Chennai: With deaths due to snake bites touching an average of 58,000 in the country with 70 per cent of it in the North Indian states, the Tamil Nadu government is to allow the Irulas Snake Catchers Industrial Cooperative Society to catch 5,000 snakes annually. The society is the only authorised supplier of snake venom in the country.For the past couple of years, the Tamil Nadu forest department was not allowing the Irulas, whose major revenue is from catching of snakes, to catch snakes till March leading to a heavy shortage of snakes and thereby snake venom.The Tamil Nadu forest department issues an order in August every year to catch snakes and in 2020-21 and 2021-22, the order was released only in March middle. This led to the bottlenecks in sanctioning money after the end of the financial year as the bills are to be vetted by the state finance ministry.R.R. Muthuswamy of the Irula's Snake Catchers Industrial Cooperative Society while speaking to IANS said, "We get annual permission to catch snakes by August every year and this will end by March of that financial year leading to several bottlenecks in getting the bills cleared due to hindrance in the concerned departments."He, however, said that the society has got information about the government issuing the orders in the month of April itself so that the Irula's can be engaged in snake catching through the year.The society pays an Irula Rs 2,300 for catching Spectacled Cobra, Rs 850 for common krait, Rs 2,300 for Russels Viper and Rs 300 for saw scaled viper. Sources in the Tamil Nadu forest department informed IANS that the department is contemplating to increase the license of the society to catch more snakes than the present 5,000 as demand for snake venom is on a high.The Madras High court had in a 1994 order allowed the Irula community to catch snakes for extracting venom, but the Tamil Nadu forest department has not allowed them to catch more than 5.000 snakes a year.A senior official with the Tamil Nadu forest department while speaking to IANS said, "If the Irulas are not permitted to catch more snakes, there will be a huge gap between the demand for snake venom and the supply. The anti-venom manufacturing companies will then be forced to depend on other spurious suppliers which is illegal. The best way is to increase the permission from the annual 5,000 snakes to 10,000 snakes that would help overcome the shortage of venom and can even be sold to foreign countries, including Asia and Africa where there is a shortage of venom."The Irula community is a Scheduled Tribe community, who are nomads but based out of Villupuram, Virudachalam and Krishnagiri districts of Tamil Nadu with the main vocation being snake catching. They work in brick kilns for a living and the misery of the community and their poverty was depicted in the recent blockbuster Tamil movie, 'Jai Bhim'.&nbsp;&nbsp;—IANS

At the heart of the crisis are low inventories of coal -- the fossil fuel that produces 70 per cent of India's electricity. While the government insists that there is enough coal available to meet the demand, the reduced availability of railway rakes to transport coal has led to coal inventories being at the lowest pre-summer levels in at least nine years. Also, with international energy prices shooting up following the war in Ukraine, coal imports have dipped.Besides measures to increase coal supplies to power plants, the Union government has asked states to step up coal imports for the next three years to build up inventories.Thermal plants across the country are grappling with coal shortages, indicating a looming power crisis in the country, All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) said.Peak power demand met or the highest supply in a day was 200.65 GW on April 27 while peak power shortage was 10.29 GW. Bareilly (UP) : According to reports, the school management had confined the children in a room on Saturday because of non-payment of fees. When the parents came to pick up the children after school hours, they came to know about the children being locked in a room. The parents created a ruckus over this. They called the police asking for help when the authorities did not let the children go. After the police intervention, the children were taken out from the principal's office. The children were very nervous and some of them were crying. The management did not respond to calls regarding the incident. Parents' Association President Ankur Saxena said that he had been apprised of the incident and would discuss the issue at a meeting on Sunday after which they would lodge a formal complaint. Odisha: The ongoing Puri heritage corridor construction work might have caused damage to the 800-year-old Jagannath temple there and the state government project was being carried out without valid permission from the competent authorities, the Archaeological Survey of India on Monday informed the Orissa high court.Hearing a PIL claiming that construction work for the project has affected the health of the temple, the court had asked the ASI, the custodian of the 12th-century shrine, to undertake a joint inspection of the site with the state government and file a report to the court.Asking the state government to file its reply on the ASI's affidavit, a division bench headed by Chief Justice S Muralidhar posted the matter to be heard again on May 22.”There is every possibility that the construction agency OBCC (Odisha Bridge