Two other boys were saved by the locals and rushed to the Kamalganj Community Health Centre for treatment. After the family members of the deceased refused to get the post mortem examination done, the bodies were handed over to them, police said.—PTI

Budaun:&nbsp;Two teenagers were killed after the motorcycle on which they were travelling was hit by a tractor-trolley here on Monday afternoon, police said.The incident took place near Allipur village under Kotwali Ujhani police station area, they said. Vivek Maurya (17) and Akash (19) were going to the Bhagirathi Kachla Ghat to bathe in the Ganga river when their motorcycle was hit by the tractor-trolley, the police said. Both of them died on the spot, while the driver of the tractor-trolley fled the spot leaving behind his vehicle. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination, they said.—PTI

Washington: According to a study, children and teenagers with scoliosis who undergo spinal fusion can still be given an acceptable amount of pain medication while using fewer opioids.The findings of the Michigan Medicine study were published in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.For the study, researchers enrolled 72 adolescent patients having spinal fusions at the University of Michigan Health and prescribed them 30 doses of oxycodone, as well as standard nonopioid medications, after the procedure. Forty-nine patients, along with their caregivers, received preoperative education on the risks of opioids and the importance of nonopioid pain management options, while the other 35 patients did not receive any preoperative education.The study reveal that, despite being discharged with the same amount of opioid and nonopioid medications, 23% of patients in the group who did not receive preoperative education called for an opioid prescription refill compared to 6% of patients who had received preoperative education. When compared to a group of 77 adolescents who previously underwent spinal fusion where there were no standard discharge prescription guidelines, patients in the current study consumed less oxycodone and had fewer days of oxycodone use."Spinal fusion is arguably one of the most painful procedures we perform in pediatric orthopaedics, but our findings show we can provide excellent pain control by employing multimodal pain management techniques and preoperative education," said G. Ying Li, M.D., senior author of the study and orthopaedic surgeon at U-M Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. The previous group of patients consumed a mean of 29 doses of oxycodone when receiving a larger prescription quantity. Based on this data, patients in the current study were prescribed 30 doses of oxycodone, yet they only consumed 16 doses while reporting very low pain scores."Our results show that when we prescribe patients less narcotics, they will take fewer narcotics, so prescription quantity is incredibly important after a procedure like this," Li said. "We want to avoid situations where someone is overprescribed opioids and takes too many or leftover opioids are diverted to others. In the current state of the opioid crisis, preoperative education and use of a multimodal approach to managing pain is key to reducing harm and preventing substance use disorders and overdose."&nbsp;—ANI

Washington: Teenagers become more exploratory in their behaviours with age, becoming increasingly likely to visit new places over time, finds a new study. Its results also show that greater exploration is associated with enhanced psychological well-being and larger social networks.
Notably, the researchers also discovered that adolescents who explored their natural environments more also reported a greater number of risky behaviors.
"While adolescent risk taking is typically seen as a problematic behavior, we found that heightened exploration was also linked to greater social connectivity and emotional well-being," says Catherine Hartley, an associate professor in New York University's Department of Psychology and the senior author of the study, which appears in the journal Psychological Science. "This suggests that risk taking may have an adaptive function during adolescence."
Previously, Hartley and the University of Miami's Aaron Heller reported that new and diverse experiences are linked to enhanced happiness and that this relationship is associated with greater correlation of brain activity. Those findings, which appeared in the journal Nature Neuroscience, showed a connection between our daily physical environments and our sense of well-being.
In the new Psychological Science work, Hartley, Heller, and UCLA doctoral student Natalie Saragosa-Harris sought to better understand teens' and young adults' exploration of their environments, how it relates to behaviors we tend to see as "risky," and what the psychological significance of these behaviors might be.
Earlier studies have suggested that, compared to children and older adults, adolescents and young adults tend to engage in more exploratory and novelty-seeking behaviors -- whether it's trying out new hobbies, sampling new friend groups, or visiting new places.
However, most studies of adolescent exploratory behaviors have relied on self-report or behavior in controlled laboratory environments, leaving open the question as to whether heightened adolescent exploration is evident in the real world -- when participants are in natural daily settings.
To better capture these phenomena, the scientists measured the everyday lives of 58 teenagers and adults (ages 13 to 27) in New York City, using GPS tracking to measure how often participants visited novel locations over the course of three months. From these measurements, they were able to capture daily exploration based on movement. Based on these GPS data and self-report, the researchers found several notable patterns:
There was an association between daily exploration and age, with individuals near the transition to legal adulthood (18- to 21-year-olds) exhibiting the highest exploration levels.
Regardless of age, people reported better moods on days when they explored more, supporting the notion that exploration is linked to psychological well-being.
People who had higher average levels of exploration also reported larger social networks -- measured by the number of unique individuals the subjects interacted with via phone calls and direct-messaging platforms.
Adolescents who explored their natural environments more also reported a greater number of risky behaviors (e.g., gambling, heavy drinking, illicit drug use, etc.) -- an association not evident in adults.
"These findings point to an important role for exploration in sustaining adolescent well-being and establishing social connectivity," observes Hartley. "And while risky behaviors undoubtedly pose challenges, a healthy amount of exploration is important, particularly as individuals become adults, gain independence, and form their identities." —ANI

