A 82-year-old veteran politician was recently admitted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, Haryana, where he passed away. Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, tweeted the news of the death of his father, party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav.
"My respected father and your 'Netaji' has passed away," tweeted Akhilesh Yadav from the official Samajwadi Party account.
As a mark of respect for Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared a three-day state mourning. "The government of Uttar Pradesh has declared three days of mourning for the passing of Mulayam Singh Yadav. His funeral will be conducted with full state honours "Adityanath said in a Hindi tweet.
The SP leader's condition had been critical for the past few days.
Since August 22, Mulayam Singh Yadav has been receiving his routine medical checkups and examinations.
His health suddenly deteriorated last week, prompting his transfer to the ICU at Medanta Hospital.
Earlier on Friday, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh visited the ailing former UP chief minister at the Gurugram Medanta hospital.
On Wednesday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav checked on the health of Mulayam Singh Yadav at the Medanta hospital in Gurugram.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, born on 22 November 1939, is one of the most prominent leaders of Uttar Pradesh, having served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times and as Minister of Defence in the Union Government.
In 1993, Yadav, affectionately referred to by his supporters as "Netaji" or "respected leader," became Uttar Pradesh's chief minister for the second time. He was elected 10 times as an MLA and 7 times as a Lok Sabha representative.

President Droupadi Murmu praised Yadav as a towering grassroots leader who rose to prominence from humble beginnings in a Hindi tweet.
She went on to praise the former defence minister as a leader with tremendous qualities, saying his death was a "huge loss" to the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at Yadav's death and remembered his long friendship with the socialist leader.
"When we were Chief Ministers of our separate states, I had several encounters with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji." The intimate relationship persisted, and I always looked forward to hearing his thoughts. I am saddened by his death. Condolences to his family and the thousands of people who supported him. "Om Shanti," he said on Twitter.
"He was largely regarded as a modest and grounded leader who cared about people's difficulties." He committed his life to popularising the ideas of Loknayak JP and Dr. Lohia," the Prime Minister said on Twitter.
Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, expressed condolences to Yadav's family and remembered receiving a lot of love from the late leader.
Gadkari said that he has had Yadav's complete backing for his policy efforts aimed at legalising e-rickshaws in the nation.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, according to Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh, was a strong Lohiaite with supporters across the political spectrum.
"Mulayam Singh Yadav was a loyal Lohiaite with supporters from across the political spectrum." His terms as CM of UP were quite important. "He played a crucial national role on two occasions: as Defence Minister in the Deve Gowda and Gujral governments, and in 2002 when he recommended APJ Abdul Kalam for President," Ramesh tweeted.

Saifai: The air reverberated with chants of 'Netaji amar rahein', emotions ran high and the surging crowds broke down barricades as the mortal remains of Samajwadi patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav were consigned to flames in his native village Saifai on Tuesday.
The last rites were performed by Samajwadi president Akhilesh Yadav, who lit the pyre in an emotionally surcharged atmosphere.
The body of the socialist leader was kept at his residence till this morning when it was shifted to a specially erected pandal where people came to pay their respects.
Around 2.p.m , the mortal remains of the leader were shifted to the cremation site where the last rites were performed with full state honours.
Huge crowds were seen in Saifai and all roads were completely blocked as people jostled with each other for a glimpse of the late leader.
Mulayam Singh's younger brother Shivpal Yadav repeatedly appealed to the people to maintain order and allow the traffic movement.
Several VIPs had to leave their cars and walk to the venue.
Almost every SP leader, worker, legislator and member from all corners of the state was seen in Saifai to offer tributes to the late leader. Several Uttar Pradesh ministers, including deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Suresh Khanna, Jitin Prasad were seen offering floral tributes to the late leader. The Yadav clan stood together in their hour of grief. Akhilesh, Shivpal and Dharmendra Yadav broke down several times and were seen consoling each other. Senior SP leader Mohd Azam Khan, despite poor health, also came to Saifai late last night to pay respects to his long-time friend and associate.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, NCP leaders Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel and Supriya Sule, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Kamal Nath, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Bihar deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav, Union Minister S.P. Singh Baghel, Congress MPs Mallikarjun Kharge, Pramod Tiwari were among those present.
Reliance chairman Anil Ambani, a close friend of the Yadav clan, was present. SP MP Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan were also present.
Earlier in the day, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu arrived in Saifai and termed the loss as 'irreparable'. RLD president Jayant Chaudhary and BJP MP Varun Gandhi were also present. It was an emotional moment when Varun hugged Akhilesh and spoke to him briefly. Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev accompanied the mortal remains of Mulayam Singh to the cremation site.

