New Delhi: Inox Wind has reported widening of its consolidated net loss to Rs 255.76 crore for the March quarter, mainly due to lower revenues. The consolidated net loss of the company stood at Rs 105.87 crore in the quarter ended March 31, 2021, it said in a BSE filing.Total income in the quarter dropped to Rs 183.92 crore from Rs 295.46 crore in the year-ago period. For the full fiscal 2021-22, the company reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 429.80 crore, as against Rs 307.12 crore loss in FY21. Total income in the fiscal too declined to Rs 708.14 crore from Rs 783.42 crore in 2020-21.—PTI

Chennai :&nbsp;Gurit Wind Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Gurit Group, has inaugurated its new plant in Tamil Nadu that was set up at an investment of Rs 250 crore, the company said on Wednesday. The facility, spread across 16 acres at Greenbase Indstrial and Logistics Park, Oragadam, near here, would generate 300 direct jobs. The plant was inaugurated by chairman of Gurit Group Rudolf Hadorn and CEO Mitja Schulz recently, a company statement said here. "The facility in Chennai will be home to all our Gurit wind-related activities like mould-making, manufacturing solutions, extrusion of recycled PET...a lot of value-addtions, which Gurit is now having, are under one roof," said Schulz. "Soon, this will be Gurit's biggest manufacturing plant on the planet," he said. Managing director of Gurit Wind Pvt Ltd Durga Prasad Amudalapalli said, "The opening of the plant is an event full of joy and emotion. New York: Just like coughing, sneezing, talking and singing, playing wind instruments -- particularly those in the brass section -- can spread respiratory particles that may carry the Covid-19 virus, according to a study.Early in the pandemic, researchers at Colorado State University teamed up with musicians and performers to try and quantify respiratory particle emissions from various activities like singing and music-playing. They were seeking to provide insight into just how much performance arts could spread Covid-19 and to inform safety measures moving forward.The findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, showed that brass instruments, on average, produced 191 per cent more aerosols than woodwinds.Being male was also associated with a 70 per cent increase in emissions from instrument-playing, probably due to lung size and capacity, the researchers think.For the instruments study, they had 81 volunteer performers of both sexes and varied ages -- between 12 and 63. The volunteers played wind instruments including the bassoon, clarinet, French horn, oboe, piccolo, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and tuba.Louder playing of brass instruments was associated with higher particle counts, but louder playing of woodwinds didn't increase emissions.The researchers also took measurements with performers using bell covers in an attempt to mitigate the particle spread, which seemed to work. The use of bell covers reduced emissions from trombone, tuba and trumpet players, with average reductions of 53-73 per cent, but not for oboe or clarinet. Professor John Volckens, a mechanical engineer and aerosols expert at CSU likened the bell covers to blue surgical masks for instruments -- good, but not great in terms of limiting spread."The data suggest that masks and bell covers cut down half to 75 per cent of particles coming out of the mouth or instrument," Volckens said. "And the reason blue surgical masks or bell covers don't work better is that they're just not a tight fit. These devices don't achieve an N95 level of protection."He also said that "if we could make N95s for instruments", it would likely help reduce emissions from brass instruments, but not from woodwinds, because those instruments have too many escape holes before the bell. A single-exit instrument like a trumpet is easier to control with protective measures, the researchers said. —IANS

