Chennai :&nbsp;Six passengers, including two women, were killed and ten others injured in a road accident near Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu on Friday.The accident occurred when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus rammed into rear side of a container truck on the national highway between Chennai and Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu at around 7.45 a.m., an eye witnesses said.The bus was en route Chidambaram from Chennai. The impact of the collision was such that the left portion of the bus was ripped away.Police rushed to the spot and organised ambulances to transport the injured persons to the government hospital in Chengalpattu. --- IANS

Chennai (The Hawk): Three sisters, including two ladies, were asphyxiated to death in the early hours of Friday in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu.
V. Girija (63), her sister S. Girija, and others were listed as the deceased. Rajkumar, their brother, and Radha, age 55 (48).
Bhargavi, Rajkumar's wife, and Aaradhana, his daughter, are both admitted to the hospital.
According to the police, the family travelled to Chengalpattu to observe the first death anniversary rites for Girija's late husband Venkataraman, who died last year from sickness.
Girija, who was residing in Dubai with her son, returned to the Guduvanchery family flat on November 2 and her siblings and family moved in on Thursday. When a violent explosion in the refrigerator happened, the family was about to leave for their place of employment when the three asphyxiated and died.
While the three siblings slept in the living room, Bhargavi and Aaradhana slept in the bedroom. Bhargavi and Aaradhana also died from suffocation in the smoke that enveloped them when the refrigerator exploded. They broke open the flat's door after the neighbour heard their calls for assistance.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, doctors at the Guduvanchery police station pronounced Rajkumar, Girija, and Radha dead. When brought to the hospital, Bhargavi and Aaradhana were both unconscious; they are currently making a full recovery.
The siblings' remains are deposited in the mortuary of the government hospital in Chengalpattu.
An FIR has been filed by the Guduvanchery police, and an inquiry has begun.

According to IMD, the weather system is forecast to travel into Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, where it may bring heavy to very severe rain, particularly in Chennai and neighbouring areas.
According to the statement, "a low-pressure area has formed over the same region and the cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above sea level over Southwest Bay of Bengal and bordering equatorial Indian ocean."
The cyclonic circulation is expected to become more noticeable during the following 48 hours and proceed toward the northwest, bringing heavy to very severe rains, according to the weather service.
IMD reports that Chennai district received 459.4 mm of rain within the same time period, representing a 13% increase in rains above Tamil Nadu's 237.7 mm shortfall since October 1.
In the upcoming 48 hours, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms and lightning across Chennai and the surrounding regions.

After the IMD predicted that it would rain a lot, schools in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, and Ranipet were given the day off.
The weather service has also issued a red alert for November 11 for the districts of Ranipet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram. On November 12, Dindigul, Theni, and The Nilgiris were given a Red alert. In the next 24 hours, this will happen because of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
Some places in these districts are likely to get heavy to very heavy or even extremely heavy rain on November 11 and 12.
In the next 48 hours, there are likely to be thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to very heavy rains in and around Chennai. In the next 48 hours, the city has been given an orange alert.
In a related event, the water from Chembarambakkam lake has been let out, flooding several suburbs of Chennai, such as Iyyappanthangal, Porur, and Mangad.
Since more rain is expected, officials in the Kancheepuram district said that water could not be pumped out and that water would eventually drain out.
When it rains in the district, activists and social workers said that this happens all the time. R. Balakrishnan, a Porur activist and social worker, told IANS, "This is becoming routine, and even though many requests and petitions have been sent, nothing has happened to widen the canals that connect to the Porur lake."

Chennai: The death toll in the spurious liquor tragedy of Tamil Nadu has risen to 18.

While 12 people died in Marakkanam of Villupuram district, six succumbed in Chengalpattu district.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the places on Monday and announced a CB-CID investigation into the matter. Several officers of the local police have been suspended in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.

The Chief Minister also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the family of each of the deceased while an amount of Rs 50,000 is sanctioned for those who were admitted to hospitals after they consumed spurious liquor.

As per the preliminary investigation, it was found that the tragedy at Marakkanam in the Villupuram district occurred when some people consumed locally brewed liquor. However, in the Chengalpattu district, the liquor that caused the deaths was diluted industrial alcohol with Methanol content in it.

AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palaniswami(EPS) will be visiting the area on Tuesday.

EPS, while interacting with media persons, said that the liquor tragedy was a clear indicator of the failure of the law and order situation in the state.

He said that during the 10 years of the previous AIADMK government, there were no instances of deaths by consuming spurious liquor.

The former Chief Minister said that this was due to the efficient handling of the law and order situation in the state during the AIADMK regime.

EPS, who is also the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, said that during the previous assembly session, he had intimated the government on reports about spurious liquor availability in various areas of the state. IANS

Chennai: Amid concerns over rising Covid-19 cases in the state, the Tamil Nadu health department has issued an alert to contain the spreading virus.

On Tuesday, the number of fresh infections rose to 13, which was almost double the previous day's figure.

While three persons in Chennai and two in Coimbatore tested positive for Covid-19, one each tested positive in Chengalpattu, Salem, the Nilgiris, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Vellore as per the Directorate of Public Health , Tamil Nadu.

Two persons who arrived at Chennai from UAE and Singapore also tested positive.

The state public health department has directed the district health officers to tighten its vigil.

However, 16 persons recovered from the disease on Tuesday and presently 89 are under treatment.

No casualties were reported in the state due to Covid-19.

State Health Minister, Ma Subramanian while speaking to IANS said, "There is no need to worry but we are being cautious. An alert has been issued to all the district health officers for any symptoms of the cases. We are well equipped." IANS

Chennai: Three children of a family succumbed to burns due to a fire accident caused by a suspected gas leak in their house in Chengalpattu near here, police said on Saturday.
The mother of the kids, who also sustained severe burn injuries is undergoing treatment at the Kilpauk Government Medical College Hospital here.  A police official said the fire could have been caused due to a gas leak. The migrant family from Bihar had a stove on the floor and there were no windows in the house. After meeting her husband at his workplace near the Chengalpattu railway station, the woman returned home along with her three children on Thursday and turned on the lights, the official said.
“No sooner she turned on the switch than the gas got ignited and a fire broke out. Neighbours rushed to their help hearing their screams and all the four were rushed to the Chengalpattu government hospital,” he said.  The children aged seven and five and the toddler succumbed on Friday while their mother was referred to the Kilpauk Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.  The Chengalpattu police have registered a case.