Lucknow / Haridwar: The family of Mulayam Singh Yadav will hold a 'shanti havan' in the coming days to wrap up the post-death rituals while the Samajwadi Party (SP) has decided to hold 'shraddhanjali sabhas (prayer meetings)' for the party patriarch across the state on October 21.
"We will be holding a 'shanti havan', instead of 13th day rites (tehravin) rituals, in Saifai as per the family tradition. The date of the shanti havan will be decided soon," said a member of the Yadav clan.
Mulayam Singh Yadav's ashes would later be taken to Haridwar for immersion after the shanti havan.
"It has been decided to immerse the ashes in Haridwar after the shanti havan. All the family members will go to Haridwar," he said. Till then, the entire family will remain in Saifai. Mulayam Singh Yadav, a three-time former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and defence minister, passed away due to illness at a private hospital in Gurugram on October 10 at the age of 82.
His mortal remains were consigned to flames with full state honours on October 11. —IANS

Ballia: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Ballia Virendra Singh has sanctioned Rs 25 lakh from his MP fund for the construction of an auditorium in the memory of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The proposed auditorium will be constructed on the premises of Ballia district court. The proposed auditorium will be named "Dhartiputra Mulayam Singh Yadav Samvad Bhawan".
Mulayam Singh Yadav had passed away on October 10 at the age of 82. He was elected 10 times MLA and 7 times as Lok Sabha MP. He was facing age-related issues and was admitted in ICU at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital.
Several leader of different party attended his funeral. Last rites of Mulayam Singh were performed at his ancestral home in Etawah.
Soon after learning about the demise of the Samajwadi Party founder, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recollected his relationship with the veteran leader and tweeted, "Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji was a remarkable personality. He was widely admired as a humble and grounded leader who was sensitive to people's problems. He served people diligently and devoted his life towards popularising the ideals of Loknayak JP and Dr Lohia."

Lucknow (The Hawk): The party is in turmoil, and the family is beginning to feel increasingly uneasy.
Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, faces a significant obstacle in the form of by-elections for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which his late father held. This challenge comes less than a month after the death of Samajwadi patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Given that Mainpuri has been one of the main Samajwadi strongholds since 1989, the seat is vital for both the Samajwadi Party and the family.
Akhilesh Yadav faces a significant difficulty choosing a candidate for the December 5 by-election for the Mainpuri seat, made more difficult by Shivpal Singh Yadav's recent announcement that he would run for the seat in 2024 if Mulayam Singh did not.
"Shivpal Yadav might not accept an outsider for this seat, therefore it's critical for Akhilesh to maintain the party's unity at this time—especially in light of the party's recent loss in Lakhimpur Kheri. Our support base would be split if Shivpal stood for the seat, and the Samajwadi Party would lose face as a result "said a seasoned party chief.
Akhilesh is also under pressure to assure the Samajwadi Party's victory in Mainpuri because the party has suffered a string of setbacks since he took over the reins.
Under his direction, Akhilesh lost the 2017 Assembly elections, the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and the 2022 Assembly elections.
After the 2022 Assembly elections, the SP suffered humiliating losses in the by-elections for the Lok Sabha in Azamgarh and Rampur, and now in the Lakhimpur by-election.
Akhilesh's party and family may turn on him if he suffers yet another setback in Mainpuri (and Rampur).
If family sources are to be believed, Tej Pratap Yadav, who had won the Mainpuri seat in the 2014 by-elections, is the likely winner.
Mulayam's grand-nephew, Tej Pratap Yadav, is close to him. Tej Pratap was mentored by Mulayam in politics, and he frequently sought his counsel on important issues.
After Mulayam won the 2019 elections, Tej Pratap, the son-in-law of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, has been vying for the Mainpuri seat.
Since the SP patriarch had been ill for the previous two years, Netaji's constituency was represented by Tej Pratap, the grandson of Mulayam's oldest sibling.
A senior party leader stated, "He is the natural pick for the SP and happens to know the constituents like the back of his hand."
Shivpal and Tej Pratap are also close, and according to family sources, Shivpal won't run against Tej Pratap in the by-elections if Tej Pratap is designated the candidate.
"Abhay Ram, Mulayam Singh's younger brother, is now attempting to keep the family together in Mulayam Singh's absence, and he has proposed that Tej Pratap run from Mainpuri. This would stop Akhilesh and Shivpal from arguing further "a family insider stated.

