Chandigarh: A man in Punjab was duped of Rs 22.65 lakh by traders who sold him a horse that later only turned out to be dyed black, the prized colour in horses.Cloth merchant Ramesh Kumar from Sunam town in Sangrur district, in a police complaint, said he was allegedly duped by horse traders -- Jatinder Pal Singh Sekhon, Lakhwinder Singh, and Lachra Khan -- on the pretext of selling him a Marwari breed stallion.He said when he gave a bath to the horse, the dye washed away and the real red coat of the horse surfaced.Kumar invested the money in the black horse to start a stud farm.Police have registered a case of fraud against the accused.As per the police, the accused had cheated eight other people by selling fake breed horses.

Delhi: Slain photojournalist Danish Siddiqui is among four Indians honoured with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize 2022 in the feature photography category.Siddiqui and his colleagues Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo and Amit Dave from the&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;news agency won the award, announced on Monday, for "images of COVID's toll in India that balanced intimacy and devastation, while offering viewers a heightened sense of place", according to The Pulitzer Prizes website.Their work was moved from the breaking news photography category by the judges.Siddiqui, 38, was on assignment in Afghanistan last year when he died.The award-winning journalist was killed in July last while covering clashes between Afghan troops and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city.This is for the second time that Siddiqui has won the Pulitzer Prize.He was honoured with the prestigious award in 2018 as part of the Reuters team for their coverage of the Rohingya crisis.He had extensively covered the Afghanistan conflict, the Hong Kong protests and other major events in Asia, Middle East, and Europe.Siddiqui graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi.He had a degree in Mass Communication from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia in 2007.He started his career as a television news correspondent, switched to photojournalism, and joined Reuters as an intern in 2010.Marcus Yam of the&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;bagged the award in the Breaking News photography category "for raw and urgent images of the US departure from Afghanistan that capture the human cost of the historic change in the country".Yam's work was moved from Feature Photography by the jury.Win McNamee, Drew Angerer, Spencer Platt, Samuel Corum and Jon Cherry of&nbsp;Getty Images&nbsp;also won the award in the Breaking News photography category for their "comprehensive and consistently riveting photos of the attack on the US Capitol".The Washington Post&nbsp;bagged the Pulitzer Prize in public service journalism for its coverage of the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.According to the award committee, the newspaper "compellingly told and vividly presented account of the assault on Washington on January 6, 2021, providing the public with a thorough and unflinching understanding of one of the nation's darkest days".The Pulitzer Board awarded a special citation to the journalists of Ukraine for their "courage, endurance, and commitment to truthful reporting during (President) Vladimir Putin's ruthless invasion of their country and his propaganda war in Russia"."Despite bombardment, abductions, occupation, and even deaths in their ranks, they have persisted in their effort to provide an accurate picture of a terrible reality, doing honour to Ukraine and to journalists around the world," the committee said.The Pulitzer Prizes were established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher, who left money to Columbia University upon his death in 1911.A portion of his bequest was used to found the School of Journalism in 1912 and establish the Pulitzer Prizes, which were first awarded in 1917.The 19-member Pulitzer Board is composed of leading journalists and news executives from media outlets across the US, as well as five academics or persons in the arts.The dean of Columbia's journalism school and the administrator of the prizes are non-voting members.The chair rotates annually to the most senior member or members.—PTI