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday scrapped a three-week-old tax on the export of petrol and cut windfall taxes on overseas shipments of diesel and ATF as well as on domestically produced crude oil after global oil prices fell.While the Rs 6 a litre export duty on petrol was scrapped, the tax on the export of diesel and jet fuel (ATF) was cut by Rs 2 per litre each to Rs 11 and Rs 4 respectively, government notifications showed. The tax on domestically produced crude was also cut to Rs 17,000 per tonne from Rs 23,250, a move that will benefit state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Vedanta Ltd.Also, correcting the anomaly that crept in when the windfall taxes were slapped on July 1, the government exempted fuel exports from refineries located in export-focused zones from the levies.The move will benefit Reliance Industries whose exports had become uncompetitive due to the export levies that were as high as USD 26 per barrel.Reliance was up 2.7 per cent to trade at Rs 2,507.15 on the BSE at noon. ONGC stocks also rose 4.63 per cent to Rs 133.35, while Vedanta was up 8.36 per cent at Rs 258.55. On July 13, PTI had reported that the windfall tax review was expected following a sharp fall in global oil prices. India imposed windfall taxes on July 1, joining a growing number of nations that taxes super normal profits of energy companies. But international oil prices have cooled since then, eroding profit margins at both oil producers and refiners. While international crude prices slumped on concerns of a potential global recession, cracks or margins on diesel, petrol and ATF crashed.The July 1, export duties of Rs 6 per litre on petrol and ATF translated into USD 12 per barrel, while Rs 13 a litre tax on diesel was equivalent to USD 26 a barrel. The Rs 23,250 per tonne windfall tax on domestic crude production equalled USD 40 per barrel. Post windfall tax, the realised spread on diesel and petrol fell to near loss-making levels while the realisation on aviation fuel (ATF) and crude had also gone below 15-year averages. The realised spread on petrol after considering USD 12 per barrel windfall tax was near a loss-making level of just USD 2 per barrel. Similarly, the diesel spread too was a meagre sum after considering the USD 26 per barrel export tax. For oil producers, the windfall levy took away 40 per cent of their earnings. On top of it, they also paid royalty and cess. The cut in windfall tax will benefit Reliance, which operates two oil refineries at Jamnagar in Gujarat with one focused only on exports.At the time of imposing the windfall tax, the government had stated that the objective behind the move was to shore up domestic supplies as refiners were preferring to export than to meet the local requirements.But an export levy on only-for-export refineries did not make sense as those units aren't meant to supply fuel to the domestic market. And that anomaly has now been corrected. State-owned ONGC and Oil India Ltd as well as private sector Vedanta Ltd, who account for almost all of the crude oil produced in the country, will benefit from the cut in windfall tax.Besides Reliance, Russia's Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy, which operates a 20 million tonnes a year refinery at Vadinar in Gujarat, will also benefit from the cut in the export levy.The refining spread for diesel almost halved from the USD 55-60 per barrel peak seen in June to USD 30 a barrel. Similarly, ATF spreads crashed from USD 50-55 per barrel to USD 25-30. Gasoline spreads have also been slashed from USD 30-35 per barrel last month to USD 10-15.At the same time, the Brent crude price has also cooled off by USD 15-20 per barrel in the past 2-3 weeks to about USD 100 per barrel.When the taxes were introduced, it was estimated that they would bring over Rs 1 lakh crore additional revenue in the full year. The windfall tax on crude production alone was estimated to generate revenue of Rs 65,600 crore and tax on export products another Rs 52,700 crore if they were to be continued for the full year.—PTI

New Delhi: &nbsp;The government has halved the windfall tax on the export of diesel and scrapped the levy on jet fuel (ATF) shipments but raised the tax on domestically produced crude oil.The tax on the export of diesel was cut to Rs 5 per litre from Rs 11, according to an official notification issued on Tuesday evening.Export of petrol will continue to attract nil tax.The tax on domestically produced crude oil was hiked to Rs 17,750 per tonne from Rs 17,000, a move that will hit producers like ONGC and Vedanta Ltd.The cut in taxes - the second in as many weeks - came as India's trade gap swelled to a record.The measures come hours after data showed India's trade deficit ballooned to a record high in July, as elevated commodity prices and a weak rupee inflated the country's import bill.The gap between exports and imports widened to USD 31.02 billion in July from USD 26.18 billion in June. This, as a result of exports falling and elevated commodity prices together with a weak rupee, is inflating the import bill.Imports jumped 43.59 per cent in July from the year-ago month, while exports dropped 0.76 per cent.India first imposed windfall taxes on July 1, joining a growing number of nations that taxes super normal profits of energy companies. But the levy on domestically produced crude oil has been raised in line with a marginal increase in international crude prices.Prashant Vasisht, Vice President and Co-Head, Corporate Ratings, Icra Limited, said "the tinkering of the export duties is being done on the basis of the movement of the cracks spreads on these products, which have been elevated but volatile due to the geopolitical situation, lockdown news, inventory levels, demand fluctuations etc".Additionally, the windfall tax on crude production has also been increased, though marginally considering the international crude oil price trends."Though certainly tinkering these rates frequently creates its own uncertainty, however, considering the high level of prices (crude prices consistently above USD 100 per barrel, crack spreads of diesel above USD 30 a barrel etc), a number of countries have imposed windfall taxes and accordingly as a measure per se, India is not the only country to implement this," he said.—PTI

