Srinagar: A part of an under-construction tunnel has collapsed on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, trapping at least 13 labourers, three of whom were rescued, officials said on Friday. The incident occurred late on Thursday night and the rescue operation was in full swing. Officials said the three rescued workers have been admitted to hospitals. "Around 10.15 pm on Thursday, the audit tunnel of T3 on the highway near Khooni Nallah in Ramban collapsed, trapping 11-12 labourers of Sarla Company working there," a senior official told PTI.The rescue operation started at midnight and was going on in full swing with rock breakers being used to reach the trapped people, he said, adding one of the three injured have been taken to the Government Medical College hospital in Jammu.Union minister Jitendra Singh termed the collapse of a part of the under-construction tunnel on the national highway stretch between Ramban and Ramsu "unfortunate".<img src="https://im.rediff.com/news/2022/may/20tunnel1.jpg?w=670&amp;h=900">"I'm in constant touch with DC Mussrat Islam. Nearly 10 labour workers were trapped under the debris. Another two were rescued and hospitalised with injuries. Rescue operations going on in full swing. Civil administration and police authorities are monitoring the situation," he said.Those trapped inside the tunnel are West Bengal residents Jadav Roy (23) Gautam Roy (22), Sudhir Roy (31), Dipak Roy (33) and Parimal Roy (38), Shiva Chowhn (26) from Assam, Nepali citizens Nawaraj Chowdhury (26) and Kushi Ram (25), and Jammu and Kashmir residents Muzaffar (38) and Israt (30), officials said.<img src="https://im.rediff.com/news/2022/may/20tunnel3.jpg">The hospitalised include Vishnu Gola (33) of Jharkhand and Ameen (26) of Jammu and Kashmir. Lucknow: A labourer was killed and four others injured after the shuttering of an under-construction forensics institute collapsed in state capital Lucknow's Sarojini Nagar, Police said.
The incident took place on Monday evening.
The victim has been identified as Akram a.k.a. Anwar Ali. He was rushed to the trauma centre at King George's Medical University where he died during treatment. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has constituted a three-member committee comprising the Principal Secretary, Additional Director General and Chief engineer of the Public Works department to investigate the incident.
He also directed the officials to release compensation to Akram's family. Police said the identity of those injured is yet to be ascertained. —IANS

Joshimath: A roof of a house, which had already developed cracks, collapsed in Joshimath's Singhdhar.
The area has been badly affected by land subsidence. The house collapsed on Sunday and its courtyard has also sunk considerably.
This has posed a new threat to the surrounding residential buildings.
However, the families living here had already been shifted to a primary school, Milan Centre among other places, by the administration. The house owner, Dinesh Lal had been shifted out of his house on January 3. However, the house where he has taken shelter has also developed cracks.
An affected local said that the cracks had been increasing rapidly in the area.
He said that 2-2.5 feet cracks had developed in the houses and in the fields here.
Vishveshwari Devi, a resident of Singhdhar, said the administration shifted her to a camp after her house developed cracks, but no security arrangements had been made for her cattle even after the cowshed was affected by the subsidence.
She added that she somehow managed to look after her two milch cows and two calves in the day but is scared of something happening to them at night. —IANS

Chamoli: An iron bridge on the Dhauliganga river, connecting Niti Valley in Chamoli district snapped suddenly, officials of the Border Roads Organization said on Sunday. Colonel Ankur Mahajan, Commander of the Border Roads Organization posted at Joshimath, said that at around 4.30 pm today, the Valley Bridge on the Dhauliganga River connecting Niti Valley in Burans near Malari suddenly snapped. He said that a truck also fell down into the river due to the incident. However, there is no loss of life, he added. "After receiving the information about the incident BRO officials rushed to the spot and the construction of the bridge has been started," he said. He added that the vehicles have been diverted to an alternative route. "A causeway is being constructed on Dhauliganga for the movement, which will be completed by tomorrow," BRO said. Kaushambi: A 40-year-old woman was killed and three others were taken ill as a mound of earth they were digging for household work collapsed on them in this Uttar Pradesh district, police said on Saturday.
The incident occurred within the Kokhraj police station limits, they added.
Natthi Devi (40) and three other women hailing from Kasia Pashchim village had gone to fetch mud from outside the village on Friday for painting a house when the mound they were digging collapsed on them, Kokhraj Station House Officer (SHO) Vinod Kumar Maurya said.
The villagers present nearby rushed to the spot and informed the police, who with the help of the villagers pulled all four out of the debris, but by then Natthi Devi (40) had died, the officer said.
The three other women have been admitted to a private hospital where they are undergoing treatment. —PTI&nbsp;

Dehradun: A part of the famous Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple in Uttarakhand's Dehradun has collapsed following incessant rain.  Devotees, who came to the temple to offer prayers on the occasion of Monday of Sawan, faced problems as the way leading to the temple's entrance was partially blocked due to the falling of trees. Earlier on Wednesday, as many as 15 houses collapsed and seven cowsheds were completely destroyed in subsidence and landslides at Jakhan village, part of Madrasu gram panchayat on Langha Road, near Dehradun.  Jakhan village is home to about 15 families, comprising 50 people. However, no loss of life was reported in these incidents, officials informed. Heavy rains also disrupted normal life in the Kaluwala area of Dehradun last week. Rainwater entered the houses and caused waterlogging on the streets.  According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), information was received from the Disaster Control Room that incessant rainfall had created major waterlogging in the streets and that rainwater had also entered people's homes in Dehradun's Kaluwala area, disrupting daily life. Earlier, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in the state and also reviewed the increasing water level of the Ganga river in Rishikesh.  Heavy rains in Uttarakhand this monsoon have triggered landslides and flash floods in several places. —ANI

Aizawl: At least 18 workers were killed and five others missing after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed in Mizoram’s Aizawl district on Wednesday, police said.  Three persons were injured in the incident that occurred around 10 am in Sairang area, about 21 km from state-capital Aizawl, they said.  Most of the victims are believed to be from Pukuria, English Bazar and Manikchak in West Bengal’s Malda district, a senior official of the eastern state said.  “Sixteen bodies have been recovered from the debris so far, while two others are yet to be retrieved. Five workers are reported missing,” IGP (Law &amp; Order) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said.  Rescue and relief efforts are underway, he said.  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she has instructed officials to coordinate with the Mizoram government for assistance in the rescue operation.  The Railways said the accident was due to the collapse of a gantry, which was being launched on the under-construction bridge over Kurung river.  A high-level committee has been constituted to probe the incident involving the under-construction bridge, one of the 130 bridges in the Bhairavi-Sairang New Railway Line project.  In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the family members of the deceased, and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the victims.  “Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.  “An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured,” the Prime Minister’s Office said on X.  Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said he was deeply saddened over the loss of lives in the incident, and expressed gratitude to all those who helped in the rescue operation.  “Under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; at least 17 workers died: Rescue under progress. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations,” he posted on X.  Earlier, Banerjee expressed “shock” over the bridge collapse, and said compensation for the families of the victims would soon be announced.  “Shocked to learn about the tragic collapse today of an under-construction railway bridge in Mizoram, leading to loss of lives of several site workers, including some belonging to our Malda district,” she wrote on X.  “Have instructed my chief secretary to coordinate with Mizoram administration at once for rescue/assistance operations. Malda district administration has been asked to reach out to the bereaved families for extending all possible help. We shall give due compensation asap to the next of kin of the affected families. Solidarity to the distressed, condolences to the families of the deceased. Situation under watch,” Banerjee added.  Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the workers.  He also announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 50,000 for those who suffered minor injuries.
