Rio de Janeiro: At least 37 people were killed and about 5,000 others displaced in northeastern Brazil due to heavy rains, authorities have said.Recife City, the capital of northeastern Pernambuco State, is the most affected by the rains, where 35 people died and about 1,000 others fled their home, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the local Civil Defense.In Alagoas State, two people were killed in the rains, with more than 4,000 residents evacuated.Meanwhile, secondary disasters triggered by the heavy rainfall also caused casualties. On Saturday, 20 people were killed in a landslide in Recife, while six others died in another landslide in the nearby city of Camaragibe.According to the Pernambuco Water and Climate Agency, Recife recorded 150 mm of precipitation on Saturday, while Camaragibe registered 129 mm.—IANS

In April, the IMD had said the country would receive normal rainfall -- 99 per cent of the long period average (LPA), which is the mean rainfall received over a 50-year-period from 1971-2020. The LPA for the entire country is 87 cm.The monsoon core zone - states ranging from Gujarat to Odisha that are dependent on rainfall for agriculture - is set to experience above normal rainfall at more than 106 per cent of the long period average, Mohapatra said. He said central India and south peninsula are set to receive above normal rainfall, while north-east and north-west regions are likely to get normal rains.This is the fourth consecutive year that India is likely to experience a normal monsoon. Earlier, India had witnessed normal monsoon from 2005-08 and 2010-13. Mohapatra said in the near future, India could witness normal monsoons as the decadal epoch of below normal rains was nearing its end. "We are now moving towards a normal monsoon epoch," he said.Asked about the criticism faced by IMD for "hasty" declaration of monsoon onset over Kerala, Mohapatra said the weather office followed a scientific process to announce the onset and progress of monsoon. He asserted that 70 per cent of the weather stations in Kerala had reported fairly widespread rainfall and other parameters related to strong westerly winds and cloud formation over the region were fulfilled. Mohapatra said the prevailing La Nina conditions, which refer to the cooling of the equatorial Pacific region, were expected to continue till August and augur well for the monsoon rains in India. However, the possibility of development of negative Indian Ocean Dipole, which refers to cooler than normal sea surface temperatures in the western Indian Ocean, could lead to below normal rainfall in extreme southwestern peninsula that includes Kerala.Most parts of the country, barring J&amp;K, Ladakh, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh, are expected to experience below normal maximum temperatures in June, Mohapatra said.—PTI

New Delhi: Three days after the devastating Amarnath Yatra tragedy in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the top official from the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) on Monday said there is no science to predict such highly localized events.At least 17 people were killed, and several others suspected to be washed away at the holy cave shrine of Amarnath on Friday evening due to a flash flood as a result of heavy rainfall around the holy cave. The authorities had stopped the Yatra in the wake of the disaster and it was resumed only on Monday.While the Jammu &amp; Kashmir authorities and much of the media continued to blame the tragic incident on a cloudburst near the cave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said it was a highly localized extreme rainfall event. As per the IMD, a ?cloudburst' is one where there is 100 mm rainfall in just one hour. As per the data from the automatic weather station (AWS) at the holy cave, there was no rainfall from 8.30 a.m. till 4.30 p.m. and only 31 mm rainfall between 4.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. Clarifying that cloudburst is a definition decided by the scientists, MoES Secretary M Ravichandran told media persons that 100 mm or not, heavy rainfall events are set to increase not just at Amarnath but in other parts of the country too owing to the changing climatic conditions."(However), we need to observe and understand these types of processes. For that we don't have sufficient understanding. Isolated localised heavy rainfall less than a few kms are very difficult to predict, we don't have science to predict it," Ravichandran said. "The extreme is maximum; now the extreme itself has shifted to further extreme. So, we need to define heavy rainfall, extremely heavy rainfall and such various criterion again. The light rains are no more (happening)," he said. He added that the science to predict such highly localized high rainfall events is not available in any country. —IANS

