Sivankutty and five others to be present before it on September 14, when the charge sheet of the case against them for allegedly indulging in vandalism in the Assembly in 2015 comes up.When the case came up in the local court here, the court, seeing none of the accused leaders present, passed an order asking all the accused to be present on September 14 when the charge sheet would be read out.The Kerala government had previously approached the Supreme Court seeking withdrawal of the criminal cases against these six leaders, but it ruled that there is no immunity or privilege to protect legislators indulging in vandalism during a House session.The apex court had asked all of them to face trial.This had created a political furore with the Congress and the BJP demanding Sivankutty's resignation, but the CPI-M rejected it.Of the six accused, Sivankutty and former minister K.T. Jaleel are members of the present Assembly. The other accused are Left Democratic Front convenor E.P. Jayarajan, C.K. Sadasivan, Kunhuahmed Master, and K. Ajith.They all were charged under the prevention of damage to public property act and other provisions.Told about the court order, Sivankutty said if the court has said so, he will be present in the court on that day.The Assembly had witnessed violent scenes in March 2015, after the then Left opposition tried to prevent the then Finance Minister K.M. New Delhi (The Hawk): In reference to the vandalism of courts and disruption of court proceedings in various areas of the state, the Supreme Court stated orally on Wednesday that it would send paramilitary forces if the Odisha Police were unable to maintain control of the situation.The Director General of Police for Odisha and the Inspector General for Sambalpur were informed by a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S. Oka that if police are unable to handle the situation, the court will order paramilitary forces to deal with it.The bench added that it would punish anyone, including members of the legal profession, who damaged courts and caused disruptions in various areas of Odisha "quite harshly."The top court was notified by the Bar Council of India (BCI) that 43 protesting attorneys from the Sambalpur District Bar Association had been suspended for allegedly participating in vandalism. The highest court ruled that individuals who used violence should have FIRs filed against them and should be prosecuted.It said, "We are going to come down hard and will be very harsh."Police officials informed the bench that 15 police platoons had been deployed following the most recent decision of the highest court and that a three-tier security system had been installed around the district court.The bench expressed dissatisfaction with this attitude and threatened to use paramilitary forces if the police were unable to control the scene. The DGP informed the court that everything were now under control.The bench made a note during the hearing that the desire for a permanent state high court bench in western Odisha seemed to have turned into a prestige issue. The bench declared that, even if there had been a slim chance, it had been eliminated by the lawyers' actions.The DGP and IG reassured the court that no interference with the conduct of the court will be permitted.The matter will be heard again by the top court in February.(Inputs from Agencies)

Victoria (Seychelles): The Indian mission in Seychelles has condemned the vandalism of the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela located at the Peace Park in the capital city of Victoria.
"The High Commission of India condemns the mindless act of vandalism of statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela located at the Peace Park in Victoria," the Indian mission said in a statement on January 6.
The statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled at Peace Park, Victoria in June, 2022, according to the Indian mission. The statue was placed next to one of Sir James Macham, the founding President of Seychelles, and Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader who served as the first president of South Africa.
The Indian mission said Mahatma Gandhi's message of humanity and peaceful struggle against colonialism is universally relevant and has inspired non-violent struggle worldwide.
"His statue at the Peace Park is also symbolic of the historic, warm and cordial ties between India and Seychelles," the statement added.
The High Commission thanked the Seychelles authorities for their action and expressed hope that the perpetrators would be apprehended expeditiously.
There have been other incidents of vandalism of Bapu's statue in other parts of the world. In August last year, a handcrafted statue of Mahatma Gandhi was destroyed by six men in New York City. Before that in February 2022, Gandhi's life-sized statue at Union Square near Manhattan was vandalised.
Both acts were strongly condemned by the Indian mission, triggering shock and disappointment among the Indian-American community. —ANI

MEA Spokesperson A. Arindam Bagchi said, "We strongly condemn the statement issued by OIC Secretariat today regarding India. This is one more example of their communal mindset and anti-India agenda. OIC only does its reputation damage by being consistently manipulated by anti-India forces."

The OIC statement had expressed deep concern over the "violence" and "vandalism targeting Muslim community" in several states in India during the Ram Navami processions, including the burning of a madrasa and its library by an extremist Hindu mob in Bihar Sharif on March 31.

