New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a fresh case against former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on the charge of taking land from aspirants in return for jobs in the railway, officials said on Friday. The probe agency has started searches at 17 locations in Delhi and Bihar, they said. The alleged land-for-jobs scam pertains to the period when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the railway minister in the United Progressive Alliance government, officials said.—PTI

He has also announced an all-party meeting on May 27 to discuss the caste-based census issue.The caste-based census is one of the issues in Bihar where Nitish Kumar has differences with the BJP, and may provide the necessary ‘opportunity’ for him to leave the BJP and form the government with the RJD. Keeping this in view, the BJP which is against the caste-based census, held an emergency meeting on Monday evening and decided to support the issue. Hari Bhushan Thakur Bachaul, a BJP MLA said: “When our Prime Minister said that the states are independent to conduct caste-based census on their own expenses, where is the doubt. The opposition are confusing the people that the BJP is against the caste-based census.Meanwhile, RJD senior leader and MLA Bhai Virendra said: “Any political party supports or not, the RJD will give full support to Nitish Kumar for the caste-based census. Medininagar:&nbsp;RJD chief Lalu Prasad had a narrow escape on Tuesday morning as a fire that broke out in a room of the circuit house in Jharkhand's Palamu district where he was staying could be doused in time, officials said.Prasad, 73, was having breakfast in his room around 8 am when the wall-mounted fan caught fire, they said.The fire was immediately doused by his aides, they added."The fire was caused by a short circuit and electricity supply to the premises was snapped after the incident," Deputy Commissioner of Palamu Shashiranjan told PTI.No one has suffered any injury due to the incident and no significant damage has been reported, he said.The short circuit has been rectified and the fan that caught fire was removed, he added.Prasad arrived in Medininagar, the district headquarters of Palamu, on Monday to appear before a special court on Wednesday in connection with a 13-year-old case pertaining to the violation of the Model Code of Conduct during elections.He is slated to appear in the court of special judge Satish Kumar Munda.A case under IPC sections 188, 279, 290, 291 and 34, and section 127 of Representation of People's Act was registered against the RJD chief in Garhwa district after his chopper had diverted and landed in a paddy field allegedly owing to the mistake of the pilot instead of the scheduled helipad in Medininagar during the 2009 assembly polls in Jharkhand.Prasad's counsel Prabhat Kumar said the case was later transferred to Ranchi and then to Medininagar.—PTI

Lalu Prasad Yadav had appeared before the special MP, MLA court in connection with a model code of conduct violation case of 2009. "After hearing the petition of Former Bihar CM and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aninews.in/topic/rjd-chief-lalu-prasad-yadav" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: transparent;">RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav</a>, the Court has imposed a fine of Rs 6000 on him. The case has been disposed and he is free of charges now. He does not need to come here again," said Advocate Dhirendra Kumar Singh, Lalu Prasad Yadav's lawyer.Last month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed FIR in the 'land for railway job' case named Lalu Yadav, his wife, daughters and several others as accused in the case. The CBI conducted searches at 17 locations belonging to Lalu Yadav and his family members in Delhi and Bihar. The alleged scam took place when Yadav was Railway Minister between 2004 to 2009.Meanwhile, Lalu Yadav has filed an application at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi seeking the release of his passport for renewal as he has to go abroad for a kidney transplant. "Lalu Yadav will go abroad, most likely to Singapore, for a kidney transplant. Process for an appointment with the doctor over there is underway. Meanwhile, the application has been filed in court so that passport can be renewed. The renewed passport will be submitted again to the court," Prabhat Kumar, Yadav's lawyer told.—ANI

Modi on Wednesday said that Lalu Prasad Yadav's family had used Hridayanand Chaudhary, a fourth-grade railway employee ('Khalasi') at Rajendra Nagar terminus railway station in Patna, as a pawn for the transaction involving 2.5 'Katha' land in Patna worth Rs 70 lakh when the RJD Chief was the Union Railways Minister from 2004-2009. As per the information collected by the Central Bureau Of Investigation, Bhola Yadav appeared as a witness in more than 40 land registries being done in the names of Lalu Prasad Yadav's family members. "When Lalu Prasad was the Union Railways Minister, he not only took land from job aspirants but also from the leaders of his own party to make them Ministers. Kanti Singh and Raghunath Jha were two Ministers who had gifted the land to Lalu Prasad's sons -- Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav," the BJP Rajya Sabha MP said in a series of tweets. "Lalu Prasad Yadav, during his tenure as a Union Railways Minister, was running land-for-job scheme in Indian Railways and Bhola Yadav, who was the Officer on Special Duty to Lalu Prasad Yadav, was allegedly looking after the land-for-job scheme," Modi added. "Hridayanand Chaudhary was a 'Khalasi' in India Railways and it was hard to understand how he gifted the 2.5 Katha plot of a prime location in Patna to Lalu Prasad Yadav's fifth daughter Hema Yadav. That land was neither earned by Chaudhary through his legal income nor his ancestral properties. He was used as a pawn by Lalu Prasad Yadav during the land transaction. A person named Vishnu Dev Rai's grandson Pintu Kumar Rai was selected for a job in Western Railways in Mumbai. Vishnu Dev Rai had registered that piece of land to Chaudhary. After some months, Chaudhary gifted the same land to Hema Yadav," he said. In the land-for-job scam, Lalu Prasad Yadav is facing alleged charges of offering jobs to a number of persons without releasing any advertisement. The CBI on May 18 registered an FIR against 15 persons, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi and daughters -- Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav. The RJD Chief allegedly took 1,05,292 square feet land (four 'Bigha' land) illegally from job aspirants and leaders of his own party. Multiple teams of CBI also conducted raids at 15 locations of Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family on May 20.—IANS