Construction Company) during the excavation and removal of the earth might have destroyed the archaeological remains of the heritage site,” the ASI affidavit said.The ongoing construction work of the project being carried out by the Odisha government inside the ”prohibited" area of the ancient monument has no valid permission or no objection certificate from the competent authorities, it said.The state had informed the court that correspondences were exchanged between the Odisha government and the National Monuments Authority, which functions under the Union ministry of culture and is responsible for grant of permission for construction-related activity in the ”prohibited and regulated” areas.However, in its 70-page affidavit to the high court, the ASI said that the drawings and structural designs included in the revised detailed project report (DPR) are different from the ones presented to the NMA.The ASI has observed that the construction work of the project is in progress within the prohibited and regulated areas of the monument.As directed by the high court, the ASI along with officials of OBCC, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration and the Puri district collector made a joint inspection of the site last week.The affidavit claimed that during the joint inspection, the OBCC managing director said that till date no permission or approval from the NMA or any competent authorities was available for structural activities and the design of the project.”The MD has further informed (the ASI) that there are deviations in plan and elevation as well as in the project design. In the revised proposal, the height of various structural units had been increased and more units have been added.”No heritage impact assessment studies have been conducted before commencement of the project. At several locations stratified deposits of about 15 to 20 ft have taken place, which has caused irreparable damage to the heritage site,” the ASI said in its affidavit.The petitioner has prayed that the court give an order to stop the construction activities undertaken by the state administration for a developmental project near the temple allegedly violating the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.According to the provisions of the Act, the area within 100 metres from a monument is a ”prohibited” zone while that within 200 metres falls under the ”regulated” category, the petition said.The state government has not taken permission from the ASI for the construction work, the petitioner submitted.”Cracks have appeared in the Nata Mandap of the 12th-century shrine due to these construction activities” and continued construction work will pose a threat to the structure of the temple, it said.Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with Puri's titular king Gajapati Dibya Singha Deb had last year laid the foundation stone for the project which seeks to provide better amenities to pilgrims, including toilets and cloakrooms—PTI

Malappuram: A video, which purportedly showed a Muslim scholar reprimanding the organisers of an event in Malappuram district, for inviting a girl on stage has gone viral, sparking protests on the social media.In the video clip aired by news channels, MT Abdulla Musaliyar, a senior functionary of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama, a body of Muslim scholars, is seen chiding one of the organisers for calling a class 10 girl student on the dais to receive an award.The incident occurred during the inauguration of a 'madrassa' building in the district, where students were felicitated recently.The memento was handed over to the girl by Indian Union Muslim League leader Panakkad Sayed Abbas Ali Shihab Thangal.Soon after the award was handed over, Musaliyar questioned the organisers as to why the girl was invited on stage."Who invited a Class 10 girl to the stage… If you do this again… Don't call such girls here… Don't you know the rules of Samastha? Were you the one who called her?… Ask her parents to come to the stage to collect the award. Don't do such things while we are sitting here. This will appear in photos and be telecast," a visibly angry Musaliyar was seen telling the organisers, while Thangal was standing next to him.The person who announced the name of the girl was seen apologising to Musaliyar.Reacting to the incident, Fathima Thahiliya, former national vice president of the Muslim Students Federation took to Facebook and said removing girls from stages and insulting them will have far-reaching consequences in the society."The leadership should ensure that the girls with talents are held close to the religion and are encouraged. We should be able to use their abilities for the betterment of society and religion. Keeping them away from the stage and insulting them would result in far-reaching consequences in the society. Those who endure such insults may later hate the religion and its leaders," Thahiliya said.Meanwhile, PK Navas, the state President of MSF came out in support of Musaliyar and blamed certain communal elements for the attack on him."The (online) lynching of honourable MT Usthad is not an innocent one. Such contents in the guise of Islamophobic manner are being spread by certain communal elements. Mumbai: Many pockets of Mumbai plunged into darkness on Monday evening in a power outage caused by what was termed as a "technical fault".The outage comes amid a series of disruptions in power supply faced by the financial capital over the last month amid a severe shortage of electricity that has forced the state discom MSEDCL to initiate load-shedding in several parts of Maharashtra.Suburbs like Bandra, Santacruz and Chembur, and pockets in central Mumbai such as Dadar reported the outage for over 15 minutes starting at 2130 hrs.Adani Electricity Mumbai said 1.8 lakh consumers serviced by it were impacted because rival Tata Power's equipment failed at the Dharavi receiving station.Tata Power sought to shift the blame on the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company, claiming power tripping lasted for around 7 minutes.