"The OIC General Secretariat denounces such provocative acts of violence and vandalism, which are a vivid manifestation of mounting Islamophobia and systemic targeting of the Muslim community in India. The OIC General Secretariat calls upon the Indian authorities to take firm actions against the instigators and perpetrators of such acts and to ensure the safety, security, rights, and dignity of the Muslim community in the country." it said. Lahore: The miscreants involved in vandalism on May 9 in Pakistan following the arrest of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan include doctors and engineers too, media reports said.
During a press conference held by the police in Lahore, it was revealed that over 1, 700 individuals involved in acts of arson and vandalism have been arrested following the arrest of Imran Khan, Samaa TV reported.
Some 38 cases have been registered, with Imran Khan being named as the accused in approximately 80 per cent of these cases, the report said.
Pakistan Punjab Police DIG (Operations) Kamran Adil disclosed that even professionals such as doctors and engineers were among the rioters and troublemakers.
He said the vandals entered the Jinnah House using three different routes.
The PTI Tiger Force, along with the local party leadership, played a role in mobilising people for the violence, he added, Samaa TV reported.
Adil said that the anarchy was created as part of a conspiracy which was executed according to a well-planned strategy.
The officer claimed that despite the tense situation, no deaths were reported.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday while expressing dismay over the recent events unfolding since May 9, deeming them a disgraceful episode for Pakistan, emphasised that strict action should be taken against the culprits involved in orchestrating acts of arson, creating unrest, and inciting riots, ensuring their arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.
An important meeting of the National Security Committee took place under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, which was attended by General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff, heads of the armed forces, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Azam Khan, Chief Minister of Punjab Syed Mohsin Naqvi, and several other high-ranking civil and military officials.
During the meeting, Sharif expressed his concerns regarding the incidents that occurred at the GHQ and Mianwali Air Base, Samaa TV reported.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police's Special Cell has detained two men from Punjab over charges for defacing walls at five Delhi Metro stations with pro-Khalistani messages, officials said on Thursday.  A video purportedly released by the banned organisation Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) displayed the vandalised metro station walls.  In the video, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, spokesperson for SFJ, said: "During the G20 Summit in Delhi on September 10, we will be orchestrating a Khalistan referendum in Canada."
A senior police official said that the apprehended individual is currently being interrogated.  Previously, the police had reported that unidentified individuals had vandalised the walls of the Shivaji Park, Madipur, Paschim Vihar, Udyog Nagar, and Maharaja Surajmal Stadium metro stations with the slogans "Delhi Banega Khalistan" and "Khalistan Zindabad".  A government school wall in Nangloi had also been defaced.  This G20 Summit in Delhi will take place on September 9-10.

Toronto: In a latest attack on Hindu places of worship in Canada, a prominent temple in the British Columbia province has been vandalised with anti-India and pro-Khalistan graffiti.
The outer walls of Shree Mata Bhameshwari Durga Society Mandir in Surrey were spray painted on Thursday with slogans reading, “Punjab is not India” and “Modi is a terrorist”.
“A Hindu temple Shree Mata Bhameshwari Durga Devi Society has been vandalised with black spray paint. These kinds of cowardly attacks are on rise to create terror amongst the community,” Sameer Kaushal, News Director at Radio AM600 in Richmond, wrote on X.
Kaushal said that the Surrey detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have been notified about the incident.
The development comes just ahead of a Khalistan Referendum event, scheduled for September 10, and threats from banned group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) to “lock down” India’s Consulate in Vancouver.
The referendum event, scheduled to take place at a school in Surrey, was cancelled after images of weapons on the poster were brought to the school authorities’ notice by concerned residents.
The poster featured a kirpan (dagger) as well as an AK-47 machine gun, along with the name of SFJ.
It also had pictures of Khalistani leaders Hardip Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead in June at a parking lot in Surrey and Talwinder Singh Parmar, the mastermind of the 1985 Air India Flight bombing.
Despite New Delhi registering strong protests, an anti-India campaign continues in Canada with pro-Khalistani graffiti and posters targeting Indian diplomats and temples across the country.
Last month, anti-India and pro-Khalistan posters were found pasted on the front and rear walls of the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey.
Beginning this year, the BAPS Swaminarayan temple in Ontario and the Gauri Shankar temple in Brampton were targeted in April and January with anti-India graffiti.
Canadian authorities are investigating them as “hate-motivated incidents”.&nbsp;