Patna: With a Mahagatbandhan government under Nitish Kumar on the cards for the second time, speculation over the contours of the new dispensation has started doing the rounds.
According to sources, the new JD-U-led government is likely to have the same shape as the previous one. Tejashwi Yadav is tipped to be Deputy Chief Minister again, and might get a key portfolio such as Road Construction.
The RJD is also said to be angling to get the Home portfolio, while it is expected that the Speaker's post may go to it. Meanwhile, it is likely the party's Abdul Bari Siddiqui will get Finance while Sunil Kumar Singh could be the Cooperatives Minister.
Like the last time, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's eldest son Tej Pratap Yadav could be made a minister, but might not be given a crucial portfolio like Health, as was the case earlier.
RJD's Shyam Rajak is also tipped to be made a minister again, and get the same Food and Civil Supplies portfolio.
There is unlikely to be much major change in the charges of the JD-U ministers, and most of them are expected to retain their existing portfolios.
The Congress is likely to get four berths and Congress Legislature Party chief Ajit Sharma is a strong contender.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist-Liberation has decided not to join the government and extend outside support only. —IANS

New Delhi/Patna: BJP leader and Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Wednesday took a dig at Lalu Prasad Yadav referring to the RJD supremo’s old remarks in which he had described Nitish Kumar as a “snake” and said that now the same snake has entered Yadav’s house.
When Nitish Kumar snapped ties with the RJD in 2017 and allied with the BJP again, Yadav in a tweet described him as a snake that sheds its skin every two years.
Sharing Yadav’s tweet, Giriraj Singh, who has often been critical of Kumar, on Wednesday said, “The snake has entered your home.” He said that Nitish Kumar considers himself prime minister material and his ambition leads him to ditch the people’s mandate and jump to the other side to form the government.
“One who cannot become chief minister on his own, dreams about becoming the prime minister,” Singh said.
He also dared the JD(U) chief to seek a fresh mandate from the people of Bihar.
Even when the BJP was in alliance with JD(U), Singh had many times expressed his reservations about various decisions of Kumar and his stance on various ideological and Hindutva-related issues.
A dharna was held in front of the BJP office at Birchand Patel Marg in Patna that was attended by all party MPs and MLAs from Bihar who vowed to “expose” the 71-year-old JD(U) leader through agitations at district and block levels later this week.
“There is no other reason for the turnaround except his prime ministerial ambitions which make him envious of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He should first try to win a state election on his own, without using an alliance as a crutch”, said Union minister Giriraj Singh. —PTI

"When it comes to demonetisation, Narendra Modi takes decisions overnight. The Narendra Modi government is responsible for ruining the economy of the country. As a result, the Rupee is tumbling to historic low, he is quiet," Lalu Prasad posted on Twitter.
"Narendra Modi would not open his mouth on poverty, unemployment and inflation. His government is responsible for the weak economy of the country. This is the first time when Rupee reached 83," Lalu Prasad said.
However, The rupee rebounded from its lifetime lows to close 25 paise higher at 82.75 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday amid weakness in the greenback overseas.