“There was an incident of power tripping today for a very short time (around 7 minutes) due to tripping of 220kV MSETCL OLTS protection at their Trombay Receiving Station, giving shutdown to 160MW load at Tata Power's Dharavi Receiving Station,” an official spokesperson said.About ten days ago, the state-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking, which had witnessed several outages in areas serviced by it, had said the ongoing heatwave is leading to extra demand from consumers which is resulting in disruptions as supply is not being able to keep pace with demand.Due to large increase in the temperature, people are using ACs and fans more, resulting in heavy demand and consumption of electricity suddenly. This may affect network and generates cable or feeder faults across island city,” a spokesperson for the civic body-run undertaking had said.The city has suffered outages in February this year and multiple times over the last month ever since the state government admitted to a shortfall of about 3,000 MW.—PTI

Mumbai: Chennai Super Kings suffered due to a dubious on-field umpiring call after a short-circuit at the Wankhede Stadium led to unavailability of Decision Review System (DRS) for 10 balls during their IPL match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday.With DRS system not functional, CSK opener Devon Conway couldn't get his leg before decision overturned as the delivery from Daniel Sams would have missed the leg-stump by a distance.In fact, neither Mumbai CA, which is the local association nor BCCI, the organisers of the tournament, offered any official explanation of power outage and short circuit on record but off-record put the blame on each other. A BCCI source said that "short-circuit" happened in one of the power supply outlets which was directly linked to the DRS system and hence it could not be set up initially."The DRS system had to be reset after normalcy was restored and it became available after the first 10 balls," the source informed.Conway was the only dismissal that would have surely been reversed as Robin Uthappa was plumb in-front even though the system wasn't working back then.According to a MCA official, there was also a technical glitch caused the delay in the toss when one of the flood-light towers went off. "As far as the flood light issue is concerned, we rectified the problem immediately," the MCA official said, adding that there was no issue from the BEST (local department), which supplies electricity to the stadium.Just after Uthappa's dismissal, the DRS was restored and the players were apparently told by the umpires about it.—PTI

Puri: &nbsp;A fresh case has been filed in connection with the controversial Heritage Corridor project at the 800-year-old Jagannath Temple here, which is being carried out by the Odisha government allegedly without permission from the competent authorities.A court in Odisha's Puri district on Friday issued notices to the Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and eight other parties seeking their stand on the alleged illegality in the construction work of the project which "might have caused damage to the temple".Civil Judge (Senior Division) PK Routray issued the notices on a writ petition filed by the Puri Lawyers' Association seeking an injunction to the construction work within the prohibited zone of the 12th-century shrine.The court also issued notices to National Monument Authority (NMA), Puri Municipality, Puri district collector, the Temple Management Committee, Odisha Bridge &amp; Construction Corporation, which is executing the project, and others.It directed the respondents to file their replies and fixed the next date of hearing on June 26.This is the third court case on the controversial heritage corridor project.A few days ago, the sub-divisional judicial magistrate's (SDJM) court directed the police to register a case against the district collector and others. After the shilanyaas ceremony, which was performed by monks belonging to three major Buddhist traditions, Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana, the two Prime Ministers also unveiled a model of the Centre.4. "There is no point in talking about how hard life is," said A.P.D. Sumanavathi, a 60-year-old woman selling fruit and vegetables in the Pettah market in Colombo, the commercial capital, on Friday. "I can't predict how things will be in two months, at this rate we might not even be here. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the central bank chief, has said plans for a debt restructuring were almost finalised and he would be submitting a proposal to the cabinet soon. "We are in pre-emptive default," he said. "Our position is very clear, until there is a debt restructure, we cannot repay." India's diverse culinary heritage in London with Pali Hill

