated that there was a ”complete misconception” that fair-price shops would cease to exist after the implementation of the scheme. It had said states like Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka's Bengaluru have identical doorstep delivery schemes. The Centre, represented by central government standing counsel Monika Arora, had opposed the Delhi government's doorstep ration delivery scheme, saying that the state could mitigate the architecture of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) while implementing it.It had earlier said the court should not allow any state government to interfere with the structure of NFSA and destroy its architecture and that FPS is an integral part of the Act. The Centre had explained that as per the NFSA, it gave food grains to states which have to take it from the godown of the Food Corporation of India to deliver it to the doorsteps of fair price shops for distributing it to the beneficiaries. The Supreme Court had on November 15, 2021, refused to entertain the Centre's plea against the Delhi high court order directing the AAP government not to stop or curtail the supply of foodgrains or flour to fair price shops. The high court had on September 27 last year directed the Delhi government to issue communications to all the fair price shop dealers informing them of the particulars of ration cardholders who have opted to receive their rations at doorsteps. It had said only thereafter that the fair price shops dealers were not required to be supplied with the ration of the PDS beneficiaries who have opted for the other scheme.—PTI

Washington: In a ground-breaking discovery that could help patients with unexplained liver and kidney problems, scientists have identified a new disease.Experts at Newcastle University, UK, have established the inherited condition, called TULP3-related ciliopathy that causes kidney and liver failure in children and adults.There are numerous reasons for kidney and liver organ failure, which if left untreated is life-threatening, but often patients do not get a precise diagnosis which can make their best course of treatment unclear.Faulty gene the catalystResearch, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, has revealed that a faulty gene is the catalyst for increased fibrosis in the liver and kidney, often resulting in the need for a transplant.Professor John Sayer, Deputy Dean of Clinical Medicine at Newcastle University, said: "Our finding has a huge implication for better diagnosis and management of kidney and liver disease in some patients."What we are now able to do is give some patients a precise diagnosis, which allows their treatment to be tailored to their needs for the best possible outcome."In the study, experts reviewed clinical symptoms, took liver biopsies and genetic sequencing from scores of patients, where a total of 15 patients from eight families were identified as having this new disease.Urine samples from these patients were used to grow cells in a laboratory and then investigated to determine the precise defect causing TULP3-related ciliopathy.Over half the patients in the study had a liver or kidney transplant as their condition had deteriorated significantly. In these patients the original cause for their organ failure was unknown until the study.Professor Sayer, who is a consultant nephrologist at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We were surprised at how many patients we were able to identify with TULP3-related ciliopathy and this would suggest that the condition is prevalent within those with liver and kidney failure."We hope to provide a proper diagnosis for many more families in the future. This work is a reminder that it is always worth investigating the underlying reasons for kidney or liver failure to get to the bottom of the condition."Finding a genetic cause of liver or kidney failure has huge implications for other family members, especially if they are wishing to donate a kidney to the patient."The work, co-funded by Kidney Research UK and the Northern Counties Kidney Research Fund, was possible through the Genomics England 100,000 Genomes project, where Professor Sayer has been instrumental in the local success of this project.The Newcastle experts will now work with cell lines taken from patients to study more in detail the disease process and to test potential treatments for TULP3-related ciliopathy.Patient case studyLiver transplant patient Linda Turnbull is leading a full and active life since she received her new organ almost 30 years ago. The barrister, from Stocksfield, Northumberland, UK, is part of the Newcastle University study and was one of the 15 patients identified as having the new condition, TULP3-related ciliopathy.Linda, who is in her 60s, was always an unwell child and things became worse when she started vomiting blood where, at the age of 11, tests diagnosed her with liver failure.She was treated successfully, but gradually her liver failed completely resulting in the need for a transplant in 1994. More recently she was noted to also have kidney failure.Linda provided urine samples for the study so her cells could be grown in the laboratory for the new disease to be understood more. Children with NAFLD have features of insulin resistance, a key characteristic of type 2 diabetes, and so may be at risk for developing the disease."There is a growing public health crisis as children with diabetes mature into adults with diabetes. We need to better understand how NAFLD contributes to type 2 diabetes risk in children so that we can actively work to prevent it," said Jeffrey Schwimmer, MD, professor of paediatrics at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and director of the Fatty Liver Clinic at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego.In a new study, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, a national team of researchers, led by senior author Schwimmer, provide hard numbers describing the connection between NAFLD and diabetes risk, finding that among 892 children with NAFLD enrolled in the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network, type 2 diabetes was present in 6.6 per cent of the children at initial assessment, with the incidence rate increasing 3 per cent annually over the next four years.By the end of the study, one in every six children had developed type 2 diabetes. "This is alarming because type 2 diabetes in youth is a much more aggressive disease than in adults, with more immediate and serious complications and outcomes," said Schwimmer.The authors also identified specific factors that increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in children with NAFLD: sex (females were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes), the severity of obesity and the amount of fat and scar tissue in the liver. "These findings have clinical implications for gastroenterologists caring for children with NAFLD," Schwimmer said. "Probe has been given to the ACP Cantonment who would record statements of both the victim and accused on Monday," he said.According to Kumar, he was asked to deliver an order at a house on Saturday evening.Kumar said that the buyer came out of the house and asked his name and caste. "On getting to know that I belonged to a Scheduled Caste, he used casteist remarks, saying he will not take the order from the hands of an untouchable. I told him to place order cancellation if he did not want to accept the order," Kumar alleged in his complaint to the police.He also alleged that the accused spat at his face and thrashed him with 10-12 persons, who came out of his house."They also took my motorcycle. I dialled the police control room, and a team reached the spot. The police helped me in getting back my motorcycle" he alleged in the FIR. Washington: Researchers have created a liquid biopsy test, which uses two circulating proteins, to test for major liver diseases. The test was found to be highly accurate, sensitive, and specific for both NASH and liver fibrosis.For the first time, a non-invasive test will allow for the determination of staging of both diseases without recurring invasive liver biopsy. The findings were published in the journal Gut.Non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH) is the most severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and is diagnosed in approximately 60 per cent of NAFLD patients. NASH puts people at risk of progressing to advanced liver diseases such as liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.NAFLD affects approximately 52 million people in Europe and 64 million people in the US, costing $138 billion annually to the European and US healthcare systems combined.Currently, NASH can only be diagnosed with invasive liver biopsy, which is the standard of diagnosis, but is expensive and has co-morbidities and complications. There is also no reliable blood (i.e. liquid biopsy) tests for the diseases because of low sensitivity and specificity. Current blood tests are also unable to reliably predict NASH and fibrosis staging.Professor Geltrude Mingrone, from King's College London and Catholic University of Rome, Italy, looked to find a more accurate liquid biopsy test.The paper, published in the leading journal Gut, identified two protein biomarkers, PLIN2 and RAB14, that were used as part of an algorithm to identify people with NASH and/or liver fibrosis. The ability of these proteins to detect NASH was tested in cohorts of people with either biopsy-confirmed NASH or liver fibrosis.The algorithms, which used A.I., gave impressive results, including the sensitivity of 88-95 per cent, a specificity of 90 per cent-100 per cent, and an overall accuracy of 92-93 per cent for NASH. For fibrosis, they were even better, with a sensitivity of 99 per cent-100 per cent, specificity of 90 per cent-96 per cent, and accuracy of 98 per cent-99 per cent. As well as being much more accurate than all other currently available biomarkers, it is now possible to predict the stages of the diseases without an invasive liver biopsy.Professor Geltrude Mingrone, from King's College London, said: "This blood test will allow to define the real prevalence of NASH in large and small populations, including children and adolescents, avoiding the need for invasive liver biopsy. Importantly, it will also allow to monitor the efficacy of NASH treatments over time, reducing screen failures and helping generate better drugs." These results show that the PLIN2/RAB14-based liquid biopsy can provide rapid and cost-effective testing to combat the growing epidemic of NASH and liver fibrosis. This will be an invaluable tool in diagnosing and monitoring cases of liver diseases, enabling people to receive earlier treatment.The authors also believe that the testing will allow for the improved capacity for researchers to study NASH and liver fibrosis in the general population, including disease progression, and record the effects of treatment, from lifestyle to surgical and pharmacological interventions. No NASH drug has been approved by the FDA or EMA due to the lack of an accurate, reliable, and non-invasive test. Between 65-73 per cent of patients that currently enroll in clinical trials for NASH-related therapies are found to be ineligible for the trial due to screen failure. The test - developed in collaboration with Metadeq Corp. - is expected to significantly reduce screen failures in clinical trials and improve the chances of new life-saving drugs reaching the market. —ANI

Washington: The findings of a new study have uncovered how essential the FOCAD gene is for maintaining a healthy liver, especially in children.