San Francisco: With an aim to make it more user-friendly, tech giant Microsoft has announced that its Teams meeting attendees can now have an interpreter in their preferred language.
The feature has been in testing for quite some time but is now generally available.
Meeting participants can set their preferred language and then listen to a meeting in that language, reports WindowsCentral.
The feature allows meeting organisers to have professional interpreters translate meetings in real-time. Attendees can set their preferred language when they join a meeting and should hear the interpreter's translation at a louder volume than the speaker.
Microsoft outlined the key features of language interpretation, which include listening to a meeting in the language they are most comfortable using, collaborating in meetings where multiple languages are spoken, etc.
As per the report, language interpretation joined a growing list of Teams features to overcome language barriers. For example, Teams also supports translating typed messages.
"Here at Microsoft, we serve a diverse set of global customers, including governmental institutions that hold parliament meetings in multiple languages, multinational and multilingual corporations, businesses that work with vendors around the world, and many more," Microsoft's Shalendra Chhabra, was quoted as saying. "This feature was built to support customers and users who need to communicate in the virtual world across languages," Chhabra added.
A Microsoft support document breaks down how to organise a meeting with language interpretation, how to add interpreters, how to choose a language, and how to designate someone as an interpreter.
Meeting organisers have to provide their own interpreters. Up to 16 interpreter pairs can be added to any given meeting. The feature works in scheduled meetings, channel meetings, meetings with up to 1,000 people, and webinars. —IANS

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Friday that it has carried out searches at the premises of Lakhwinder Singh Stone Crushers, and people related with it in Una (Himachal Pradesh), Mohali (Punjab) and Panchkula (Haryana) in connection with illegal mining in Una district. The ED initiated a money laundering investigation on the basis of an FIR registered in Una in 2021 by the Himachal police against illegal mining at Swan River in the district. During probe, the ED learnt that rampant illegal mining was being carried out in Una district. The modus operandi adopted by the miscreants included excavation of sand and gravel beyond leased mining area, and overshooting prescribed depth of mining. "The excess sand, gravel and stone were being transported without payment of requisite taxes to the state government. Further, massive environment damage was also being caused due to non-adherence of environmental norms," said an ED official. A joint survey of these mines is being carried out to ascertain the extent of damage caused and the quantum of illegal mining. During the searches, the ED seized various incriminating documents, digital devices, property documents and unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 15.37 lakh. Analysis of certain documents recovered from the searched locations revealed parallel sets of documents being maintained having details of actual mining for a short period of time. "Preliminary analysis of the documents shows that illegal mining worth about Rs 35 crore were carried out by the persons involved," the official said.

New Delhi (The Hawk): The windfall tax on crude oil has been lowered by the Center from $11,000 per tonne to $9,500 per tonne. According to a government notification, this adjustment will take effect on November 2.
The special supplementary excise duty on the export of aviation turbine fuel has also been increased by the Center from 3.5 to 5 rupees per litre. The government statement also noted an increase in the special supplementary excise duty on diesel exports from 12 to 13 cents per litre.
You may remember that the purpose of the windfall tax, which is imposed as a special supplementary excise duty, is to absorb the enormous profits made by domestic crude oil companies. This windfall tax is updated every two weeks.
At a time when the price of crude oil in the world has generally stayed stable at roughly $95 per barrel, the Center has pushed for a reduction in the windfall tax on the sale of locally produced crude oil.

Government decreases domestic crude oil windfall tax, raises jet fuel tax

New Delhi (The Hawk): Despite the current global headwinds, top officials assured a parliamentary subcommittee on finance on Monday that India would be able to reach its goal of becoming a $5 trillion dollar economy by 2025–2026.
The officials added that the Indian economy is doing well and, at its current growth rate of 6.4%, it will be able to reach $5 trillion in GDP by 2025–2026 even though the geopolitical environment is highly unstable as a result of the Russia–Ukraine war, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
Senior government officials had been invited by the parliamentary standing committee on finance to give their opinions on the five trillion dollar economy's overall outlook and road map.
According to sources, the committee heard presentations from Ajay Seth, the secretary of economic affairs, Parameswaran Iyer, the CEO of Niti Aayog, and V. Ananth Nageswaran, the chief economic adviser, in which they provided projections for economic growth and a roadmap for reaching a $5 trillion economy.
T.V. Somanathan, the finance secretary, was also invited by the panel but was unable to attend the meeting.
According to sources, when committee members questioned the officials regarding employment figures, they were told that the employment situation in metropolitan centres was satisfactory.
According to sources, the Parliamentary panel, which was presided over by Jayant Sinha, a member of the BJP's Lok Sabha, also questioned the officials on the country's private investments, capex, and rising edible oil costs.
In sharp contrast to the bleak picture given last week before the same panel by representatives of three major public sector banks, top officials projected optimism on sustainable economic growth amid global uncertainty.
According to State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), and Union Bank of India (UBI) representatives speaking to the Parliamentary standing committee on finance last week, the goal of making India a $5 trillion dollar economy by 2024–2025 appears challenging and may only be achievable by 2030 at the current GDP growth rate.
According to reports, bank officials told the panel that India's goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024–2025 would not be achievable at the country's current GDP growth rate of about 6.4%; at this rate, the goal might only be reached by 2030.
By 2024–2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to grow India's economy to $5 trillion.