New Delhi: India is expected to face a wider coal shortage during the quarter ending September over expectations of higher power demand, an internal power ministry presentation seen by Reuters showed, worsening risks of widespread power outages. The country expects local coal supply to fall 42.5 million tonnes short of demand in the September quarter, 15 per cent higher than previously projected, due to higher growth in power demand and lower output from some mines.The grim forecast shows the extent of the fuel shortage in India, at a time when annual power demand is seen growing at the fastest rate in at least 38 years and global coal prices are trading at near-record levels due to a supply crunch resulting from the Russia-Ukraine crisis. India has stepped up pressure on utilities to increase imports in recent days, warning of cuts to supply of domestically mined coal if power plants do not build up coal inventories through imports. However, one of the slides in the presentation showed that most states had yet to award contracts to import coal and that Indian utilities would run out of coal by July if no coal was imported. Only one state had awarded a contract to import coal as of end-April, a power ministry import status report reviewed by Reuters showed. India expects domestic coal supply of 154.7 million tonnes, 42.5 million tonnes short of the projected requirement of 197.3 million tonnes in the September quarter, the presentation showed. It previously expected a shortage of 37 million tonnes. The presentation was made on Friday in a virtual meeting in which the Union Coal and Power Ministers were present, with top energy officials from the centre and the states in attendance, according to two government officials familiar with the matter.The Coal and Power Ministries did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. Details on the presentation have not been previously reported. Coal inventories at power plants have declined by about 13 per cent since April, which translates to eight days of coal requirement, the lowest level at this time of the year in at least nine years. The higher coal demand could also stifle efforts to build power plant inventories. India now expects the demand for coal from utilities to be 784.6 million tonnes for the year ending March 2023, the presentation showed, 3.3 per cent higher than projected earlier. The projected annual coal shortage is now 49.3 million tonnes, nearly three times the 17.7 million tonnes projected earlier, the presentation showed. India reconciled its coal demand projections after higher-than-expected power demand growth in April, when electricity use hit a record high due to soaring temperatures. Many states on Friday called for the government-run Coal India to import coal in bulk and distribute it among the states, the officials said. States cited high global prices and supply challenges to seek aggregated imports, the officials said, adding that the Coal Minister had told states the demand would be considered. Higher imports could put further pressure on state-government-owned power distribution companies, which are already saddled with debt and owe billions of rupees to generators as they have historically absorbed higher input costs to keep tariffs steady. Coal India did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. The world's largest miner has not imported coal in the recent years.—IANS

New Delhi: The Centre has projected that the overall coal demand will outstrip the domestic supply in the current financial year. The development assumes significance in the wake of certain parts of the country grappling with power outages in the wake of a shortage of coal. While the overall coal demand in FY2022-23 is expected to be 1,029 million tonnes (MT), the domestic supply of fossil fuel is estimated to be 974 MT, according to the latest medium-term projections of dry fuel by the coal ministry. Of the overall demand in the current fiscal, the power sector accounts for the major chunk of 735 MT and the remaining 294 MT by the non-power sector.However, the estimated domestic supply of coal at 1,304 MT is expected to exceed the overall coal demand of1,134 MT in the next financial year. In FY'28 the overall demand for dry fuel is likely to be 1,313 MT and the domestic supply is projected at 1,456 MT. In the 2029-30 financial year, the domestic supply of dry fuel at 1,511 MT is again expected to surpass the demand at 1,448 MT.''In order to meet the peak energy demand,it has been imperative to track the performance of the several sectors contributing in the energy sector....(therefore) after detailed discussion with Coal India Ltd and coal consuming sectors, Ministry of Coal has estimated the projection of coal demand up to 2029-30,'' the ministry said.Last month, the coal ministry said that the current power crisis is mainly due to the sharp decline in electricity generation from different fuel sources and not due to the non-availability of domestic coal. Coal Secretary A K Jain had attributed the low coal stocks at power plants to several factors such as heightened power demand due to the boom in the economy post-COVID-19, the early arrival of summer, a rise in the price of gas and imported coal, and a sharp fall in electricity generation by coastal thermal power plants.He was of the view that a slew of measures is already underway to enhance the total power supply in the country.
