Beijing: Chinese nationals teaching Mandarin in different parts of Pakistan have left for home after being called back by Beijing following the recent deadly attacks targeting them, an official of the Karachi University said on Monday. Their departure came weeks after a burqa-clad Baloch woman suicide bomber struck a van inside Pakistan's prestigious University of Karachi, killing three Chinese teachers, including the head of the department, and their local driver, in the latest targeted attack against Chinese citizens in the country's financial capital. The banned Balochistan Liberation Army linked Majeed Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack on the teachers that took place on April 26 near China-built Confucius Institute -- a non-profit institute teaching Chinese language to local pupils -- in the university. An official at the University of Karachi said that the Chinese teachers who were teaching at the Confucius Institute on the campus left for home on Sunday.”There were other Chinese teachers working at different campuses in the country and they left yesterday,” he said.Director of the Confucius Institute at the Karachi University, Dr Nasir Uddin, said that the departure of the Chinese teachers was a big setback for the students learning Mandarin. ”We have around 500 students enrolled at the institute and we are now considering having online classes for them so that their term is completed,” he said.He said that the teachers at the different Confucius Institutes in the country have been called back by their government. Nasir Uddin said that the Confucius Institute is a non-profit educational set-up which aims to teach Mandarin, deepen international understanding of the language, and Chinese culture, and promote people-to-people exchanges between China and Pakistan. The BLA suicide bomb attack on April 26 had killed the head of the institute, Huang Guiping, and two other Chinese teachers, Chen Sai and Ding Mupeng, while their local driver Khalid Nawaz also died in the blast. The Chinese government in the past reacted strongly to attacks on its nationals working in Pakistan. The BLA opposes Chinese investment in Pakistan, especially in the restive Balochistan, saying local people do not benefit.Balochistan, bordering Iran and Afghanistan, is home to a long-running violent insurgency. Baloch insurgent groups have previously carried out several attacks targeting the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. This was not the first time Chinese nationals have been the target of terror attacks in Karachi, which is Pakistan's biggest city and economic hub. In July last year, masked armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on a vehicle carrying two Chinese nationals in Karachi in which one of them was critically wounded. In the same month, nearly a dozen Chinese engineers were killed when a bus carrying construction workers was "attacked" in northwest Pakistan. In November 2018, Baloch militants had attacked the Chinese consulate in Karachi but failed to break through the security barrier with three of them killed on the spot.Thousands of Chinese personnel are working in Pakistan on a host of projects being carried out under the aegis of the CPEC.—PTI

Kannauj: A constable has been booked for allegedly raping a woman at a hotel in Mathura after giving her a drink laced with sedatives, police said on Thursday.An FIR was registered against constable Shashi Kapoor, who is posted at Iglas police station of Aligarh, on Wednesday in this regard, Superintendent of Police Prashant Verma said.The FIR was registered at Saurikh police station here, he said.According to the complaint, the constable gave the 22-year-old woman sedatives and took her to the hotel where he raped her in an unconscious state on May 24.The woman said the accused constable was known to her and that he visited her place and told her that his wife was not well, adding that she then went with him after which the incident took place.The victim also alleged that she was threatened by Kapoor, saying that he would make the video of the criminal act viral.Police is probing the matter.—PTI