Patna (The Hawk): According to his son and the deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, doctors in Singapore successfully transplanted the kidney of the former chief minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, on Monday.
For the transplant, Lalu Prasad was checked into the Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore. The kidney was given by Rohini Acharya, his daughter.
Tejashwi published a video from his official Twitter account after the successful transplant, stating that his sister Rohini and father Lalu Prasad were in good health.
"After a successful kidney transplant, my father and sister were moved from the operating room to the intensive care unit. They both interacted with us and were in good health. Everyone's blessings are appreciated, Tejashwi said.
The second-eldest daughter of Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi's sister, presently resides in Singapore with her husband and kids. Rohini made the decision to donate her kidney after Lalu Prasad had a severe illness in both of his kidneys.
Singaporean medical professionals examined both the donor and the receiver and approved the transplant. Since the donor and the beneficiary were members of the same family, the doctors saw no complications.
At many locations around Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supporters organised a "havan."
Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu Prasad's eldest son, also hosted a "havan" in his Patna home. RJD MLC Qari Suhaib sold a "chadar" in the Patna High Court's "Mazaar."
Lalu Prasad had a severe illness in both of his kidneys and was incarcerated at Ranchi's Hotwar jail for the fodder scam. Dr. Vidyapati was the first to recommend that he get a kidney transplant after he was admitted to the Ranchi Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi. Later, he was also granted admission to AIIMS, Delhi.
According to state RJD President Jagadanand Singh, "Rohini Acharya has given them the message that no one is bigger than mother and father in today's world where children of big families do not care for their fathers and moms."
"Lalu Prasad is a leader of Dalits and a member of the weaker class in the country," he continued. Everyone, even the leaders of the opposition parties, is praying for his recovery.
A BJP MLC named Nawal KIshore Yadav stated: "Lalu Prasad Yadav is a leader of Bihar and our nation. I ask God for a long life for him.

New Delhi: On Tuesday, former railway minister and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad was questioned by the CBI for about five hours across two sessions in connection with the land for employment scam case.
They said that the Yadav family and its allies received land tracts in exchange for providing them with jobs on the railroads.
At 10:40 a.m., five CBI agents arrived in two automobiles at the home of Misa Bharti in Pandara Park, not far from India Gate, where Prasad is currently staying. They stayed until 12:55 p.m., when they left for lunch. They claimed that interrogation resumed at 2.15 pm and lasted until 5.15 pm. The former Bihar chief minister, who is currently in quarantine following kidney transplant surgery, was reportedly presented with documents during the exercise, which was filmed.—Inputs from Agencies

New Delhi: On Friday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched various places in Bihar as part of its money laundering investigation into the land for jobs'scam' case. These included the homes of former chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav's three daughters and other RJD leaders.
In Patna, Phulwari Sharif, Delhi-NCR, Ranchi, and Mumbai, officials have said they are searching locations associated with Prasad's daughters Ragini Yadav, Chanda Yadav, and Hema Yadav, as well as former RJD MP Abu Dojana.
An entourage of central security personnel is now searching several dozen locations. They further alleged that a property in south Delhi that is associated with Prasad's son, the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, is also being protected.—Inputs from Agencies

It said the investigation is underway to unearth more investments made on behalf of Prasad's family and their associates in various sectors, including real estate, at various places.
The ED had launched raids on Friday at multiple locations linked to Prasad's family members including that of his son and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav in Delhi.

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday hinted that he agreed with the contention of ally Rashtriya Janata Dal that the recent crackdown on its president Lalu Prasad and his family members by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate was "politically motivated".
This was in contrast to the stand he took in 2017, when he had wanted the ally to come clean on charges of corruption. The JD-U leader also rubbished speculations that he was maintaining an eloquent silence on the issue because of anxieties about tarnishing his own image for probity by aligning with "tainted" politicians and could even be thinking of breaking away with the "Mahaga-thbandhan", which besides RJD, also includes Congress and the Left. Kumar was approached with queries by journalists who wanted to know about his views on the questioning of Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi by the CBI earlier this week, followed by raids conducted on a number of premises, including houses of his three daughters and a daughter in law by ED on Friday and a fresh summons issued by the CBI to younger son and Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav. In a video statement, RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Kumar Jha warned that people of Bihar will take to the streets upon learning that Yadav's "pregnant wife was taken ill with high blood pressure" because of the ED raids at her house that "continued till 4 am today".
"What do I have to say, those who are at the receiving end are giving an adequate response," said Kumar in his trademark enigmatic style, before adding, "similar things had happened in 2017 when I was on this side (in the anti-BJP camp). Now that I am here again, these things are happening again."
The allusion was to the land for hotels case in which the ED had named, along with others, Yadav, who was the deputy CM then as well, and Kumar recalled having asked the young RJD leader to "explain" his side of the story and the BJP having exploited the situation to its advantage.
Kumar was understood to have asked Yadav to resign his ministerial berth on moral grounds for the period till his name was cleared, a proposition to which the RJD did not agree. The JD-U leader himself resigned as chief minister, in disgust, and the BJP, his former ally, came with the offer of unconditional support.
Subsequently, Kumar formed a new government with the BJP, in less than 24 hours of resigning. "I do not wish to take any names because the person (in BJP) who came to me with the offer of support may get further marginalised in his party," said Kumar, but dropped his guard when journalists found the clue and mentioned former Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi.
"What do I say about Sushil Kumar Modi. I need not repeat that I never wanted him to suffer his current fate. But he is welcome to keep speaking against me. Maybe it will resurrect him politically," said Kumar, visibly upset over the tirade against himself by the former deputy ever since he dumped the BJP in August last year. Kumar also made light of his JD-U not being a signatory to the recent letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in protest against CBI arresting Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, and said, "I will be there when all parties (opposed to BJP) agree to unitedly fight the next Lok Sabha polls."
The JD-U chief, however, reiterated, "I have no (prime ministerial) ambitions for myself. I had made it clear even at the recent convention of CPIML(L) where all constituents of the Mahagathbandhan were present. I had even asked the Congress to take the lead in forging oppositional unity."
To a pointed question as to whether he could think of pulling out of the "opposition camp" because of corruption cases against leaders of most non-NDA parties, he exclaimed, "The question does not arise."