New York: It was a shocker for residents of Manlius, an upstate New York village, to have woken up to the news of three teenagers stealing Faye, a white long-necked bird who had been a fixture at a fenced-in pond owned by the village, reported The New York Times on Friday. The boys had killed her and then eaten her. Sergeant Ken Hatter of the Manlius Police Department said, "They prepared a feast. They did not have any idea the significance of the swans had on this community or that the swans are owned by the village." He added, "They believed it was just a very large duck. They did not know it was a swan, and they did not know it was not a wild animal." According to the officials, the teenage boys jumped over a fence surrounding Goose Lake Park on Saturday midnight. Faye was nesting by Manlius Swan Pond at the time. Two of them held down the swan to capture her, and then the three killed her, said Sergeant Hatter. The boys also stole four alive cygnets, or baby swans, leaving Manny, Faye's longtime mate, behind, according to NYT. The three then brought the birds to the residence of a relative of one of the teens, where the swan, according to the police, was prepared and enjoyed with family and friends. Captain Tina Stanton of the Manlius Police Department said after the swans were reported missing on Monday, suggestions from neighbourhood residents helped them find the four cygnets, who are still alive, and then the three accused teens. 18-year-old Eman Hussen is a resident of Syracuse, New York, and two other juveniles, whose identities were withheld due to their age, were charged with felony charges of grand larceny and criminal mischief. They were also accused on misdemeanour counts of criminal trespassing and stealing conspiracy. The younger teenagers, who are 16 and 17, were to be arraigned on Thursday, as per NYT. However, it is unclear if the teenagers have access to lawyers. Hussen did not respond to reporters when he was arrested on Thursday and was seen smiling ashe was being led to a police vehicle in handcuffs. Manlius, a community of around 4,000 people southeast of Syracuse, New York, where swans had lived since 1905, was shaken by the news of Faye's murder. The swans are greatly loved by the locals, who frequently stop by to visit Faye, who was donated to the town in 2010 when she was 16 years old, according to Sergeant Hatter. She and her partner Manny had been residing by the pond for almost ten years. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, mute swans like Faye were imported to the United States from Europe in the late 1800s. The government estimates there are roughly 2,000 mute swans in New York. Sergeant Hatter also said Manlius is one of the few entities in New York State that has a permit allowing it to keep, breed, care for, and own mute swans. Why the teens chose to devour Faye was a mystery. The reason wasn't a lack of food, according to Sergeant Hatter. "They were out hunting," The New York Times reported. —ANI

New York Teenagers Kill, Eat A Swan, Police Say

Hydeia Broadbent, who was born with HIV and as a child became a leading voice in raising awareness about the virus and AIDS, died Tuesday at her home in Las Vegas. She was 39.
Her father, Loren Broadbent, confirmed the death. No cause was given.  Broadbent was 6 years old when she began sharing her struggle with HIV on television programs, aiming to educate the public amid an epidemic that produced panic and stigma around AIDS, according to her website.  In 1992, when she was 7, Broadbent was interviewed opposite Magic Johnson, the basketball star who after his own HIV diagnosis became a familiar face in the fight against HIV and AIDS.  “I want people to know that we’re just normal people,” Broadbent, her face crumpling as she fought through tears, told Johnson. “We are normal people,” he gently reassured her. Johnson posted a clip of the conversation online in a tribute Wednesday.
“I think it just opened a lot of people’s eyes that HIV can happen to anybody, with me being so young,” Broadbent told The New York Times in 2006 about the interview with Johnson.  By the time Broadbent was 12, she had shared her story with numerous national television audiences, according to the biography page on her website. At 11, she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and talked about the myriad health issues she had overcome as a toddler.  Hydeia Loren Broadbent was born June 14, 1984, at a hospital in Las Vegas. She was abandoned at birth and adopted by Loren and Patricia Broadbent, according to the biography on her website.  Although she had been born with HIV, it was not diagnosed until she was 3 years old.  The illness affected Broadbent’s learning, keeping her from attending school until the seventh grade. At Odyssey High School in Las Vegas, she was part of a program that allowed her to work from home on a computer.  “My daughter didn’t have a formal education because of her illness,” her mother, Patricia, told the Times in 2001 for an article about teenagers living with AIDS. “My priority was not school, but keeping her healthy for the time she had.”
Broadbent continued to speak publicly about HIV and AIDS into adulthood. Her work earned her recognition, particularly among African Americans. She was twice named among the “Most Influential 150 African Americans,” in 2008 and 2011, by Ebony magazine, according to her biography.  As an adult, Broadbent focused on combating the stigma and misinformation around AIDS and educated the public about prevention.  “I have dedicated my whole life to this fight,” she told CNN in 2012. “I don’t hate my life. I feel like I’m really blessed. But at the same time, my life doesn’t have to be their life. I didn’t have a choice when it came to HIV/AIDS, and people do have a choice.”