London:&nbsp;Author Geetanjali Shree's Hindi novel ‘Tomb of Sand' has become the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize. At a ceremony in London on Thursday, the New Delhi-based writer said she was "completely overwhelmed" with the "bolt from the blue" as she accepted her prize, worth GBP 50,000 and shared with the book's English translator, Daisy Rockwell.‘Tomb of Sand', originally ‘Ret Samadhi', is set in northern India and follows an 80-year-old woman in a tale the Booker judges dubbed a "joyous cacophony" and an "irresistible novel". "I never dreamt of the Booker, I never thought I could. What a huge recognition, I'm amazed, delighted, honoured and humbled," said Shree, in her acceptance speech. "There is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to it. ‘Ret Samadhi/Tomb of Sand' is an elegy for the world we inhabit, a lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom. The Booker will surely take it to many more people than it would have reached otherwise, that should do the book no harm," she said. Reflecting upon becoming the first work of fiction in Hindi to make the Booker cut, the 64-year-old author said it feels good to be the means of that happening."But behind me and this book lies a rich and flourishing literary tradition in Hindi, and in other South Asian languages. World literature will be the richer for knowing some of the finest writers in these languages. The vocabulary of life will increase from such an interaction," she said. Rockwell, a painter, writer and translator living in Vermont, US, joined her on stage to receive her award for translating the novel she described as a "love letter to the Hindi language". "Ultimately, we were captivated by the power, the poignancy and the playfulness of ‘Tomb of Sand', Geetanjali Shree's polyphonic novel of identity and belonging, in Daisy Rockwell's exuberant, coruscating translation," said Frank Wynne, chair of the judging panel. "This is a luminous novel of India and partition, but one whose spellbinding brio and fierce compassion weaves youth and age, male and female, family and nation into a kaleidoscopic whole," he said.The book's 80-year-old protagonist, Ma, to her family's consternation, insists on travelling to Pakistan, simultaneously confronting the unresolved trauma of her teenage experiences of Partition, and re-evaluating what it means to be a mother, a daughter, a woman, a feminist. The Booker jury were impressed that rather than respond to tragedy with seriousness, Shree's playful tone and exuberant wordplay results in a book that is "engaging, funny, and utterly original", at the same time as being an urgent and timely protest against the destructive impact of borders and boundaries, whether between religions, countries, or genders. The author of three novels and several story collections, Mainpuri-born Shree has translated her works into English, French, German, Serbian, and Korean. Originally published in Hindi in 2018, ‘Tomb of Sand' is the first of her books to be published in the UK in English by Tilted Axis Press in August 2021.Shree's novel was chosen from a shortlist of six books, the others being: ‘Cursed Bunny' by Bora Chung, translated by Anton Hur from Korean; ‘A New Name: Septology VI-VII' by Jon Fosse, translated by Damion Searls from Norwegian; ‘Heaven' by Mieko Kawakami, translated by Samuel Bett and David Boyd from Japanese; ‘Elena Knows' by Claudia Piñeiro, translated by Frances Riddle from Spanish; and ‘The Books of Jacob' by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Jennifer Croft from Polish. The novel offers an insight to the three generations of women and men around them set in a North Indian middle-class family. The events revolve around the protagonist Mai or the mother, giving the readers a glimpse of the dynamics of relationships, patriarchy, societal prejudices, struggle, survival, and much more. Since childhood, Sunaina, the narrator and also the daughter of the household, aspires to be different than her mother or Mai whom she perceives as weak, imprisoned, abused and suppressed by her husband and in-laws.The story begins with: We always knew mother had a weak spine. But, Rajjo, the mother, was not inherently a spineless creature as the author seemed to have suggested. Rajjo is what she is because she is part of a certain kind of middle class, patriarchal family. Hers is not the problem of Indian women or of mothers, and certainly not of ‘women’. Yet, Mai presents us with a mother-heroine, like Sethe in Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ (1987), who can leave us questioning the joys of motherhood and at many places of that of womanhood as well.Is the always self-sacrificing mother as weak as we perceive her to be? Are women really caged or do they want themselves to be caged? The author poses several relevant questions against the social stereotypes during the course of this simple yet sly novel. The novel will provoke contradicting thoughts about social perception, family, relationships, or hierarchy and give you a perspective you may have never imagined of. ‘Mai: Silently Mother’ received the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize in 2002. In a statement issued here, the Chief Minister, while congratulating Kaur, said that this budding sportsperson from Mehas village near Nabha has made the country proud by her feat.The state government will give her a cash prize of Rs 40 lakh as per the Sports Policy of Punjab. Mann hoped that Kaur's achievement will also inspire other players, especially the girls, to excel in the field of sports and bring laurels to the country. The Chief Minister said that the government is committed to encouraging those who excel in sports, adding that these players will be given cash prizes whenever they do well. Los Angeles: The South Korean sensational show 'Squid Game' took home the Best International Series and Best Actor awards at this year's Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) TV Awards.
According to the HCA on Tuesday (Korean time), 'Squid Game' was named Best International Series and its lead Lee Jung-jae won Best Actor in a Streaming Series, Drama, at its annual awards for TV programmes, reports Yonhap, a news agency.
For the Best International Series award, the Netflix original competed with the Korean-language epic series 'Pachinko', the Mexican comedy 'Acapulco', the French thriller 'Lupin', the Spanish crime action series 'Money Heist' and the American-Mexican crime drama 'Narcos: Mexico'.
In a videotaped acceptance speech, 'Squid Game' creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he is grateful for the honour and now working on the series' second season.
"I believe the series has since overcome the limits of a non-English series to create many historical moments and breakthroughs," he said. 
"I do hope to create a better second season and share it with all the fans and critics around the world."
Lee Jung-jae took home the best actor trophy, beating seven other candidates, including Adam Scott from 'Severance', Jason Bateman from 'Ozark' and Tom Ellis from 'Lucifer'.
He was the only non-English performer among the nominees.
The awards came about a month before the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony slated for September 12, where 'Squid Game' has nabbed 14 nominations, including outstanding drama series and outstanding lead actor.
'Squid Game' is the first South Korean-made content to be included in the final list of nominees for the Primetime Emmy Awards, one of the four major American awards for performing arts and entertainment.
It is also the first non-English language series to vie for television's top honour at the Primetime Emmys.&nbsp;