New Delhi: A country where sport is still not considered a viable career option, incidents of sexual harassment of female athletes by their coaches could discourage parents from sending their daughters to stadiums, fears India’s sports fraternity.Such issues must be handled wisely by the authorities, is the common refrain from current and former sports persons.A female cyclist recently shared her harrowing experience in Slovenia, where the contingent’s chief coach made attempts to sexually harass her.The cyclist was flown back to the country by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), on her request, and the coach was sacked and is facing an investigation.Many Indian athletes are still unaware of the incident but expressed angst when they were told about it.The country’s top archer Deepika Kumari urged the authorities to ensure female athletes’ safety and exhorted her colleagues to bring to light such incidents without fear.“This is utterly shocking. You should remove these persons. We have a free culture in sport where both boys and girls practice together, stay under one roof as they feel it is very safe,” the world number 3 and three-time Olympian said.“Parents these days are reluctant to send their girl child to sport. If such things keep coming up, then they will stop sending them. So it’s for the authorities to remove the culprits far away from the sport. Safety is of utmost importance.” “As for athletes, they should always speak out with confidence. Maybe they fear for their career and reputation, and suppress the matter in some cases. But this way you are giving more freedom to these coaches.” The SAI has already made it mandatory for National Sports Federations (NSFs) to keep women coaches in the contingents if the female athletes are competing, both at home and abroad.Shooter Manu Bhaker said before the instruction was issued, the practice was being followed in her sport.“We always have a female coach or a manager accompanying us on tours. It has become very simple to become a coach, especially at the junior level. To keep a qualified coach is very important so the onus is on the authorities to be strict while appointing them,” she said.Sardar Singh, former India hockey skipper and now a coach with the national men’s team, said such incidents “bring a bad name to Indian sports”.“The step taken by SAI to make it mandatory for a woman coach to accompany women athletes on tours and national camps is a welcome move.“This should have been implemented earlier. Postdam (Germany): New research by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany suggests that living in timber cities could avoid emissions.
The new study shows that housing a growing population in homes made of wood rather than conventional steel and concrete could prevent more than 100 billion tonnes of emissions of greenhouse gas CO2 until 2100. These represent about 10 per cent of the carbon budget still available for the 2°C climate target.
For the supply of construction wood, newly established timber plantations are necessary in addition to the harvest from natural forests. Even though this has no impact on food production, the scientists warn that if the situation is not carefully managed, biodiversity may suffer.
The study is the first to examine the effects of a widespread switch to timber cities on land use, emissions related to land use change, and long-term carbon sequestration in harvested wood products. It was published in the journal - Nature Communications.
Lead author for the study, Abhijeet Mishra, who is also a scientist from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), said, "More than half the world's population currently lives in cities, and by 2100 this number will increase significantly. This means more homes will be built with steel and concrete, most of which have a serious carbon footprint".
"But we have an alternative: We can house the new urban population in mid-rise buildings - that is 4 to 12 stories - made out of wood," added Abhijeet.
As trees take CO2 from the atmosphere to grow, wood is recognised as a renewable resource with the lowest carbon footprint of any comparable building material. Abhijeet explains, "Production of engineered wood releases much less CO2 than production of steel and cement. Engineered wood also stores carbon, making timber cities a unique long-term carbon sink - by 2100, this could save more than 100Gt of additional CO2 emissions, equivalent to 10 per cent of the remaining carbon budget for the 2°C target."
The scientists examined four different land-use scenarios for the paper using the open-source global land use allocation model MAgPIE: one with traditional building materials like cement and steel, and three with increased demand for wood on top of the standard demand for wood. They also examined the sources of the additional high demand for wooden building materials and the potential effects on both direct and indirect land-use-related carbon emissions.
Co-author of the study, Florian Humpenoder explained, "Our simulation shows that sufficient wood for new mid-rise urban buildings can be produced without major repercussion on food production."
"Wood is sourced from timber plantations as well as natural forests. Most of the additional timber plantations needed - we are talking about roughly 140 million hectares - are established on harvested forest areas and thus not at the cost of agricultural land," as Humpenoder underlines. "We need farmland to grow food for the people - using it to grow trees could potentially cause competition for the limited land resources."
Increasing forest harvest levels while protecting the most valuable forests
The effects of replacing natural ecosystems with timber plantations on biodiversity were also examined by scientists. Alexander Popp, head of the land use management group at PIK scientist and co-author of the study, explained: "The question of how and from where to source the wood for the construction of timber cities is crucial. In our computer simulations, we have set a clear limit to timber extraction and for adding new tree plantations: Nothing can be cut off in pristine forests and biodiversity conservation areas." If carefully integrated, these two sectors can remove and store crucial amounts of carbon from the atmosphere without jeopardizing food security or biodiversity. This could become the climate solution we have been desperately looking for."
Galina Churkina (one of the authors of the study) said, "Increasing carbon storage in cities in parallel to land ecosystems is very important for this transition to succeed as a climate change mitigation strategy. Forests have to regrow after harvest and accumulate at least as much carbon as they stored before. The lifespan of timber buildings has to be at least as long as the time needed to repay `the carbon debt' in harvested forests on a sustainable basis."
Lastly, Abhijeet Mishra concluded: "Our study underlines that urban homes made out of wood could play a vital role in climate change mitigation due to their long-term carbon storage potential. Strong governance and careful planning are required to limit negative impacts on biodiversity and to ensure a sustainable transition to timber cities." —ANI

Patna (The Hawk): In a gunfight between two notorious gangs on Friday in Bihar's Katihar district, at least five people are said to have died.
In the Jharkhand districts of Katihar and Sahebganj, the Piku Yadav and Mohana Thakur gangs are active. They have repeatedly clashed over who has the most power in the area.
The shooting between these two gangs began in the Mohana Chandpur village, which is under the jurisdiction of the Barari police station, when at least 40 armed members of the Piku Yadav gang stopped 10 members of the Mohana Thakur gang and began firing on them. The latter returned fire in retaliation as well. The Mohana Thakur Gang members then made an attempt to depart the area toward Bakia village.
According to police sources, one body was found following the altercation. Although the remains of at least five victims of the gunfight have not yet been found, the villagers told the local media that number. Allegedly connected to the Mohana Thakur gang were the deceased.

