Delhi: In an unprecedented move, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday removed Director General of Police Mukul Goel from his post for inefficiency and neglecting his work, an official statement said.Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar has been given the additional charge of the state's police chief, Additional Chief Secretary (Information) Navneet Sehgal.Goel has been made the Director General of the Civil Defence department, the statement said.It added that Goel was removed from the post of DGP for neglecting official work, not taking interest in departmental work and inefficiency.Goel, a 1987-batch IPS officer, was appointed the Uttar Pradesh police chief in June last year.Before that, he had served as an additional director general of the Border Security Force.Born in Muzaffarnagar, Goel has a B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.—PTI

Delhi: In the swiftest action against erring personnel, the Central Bureau of Investigation has dismissed its four officers under a stringent constitutional provision and arrested them after they were allegedly found involved in staging a raid on a company in Chandigarh to extort money, officials said Thursday.The CBI received a complaint from a Chandigarh-based businessman on May 10 that six people, including four from the CBI, had entered his office and threatened him with arrest on the charges of supporting and providing money to terrorists. They also claimed to have information regarding it."It was further alleged that the accused forcefully took the complainant in a car and demanded Rs 25 lakh from him," CBI spokesperson R C Joshi said.As part of the bureau’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal swung into action, looked into the matter and found prima facie involvement of his men in the embarrassing episode.He immediately issued directions to dismiss the accused officers from service invoking Article 311 of the Constitution, they said.Under Article 311, presidential pleasure stands withdrawn and a government official is dismissed from service.The accused -- Sumit Gupta, Pradeep Rana, Ankur Kumar and Akash Ahlawat (all sub-inspectors at the CBI's Delhi-based units) -- were taken into custody by the agency on Wednesday night and Thursday after registering a case against them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 388 (extortion by threat of accusation of an offence), under which the minimum sentence is 10-year imprisonment and the maximum is life imprisonment.The dismissed officers were working in anti-corruption units, economic offence wing and Interpol protocol division of the CBI."We have never heard of such a swift action where officials of a police force have been dismissed within a couple of days of their illegal action coming to the fore," an official said.During the staged "raid", a ruckus was created and one of the officers was rounded up, officials said, adding that the other accused were identified later.The CBI conducted a search operation at the premises of the accused officers during which incriminating documents were recovered, Joshi said."As part of its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and other offences, not only in respect of those from outside but its own officials, the CBI, on receipt of the complaint, immediately registered a case, identified its other officials allegedly involved in the matter and effected their arrests. Taking a serious note of this act on part of these delinquent officials, all four of them were dismissed from service," Joshi said.The four dismissed officers were produced before a special court by the Chandigarh branch of the CBI and were remanded in two-day custody of the agency.—PTI

Srinagar: Three government employees have been sacked by the Jammu and Kashmir administration for their alleged active support to the terrorism.Altaf Hussain Pandit, chemistry professor of Kashmir University, Mohammed Maqbool Hajam, a teacher in the school education department and Ghulam Rasool, a Jammu and Kashmir police constable terminated from government service over terror links, said J-K administration sources.The recent crackdown on a terror group and anti-national network that took place on Thursday, was part of the government's effort to detect and mitigate terror elements within the system who sneak in to the system during the previous regimes.According to the sources, Pandit was actively associated with Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and had crossed over to Pakistan for terror training. He remained an active terrorist of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front for three years before his arrest by the security forces in 1993.He also remained an active cadre of the JeI and worked as a terror recruiter. He was instrumental in organising stone-pelting, and violent protests against the killing of terrorists in 2011 and 2014.In 2015, he became an executive member of the Kashmir University Teachers Association and allegedly used the position to propagate secessionism among students. He also motivated students to join terror ranks.Maqbool Hajam was a terror overground worker (OGW) who used to radicalise people. He was part of a mob which attacked a police station in Sogam and other government buildings. Despite being a government teacher, he was always found involved in terror activities.And the third official terminated, Rasool, was working as an underground supporter of terrorists. He was also an informer who used to tip off terrorists and OGWs about anti-terror operations. He is also accused of leaking the names of police personnel involved in anti-terror operations.Rasool was in touch with Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Mushtaq Ahmad alias Aurangzeb, who has crossed over to Pakistan.Sources also said that the designated committee in J-K for scrutinising and recommending cases under Article 311 (2) (c) of the Constitution of India had recommended the termination of these three employees from government service for having terror links and working as overground workers.—ANI