Dehradun: After the Uttarakhand Sports Department increased the prize money awarded to medal-winning players and coaches, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the move was made to promote sports in the state and to provide better performance to athletes.
On Friday, the Uttarakhand Sports Department increased the prize amount awarded to players and coaches of the state for winning medals at national and international levels by 30 to 100 per cent.
Gold medalists will now receive two crores, silver medalists will receive 1.5 crores, and bronze medalists will receive one crore and 50 lakhs for participating in the Olympics.
Speaking to ANI, the Chief Minister said "Our government encourages youth and wants to advance the youth; our youth should play with dedication and perform well in order to win the most medals for the country and state. It is our goal to help them hone their skills in this area."
He stated that there is no shortage of talent among our youth, adding to this Dhami said better sports coaches have also been arranged for the state's athletes. "We have developed a new sports policy that will make whatever better provisions are required in the interest of the players," he said.
The new sports policy also includes provisions for children with talent and the ability to come forward; in addition to increasing sports awards, many welfare measures have been implemented in the players' best interests, Dhami added. —ANI

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 is about making difficult processes easier. Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal have laid the foundation for a functional form of chemistry - click chemistry - in which molecular building blocks snap together quickly and efficiently. Carolyn Bertozzi has taken click chemistry to a new dimension and started utilising it in living organisms. Chemists have long been driven by the desire to build increasingly complicated molecules. In pharmaceutical research, this has often involved artificially recreating natural molecules with medicinal properties. This has led to many admirable molecular constructions, but these are generally time consuming and very expensive to produce.
"This year's Prize in Chemistry deals with not overcomplicating matters, instead working with what is easy and simple. Functional molecules can be built even by taking a straightforward route," says Johan Aqvist, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. —ANI