Despite the current global headwinds, top officials assured a parliamentary subcommittee on finance on Monday that India would be able to reach its goal of becoming a $5 trillion dollar economy by 2025–2026.

Kolkata (The Hawk): As part of the ongoing investigation into the multi-million dollar teachers' recruitment irregularities scam in the state, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will question Manik Bhattacharya's spouse and son, a Trinamool Congress MLA and former president of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE).
Souvik Bhattacharya has already been asked to appear at the investigation agency's office in Kolkata the following week, according to ED sources. His spouse will receive a similar summons bringing her in for an interview the following week.
The central agency, however, has two distinct reasons for wanting to question both the son and the spouse. Souvik Bhattacharya will be questioned in relation to a contract his company entered into for Rs 2.64 crore with the All India Teachers' Training Achievers Association, the state's umbrella group for several private teacher-training institutions.
On the other side, Satarupa Bhattacharya, Bhattacharya's wife, will be questioned in relation to a bank account with deposits of Rs 2.97 that she shared with Mrityunjoy Chakraborty, who has since passed away.
In October, the ED informed a special court that the identification documents for the aforementioned deceased person continued to be utilised as KYC documents even after his passing.
Mrityunjoy Chakraborty passed away on January 30, 2016, and on March 8, 2019, more than three years later, his identity documents were submitted as KYC for the continuance of the same bank account, according to ED counsel Pheroze Edulji.
The bank accounts of Manik Bhattacharya's brother and son-in-law are also being investigated by the central agency sleuths in addition to those of Souvik and Satarupa Bhattacharya, and they may also be called in for interrogation in the future.
Manik Bhattacharya is now being held by law enforcement.

Patna (The Hawk): R S Bhatti, a senior member of the Indian Police Service, was appointed by the Bihar government as the state's new Director General of Police (DGP) on Sunday.
Rajwinder Singh Bhatti, an IPS officer from the Bihar cadre and a member of the 1990 batch, was named DGP of Bihar "until further orders," according to a notification released by the state Home Department. He is currently serving as the Additional Director General (Eastern command), Border Security Force, on central delegation (BSF). S K Singhal will be replaced by Bhatti as of December 19.
He was the DG of the Bihar Military Police before being deputed to the central office. He performed a variety of jobs in Bihar. He served as joint director for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) during his first central deputation assignment.

The lowest temperature over the plains of northwest India was reported in Fatehpur, which is located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan. It was 4.7 degrees below zero. Faridkot, Punjab, shivered at  chilly minus one degrees Celsius.

Shimla: After six days in Punjab, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra on Wednesday entered Himachal Pradesh where Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and state party President Pratibha Singh, among other party leaders, welcomed the day-long leg of the march in the state.
The flag handover ceremony was held on the border village of Ghatota in the hill state. On entering the state, Rahul Gandhi said: “You had asked that yatra should pass through Himachal Pradesh. We changed the entire route. “We gave little time to Himachal Pradesh, only one day, more time should have been given.” He added the yatra has to reach Srinagar on January 30, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Pratibha Singh told the senior Congress leader that she had assured during a meeting in Delhi before the Assembly elections that “Himachal Pradesh aapki jholi mein aayega (Congress will win Himachal Pradesh elections)”. “The beginning has been made in Dev Bhoomi and similarly we will hoist the Congress flag in every state,” she added.&nbsp;

Seoul News: Scores of flights were grounded on South Korea's Jeju Island on Wednesday due to dangerous wind conditions.