In a research study published in Nature Genetics, scientists have found that children carrying loss-of-function mutations in FOCAD are presented with an early onset, paediatric form of liver cirrhosis that can be life-threatening. The study was carried out by scientists from A*STAR's Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), in collaboration with hospitals and institutes across seven countries (India, USA, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Portugal, Brazil, and France).
Liver disease is becoming a major health concern and is estimated to be the fifth most common cause of death worldwide. A systematic review from the Global Burden of Disease Study identified 1.32 million deaths due to liver cirrhosis in 2017, accounting for more than two per cent of the total global deaths. Liver cirrhosis is usually diagnosed late in life, and is traditionally believed to be caused by environmental factors such as poor diet, viral hepatitis or alcohol abuse.
In collaboration with clinicians worldwide, the team combined classical tools such as Mendelian genetics and animal models with modern technology, such as deep sequencing and state-of-the-art gene editing tools to identify that the FOCAD gene is indispensable for maintaining liver health in humans. Mutations in this gene cause an early onset form of liver cirrhosis not documented before. The findings of a single gene, or monogenic, disorder that leads to cirrhosis in childhood establish a strong genetic component for liver disease, which was previously unknown.
In further analysis, they discovered that FOCAD functions as part of a molecular quality control mechanism that assists in translation, a fundamental cellular process by which proteins are made. The main cells of the liver, hepatocytes, were found to rely heavily on this mechanism compared to other cell types. This is the first time that this translation-dependent quality control machinery has been implicated in liver health.
The team also discovered a cytokine, CCL2, that is overproduced in FOCAD deficient patients and may play a key role in the progression of liver cirrhosis. Dr Ricardo Moreno Traspas, a postdoctoral fellow from the Laboratory of Human Genetics and Therapeutics at GIS, and first author of the study, explained, "FOCAD mutations lead to an overproduction of a number of proteins that may be key drivers in the progression of the disease. One example is the signalling mediator, CCL2, that attracts immune cells and promotes liver inflammation. Drugs that target this, or similar candidates, are potential therapeutic intervention points for cirrhotic patients."
Prof Bruno Reversade, Senior Group Leader at GIS and corresponding author of the study, commented, "We report the clinical impact of recessive loss-of-function variants in the FOCAD gene, and provide evidence for the importance of the SKI mRNA surveillance pathway for liver homeostasis. The research also brings forth the first animal model of the human disease, as well as in vitro biological systems that are now being used as platforms to identify and validate new anti-fibrotic therapeutic targets."
Prof Patrick Tan, Executive Director of GIS, said, "The knowledge and tools generated in this study have the potential to aid in the development of innovative therapies for more common forms of liver diseases such as fatty liver disease and liver cancer. Our clinical data will also help clinicians to identify new patients with this syndrome, better understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the disease, and hence, provide a more accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment." —ANI

The colleagues then went to buy a soft drink with the Rs 200 note that they were paid with. However, the shopkeeper told them it was torn and refused to accept it. The two immediately went back, knocked on Nadeem's door, and requested him to replace the note. However, Nadeem got angry and started abusing them. Soon, his brother came out and allegedly shot Sachin with a country-made pistol. After hearing the gunshot, a neighbour informed the police. SHO Pandey said, "Multiple teams were deployed in the area to nab the accused brothers. We recovered two country made pistols and multiple bullets from them. We have booked them under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 504 (intentional insult) of the Indian Penal Code, along with section 5/25 of the Arms Act. Both were sent to jail on Thursday."

Saka stepped up and fired his shot low into the net, sending the Emirates into ecstasy once more.
There were a few tense moments in the final ten minutes, but ultimately, it was a performance of great maturity and character that extended Arsenal's undefeated home record this season and, more importantly, returned them to the top of the Premier League table.
Arsenal now has 24 points after nine games, surpassing Manchester City (23) after a 24-hour break. Following their fourth loss of the season, Liverpool remained in tenth place with 10 points from eight matches.

Washington: Scientists have developed a new way of looking at sex-biased diseases that are rooted in evolutionary biology.
They theorize that males and females took opposing paths in a tradeoff between immunity and metabolism that occurs in the liver. This helped males fight bacterial infections from wounds received in dominance fights, while helping females store subcutaneous fat to survive when food is scarce.