Idukki: Farmers in Kerala are growing increasingly dependent on irrigation to grow paddy -- despite the state receiving an average annual rainfall of 3,610.2 mm in 2021, far higher than the state average of 2,924.7 mm."Earlier, when labour wasn't too expensive, paddy could be harvested twice a year. But by 2008, everyone around us began to level their fields to grow tubers and other perennial trees. We couldn't because the new law (Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetland Act 2008) prevented us from converting our land. By then, the landscape around us had already changed, and we were unable to grow paddy anymore," says Pothanmaanayil Joseph, a farmer from Pothy, Kottayam district who now grows grass with his cousins on three acres.While the landscape change keeps their fields flooded during the monsoon, the surrounding canals carry too little water post monsoon, making paddy cultivation impossible throughout the year."Years later, if government irrigation projects reach our village, we may be able to resume paddy cultivation," Joseph adds.Government irrigation projects haven't reached Elamdesam panchayat in Idukki either. But unlike Joseph, VS Kareem says his fellow paddy farmers irrigate their farm with water from their nearby pond."If the November rains falter, we have to look for irrigation sources. In 2019, we incurred losses because we had to hire diesel-run motors to irrigate our fields, which are more expensive than electric motors," says Kareem, who only cultivates paddy once a year. Irrigation a necessity due to erratic climateThe sixth assessment report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted an overall rise in demand for irrigation water by 2080, causing a further decline in rain-fed agriculture.According to 2019-20 Kerala agriculture statistics, 75.69 per cent of the paddy grown in the state was irrigated. This loss in rain-fed paddy cultivation is evident all through the three paddy seasons in Kerala -- autumn (April-May to September-October), winter (September-October to December-January) and summer (December-January to March-April).In 2005-06, the rain-fed paddy cultivated in autumn and winter were 79.8 per cent and 22.5 per cent, respectively, which dropped to 68.7 per cent and 4 per cent. Only summer rain-fed paddy recorded a slight rise from 0.08 per cent in 2005-06 to 0.16 per cent in 2019-20.Some 120km to the west of Idukki, farmers had requested for irrigation to grow Pokkali rice, a highly rain-dependent paddy crop. The rising salinity in the coasts post monsoon limits paddy cultivation to just the rainy season, when the downpour lowers the salinity of the land."Although we lost around 15 per cent of our rice to post harvest moisture, we are still happy with this year's (2021) produce," says KA Thomas, who suffered losses in 2019 and 2020 due to dry spells. Fearing similar losses in the future, Thomas and his fellow Pokkali farmers of Kadamakudy in Ernakulam district had requested for irrigation."Due to erratic rains and frequent dry spells, rain dependent paddy cultivation is nearly impossible in Kerala. Paddy requires 100 per cent soil moisture. It is difficult to revive paddy if the soil loses even 10 per cent to 20 per cent of its moisture," says Babu Mathew, a retired irrigation officer.Can irrigation prevent food insecurity?Despite Kerala spending Rs 9,645.7 million on irrigation till 1990-91, exclusively to boost its paddy cultivation and attain self-sufficiency in food supply, paddy produce declined steadily. Ironically, despite the annual expenditure on irrigation, several traditionally irrigated paddy farms that relied on natural canals and ponds have either been lying fallow or converted to grow other crops. In 2020-21, current fallow constituted 54,255.40 hectares and fallow other than current fallow accounted for 42,751.70 hectares."As much as 70 per cent of the fallow land you see today is forced fallow," says Mathew.Irrigation projects were meant to raise paddy production to 2.1 million to 2.7 million tonnes annually, but in 2019-20, Kerala could only produce 500,000 tonnes of rice, while importing the rest from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The IPCC report further estimates a 10 per cent to 30 per cent drop in rice production in India if the global temperature rises between 1 degree Celsius to 4 degree Celsius.A thesis submitted by Basil Abraham, a research scholar from Kerala Agriculture University, Thrissur, predicts a further rise in irrigation needs through all cropping seasons in the future. The research placed special emphasis on Thrissur, which has the state's second largest area under summer paddy.The study also predicts a severe decline in rainfall in the coming years, which would raise the requirement for irrigation water by 200 billion litres to grow winter paddy and about 750 billion litres for summer paddy in Thrissur district.The future of riceWhile investing in irrigation may not be able to protect Kerala from food insecurity in the future, farmers and scientists have found different ways to grow paddy using much less water."In China, paddy is cultivated using drip irrigation. With proper technology, aerobic rice can be grown by ensuring that the ground is wet," says Mathew, the retired irrigation officer."We tested the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) on several farms in Palakkad district; those farmers still grow paddy using this method. But other farmers (ones who practice traditional paddy cultivation methods) are unwilling to try SRI due to lack of schemes," says Dr Karthikeyan, a scientific staffer at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pattambi."An acre of paddy can yield up to 2,800kg using the SRI method, while the traditional anaerobic cultivation means can only produce between 1,600kg and 1,700kg," says P.K. Thankappan, a decade-old SRI convert in Palakkad. "But unlike the traditional methods, SRI doesn't require the fields to remain flooded throughout the cultivation period, which results in rampant weed growth. It's also difficult to find labourers for this method."Moreover, a closer look at the agriculture statistics report comparing 2008-09 to 2019-20 reveals that it's the high-yielding varieties that demand more irrigation than the local varieties."If the local variety is cultivated scientifically, not only can it produce yield on par with high-yielding varieties, it also reduces the water required to grow paddy," says Natarajan K., a retired agriculture officer who has been successfully cultivating a variety of local paddy in Palakkad on his 2 acres. "I've never lost paddy to rains, except in the 2018 deluge," says P. Bhuvaneshwari, a 62-year-old 2022 Karshakasree winner from Palakkad.While her neighbours only grow paddy once a year, she still grows autumn and winter paddy. Around 12 years ago, she began with less than an acre of paddy farm. Today, her field spreads over 10 acres. She believes her chemical-free farming and rich soil biodiversity may have been preventing such losses.—IANS