Kanpur:&nbsp;Two Uttar Pradesh policemen were terminated after a departmental inquiry in the 2020 Bikru massacre case found they tipped off dreaded gangster Vikas Dubey about an impending raid against him, helping him set up an ambush and kill eight personnel, officials said Thursday. The two policemen were already suspended in connection with the case."Vinay Tiwari, the then Station Officer of Chaubepur Police Station, and Sub-Inspector KK Sharma have been dismissed from service," Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime &amp; Headquarters) Sureshrao A Kulkarni told PTI Thursday. He said the duo was found guilty of leaking information about the police raid for arresting Dubey, a history-sheeter who was killed within days of the incident. "Acting on this information, Dubey with the help of his henchmen set up an ambush for the police team. They fired at the police party that had gone to the Bikru village, killing eight police personnel including a Deputy SP," said the officer. The incident occurred during the night of July 2, 2020. After killing the policemen in the ambush, Dubey fled from the spot along with his accomplishes. A few days later, Vinay Tiwari and KK Sharma were suspended for their alleged laxity in duty. It was alleged that Tiwari and Sharma fled from the scene when their colleagues were attacked. This caused many to suspect their roles in the entire episode. During a preliminary inquiry, it was found that Tiwari and Sharma had leaked information about the impending raid against Vikas Dubey after which they were sent to jail, officials said. In the days following the ambush, several UP police teams had launched a manhunt to nab Dubey and his aides. Police had arrested many of Dubey's aides while several of his henchmen who were allegedly involved in the ambush were shot dead in police encounters. A week after the incident, Dubey was nabbed at Mahakal temple in Ujjain. He was gunned down in an encounter while being brought back to Kanpur from Ujjain.—PTI

Mumbai: Fraudulent transactions of around Rs 4 lakh took place by allegedly using the credit card of Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor. According to the complaint, Rs 3.82 lakh was transferred from Kapoor's account in five fraudulent transactions on February 9. A case has been registered at the Amboli police station in Mumbai on Wednesday under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.Kapoor came to know that money had been withdrawn from his bank account and he enquired the bank about this. Following this, he lodged a written complaint with the police. The producer told the police that neither anyone asked for his credit card details nor did he receive any phone call regarding this. Police officials suspected that someone had obtained the data while Kapoor was using the card. It has been learned that money from Kapoor's card went to the account of a company in Gurugram. The investigation is underway.—ANI

Mumbai: A special court in Mumbai on Wednesday allowed dismissed police officer Sachin Waze's plea to turn an approver in a corruption case involving former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh.In an application filed before the special CBI court, Waze claimed he had cooperated with the Central Bureau of Investigation before and after his arrest, following which his confessional statement was recorded before a magistrate under provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code. In its reply, the CBI had given its nod to Waze's plea, subject to certain conditions.Special judge D P Shingade on Wednesday allowed Waze's plea."Your application is awarded to you, but subject to certain conditions," the judge said. Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh had last March alleged that then home minister Deshmukh had set a target to certain police officers, including Waze, to collect Rs 100 crore per month from restaurants and bars in the metropolis.The court on Wednesday laid out conditions stating that the applicant (Waze) shall make full and true disclosure on the whole circumstances related to the said offence.He should disclose all facts already admitted before the magistrate during his confessional statement, the court said, adding that Waze should truthfully and correctly answer questions put by the special public prosecutor.Further, the court told Waze that there would be a certain certificate that he will have to sign.Earlier, in its response to Waze's plea, the CBI had said that during the investigation, the accused voluntarily revealed various incriminating facts relevant to the case.In his confessional statement also, Waze has disclosed the criminal involvement of accused Anil Deshmukh and his staff -- Sanjeev Palande and Kundan Shinde -- regarding the collection of bribe/illegal gratification from orchestra bars and other establishments, the CBI said.The Central agency has said that the confessional statement made by Waze has been corroborated on material aspects by oral and documentary evidence collected during the investigation.The statements are "very relevant" on certain issues, the agency said.Waze is aware of the modus operandi adopted by the other accused persons in the collection of bribes and also has first-hand knowledge about the role of the other accused persons in the commission of the offence, the agency said.The CBI had said that if Waze volunteered to make full and true disclosure of the whole&nbsp;circumstances within knowledge about his involvement and that of other accused persons in the case, this court, by imposing just and proper conditions, may pass an appropriate order for making him an approver in the interest of justice.Following the court order, the dismissed cop can now depose as a prosecution witness in the case.Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh had last March alleged that then home minister Deshmukh had set a target for certain police officers to collect Rs 100 crore per month from restaurants and bars in the metropolis.The CBI had lodged an FIR against Deshmukh, Waze and others following an order of the Bombay high court last April.The Nationalist Congress Party leader resigned from the state cabinet after the HC order.Waze was arrested in March last year by the NIA for his alleged role in parking an explosives-laden SUV near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's south Mumbai residence.He is also being investigated in connection with the murder of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran. Besides the 'Antilia' bomb scare and the corruption case, Waze is also named accused in a money laundering case being probed by the ED.He has also written a letter to the ED, saying he wants to turn an approver in the money laundering case.Waze is currently in judicial custody.—PTI

Beijing: The Hong Kong Catholic Social Communications Office, the communications department of the Diocese of Hong Kong, announced on May 24 that there will be no memorial Mass on the Tiananmen massacre's 33rd anniversary.Several members of the Diocese have expressed concern that holding the Mass in commemoration of the events of 1989 at the Tiananmen Square will be in violation of the draconian 'National Security Law'. While in mainland China people are not allowed to hold commemorations of the "June 4 incident"; until recently Hong Kong held annual vigils in memory of the victims. But since Beijing brought in the National Security Law in June 2020, it has tightened its control over Hong Kong and cracked down on dissent including a ban on public commemorations of Tiananmen in 2020, and again in 2021, 'officially' because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Hong Kong will see more state-sponsored Chinese oppression against any event to remember the Tiananmen Square event, which exposes Beijing's authoritarian and repressive style of governance.Last December, authorities in Hong Kong removed the 'pillar of shame,' an iconic memorial dedicated to the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. The memorial designed by Danish sculptor Jens Galschiot symbolised the ruthless killings committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) in June 1989 when thousands of students gathered in central Beijing demanding political reforms and democracy. The day is thought to be one of the bloodiest political crackdowns in modern history. Interestingly, a scaled-down replica of the "Pillar of Shame" statue honouring the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre will be unveiled at a commemorative vigil in Taipei, Taiwan on June 4 evening. Reportedly, Taiwan will be the only place in the Chinese-speaking world to hold such an event to mark the 33rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.Three decades down the line, memories of that massacre still haunt the CCP. PLA ruthlessly killed the Tiananmen Square protesters through a bloody crackdown after CCP imposed 'martial law' in June 1989 to forcefully end the months-long protest. Estimates of the death toll vary, but at least 10,000 civilians, mostly students, were killed by the PLA in the crackdown. It was the largest such demonstration in China's modern history. It shook the CCP to the core, forcing then-leader Deng Xiaoping to tighten the CCP's grip over the country and purge many party leaders deemed 'responsible' for the chaos.In the immediate aftermath of the massacre, the party claimed moral high ground by characterising the protesters as 'counter-revolutionaries'. Chinese state television reinforced that propaganda by showing images of violence allegedly committed by these 'counter-revolutionaries' against the PLA in various parts of the capital. The party is still concerned about the Tiananmen event's legacy; unsure whether its propaganda has worked to erase all memories related to the incident. It is also noteworthy that an authoritarian regime like China is far more insecure about its international image and fears democratic protests which may put the CCP's power in danger. Consequently, even after 33 years of the June 4 event, Beijing continues to hide the true facts from the world and its domestic population.Therefore, it is not surprising that whenever the Tiananmen Square massacre anniversary approaches, the CCP becomes edgy, detains human rights activists, and censors discussions of the crackdown. Moreover, it has also used advanced technologies to erase online mentions of events related to the massacre. For example, its search engine algorithms crawl politically sensitive search terms on the Chinese internet or redirect the user toward other subjects. In addition, video recognition software can detect images related to the square and its bloody history.6 These developments show the CCP's uneasiness.7 This contrasts sharply with images just a few months ago when the CCP showcased its centenary and held celebrations touting the success of the party in elevating China to the comity of nations.But for the CCP, the massacre holds a significance of a different kind. After all, it allowed the party to put its house in order, purge the leaders and elevate a new set of leaders. These reforms paved the way for the rise of the current General Secretary Xi Jinping, who has only set new standards of authoritarianism and repression his predecessors could only imagine. Furthermore, the massacre allowed the CCP to tighten its grip on power.Three decades later after the massacre, the situation in China has remained the same. In fact, the CCP's heavy-handedness has extended beyond its borders to intimidate, threaten, and cajole those who criticise its human rights record and its repression in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong. The CCP remains wary and insecure of any public disturbance or chaos, which could derail its project to rule China indefinitely, just as the events of June 1989 created a sense of instability in the eyes of the top Chinese leadership.&nbsp;—ANI