Kolkata: International Booker Prize winner Geetanjali Shree's "Tomb of Sand" is among the five translations shortlisted for the Rs 25 lakh JCB Prize for Literature, India's richest literary award, it was announced here on Friday.
The shortlisted novels are:
* "Imaan" by Manoranjan Byapari, translated from Bengali by Arunava Sinha (Eka)
* "The Paradise of Food" by Khalid Jawed, translated from Urdu by Baran Farooqi (Juggernaut)
* "Valli" by Sheela Tomy, translated from Malayalam by Jayasree Kalathil (Harper Perennial)
* "Tomb of Sand" by Geetanjali Shree, translated from Hindi by Daisy Rockwell (Penguin Random House India)
* "Song of the Soil" by Chuden Kabimo, translated from Nepali by Ajit Baral (Rachna Books)
Sheela Tomy and Chuden Kabimo are debut novelists. The winner of the prize will be announced on November 19. Following the unveiling, Jayant Kriplani, Paramita Saha and Sandip Roy read passages from the shortlisted titles.
"Judging literature is a challenge," Jury Chair A.S. Panneerselvan saidunveiled the shortlist. From exploring new content and deploying various literary devices, authors constantly try to push the boundary. while unveiling the shortlist at the Glenburn Penthouse in an intimate gathering of authors, translators and the literary community of the city, adding: "Every step is crucial and every innovation is precious."
"However, when the final evaluation happened, these wonders of the mind gave space to the power of the heart, where empathy became the criteria for creating the shortlist. All the novels in the shortlist exemplify the idea of empathy, concern for fellow humans, and in a sense a worldview in which the head does not subsume the heart," Panneerselvan said.
Mita Kapur, Literary Director of the JCB Literature Foundation, said: "The fact that in the 5th year of the JCB Prize for Literature we have the most diverse shortlist yet, fills us with hope. This is a list that brings forth the many Indias across time and geography. This is truly representative of the spectrum of languages, authors and publishers that make up our industry, but most of all it represents the quality of excellent writing that India has to offer."
Each of the five shortlisted authors will receive Rs 1 lakh; and the translator an additional Rs 50,000. The translator of the winning work will receive an additional Rs 10 lakh. —PTI

After a pandemic-induced break of two years, the marquee event of Pune's long-distance running is making a comeback and the race organisers have announced Rs 10 lakh prize for national records in the half-marathon category, for both men and women.
The Pune Half Marathon primarily features four categories, which include the half marathon (21.1km), a 10km run, a 5km run and a 3km (family and fun) run.