Jaipur:&nbsp;Light to Moderate rainfall occurred at some places in Rajasthan in 24 hours while heavy showers lashed isolated pockets of the state, the Meteorological (MeT) department said on Thursday. According to the MeT department, isolated places in Pratapgarh and Pali districts received heavy rainfall from the 24-hour period ending 8.30 am on Thursday. A maximum of 9.6 cm rainfall occurred in Rani (Pali) followed by Pratapgarh where 7 cm rains were received. Rashmi (Chittorgarh), Vijay Nagar, Jawaja (both in Ajmer) recorded 5 cm rainfall and several other places received below 5 cm rains during the period. An official of the MeT department said the monsoon will remain active for the next four or five days during which light to moderate rains would occur at most places and heavy rains at isolated places in the state.—PTI

Shimla: Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has increased the water level in the Bhakra and Pong dams, officials said on Tuesday. This time both the dams are brimming with water compared to last year but still short of water to reach the maximum limit.
Both the dams serve the irrigation requirements of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
"The water level in the Bhakra dam's Gobind Sagar reservoir and the Pong dam reservoir stood at 1,642 feet and 1,362 feet, respectively, on Tuesday," an official of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), which manages both the dams built on the Punjab-Himachal border, told IANS.
The official added that the water levels in Bhakra dam and Pong dam were 1,614 feet and 1,335 feet, respectively, the same day last year.
However, the water level in Bhakra dam is still 38 feet below the maximum capacity, while it is 28 feet less than the upper limit in Pong dam reservoir.
Authorities said the water level in both the dams was higher this year compared to the previous year as the southwest monsoon largely remained intensified over Himachal Pradesh. "Now the water is at a comfortable level to sufficiently fulfill the irrigation requirements downstream," an official associated with water regulation added.
The official said inflow in the Bhakra dam was 62,700 cusecs and in Pong it was 84,100 cusecs, which was normal. In days, the inflow will decline with the rainfall intensity subdued.
The filling season of the two dams is likely to end by mid of September.
While the Bhakra Dam is built on the Sutlej river, the Pong Dam is on the Beas river.
One of the largest man-made wetlands in northern India, the Pong dam reservoir is spread over an area of 41 km with a maximum width of 19 km in Himachal Pradesh. It came into existence after the construction of the dam on the Beas river in 1975.
The Bhakra project is a marvel in engineering. The 225.55 m high dam is of concrete straight gravity type having a gross storage capacity of 9,621 million cubic metre.&nbsp;