Working in mice, the scientists delineate the activity of a signaling pathway that regulates lipids, storing fat in the liver in males and releasing it into the bloodstream in females. This pathway also responds to growth hormone.
This phenomenon may have shaped male biology in ways that hold risks in today's high calorie environment. The findings have particular relevance for fatty liver, which affects a quarter of the U.S. population. It is seen predominantly in men until women reach menopause.
"Scientists have only recently started to understand there are these profound differences between males and females," said Holly Ingraham, PhD, Herzstein Professor of Molecular Physiology at UCSF and co-senior author of the study, which appears Oct. 21, 2022, in Science. "Understanding these differences is going to be the key to unlocking therapeutics for sex-biased diseases. Fatty liver is one example."
The experiments found that male mice were three times more likely than females to survive infection with the bacteria E. coli. The females developed hyperlipidemia, a condition that is also seen in humans with severe sepsis. Lowering their lipid levels helped them to survive.
The investigators then examined how males and females respond to the contemporary environmental challenge of overeating by feeding the mice high-fat chow. Males developed fatty liver and glucose intolerance, which can lead to Type 2 diabetes, but females did not. This was true even when males and females gained a similar amount of weight.
Searching the literature for something that could explain this, the team identified a transcription factor called BCL6, which prevents the breakdown of fat in the liver and is much more present in male mice.
Deleting the gene for this protein eliminated liver fat in the males, and along with it their ability to survive the infection.
"The host defense programs in the liver are the predisposing factors that drive fatty liver in males," said Joni Nikkanen, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Cellular Molecular Pharmacology, who began the work with co-senior author Ajay Chawla, PhD, formerly of UCSF and now at Merck Research Labs.
"We have an evolutionary perspective on why such programs have developed -- because they protect males against bacterial infections," he said. "But in another context, these same programs are not good for you anymore, and you will develop more severe fatty liver."
The team also examined how the presence of BCL6 affected gene expression in the liver. This process begins at puberty when males produce more testosterone, and their pituitary glands start to secrete growth hormone in sharp peaks and valleys.
These intermittent bursts, likely regulated by testosterone, are important. When researchers infused male mice continuously with growth hormone the way it is secreted in females, BCL6 disappeared from their livers, and they lost the ability to fight E. coli infection.
The results point to growth hormone as a potential therapy for adults with fatty liver disease, an idea that is currently being tested. Its effects are already well established in children whose pituitaries don't produce enough growth hormone. Male children especially tend to develop fatty liver, but it goes away when they are given growth hormone to treat their short stature.
The work also expands the scientific view of how the body fights infection to include organs like the liver. "The fight is still between the infection and the immune system," said Omer Gokcumen, PhD, an evolutionary anthropologist at the University at Buffalo and a co-author of the study. "But the liver is determining the battlefield." —ANI

Lucknow (The Hawk): At the first referral units (FRUs) in Uttar Pradesh, deliveries will now be performed by doctors who are "on-call."
The state's Health Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, Brajesh Pathak, declared: "Caesarean section delivery facilities would soon be accessible at all FRUs. An anaesthetist will receive honoraria separately from doctors on call under the idea, and the doctor will only be called for deliveries.
Until recently, a delivery would only take place at a FRU if a gynaecologist was on site; otherwise, the patient would be transported to the district hospital.
The state has 417 FRUs, of which 149 have the resources to handle urgent situations, including gynaecological ones, but some units lack essential resources.
The family welfare director general has been directed to enhance the facilities. In Uttar Pradesh, there are 56 lakh deliveries annually.
The risk to the mother and child associated with needless travel to the district hospital will be reduced by the caesarean delivery facility at FRUs, according to senior gynaecologist Dr. Amita Shukla. Additionally, this will lessen the risk of maternal mortality brought on by delivery delay.
"Doctors at state-run FRUs will be asked to provide a letter of consent to work on-call," the chief medical officers of the districts have stated. "Specialists posted at rural FRUs will also be called to district hospitals for caesarean section deliveries."

Washington: A new artificial intelligence blood testing technology developed and used by researchers of Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center to successfully detect lung cancer in a 2021 study has now detected more than 80% of liver cancers in a new study of 724 people.
The findings were reported in Cancer Discovery and at the American Association for Cancer Research Special Conference: Precision Prevention, Early Detection, and Interception of Cancer.