New York: A prominent Hindu temple in the US state of California has been vandalised by pro-Khalistan elements with anti-Modi graffiti, leaving the members of the community in shock.  The walls of Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Newark, Bay Area, were spray painted on Friday with graffiti targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and eulogising Khalistan leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.  "Whatever happened last night was a clear act of vandalism and violence against the Indian community," Chintan Pandya, a member of the temple, told CBS News.  He said the incident is "concerning" as it is the first time the temple has seen something like this ever since its opening almost two years ago.  "It is not safe for the community," Pandya said, adding that the temple leaders will be having a special meeting to discuss the incident.  US-based advocacy organisation, Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), said a thorough and urgent action is needed to address growing Hinduphobia in the region.  "Freedom of religion means little when sacred spaces that are meant to be an oasis of peace and calm, are vandalised with no consequences. We are sad but not shocked -- authorities, media and other groups have regularly downplayed or ignored the growing #Hinduphobia in the region," CoHNA said in a post on X on Friday.  "People who put those symbols and names up...what they are promoting is a separate state of Khalistan... So if those people who did this want that, that's something that I think most Americans, most Indians, most Hindus don't want," Mihir Meghani, co-founder of Hindu American Foundation, told CBS News.  Meghani said the Indian-American community in the Bay Area is growing, and these political issues are now becoming a part of the division here.  The incident comes just after the US Justice Department unsealing an indictment against an Indian national for his alleged involvement in a foiled plot to kill New York-based Khalistan leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the third convocation of the Rashtriya Raksha University here.
"I have seen the news. As you know, we are concerned about this. Extremists and separatist forces outside India should not get space. Our consulate has lodged a complaint with the (US) government and the police there over whatever happened, and I believe the matter is being inquired," Jaishankar said in response to a query about the incident.  The police department in Newark, California said that at approximately 8.35 am on Friday, they received a report of graffiti at Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu temple. According to images posted on social media, the word 'Khalistan' was spray-painted on a signpost outside the temple along with other objectionable graffiti.  The Newark police said any acts or threats of violence, property damage, harassment, intimidation, or other crimes motivated by hate or bias are considered very serious and given very high priority. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco strongly condemned the defacing of the temple.  Talking about the arrest of Nikhil Gupta in Czech Republic over accusation that he was planning to assassinate US-based pro-Khalistan activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in collaboration with an Indian official, the Union minister said the Indian embassy was provided consular access to him (by that country's government).  'Whenever an Indian citizen is arrested, we seek consular access for their care which we have received thrice,' he said.  Over the absence of USA and Canada from the list of partner countries for the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, Jaishankar said he would not put any political meaning to this.  "At the government level, it depends who we invite...The government of Gujarat can answer (over invitation to the countries). I would not put any political meaning," the minister said.  "My understanding is opposite, which is that in fact many counties are calling us to participate in Vibrant Gujarat. We ask them to talk to the government of Gujarat. We would like to support it because we would like to see maximum participants," he said.

The US State Department's statement comes after the suspected pro-Khalistan activists allegedly defaced the Swaminarayan Temple in California's Newark, police said, adding that the incident came to light on Friday (local time). The exterior wall of the Hindu temple was defaced with anti-India graffiti. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco on Saturday condemned the defacement of the Swaminarayan Mandir in California with anti-India graffiti It called for quick investigation and prompt action on the matter from the US authorities. In a post shared on X, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco stated, "We strongly condemn the defacing of SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at Newark, California with anti-India graffiti. This incident has hurt the sentiments of the Indian community. We have pressed for quick investigation and prompt action against the vandals by the US authorities in this matter."  The Newark Police Service has started an investigation into the incident. According to the temple administration, the vandalism took place on Thursday night. "One of the devotees, who lives close to the shrine, discovered anti-Hindu and anti-India graffiti in black ink on an exterior wall of the building, and the local administration was immediately informed," Bhargav Raval, the spokesperson for the temple administration, told ANI. The spokesperson further said the temple authorities were 'shocked' to find the anti-Indian graffiti on its wall. Sharing more details regarding the incident, Jonathan Arguello, a police captain for the city of Newark, said the 'targeted act' was being investigated. "Based on the graffiti, we believe it was a targeted act, and it's going to be investigated with full thoroughness. I can also tell you that as a member of the Newark Police Department and the Newark community, we're deeply saddened when these types of acts occur, and we think they're senseless and they have no room. We won't tolerate them here in Newark. So today, I wanted to make sure that you understand how seriously we take these situations and know that we will investigate as thoroughly as possible with utmost care and sensitivity. I can also tell you that officers are currently investigating this via evidence collection," the captain told reporters during a press conference.  The police official said to piece together the chain of events leading to the act of defacement, the footage from surveillance cameras in the neighbouring residences was being looked into. "Our policies that any acts of violence or threats of violence, property damage, harassment, intimidation, or other crimes motivated by hate or bias are considered very serious and given the utmost care. We're handling this investigation as a hate crime at this point, based on our conversations with you and the physical evidence we've seen," he said. This is not the first such incident where a temple has been defaced with such graffiti in the recent past. The incident comes close on the heels of the US Justice Department unsealing an indictment against an Indian national for his alleged involvement in a foiled plot to assassinate India-designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. The Justice Department claimed that an Indian government employee (named CC-1), who was not identified in the indictment filed in a federal court in Manhattan, recruited an Indian national named Nikhil Gupta to hire a hitman to carry out the assassination, which was foiled by US authorities, according to prosecutors. Gupta is currently in custody and has been charged with murder-for-hire, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Czech authorities arrested and detained Gupta on June 30, pursuant to the bilateral extradition treaty between the US and the Czech Republic. Reacting to the Justice Department's indictment, the Ministry of External Affairs said the case filed against an individual in a US court, allegedly linking him to an Indian official, was a "matter of concern" and is contrary to government policy.  "We cannot share any further information on such security matters. As regards the case against an individual that has been filed in a US court allegedly linking him to an Indian official, this is a matter of concern. We have said and let me reiterate that this is contrary to government policy" the MEA spokesperson said. Earlier in September, Khalistanis allegedly attacked the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. Videos of supporters breaking the doors and barging into the office surfaced on social media. Visuals shared online showed a mob brandishing Khalistan flags mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash the glass doors and windows of the consulate building. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans as they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises.