Jaipur: Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in several parts of Rajasthan forcing schools in Kota, Jhalawar and Tonk districts to declare holidays.
The Meteorological (MeT) officials on Tuesday morning confirmed that Jhalawad district registered extremely heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, which was 284 mm in Dag Tehsil. Kota registered a very heavy rainfall of 126 mm in the last 24 hours. Chittorgarh and Bhilwara recorded very heavy rainfall of 184 mm and 160 mm.
Pratapgarh district also recorded a rainfall of 258 mm in the last 24 hours, which as per the MeT department was extremely heavy.
Schools, both government and private, have declared holidays in Kota and remained closed for the second day on Tuesday.
A two-day holiday was declared in Jhalawar on Monday itself in wake of heavy rainfall.
In Tonk district also, schools declared a holiday on Tuesday. In Baran district of Kota division, orders have been issued to keep all schools shut for two days on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Due to heavy rain in Kota division, there was a flood-like situation and continuous rain has become a worry in Bundi, Baran and Jhalawar districts too.
Rescue teams were working to bring the victims to safer places.
In Kota on Monday, rescue teams took hundreds of people out of danger areas and shifted them to safer places. Food packets were also being delivered to the people surrounded by water. There has been an outcry due to rain in Hadoti division.
At the same time, rain has wreaked havoc in Tonk district as well. The inflow of water into the Bisalpur dam has intensified and the water level of Bisalpur dam has reached 313.57 RL meters. The total filling capacity of the dam is 315.50 RL metres. Drinking water is supplied from this dam to Ajmer and Tonk and the capital Jaipur also.&nbsp;

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department on Friday issued a yellow alert for rainfall in the national capital and cautioned the citizens about the same.
The yellow alert is issued after Delhi and its adjacent areas witnessed torrential rainfall for a second consecutive day on Thursday alerting the citizens to be prepared for the next two-three days.
This heavy downpour resulted in waterlogging at very places in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
The water logging and heavy rainfall had further brought the transport life in the city to a halt and resulted in massive traffic jams across several places in the region.
Meanwhile, senior scientist of IMD, RK Jenamani also informed about an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand for the upcoming two days.
"Orange alert for very heavy rainfall issued for Uttarakhand from 23rd to 25th Sept. Rain is expected to increase over western UP tomorrow," said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.
The weather forecasting agency in its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulleting by the IMD this morning said, "a western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies run roughly, under whose influence, the current spell of rainfall is likely to continue over northwest India for next few days followed by a reduction thereafter."
It informed that a widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls is also expected to occur over Madhya Pradesh and Haryana today.
"Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Madhya Pradesh and Haryana on 23rd; Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh during 23rd-25th; East Uttar Pradesh during 23rd,25th and 26th September and over East Rajasthan on 23rs &amp; 24th September 2022."
Isolated very heavy rainfall is also expected over West Uttar Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya today, it added.
It further informed about the expectation for widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms or lightning over Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday.
The IMD also informed that the lowest minimum temperature of 20.8 degrees Celcius was reported on Thursday at Ridge (Delhi) over the plains while the maximum temperature was "marked below normal (-5.1 degree Celcius of less) at most places over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Earlier on Thursday, an incessant spell of light to moderate rain drenched the national capital for the second consecutive day.
The rainfall led to waterlogging and uprooting of trees that caused massive traffic snarls in many parts of the capital. Following this, pedestrians were compelled to walk through severely inundated lanes and main roads. —ANI