State Home Minister Narottam Mishra called the clothes and actions in the movie "obscene and condemnable" in response to the movie trailers on Wednesday. If it is not fixed, the state government will be compelled to decide whether or not to screen the movie.
The saffron outfit Deepika Padukone wore in the song "besharam ring" has drawn criticism. The song, which was released on Tuesday, is popular on social media.
Narottam Mishra, a state home minister, responded to the incident by saying, "Deepika Padukone, the actress, is wearing a very offensive outfit, and the song was recorded with a nasty attitude. The songs' situations and outfits need to be adjusted, else we'll have to decide whether to screen it in Madhya Pradesh "Mishra alleged that the actress had aided the "Tukde Tukde" gang.
Notably, the opposition leader in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Govind Singh, has also voiced his displeasure with the song's costumes. "The song's scenes and costumes are abhorrent in every way. Such behaviour is not appropriate in Indian culture "Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Singh stated.
A demonstration was organised against the movie by the right-wing Sanskriti Bachao Manch, which dubbed saffron "a shameful colour with vulgarity." Sanskriti Bachao Manch activists criticised Deepika Padukone's attire because she was seen donning saffron-colored clothing.
According to Chandrashekhar Tiwari, "Our saffron dress is being insulted, and Sanskruti Bachao Manch will not stand for it. Shahrukh Khan, you thought of Vaishno Devi when Hindus began to boycott your movie. Because Indians made you famous, you will need to apologise to all Hindus and take the song out of this movie. Why do you constantly tarnish your reputation, Shahrukh Khan, by engaging in such behaviour? You should apologise to every adherent of Sanatan Dharma."

Hrithik and Saba were seen attending the star-studded launch of Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai.

In the picture posted by a Twitter user, Hrithik is seen holding Saba's heels.

Mumbai: The shooting for the Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone-starrer 'Kalki 2898 AD' has resumed in Hyderabad.  A picture from the shoot was uploaded on the official Instagram page for the film. It had a sticker that says "shooting time" pasted on the image. According to reports the shoot schedule began in Hyderabad. The cast and crew will be filming important scenes with the main actors until August 28. Along with Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, the film features Disha Patani in important roles. The futuristic sci-fi movie directed by Nag Ashwin. The film was announced under the working title 'Project K' in February 2020 coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Vyjayanthi Movies. However, the production was delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Filming began in July 2021 in a futuristic set at Ramoji Film City, in Hyderabad. The film is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 600 crore. In June, Amitabh revealed why he skipped the 'Kalki 2898 AD' panel at San Diego's Comic-Con. He shared that filmmaker Nag Ashwin wanted him to come along but "work and medical restrictions have kept me away." Amitabh took to his blog and wrote: "Alright .. so .. San Diego and K , the project .. a great moment for the film and the makers and all those that went there for the release of the first look for it .. I was pushed hard by Nagi Sir to come along, but work and medical restrictions have kept me away from many such occasions." The cine icon shared that the first look "was pretty darn good." "So .. but I must admit that the first look was pretty darn good .. wasn't it .. style, music, frames .. everything .... and finally the reveal of K .. KALKI .. mythologically so important .. 2898 AD !! 'AD' has been changed has it not," he wrote.  The San Diego's Comic-Con was attended physically by Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Rana Daggubati. Big B joined the panel via a zoom video call. In the event it was announced that the film, which was earlier titled 'Project K', has been titled 'Kalki 2898 AD'. This action is part of that – Putin again has failed to show up for the G20, but we will show up with support for Ukraine." Rishi Sunak's remarks come ahead of his arrival in New Delhi for the G20 Summit which is due to be held in Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on September 9-10. Sunak shared the post in response to a statement made by UK Prime Minister's Office on X which reads, "The war in Ukraine continues to affect us all. We’re making sure food exports get out of Ukraine to countries that need it: Establishing surveillance in the Black Sea Providing £3m funding for the World Food Programme Convening an international food security summit." UK Prime Minister's Office in a press release said that during the G20 summit Rishi Sunak would emphasise that global leaders must make it clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin's withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative has increased Russia’s global isolation, and pledge to protect those whose lives have been devastated by the ongoing conflict. According to the release G20 leaders will on Saturday gather in Delhi to discuss the big challenges faced by the world, including the spike in the cost of living driven by Putin’s actions. The press release said, "At the summit, the Prime Minister will stress the importance of those who do choose to attend demonstrating their leadership, both in helping the world’s most vulnerable people to deal with the terrible consequences of Putin’s war and in addressing wider challenges like climate change and the stability of the global economy." "Once again, Vladimir Putin is failing to show his face at the G20. He is the architect of his own diplomatic exile, isolating himself in his presidential palace and blocking out criticism and reality" the release from the UK Prime Minister's office said.  "Russia has displaced 11 million people from their homes, manipulated global energy prices and made daily life more difficult for households across the planet" it added. "The rest of the G20, meanwhile, are demonstrating that we will turn up and work together to pick up the pieces of Putin’s destruction. That starts with dealing with the terrible global consequences of Putin’s stranglehold over the most fundamental resources, including his blockade of and attacks on Ukrainian grain" the statement added. According to the press release, the UK will host an international food security summit later this year and increase support for vulnerable people worst hit by rising food prices.