The blood test, called DELFI (DNA evaluation of fragments for early interception) detects fragmentation changes among DNA from cancer cells shed into the bloodstream, known as cell-free DNA (cfDNA). In the most recent study, investigators used the DELFI technology on blood plasma samples obtained from 724 individuals in the U.S., the European Union (E.U.) and Hong Kong to detect hepatocellular cancer (HCC), a type of liver cancer.
The researchers believe this is the first genome-wide fragmentation analysis independently validated in two high-risk populations and across different racial and ethnic groups with different causes associated with their liver cancers.
It is estimated that 400 million people worldwide are at higher risk of developing HCC because of cirrhosis from chronic liver diseases including chronic viral hepatitis or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, according to a worldwide analysis of the burden of liver disease (J. Hepatology, 2019).
"Increased early detection of liver cancer could save lives, but currently available screening tests are underutilized and miss many cancers," says Victor Velculescu, M.D., Ph.D., professor of oncology and co-director of the Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics Program at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, who co-led the study with Zachariah Foda, M.D., Ph.D., gastroenterology fellow, Akshaya Annapragada, M.D./Ph.D. student, and Amy Kim, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Of the 724 plasma samples studied, 501 were collected in the U.S. and E.U. and included samples from 75 people with HCC to train and validate the machine learning model, a type of artificial intelligence that uses data and algorithms to improve accuracy, explains Foda. For validation, an additional 223 plasma samples were analyzed from individuals in Hong Kong and included samples from 90 people with HCC, 66 with hepatitis B virus (HBV), 35 with HBV-related liver cirrhosis and 32 people with no underlying risk factors.
The DELFI technology uses a blood test to measure the way DNA is packaged inside the nucleus of a cell by studying the size and amount of cell-free DNA present in the circulation from different regions across the genome. Healthy cells package DNA like a well-organized suitcase, in which different regions of the genome are placed carefully in various compartments. The nuclei of cancer cells, by contrast, are like more disorganized suitcases, with items from across the genome thrown in haphazardly. When cancer cells die, they release DNA fragments in a chaotic manner into the bloodstream.
DELFI identifies the presence of cancer by examining millions of cfDNA fragments for abnormal patterns, including the size and amount of DNA in different genomic regions. The DELFI approach only requires low-coverage sequencing, enabling this technology to be cost-effective in a screening setting, the researchers say.
In the latest study, researchers performed the test -- which was previously shown to accurately classify lung cancer -- on cfDNA fragments isolated from the plasma samples. They analyzed the patterns of fragmentation across each sample to develop a DELFI score.
Scores were low for cancer-free individuals with viral hepatitis or cirrhosis (median DELFI score was 0.078 and 0.080, respectively), but, on average, 5 to 10 times higher for the 75 HCC patients in the U.S./E.U. samples, with high scores observed across all cancer stages, including early-stage disease (DELFI scores for Stage 0 = 0.46, Stage A = 0.61, Stage B = 0.83, and Stage C = 0.92). In addition, the test detected fragmentation changes in the content and packaging of liver cancer genomes, including from genome regions associated with liver-specific activity.
The DELFI technology detected liver cancers at their earliest stages, with an overall sensitivity -- or ability to accurately detect a cancer -- of 88% and a specificity of 98%, which means it almost never incorrectly provided a false positive result, among people at average risk. In samples collected from those at high risk of HCC, the test had 85% sensitivity and 80% specificity.
"Currently, less than 20% of the high-risk population get screened for liver cancer due to accessibility and suboptimal test performance. This new blood test can double the number of liver cancer cases detected, compared to the standard blood test available, and increase early cancer detection," says Kim, co-senior author on the study.
The researchers said next steps include validating this approach in larger studies for clinical use.
More than 800,000 people are diagnosed with liver cancer worldwide each year, and it is a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, according to the American Cancer Society.

Hyderabad (The Hawk): At the KIMS hospital in Hyderabad, medical professionals performed a liver and kidney transplant on a 50-year-old patient for the first time in India. Her liver weighed 12 kg.
A group of reputable surgeons, including three liver transplant surgeons and a kidney transplant specialist, carried out simultaneous liver and kidney transplantations.
The surgery was carried out in the first week of November, the hospital revealed on Thursday.
Usha Agarwal, a homemaker from Siliguri in West Bengal, is the patient whose life was saved and who has been returned to normalcy.
Doctors claimed that her liver was so colossal that it took up her entire abdomen and displaced her intestines. A healthy liver weighs little more than 1.5 kg and is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen.