According to a report published earlier this year, the Gujarat government has created an action plan for combating climate change for the districts of Ahmedabad and Rajkot in collaboration with the Vasudha Foundation and other organisations.
According to the report's conclusions, "Since 2005, emissions from the energy sector have climbed by 71.32 percent, those from the water sector have increased by 7.06 percent, and emissions from the greenhouse gas sector have increased by 78%. By 2030, emissions are anticipated to increase by 96% under the status quo."
Rini Dutt, the primary author of the action plan study, and others have underlined that the impact of climate change is anticipated to result in an increase in rainfall of 8 to 17% in Ahmedabad and 10 to 12% in Rajkot. In Ahmedabad and Rajkot, there will be more rainy days in July and August.
According to the report, both cities will see more heat in the next years. Recent years have seen a 10% increase in warm days in Rajkot and an 8–10% increase in warm days in Ahmedabad.
According to Dutt and Manjusha Mukherjee's projection, the number of warm days will rise by 53% in Rajkot and 45% in Ahmedabad during the next few years. The number of cold days will decline in both cities.
In Ahmedabad district, which makes only 4% of the state's population, urban regions are home to up to 84 percent of the people. As a result, the built-up area has dramatically increased, from 140 sq km in 1990 to 212 sq km in 2017. Forest and agricultural land are being devoured by the growing urban region.
Due to climate change, Ahmedabad will have more rainy days in July and August while experiencing hotter summers. The average maximum temperature in 2030 is predicted to be 41.8 degrees Celsius in May, 40.2 degrees Celsius in April, and 36.8 degrees Celsius in March.
Experts have advised Ahmedabad district to expand its forest cover to 7% over the next ten years in order to avoid 8.47 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Currently, the district has 1.62 percent of its land covered in forest.
The district administrations and municipal corporations in Ahmedabad/Rajkot must reuse 100% of home waste water after proper treatment in both urban and rural areas if they are to face the climate challenges.
Sewage Treatment Plants experts have recommended switching from anaerobic to purely aerobic water treatment methods (STPs).
The paper also recommended moving toward vertical urban expansion, which will allow for more people per square metre while simultaneously preventing the loss of open space and agricultural land.

Rainfall is also predicted to have an impact on the southern districts of Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramnagar, and Bengaluru Rural. The central districts of Davanagere and Chitradurga will also be battered by the rain.

Due to the persistent and heavy rain, the government has declared a vacation for Monday for the districts of Kolar and Chikkaballapur. In the meantime, Bengaluru's cold and rainy weather was making a lot of kids ill.

New Delhi (The Hawk): Regions surrounding northern Bay of Bengal (BoB) received higher precipitation than the other parts of India for the last 10200 years, says a new study that traced the dynamics of Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) over the 10000 years – a period which witnessed the development and fall of numerous ancient civilizations around the world, many of which were associated with climate instability. The study can help understand long-term trends of climate change impacts on the ecosystems and may help mitigate future climate extremities.
Agriculture in India is heavily dependent on the Indian Summer Monsoon rains (ISMR). The Bengal Basin or the ‘Bengal region’ being located at the trajectory of the Bay of Bengal (BoB) branch of the ISM is very sensitive to changes in the ISM strength. Even a minor change in ISM strength may have adverse effects on the agrarian-based socioeconomic conditions of the region. However, no systematic long-term record (beyond the range of instrumental period) for the past ISM variability in the region was available.
BSIP, an autonomous institute of Department of Science and Technology (DST), for the first time, reconstructed the history of the ISM variability from this region by using both biotic and abiotic proxies that predates instrumental records (records taken before 19th Century). In the hydro-climatic history of the last 10.2 ka (10,200 years) of the Bengal region published in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, a team of scientists show that a heavy ISMR was witnessed during 10.2 – 5.6 ka by this region and the ISMR decreased since 4.3 ka. The ISM again got strengthened between 3.7 and 2.1 ka following which it switched to a drier mode for some time. The ISM regained its strength during 0.2–0.1 ka. Of the weakened phases, weakening around 4.3 ka was the most severe one, and had adverse impact of the ecosystem.
The scientists collected sediment samples from the bed of a dried lake from the northern part of the Bengal Basin and standard techniques were followed for building the age-depth model of sedimentary sequence and measuring different palaeo- climatological parameters. They also compared the proxy-based results with a few palaeo-model outputs from the Palaeo Modelling experiments for different time spans to validate the results of this study. The numerical models provided insights into the spatio- temporal dimensions of climate change and helped analyse the dynamic relations between different climatic components under specific boundary conditions. Combining these datasets, they investigated the timing, regional coherence and causes of Holocene ISM variability in the Bengal region.
They explored the drivers influencing the variability of the monsoon in the Indian part of the Bengal Basin and found that while the millennial-scale variations in the ISM rainfall may largely be attributed to changes in solar insolation and dynamics of Inter tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ-- area where the northeast and the southeast trade winds converge), the centennial scale variations may be collectively triggered by phenomena like North Atlantic Oscillation, El Nino Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole.
Focusing on monsoonal variability in the Indian part of the Bengal Basin, the scientists combined both biotic (phytoliths, NPPs and stable carbon isotopes) and abiotic (environmental magnetic parameters, and grain size data) proxy data to understand the ecosystem response to past hydroclimatic changes. They inferred that changes in Lake Ecosystem were strongly influenced by the ISM rainfall.