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party on Thursday announced the name of party chief Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav as its candidate for Mainpuri parliamentary seat, which fell vacant after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The bypoll to the seat will be held on December 5 and the result will be declared on December 8.
"The party declares Dimple Yadav as candidate for Mainpuri bypoll," Samajwadi Party (SP) said on its official Twitter handle.
Dimple Yadav, 44, had lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 to BJP candidate Subrat Pathak from Kannauj.
Reacting to the development, the Bharatiya Janata Party said the SP cannot come out of dynastic politics and added that people would vote for the party this time seeing good work under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Shivpal Yadav's Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia (PSPL) said a final decision on this seat will be taken by the party leadership.
"We have yet to decide on this seat. The party leadership will make a decision in this regard soon," a PSPL spokesperson said.
In 2019, SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav won the seat by a margin of more than 94 thousand votes over his nearest rival BJP's Prem Singh Shakya.
Name of Mulayam's grandson Tej Pratap Yadav, former MP from Mainpuri, was doing the rounds as the probable SP candidate from the seat, but the choice ultimately fell on Dimple Yadav.
Dimple Yadav's candidature is seen as the SP's efforts to carry forward the legacy of her father-in-law on the seat, considered a stronghold of the party since 1996. Her selection is also seen as an attempt to unite party cadres ahead of the bypoll.
Akhiklesh's Karhal assembly seat is part of Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency and so is Jaswant Nagar represented by Shivpal Yadav..
Dimple Yadav was elected unopposed from the Kannauj constituency to the Lok Sabha in 2012 after Akhilesh became the chief minister and resigned from the seat to enter the Uttar Pradesh legislative council.
The declaration of Dimple Yadav's candidature would put a tough challenge to the BJP which is yet to announce its candidate for the seat.
BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said, "What else could you expect from the SP, which only gives preference to its family. The people of Mainpuri will this time elect a BJP MP."
SP leader and former MLC Rajpal Kashyap said that his party candidate will win by a record margin. "People of Mainpuri have always supported the SP. After the death of Netaji, people will once again support the party and give us a chance to serve them," Kashyap said.
According to sources in parties, Yadavs account for about 35 per cent of the total 12.13 lakh voters in Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency while the rest include Shakyas, Thakurs, Brahmins, Scheduled Castes and Muslims. When asked, Congress spokesperson Ashok Singh said that it was SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav's seat and "we welcome their decision". About whether Congress will contest on the seat or not, Singh said, "We have yet to decide. We still have time."
Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party is yet to take a call on the Mainpuri bypoll.
BSP's Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali had polled over 2.5 lakh votes in Azamgarh by-election which helped BJP's Dinesh Lal Yadav alias Nirahua beat SP's nominee Dharmendra Yadav in the seat vacated by Akhilesh Yadav after becoming MLA.
Mainpuri parliamentary constituency has five assembly segments, including Mainpuri, Bhogaon, Kishni, Karhal and Jaswant Nagar. While SP won three seats, BJP got two in the 2022 polls. —PTI

He declared, "This family comes together when it suits them, then falls apart again."
Shivpal Yadav was previously referred to as a "chunavi chacha" by deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, who also predicted that he would be removed from office once more after the elections.

He will always be remembered for connecting the exploited, deprived and backward [classes] with the mainstream of society," Yogi Adityanath said in a tweet in Hindi.
Former Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was on Wednesday conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously by President Droupadi Murmu and the award was received by his son Akhilesh Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.
The award was conferred at the Padma Awards ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, had founded the Samajwadi Party. He died on October 10, last year, at the age of 82.