However, with no top Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader publicly offering any apology for Bhuiyan’s open and unambiguous call to violence, his statement signifies a tacit endorsement from the party leadership to go for an attempted violent overthrow of the Hasina government.A senior intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told IANS that Bhuiyan’s call is “both a trial balloon and an indicator of the future”.The threat by Bhuiyan bears ominous portents of possible violence in the rundown to the June 25 inauguration of the 6.15 km railroad bridge on Padma River, Bangladesh’s biggest infrastructure project so far and one constructed with the country’s own resources. For the first time, even the Catholic church has decided not to provoke the communist police. The Hong Kong Catholic Social Communications Office, the communications department of the Diocese of Hong Kong has announced that there will be no memorial Mass on the massacre's anniversary.For the last one week, the media covering Hong Kong is unanimous in thinking that they "will see more state-sponsored Chinese oppression against any event to remember the Tiananmen Square event, which exposes Beijing's authoritarian and repressive style of governance". The government has in the last two years systematically progressed towards cessation of all dissent on the anniversary date of June 4. In 2020 it brought in the draconian security law. Then it said protests are anti-national and would attract the provisions of the security law.In December 2021, it went a step ahead and removed the 'pillar of shame,' an iconic memorial dedicated to the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. The memorial designed by Danish sculptor Jens Galschiot "symbolised the ruthless killings committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) in June 1989 when thousands of students gathered in central Beijing demanding political reforms and democracy". The same month, "the Chinese University of Hong Kong tore down the Goddess of Democracy statue, a replica of the one created by protesters in Beijing during the Tiananmen protests". A museum set up in Hong Kong in memory of the Tiananmen victims was forcibly closed down.And this year, it has ordered that all dissent shall remain buried. The only opposition to the communist decree is from Taiwan where, according to media reports, "a scaled-down replica of the 'Pillar of Shame' statue honouring the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre will be unveiled at a commemorative vigil in Taipei, Taiwan on June 4 evening". In effect, nowhere in China will the massacre be allowed to be remembered on its anniversary this year. Taiwan will be the only exception as it stands up to the anti-democratic orders of the Chinese government.Over three decades since the mass killing, the day haunts the Communist Party of China. Soldiers of the PLA army ruthlessly killed the Tiananmen Square protesters through a "bloody crackdown after CCP imposed 'martial law' in June 1989 to forcefully end the months-long protest". At least "10,000 civilians, mostly students," were killed by the PLA. The incident led to internal condemnation of China and till today, the country's claims about respecting human rights is always suspect. The country was virtually isolated by the global community. It shook the communist leadership so much that the then top leader, Deng Xiaoping, used the occasion to purge several party leaders for creating the "chaos". They were the scapegoats. Deng also used the occasion to tighten the CCP's grip over the country.The CCP tried to protect the Tiananmen protests as the result of provocative actions by "counter-revolutionaries". However, everybody saw through the fake propaganda.Since then, the government has hyped the propaganda in the run-up to every anniversary of the killings. Obviously, the propaganda failed to work and that is probably why the government has in 2022 decided to ban all ceremonies. The government asked the Hong Kong police to issue warnings to residents to desist from organising any memorial functions. It also warned that "sharing social posts" describing their mood on the occasion of the anniversary could be grounds for "incitement". The police also forced the disbanding of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements, the original organiser of the Victoria Park vigil. The police started probing whether the Alliance was an "agent of foreign forces", forcing it to disintegrate.This year's "June 4" - that is what the Tiananmen Square Vigil is known in Hong Kong - will be the first occasion when Hong Kong will fall silent, without any protests or commemoration. That will be the beginning of a new chapter of CCP aggression against the island which, in 1989, played a crucial role in organising the escape for the Tiananmen activists who survived the 1989 massacre.—IANS