Rudraprayag : After two weeks of rainfall and snowfall, Kedarnath Yatra in Uttarkhand, which was halted due to inclement weather resumed on Thursday.
Following continuous snowfall and bad weather, the registration of pilgrims for Kedarnath had got suspended on Wednesday.
"Due to bad weather and snowfall in Kedarnath, the registration of pilgrims for Kedarnath has been stopped till tomorrow May 3. The decision regarding registration will be taken keeping in view the weather conditions," Mayur Dixit, Rudraprayag District Magistrate (DM) said.
On Monday, the Meteorological Department had issued an alert of rain and snowfall in the high Himalayan regions for the next two to three days.
Rudraprayag District Magistrate Mayur Dixit said that an appeal has been made for the safety of the pilgrims coming to visit Kedarnath Dham. The Kedarnath temple is one of the most revered temples in the country dedicated to Lord Shiva and people from across the country visit the temple during the six months when the temple is open.

Yangon: A town in central Myanmar experienced its heaviest single-day rainfall in 58 years on Saturday, according to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
The Nyaung-U town in central Myanmar's Mandalay region logged its heaviest rainfall in 58 years, with 161 mm recorded on Saturday, compared to the figure of 121 mm in May 2018, the weather bureau said.
It's now raining in nearly all parts of the country due to Cyclone Mocha, and rains or thundershowers will also continue in most parts of the country until Sunday afternoon, according to the weather bureau as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.
Cyclone Mocha, which is heading towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts, is predicted to make landfall on Sunday, with a speed of up to 120 mph and a storm surge of up to 14 feet (about 4.26 metre) in western Myanmar's Rakhine state, the weather bureau said on Saturday afternoon.

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand State Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Wednesday and a yellow alert for June 1, following continuous rainfall in Uttarkashi since Tuesday night, officials said.
"The Meteorological Department has issued Orange Alert for May 31, 2023, and Yellow Alert for June 1, 2023, following rainfall in Uttarkashi," Uttarkashi Police Uttarakhand tweeted.
The Police have also issued an advisory and asked all the pilgrims to stay in safe places.
"Pilgrims please stay at safe places, do not travel unnecessarily, and park vehicles at safe places, landslides/geo. Travel only when the weather is clear," they added. "All the devotees coming for Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham Yatra are requested to plan their journey after taking the weather forecast, keep rain cover, umbrella and woolen/warm clothes with them during the journey," they added.
The IMD on Monday issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand where it predicted rain and hailstorm in higher reaches of the state and rain and thunder in the plains of it.
The Meteorological Department predicted rain in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag and light rain in Bageshwar, Almora and Pithoragarh. The Meteorological Department has also issued a warning of gusty winds blowing at a speed of 70 km. —ANI

Orange Alert Issued Following Continuous Rainfall In Uttarkashi

New Delhi: The rain that fell on sections of the national capital on Friday was a welcome relief for the city's residents as the temperature soared.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted that the day would be cloudy with occasional light rain and thundershowers, with strong winds.

"Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds 30-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of many places of Delhi (Vivek Vihar, Red fort, Preet Vihar, Rajeev Chowk, ITO, India Gate, Akshardham, Palam, Safdarjung, Lodi Road, Nehru Stadium, IGI Airport, Vasant Vihar, RK Puram, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Kalkaji, Mahrauli, Chhattarpur, Ayanagar), (Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Noida, Dadri, Gurugram, Manesar) Jahangirabad, Anupshahar, Shikarpur, Aligarh, Iglas (UP) during next 2 hours," the IMD had said in a tweet.

Earlier this week, private forecasting agency Skymet Weather predicted that Cyclone Biparjoy will cause light rainfall to occur across Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and west Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and Friday.

According to the information provided by the IMD, the lowest temperature that was recorded in Delhi on Friday was 27.9 degrees Celsius, while the highest temperature that is likely to be recorded would be approximately 38 degrees Celsius.—Inputs from Agencies