The weather authorities issued alerts for high winds and wind shear, which refers to sudden changes in wind direction and speed, reports Yonhap News Agency.

As of 9 a.m., the Jeju International Airport had reported the cancellation of 31 domestic flights.

Of the 259 domestic and 14 international flights scheduled for the day, airlines cancelled 167 in advance.

In the morning, wind gusts reached a peak of 11.8 meters per second in areas surrounding the airport.

The wind is forecast to intensify to 12.8 to 23 mps in the afternoon.

"The wind was blowing as strong as 25.7 mps, equivalent to a quasi-typhoon, over the airport, causing disruptions to aircraft operations," a weather official at the airport said. IANS

Ontario News (The Hawk): A Hindu temple in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was vandalized with anti-India graffiti, Windsor police said in a statement.

The vandalism has been labelled a "hate-motivated incident" by the Windsor Police Service, and two suspects are wanted in connection with the inquiry.

The statement claims that on April 5 police officers were dispatched to the Hindu temple to investigate a report of vandalism motivated by hatred.

"On April 5, 2023, officers were dispatched to a Hindu temple in the 1700 block of Northway Avenue following a report of hate-motivated vandalism. Officers discovered anti-Hindu and anti-India graffiti sprayed in black on an exterior wall of the building," Windsor Police said in the statement.

Video footage seized by police shows two possible suspects in the area shortly after midnight at 12 am (local time). "In the video, one suspect appears to commit the vandalism on the wall of the building while the other keeps watch," Police said in the statement.

The police confirmed "At the time of the incident, one suspect wore a black sweater, black pants with a small white logo on the left leg, and black and white high-top running shoes. The second suspect wore black pants, a sweatshirt black shoes, and white socks".

Residents who lives in close proximity to the temple have been asked by the Windsor police to check the footage from their home security systems between the hours of 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. (local time) in the hopes of finding evidence of the suspects. The cops have requested the people to call and inform Mortality Unit if they have any information regarding the incident.&nbsp;

The Ram Mandir in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, was also vandalized with anti-India graffiti in the month of February this year. The Consulate General of India in Toronto strongly criticized the vandalism of the Mandir and asked Canadian authorities to launch an investigation and take prompt action against the culprits.

"We strongly condemn the defacing of Ram Mandir in Mississauga with anti-India graffiti. We have requested Canadian authorities to investigate the incident and take prompt action on perpetrators," tweeted the Consulate General of India in Toronto.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto critisized the past incident on twiter, happened in January in Brampton where a Hindu Temple "Gauri Shankar Mandir" was defaced with anti-India graffiti triggering outrage among the Indian community.&nbsp;

The consulate officer in a statement said, "We strongly condemn the defacing of Gauri Shankar Mandir in Brampton, a symbol of Indian heritage, with anti-India graffiti. The hateful act of vandalism has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. We have raised our concerns on the matter with Canadian authorities." - Chirag Kaul

Noida: Leading wind energy solutions provider Inox Wind has bagged an order for a 150 MW wind power project from NTPC Renewable Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy, which is the renewable energy business vertical of NTPC.
The project shall be executed in the state of Gujarat.
With this, the total orders from NTPC stand at 550 megawatt (MW) awarded till date to Inox Wind, according to a company statement shared with stock exchanges on Tuesday.
Kailash Tarachandani, Chief Executive Officer of Inox Wind, expressed his gratitude towards NTPC REL for awarding this 150 MW project to Inox Wind. San Francisco: Microsoft has said that it will require SMB (Server Message Block) signing (aka security signatures) by default for all connections to defend against NTLM relay attacks in Windows 11, starting with the latest Windows build (Enterprise edition) rolling out to Insiders in the Canary Channel. Such attacks require network devices (including domain controllers) to impersonate malicious servers under the attackers' control and elevate privileges so they can gain complete control over the Windows domain. "This changes legacy behaviour, where Windows 10 and 11 required SMB signing by default only when connecting to shares named SYSVOL and NETLOGON and where Active Directory domain controllers required SMB signing when any client connected to them," Microsoft said in a blogpost. SMB signing aids in the detection of malicious authentication requests by confirming the identities of the sender and receiver via signatures and hashes embedded at the end of each message. Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced that it will no longer support its virtual assistant Cortana in Windows as a standalone app, starting in late 2023. This change will only affect Cortana in Windows and will continue to be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms, the tech giant stated on a support page. —IANS
