Kolkata (The Hawk): The repeated fatalities of spotted deer at Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri, West Bengal's Darjeeling district, have caused heads to start rolling.
On Friday, IANS reported that as many as 27 spotted deer perished within a period of just two months at the Bengal Safari Park purportedly due to extreme negligence on part of the safari park authorities. The state forest agency has already announced the transfer of the safari park's director and assistant director before 24 hours had even passed since that time.
State Forest Minister Jyotipriyo Mullick confirmed the moves and claimed that the Bengali Safari Park's director and assistant directors had been fired. He added that he had taken the situation very seriously. To determine the cause of the high number of deer fatalities and to provide solutions to prevent similar tragedies in the future, a full investigation has been requested, according to Mullick.
According to information, Kamal Sarkar, who is now the divisional forest officer for the Raiganj division, has taken over as director of the Bengal Safari Park from Dawa Sangmu Sherpa.
Similar to this, Anuradha Rai, the assistant director of the Bengal Safari Park, has been moved to Darjeeling's planning &amp; working division's records section.
The authorities of Bengal Safari Park were accused of disobeying repeated requests from organisations dedicated to protecting wildlife to repair the fencing walls surrounding the deer enclosure on the property of the safari park. Deer apparently used to escape the enclosure and eat leftover food close to the staff canteen and mushrooms, which led to food illness. This was reportedly because of the broken fencing walls.
An Australian kangaroo named Alex, who was saved from the wildlife smugglers in north Bengal and taken refuge in Bengal Safari Park, reportedly passed away last week from food illness after eating mushrooms.
The number of spotted deer in the park has decreased from over 750 a year ago to under 700 as of this writing, with the majority of deaths taking place over the past two months, according to IANS' report on Friday.

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh (The Hawk): At a private guest house in the Chhatnag area of Prayagraj, stray dogs killed 21 spotted deer and one chinkara by mauling them.
The incident occurred earlier this week, but the officials kept it under wraps for two days, examined the dead deer, and only made a statement once the media knew of it.
The private company responsible for caring for the deer has been accused of violating the Wildlife Protection Act.
On the 70-acre guest home on the banks of the Ganga, deer were being raised.
According to reports, Universal Cable Company Limited received authorization to raise deer on the private land in 1988. The company was granted full authority to take care of the deer.
The forest department officials have detained three people, including the security guard and the deer keeper, for questioning. A thorough investigation has also been ordered.
Investigations also turned up two tiny drain hole locations on the campus that provided the stray canines with an appropriate entrance. The possibility that the dogs may have scaled the border wall was also considered.
Three individuals, including security officer Awadhesh Kumar, deer keeper Lal Chandra Yadav, and security guard Jung Bahadur, have been detained by the forest department for questioning, according to Prayagraj district forest officer Mahaveer Kaujalgi.
The forest department has filed a lawsuit under section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act against four people, including the management of the guest house, the security officer, the deer keeper, and a security guard employed by a private company.
According to Kaujalgi, a notification has also been delivered to the Universal Cable Company Ltd. officials, who were given full authority to take care of the deer.
"We are examining the security measures in place on and around the campus, as well as the region's access to the CCTV network. The district police authority and the forest department are working together on the investigation, "DFO stated.

Lucknow: Emphasising the protection of wildlife and promoting a greener environment, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said that special parks should be developed in the midst of forests for the protection of the state animal, swamp deer (Barasingha) and state bird, sarus crane.
"We have to create new wetlands around Ganga and Yamuna. Forests have to be developed in the form of eco-tourism. Special parks should be developed in the midst of forests for the protection of the state animal Barasingha and the state bird Sarus. We have to take all these works forward with a positive spirit," he said.
Addressing an event organised by the Forest Department, Adityanath said, "The department should work with a positive spirit to develop the forests in the form of eco-tourism. Cleanliness of the water bodies present in the forests and plantation campaigns on their banks should be promoted on a large scale. Such departments must be identified which cause maximum damage to the environment and natural resources and prepare a way to utilise their CSR funds for environmental protection." On the occasion, the Chief Minister flagged off the motorcycles and scooters provided to the Forest Department from the CSR fund by Hero Motor Corp. Ltd.
Earlier, the CM interacted with the players who participated in the 26th All India Forest Sports Competition and received medals.
In this national competition, the team of the Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh received 12 gold, 18 silver and 13 bronze medals. CM Yogi also released the Coffee Table Book of Tree Plantation Mass Movement 2022 on this occasion.
Stating that the Forest Department has a huge responsibility, the CM said, "Today, amidst scare in the world regarding the deteriorating condition of the earth, taking the lead in environmental protection is the biggest necessity. It is today's most important need to save not only human beings but also the entire living world from the ill effects of climate change."
"250 motorcycles and 35 scooters have been provided by Hero Motorcorp from the CSR fund for the protection of wildlife and wildlife. For the first time, I am seeing that the Forest Department is making such a huge use of CSR funds. It should be our endeavour that those who are harming the environment at any level, their CSR funds are utilised for the protection of the environment and wildlife," the CM remarked.
CM Yogi further stated that in the last 6 years, more than 100 crore trees have been planted in the state, due to which the forest coverage of UP has increased.
He said, "Along with this, the number of wildlife has increased in the forests of UP. The forests which were being continuously cut down have been controlled. Illegal mining has been banned. Concrete steps have been taken for the protection of wildlife at every level. Apart from this, other programs have also taken place, in which new sites are being built for tiger reserves and wetlands are being declared."
The Chief Minister said that Jalotsav month is being announced on the occasion.
He said, "Thousands of 'amrit serovars were developed in UP, where tree plantation work was done on a large scale. We can start this work regarding the reservoirs of the forest also."
The Chief Minister urged that this time during the Van Mahotsav, a program of tree plantation should be started on a large scale on the banks of water bodies. —ANI

Chandigarh : A team from the Chandigarh Wildlife Department has rescued a Sambar deer after the animal strayed into the residential area of the city on Monday. According to T C Nautiyal, Chief Wildlife Warden, Chandigarh, "A Sambar deer, aged four to five years entered the residential area of Chandigarh today. The animal's presence created panic among locals because of the deer's huge antlers. People started running around."
"After receiving information about the animal, the Chandigarh Wildlife Team chased the animal from Sector 9 to Sector 18 and with great difficulty brought the animal under their control. The officials then rescued him and took him to the veterinary doctor for a medical checkup after which he will be released into the forest," the wildlife officer said.
Visuals showed forest officials carefully wrapping the deer in a net to take it away from the area.
The wildlife officer said that the deer had lost its way from the Sukhna Lake Sanctuary and strayed into a residential area. The official said a team of forest officials managed to rescue the animal and send it for medical treatment before releasing it into the forest. "It is very rare that Sambar deer enters the city. The weather has been bad for the last two to three days because of the rains, therefore it must have lost its way and entered the residential area. However, this isn't the first time that humans and animals have come in close contact with wildlife. In the recent past, there have been several instances where wild animals and humans have come in close contact with each other. These occurrences can often prove to be dangerous for both animals and humans. In a similar incident, earlier in January, a Sambar deer entered into a house in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, and was rescued by forest department officers. Several onlookers gathered around the house to witness the rescue operation. The post that was shared on January 21, since uploaded garnered several views and likes.