Dubai: The ICC on Thursday announced equal prize money for men's and women's teams at its global events in a bid to bring in pay parity, ushering in a new era in world cricket.  In the last 50 over men's World Cup, champions England got $4 million and runners-up New Zealand received $2 million.  "The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced equal prize money for men's and women's teams at ICC events. The decision was taken at the ICC Annual Conference in Durban, South Africa and ensures the ICC Board fulfilled its commitment to reaching prize money equity by 2030 well ahead of schedule," the ICC said in a statement. "Teams will now receive equal prize money for the equivalent finishing position at comparable events as well as the same amount for winning a match at those events," it further stated.  ICC Chair Greg Barclay said: "This is a significant moment in the history of our sport, and I am delighted that men's and women's cricketers competing at ICC global events will now be rewarded equally.  "Since 2017 we have increased prize money at women's events every year with a clear focus on reaching equal prize money and from here on in, winning the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup will carry the same prize money as winning the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the same for T20 World Cups and U19s too."  Barclay added, "Cricket is genuinely a sport for all and this decision from the ICC Board reinforces that and enables us to celebrate and value every single player's contribution to the game equally."  BCCI secretary Jay Shah played an active role as the head of Financial &amp; Commercial Affairs Committee (F&amp;CA) in formulating the policy having done the same in his own board last year.  "I thank the fellow Board members for their support in helping achieve this important endeavour. New York: Indian-American economist Raj Chetty was awarded Harvard University’s coveted George Ledlie Prize for using big data to uncover myths, barriers to achieving the American Dream. Chetty is the William A. Ackman Professor of Economics at Harvard University and director of Opportunity Insights — a group of economists based at Harvard who study inequality. “Raj’s groundbreaking work on economic mobility and his efforts to share this data with policymakers are making the American Dream more accessible to all,” said University Provost and Chief Academic Officer Alan M. Garber. Using anonymised tax records, Chetty’s Opportunity Insights constructed the Opportunity Atlas — an interactive tool that maps out economic outcomes for children across the US to highlight which neighbourhoods seem to offer the best chance to rise from poverty. Chetty said he became interested in this work because of his own background, coming to the US from India with his parents when he was nine-years-old. He said he saw the disparities not only between New Delhi and the US, but also between himself and his cousins. “My parents, who grew up in very low-income families and villages in South India … the opportunities they had were greatly shaped by the fact that they happened to be the ones who were picked to get a higher education in their families,” Chetty said in a Harvard University statement. He added that it was common at that time in developing countries that a family would pick only one child to get advanced education because they couldn’t afford to educate all the kids. “And it so happened to be that my mom was the one chosen in her family, and my dad was the one chosen in his family,” he said. “And I could kind of see how that’s played out through the generations in my own family, through the opportunities my cousins have had versus what I’ve had … ending up here at Harvard and the various opportunities I’ve had, I felt have stemmed from that.” The work of Opportunity Insights is focused on helping policymakers and economists understand the real-life factors behind economic mobility and pave the way for new approaches to make the American Dream available to all. His work applies a big-data approach to the science of economic opportunity — providing granular insights in much the same way that a microscope does for the biological sciences. Chetty said one of the most impactful outcomes they’ve been able to observe is the role geography plays in children’s outcomes. “There are some places in America where kids with the exact same background have much better chances of rising up,” he said. “There are other places where they look much worse. So that was interesting in and of its own right, because it teaches you something about the origins of economic opportunity, that it really matters where you grow up. It’s about your community, schools, and neighbourhood. “It speaks to the old debates about nature versus nurture and shows that nurture matters quite a bit, but environment matters quite a bit above and beyond genetics and things like that,” he added. Chetty’s earlier work focused on the fading American Dream, neighbourhood variation, and the role of childhood environment as a key driver of economic mobility. He has since gone on to explore other factors, including the role of racial disparities and social capital and connections. The George Ledlie Prize is bestowed no more frequently than every two years to a member of the Harvard community who has, “since the last awarding of said prize, by research, discovery, or otherwise, made the most valuable contribution to science, or in any way for the benefit of mankind”. Defying Oppression, Afghan Woman Wins World Peace Prize In Sweden

Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Renowned Agricultural scientist and the driving force behind India's Green Revolution MS Swaminathan, passed away on Thursday, at the age of 98. Swaminathan was an eminent agricultural scientist who headed the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Taramani, Chennai.
Born on August 7, 1925, in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district, Swaminathan was instrumental in developing high-yielding varieties of paddy that helped ensure India’s low-income farmers produce more yield. He was known as the "Father of Economic Ecology" by the United Nations Environment Programme. Swaminathan is survived by his three daughters Soumya Swaminathan, Madhura Swaminathan, and Nitya Swaminathan. In 1987, Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food Prize in recognition of his monumental contributions. He was also awarded by Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971 and the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986.

Stockholm [Sweden]: Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman have been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discoveries that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. "The 2023 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19," The Nobel Prize posted on X on Monday.
"The findings by 2023 #NobelPrize laureates Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman led to the approval of two highly successful mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines in late 2020. The vaccines have saved millions of lives and prevented severe disease in many more," the post added. The Nobel Assembly said the discoveries by the two Nobel Laureates were critical for developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020. “Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times,” it said.   It said the laureates discovered that base-modified mRNA can be used “to block activation of inflammatory reactions and increase protein production when mRNA is delivered to cells”. The Nobel Assembly said Karikó and Weissman published their results in a seminal 2005 paper that received little attention at the time but laid the foundation for critically important developments that have served humanity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