Mumbai: The ruling Shiv Sena on Wednesday announced the candidature of Sachin Ahir and Aamshya Padvi for the upcoming Maharashtra legislative council polls as it decided against renominating senior leader and state minister Subhash Desai and another party veteran Diwakar Raote for the election to the upper house of the state legislature. Both Desai and Raote, who have been with the Shiv Sena since its inception, are among the 10 retiring members of the legislative council and election for these seats will be held on June 20. As the name of Desai, industries minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government, is missing from the list, it means a cabinet reshuffle looks imminent. If not elected to any of the Houses, Desai has to resign in the next six months after the expiry of his tenure. The terms of both Desai and Raote end in July.Ahir, who was a minister in the previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party coalition government in the state, was associated with the Sharad Pawar-led party since its formation in 1999. He had lost the polls to Shiv Sena in 2014 from Worli seat in Mumbai, which is currently represented by state Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, son of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.Ahir had lost the 2014 assembly election to Shiv Sena's Sunil Shinde. However, ahead of the 2019 state elections, when Aaditya Thackeray was to contest his maiden assembly poll from Worli, Ahir joined the Shiv Sena. 'The Unite for Demicracy' rally started off in Whitehall, opposite 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister from 4 pm and ended at 5:30 pm, reported Global Alliance for Tibet and Persecuted Minorities.Following this, another rally kicked off in Piccadilly Circus where hundreds joined in to mark the poignant chapter in the history of the democracy movement in China.Meanwhile, outside the Chinese Embassy, a vigil rally was held where thousands of protesters joined the rally. It was first started by Dr Stephen Ng and his colleagues soon after the Tiananmen Square Massacre. This year's vigil rally saw the biggest turnout ever since it was started 33 years ago, reported Global Alliance for Tibet and Persecuted Minorities.Upon this rally, two young international journalists from Cardiff University made a documentary where they shot the rally and said that these protests demand the same thing as they did 33 years ago which is democracy and accountability.The documentary also noted that these rallies throw light on the atrocities against the Uyghur community and Tibetan people. It also states that the Hong Kong people were deprived of their basic rights.In the video, Tsering Passang, who has been advocating for the rise of Tibetans in the Chinese world said, "Back in 1989, some liberal-minded Chinese people tried to reform so that people can have more freedom and democracy but unfortunately, the hardliners really crushed down on young students subsequently the regime sent tanks and troops to crush them and thousands of Chinese students ad young people died."He further said that China invaded Tibet in the 1950s and so "We know the pain what our Chinese friends are experiencing whether they are main in China or in Hong Kong elsewhere. So it is our duty to show our moral obligation and our moral responsibility and support and sovereignty to our Chinese friends."Notably, the Tiananmen Massacre took place after the peaceful gatherings of students, workers, and others in Beijing's Tiananmen Square and other Chinese cities in April 1989, calling for freedom of expression, accountability, and an end to corruption. The government responded to the intensifying protests in late May 1989 by declaring martial law.On June 3 and 4, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers fired upon and killed untold numbers of peaceful protesters and bystanders. In Beijing, some citizens attacked army convoys and burned vehicles in response to the military's violence.In that massacre, 10 to 15 thousand people were killed by the army of the Chinese government. Following the killings, the government carried out a nationwide crackdown and arrested thousands of people on "counter-revolution" and other criminal charges, including arson and disrupting social order.The government has never accepted responsibility for the massacre or held any officials legally accountable for the killings.Chinese authorities, over the last year, have increased the harassment and persecution of activists for commemorating June 4, 1989, Tiananmen Massacre, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said. New Delhi: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid a courtesy call to the Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, in New Delhi on Friday.The Chief Minister requested the Union Minister to increase the grant permissible in CSISAC (Component-1) of the National Cooperative Development Corporation for Himalayan and North Eastern States from 20 per cent to 40 per cent.The Chief Minister said that the State Integrated Cooperative Development Project is being operated under CSISAC (Component-1) assisted by the National Cooperative Development Corporation and subsidized by the cooperative in the state of Uttarakhand, read a statement from Uttarakhand's Chief Minister's office.An ambitious plan has been presented by the state government to the National Cooperative Development Corporation to make various cooperative institutions formed in the cooperative sector in the state.In this, arrangements were made to provide fair prices to the farmers for their produce by making joint cooperative farming and other agricultural and allied businesses collectively increasing production and adding value to them.It is in-principle and financial approval was given by the National Cooperative Development Corporation. The above-approved scheme was launched by the Prime Minister.The Chief Minister said that it is very challenging to establish cooperative societies as a commercial unit due to the odd geographical conditions and for this, additional assistance would be required.The Chief Minister requested the Union Home Minister to increase the grant permissible in CSISAC (Component-1) of the National Cooperative Development Corporation to 40 per cent instead of 20 per cent for Himalayan and North Eastern States.