She had a hernia, a big liver, ascites in her abdomen, and it was difficult for her to move. In 2019, when she first felt heavy, she was encouraged to get a transplant.
Cysts (fluid-filled cavities) arise in the kidneys and liver as a result of gene abnormalities in polycystic liver and kidney disease, according to Dr. Ravichand Siddachari, Consultant and Chief of Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery. No symptoms appear in the patients till they are in their 30s. They start to experience the symptoms as the cysts enlarge. They have the potential to get extremely large, and the resultant buildup of water in the belly can cause breathing issues and hernias. As their kidney functions deteriorate, they might require dialysis. All of these symptoms were present in this patient, with the exception of a large, ruptured hernia.
"Unsurprisingly, given that the liver had taken up the entire abdomen, it was one of the trickiest procedures to perform. Detaching the liver from its connections while preserving the vital organs needed for transplantation was a difficult feat. But we were able to successfully transplant a fresh liver. Dr. Uma Maheshwara Rao, Consultant Urologist and Renal transplant surgeon, revealed that the replacement kidney was implanted through the same cut after making a pouch in the belly (usually, another cut is required for a kidney transplant).
The fact that the patient had healed well and had been released from the hospital pleased the doctors who had carried out two uncommon transplantations on that person on the same day.
It was one of the most fulfilling operations because it not only saved the patient's life but also enabled her to finally be free of all physical and emotional pain and suffering. Without any issues, she can start carrying out ordinary tasks, they stated.

During the campaign, several Ministries were able to completely dispose of the target "According to an official, the campaign's scale was 16 times greater than that of the Special Campaign of 2021, and it garnered four billion impressions and nine lakh social media engagements.

Washington: According to recent findings, glass frogs, which are famed for their remarkably transparent muscles and undersides, carry out their "disappearing actions" by stashing almost all of their red blood cells in their distinctively reflective livers.
The study conducted by researchers at Duke University and the American Museum of Natural History is being published in Science on Friday. The study may open up new directions in the breakdown of blood clots, which frogs manage to avoid by storing and releasing around 90 per cent of their red blood cells into their livers on a regular basis.
"There are more than 150 species of known glass frogs in the world, and yet we're really just starting to learn about some of the really incredible ways they interact with their environment," said co-lead author Jesse Delia, a Gerstner postdoctoral fellow in the Museum's Department of Herpetology.
Glass frogs, which live in the American tropics, are nocturnal amphibians that spend their days sleeping upside down on translucent leaves that match the colour of their backs -- a common camouflage tactic. Their tummies, however, show something surprising: translucent skin and muscle that allows their bones and organs to be visible, giving the glass frog its common name.
Recent research has proposed that this adaptation masks the frogs' outlines on their leafy perches, making them harder for predators to spot. Transparency is a common form of camouflage among animals that live in water, but it's rare on land. In vertebrates, attaining transparency is difficult because their circulatory system is full of red blood cells that interact with light. Studies have shown that ice fish and larval eels achieve transparency by not producing haemoglobin and red blood cells. But glass frogs use an alternative strategy, according to the findings of the new study.
"Glassfrogs overcome this challenge by essentially hiding red blood cells from view," said Carlos Taboada, the study's co-lead author from Duke University. "They almost pause their respiratory system during the day, even at high temperatures." At Duke, the researchers used a technique called photoacoustic imaging, which uses light to induce sound-wave propagation from red blood cells. This allows researchers to map the location of the cells within sleeping frogs without restraint, contrast agents, sacrifice, or surgical manipulation -- particularly important to this study because glass frog transparency is disrupted by activity, stress, anaesthesia, and death.
The researchers focused on one particular species of glass frog, Hyalinobatrachium Fleischmann. They found that resting glass frogs increase transparency two- to threefold by removing nearly 90 per cent of their red blood cells from circulation and packing them within their liver, which contains reflective guanine crystals. Whenever the frogs need to become active again, they bring the red blood cells back into the blood, which gives the frogs the ability to move around -- at which point, light absorption from these cells breaks transparency.
In most vertebrates, aggregating red blood cells can lead to potentially dangerous blood clots in veins and arteries. But glass frogs don't experience clotting, which raises a set of significant questions for biological and medical researchers.
"This is the first of a series of studies documenting the physiology of vertebrate transparency, and it will hopefully stimulate biomedical work to translate these frogs' extreme physiology into novel targets for human health and medicine," Delia said. —ANI
