Chennai (The Hawk): The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, has been asked to submit a report regarding the racial incident involving first-year MBBS students to the Tamil Nadu Medical University.
Seven senior students have received suspensions thus far.
Following media reports on the suspected ragging of first-year students, university registrar Dr. Ashwath Narayan requested a report from the college.
Notably, despite the Vellore police and Chief Minister's Office being mentioned in the tweet that first exposed the ragging incidence, no FIR has yet been filed against the ragging offenders.
Seven senior students were suspended as a result of their suspected involvement in the ragging, Dr. Solomon Satheesh told the media.
Following an internal investigation, a college-created internal inquiry commission suspended the students. The college has yet to report the incident to the police, though.
After the ragging event went viral, the prominent college attracted media attention. Male college students were forced to walk while still wearing their underpants while being doused with water from a nearby house.

Chennai (The Hawk): The schools and colleges in Chennai and five other districts in Tamil Nadu will be closed on Friday and Saturday because heavy rain is expected.
After the IMD predicted that it would rain a lot, schools in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, and Ranipet were given the day off.
The weather service has also issued a red alert for November 11 for the districts of Ranipet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram. On November 12, Dindigul, Theni, and The Nilgiris were given a Red alert. In the next 24 hours, this will happen because of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
Some places in these districts are likely to get heavy to very heavy or even extremely heavy rain on November 11 and 12.
In the next 48 hours, there are likely to be thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to very heavy rains in and around Chennai. In the next 48 hours, the city has been given an orange alert.
In a related event, the water from Chembarambakkam lake has been let out, flooding several suburbs of Chennai, such as Iyyappanthangal, Porur, and Mangad.
Since more rain is expected, officials in the Kancheepuram district said that water could not be pumped out and that water would eventually drain out.
When it rains in the district, activists and social workers said that this happens all the time. R. Balakrishnan, a Porur activist and social worker, told IANS, "This is becoming routine, and even though many requests and petitions have been sent, nothing has happened to widen the canals that connect to the Porur lake."

Chennai: Amid concerns over rising Covid-19 cases in the state, the Tamil Nadu health department has issued an alert to contain the spreading virus.

On Tuesday, the number of fresh infections rose to 13, which was almost double the previous day's figure.

While three persons in Chennai and two in Coimbatore tested positive for Covid-19, one each tested positive in Chengalpattu, Salem, the Nilgiris, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Vellore as per the Directorate of Public Health , Tamil Nadu.

Two persons who arrived at Chennai from UAE and Singapore also tested positive.

The state public health department has directed the district health officers to tighten its vigil.

However, 16 persons recovered from the disease on Tuesday and presently 89 are under treatment.

No casualties were reported in the state due to Covid-19.

State Health Minister, Ma Subramanian while speaking to IANS said, "There is no need to worry but we are being cautious. An alert has been issued to all the district health officers for any symptoms of the cases. We are well equipped." IANS

Viswanathan presided over the convocation. In his convocation address, General Dr. V.K. Singh said, “There is no shortcut to success, though it is written in books. Singh to use his good offices to influence the Centre and State Governments to spend more on higher education and compete with advanced countries. “The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), which is 27 per cent in India needs to enhanced further and government spending on research activities should be increased,” he said, adding that the GER in the US was 88 per cent, Germany 70, China 64 and South Korea and Australia 100 per cent each. “Lack of funding by the central and state governments and too many controls on educational institutions are posing hurdles,” Dr. Viswanathan said. Wipro's Global Head of Business Operations Mr. Sanjeev Jain, VIT Vice-Presidents Mr. Sankar Viswanathan, Dr. G.V. Selvam and Assistant Vice-President Ms. Kadhambari S. Viswanathan also took part in the convocation. Totally, 8,619 undergraduates and postgraduates, besides 278 research scholars, from the class of 2023 were awarded degrees during the convocation.

Chennai: Seven people were killed in a road accident in the early hours of Monday.
The accident occurred when the minivan in which they were travelling rammed into a lorry that was parked on the road.&nbsp;
Police sources in Tiruppatur told IANS that there were ten people in the van and seven died on the spot and three others were admitted to a hospital.
The dead were identified to be from Onankutti village in Vellore district.
Police said that further details, including the names, will be informed later.

Seven killed as minivan rams into lorry in TN

Chennai: At least 2,500 policemen, including SPs, have been deployed in Vellore for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's visit to the city on Sunday. The Chief Minister will travel in a train from MG Ramachandran Chennai Central railway station to Katpadi, Vellore.
On Sunday morning, Stalin will pay a floral tribute at the statue of EV Ramaswamy Periyar, the Dravidian ideologue, on his 145th birth anniversary.
He will then visit the Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camp in Melmanavaoor village and launch the allotment of free houses for Sri Lankan Tamils in the state.
This is the first phase of allotment of free houses.
Stalin had launched the project in Vellore in November 2021.
A total of 1,591 beneficaries will be allotted free houses on Sunday for Sri Lankan Tamils staying in 19 rehabilitation camps in 13 districts in a total 3,519 free houses in the first phase of the scheme.
The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) is the implementing agency of the project.
Stalin will also participate in the birth centenary celebrations of late Chief Minister, K. Karunanidhi and will attend a public function.
Police officials told IANS that the venue is away from the main town of Vellore and hence there will be less traffic snarls.

2,500 cops deployed in Vellore for Stalin's visit

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police have announced a no-fly zone in some areas of Vellore district where Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will be visiting.
The Superintendent of Police, Vellore in a statement said that the areas covered under the no- fly zone include the new bus terminus on Katpadi road, Old corporation office where the statue of Dravidian ideologue EVS Ramasamy Periyar is located which will be garlanded by the Chief Minister, Melmanavoor village (Sri Lankan rehabilitation camp) on Chennai- Bengaluru highway.
Stalin will also visit the Kandaneri village where the Chief Minister will take part in the birth centenary celebrations of former CM and his father Kalaignar Karunanidhi. This area will also be under no-fly zone, said the police.
The statement of the Superintendent of Police prevents any kind of aviation device, including UAVs or drones in these areas with immediate effect.
"Anyone who violates the order will be subjected to punishment," the statement said.
As part of the visit of the Chief Minister, traffic regulations are also put in place.