Pune: As many as ten BJP workers were arrested on Saturday in connection with an attack on senior Marathi journalist Nikhil Wagle in Pune city, an incident which also drew condemnation from the The Editors Guild of India which urged the Maharashtra government to take action against the culprits. Opposition Congress said the attack on the 'outspoken journalist' reflected the collapse of law and order in the state.
A day after a car carrying Wagle and others to a public meeting came under attack, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Parvati police station in the city on Saturday evening, said a police official.
The accused were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (rioting), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon or means), 336 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety), 427 (causing damage to property) and other relevant provisions, he said.  Protesting against the senior journalist's comments about the Narendra Modi government conferring the country's highest civilian honour `Bharat Ratna' on BJP veteran L K Advani, alleged BJP activists vandalised a car in which Wagle and activists Aseem Sarode and Vishwambhar Choudhary were travelling under police protection to the 'Nirbhay Bano' public meeting organised by Rashtra Seva Dal on Friday evening.  The complaint filed by a woman, on which the FIR was based, claimed that she and a few others were protecting Wagle's car even as some BJP workers hurled stones at the vehicle and injured them.
Arrested workers were identified as Deepak Pote, Ganesh Ghosh, Ganesh Sherla, Raghvendra Mankar, Swapnil Naik, Pratik Desarda, Dushyant Mohol, Datta Sagre, Girish Mankar and Rahul Paygude.  Police also registered a case against Wagle and Pune city unit presidents of the BJP, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress for allegedly violating section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. 'The case was registered against them as the event (`Nirbhay Bano' public meeting) was being held without police permission,' said Sambhaji Kadam, deputy commissioner of police.  Earlier, another case had been registered against Wagle for allegedly making offensive remarks against PM Modi and Advani under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 500 (defamation) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) at Vishrambaug police station on a complaint lodged by BJP leader Sunil Deodhar.  In a statement issued from the national capital, the The Editors Guild of India condemned the attack on the journalist.  'The Editors Guild calls on the administration in Pune and the Maharashtra government to book the guilty,' it said.  It also noted that FIRs were registered against Wagle over his statement, and expressed deep concern about the 'misuse of criminal laws against journalists in an effort to intimidate and harass them.' 'We urge law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint before registering complaints against journalists as an FIR, lest the process of investigation becomes a punishment itself,' the Guild said.  In a post on X in Hindi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, 'Law and order has collapsed under the Maharashtra government formed by the BJP's stealing of mandate.' 'A politician is being brutally murdered on Facebook Live. An outspoken journalist is being attacked by unruly goons of the BJP-RSS. A BJP MLA is openly shooting at another politician in the police station,' Kharge said.

He was referring to the murder of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Abhishek Ghosalkar in Mumbai and an incident in Thane district earlier this month where BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad opened fire inside a police station and injured a worker of the Shiv Sena.  Kharge further said that economic development of Maharashtra became possible because Congress governments maintained law and order, but the BJP government 'formed with the force of the Enforcement Directorate' was playing with the security of the people of Maharashtra by spreading 'goonda raj'.

Kolkata: Police on Sunday arrested ISF leader Ayesha Bibi from the Sandeshkhali area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district for her alleged involvement in burning poultry firms of arrested local TMC leader Shibaprasad Hazra, an officer said.
Police also detained a few villagers for their alleged involvement in vandalism there, he added.
"We have found her involvement in burning one property during an agitation in Sandeshkhali. She has taken up law and order in her own hands which will not be allowed. We are following the provisions in the law for such involvement," the police officer told PTI.