New Delhi: The Rouse Avenue Court here on Wednesday granted regular bail to former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi and their daughter Misa Bharti and other accused in connection with the case related to the alleged land-for-job scam.
The Special Judge Geetanjali Goel on Wednesday while granting regular bail noted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had not arrested any accused in the case and the chargesheet was filed without arrests.
The Court directed all the accused to furnish a Rs 50,000 personal bail bond and a like amount as surety. The case will next be heard on March 29. Lalu Yadav was seen arriving at the Rouse Avenue Court in a wheelchair. The former Bihar Chief Minister had undergone a kidney transplant in Singapore three months ago.
Appearing for several accused (landholders) in the case, Advocate Mudit Jain stated that the CBI chose not to arrest the accused person, which is in itself evidence of their co-operation. The allegations are based on assumptions that the sale done was for valid consideration. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its chargesheet filed in connection with the alleged land-for-job scam stated that irregular appointments of candidates were made in Central Railway, violating the laid down norms and procedures of Indian Railways for recruitment. As a quid-pro-quo, the candidates directly or through their immediate relatives/family members, sold land to the family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav (then Union Railway Minister) at highly discounted rates up to one foruth to one fifth of the prevailing market rates, stated CBI. The probe agency further stated that investigation has revealed that Lalu Prasad Yadav during the period 2007-08, when he was Union Railway Minister, with the intent to acquire the land parcels situated in Village Mahuabagh, Patna and Village Kunjwa, Patna which were situated adjacent to the land parcels already owned by his family members; entered into a criminal conspiracy with his wife Rabri Devi, daughter Misa Bharati, Officers of Central Railways namely Sowmya Raghvan the then General Manager, Kamal Deep Mainrai, the then Chief Personnel Officer, and residents of VillageMahjabagh, Patna and VillageBindaul, Bihta, Patna and Patna City namely Raj Kumar Singh, Mithlesh Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Dharmendra Kumar, Vikas Kumar, Abhishek Kumar, Ravindra Ray, Kiran Devi, Akhileshwar Singh, Ramashish Singh.
According to the CBI, all the candidates after their engagement as substitutes were subsequently regularized.
In lieu of getting them appointed in Railways, Lalu Prasad Yadav got the lands transferred owned by candidates and their family members in the names of his wife Rabri Devi and Misha Bharti for sale consideration which was much lesser than the prevailing circle rates as well as the prevailing market rates.
Earlier, the court while taking cognizance of the chargesheet said, after going through the charge sheet and the documents and material on record, prima facie shows the commission of offences under Section 120B read with Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 IPC and Sections 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 (2) read with Section 13 (1) (d) of PC Act, 1988 and substantive offences thereof. Accordingly, cognizance is taken of the said offences.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed the chargesheet in October last year, against former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi, their daughter Misa Bharti and 13 others in the land-for-jobs scam.
Chargesheet stated that "During the investigation, it has been found that the accused in conspiracy with the then GM Central Railways and CPO, Central Railways engaged persons as substitutes in lieu of land either in their name or in the name of their close relatives. This land was acquired at prices lower than the prevailing circle rate and much lower than the market rate. It was also alleged that the candidates have used false TC and submitted false attested documents to the Ministry of Railways," the CBI claimed in a press statement.
The alleged scam occurred when Yadav was Railway Minister between 2004 and 2009. Apart from the RJD leader, the chargesheet also includes the name of the then Railway General Manager.
CBI stated that the investigation had revealed that the candidates were considered for their engagement without any need for Substitutes and there was no urgency for their appointment which was one of the main criteria behind the engagement of Substitutes and joined their duties much later from the approval of their appointment and they were subsequently regularised. There were several anomalies found in the applications of the candidates and the documents that were enclosed due to which the applications should not have been processed and their engagement should not have been approved but it was done. Further, in most cases, the candidates joined their jobs in their respective divisions on many later dates which defeated the purpose of appointment of Substitutes in some cases, the candidates could not clear their medical examination under the required category to which their engagement was made and subsequently, they were considered and appointed on the posts where inferior or lower medical category was required, said the CBI.
