Guadalajara, Mexico (The Hawk): At the Guadalajara Open Akron on Thursday, American tennis player Coco Gauff easily defeated Martina Trevisan 6-0, 6-3 to advance to her third quarterfinal of a WTA 1000 tournament this year.
Gauff, the No. 5 seed, outscored Trevisan in the opening nine games of their repeat of their semifinal encounter at Roland Garros, which Gauff also won in straight sets. She took the lead right away owing to a vital hold of service at 2-0 in the opening set. Before Gauff held, Trevisan led 0-40 and had a total of four break points.
Although she was broken in the eighth, the American saved the first seven break points she faced and prevented Trevisan from gaining any momentum. Gauff saved another break point before breaking once more for the fifth time in the match and serving out the victory in 61 minutes.
Martina is a fantastic player and has had a successful season, so facing her is never easy. The serve and my forehand set up a lot of short balls for me today, according to Gauff.
Gauff has lost to Simona Halep in Montreal and Iga Swiatek in Doha this year in the quarterfinals of WTA 1000 tournaments.
She will play either Victoria Azarenka or fellow countrywoman Madison Keys for a position in her second WTA 1000 semifinal of her career as neither of those women entered this week.

New Delhi (The Hawk): According to a recent study, easing Covid-19 limitations nearly doubled the risk of a severe episode for those with asthma.
The research, which was published in the journal Thorax, discovered a rise in the likelihood of asthma episodes following the removal of the pandemic limitations.
Following the lifting of prohibitions, there was a decrease in the use of facial coverings and an increase in social interaction, which increased the risk of acute respiratory illnesses like COVID-19.
Additionally, the study discovered that Covid-19 did not significantly increase the risk of asthma attacks compared to other respiratory illnesses.
According to professor Adrian Martineau, "this demonstrates that easing of Covid-19 limitations coincided with an increased incidence of severe asthma attacks."
The research's lead author, Clinical Professor of Respiratory Infection and Immunity at Queen Mary University of London Martineau, said the findings "do raise the possibility that some elements of the public health measures introduced during the pandemic - such as wearing face masks - could help in reducing respiratory illnesses going forward."
1.7% of participants reported having a serious asthma attack in the month prior in April 2021, when rules about social mingling and face coverings began to be eased. This percentage increased to 3.7% in January 2022, more than doubling from the previous month.
Data from 2,312 UK individuals with asthma who took part in the Queen Mary's COVIDENCE UK project between November 2020 and April 2022 were analysed for the study.
Through the use of monthly online surveys, data on face covering usage, social interaction, and asthma symptoms were gathered.
Asthma attacks were not substantially more likely to be brought on by Covid-19 than by other respiratory illnesses in the study subjects, according to Dr. Florence Tydeman, the paper's first author.

Bengaluru: Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt, who is currently shooting for 'KD', a Kannada pan-India movie in surrounding areas of Bengaluru, has been injured while shooting a bomb explosion sequence, sources stated on Wednesday.

The sources explained that while shooting the bomb explosion scene, Sanjay Dutt suffered injuries on his elbow, hand and face. The shooting of the film has been halted following the incident.

Fight master Dr Ravi Varma was composing a fight for the movie. The incident had come to light lately and exact details of the incident are yet to be known. The incident had taken place at Magadi Road in Bengaluru and Sanju Baba is recovering from the injuries, sources in the film industry explained.

Washington: Thousands of people gathered in the US capital to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s galvanising “I have a dream” speech, which is considered one of the pivotal events in the 1960s American civil rights movement, The Washington Post reported. The 1963 march is believed to have brought more than 2,50,000 people in Washington to push for an end to discrimination on the basis of race, colour, religion, sex, or national origin. The people gathered again at the Lincoln Memorial here on Saturday to declare that King’s dream is "newly threatened and the fruits of his work are at risk," as per The Post. On a sweltering August day, the marchers came from distant cities to the site where King stood to assert that his crusade was being assailed, that court rulings, legislation and political extremism have undone or stymied the racial and social progress of the last half-century. The day-long rally consisted of speeches by leaders of civil and human rights groups, and representatives from an array of other organizations, The Post reported. “If I could speak to my grandfather today, I would say, ‘I’m sorry we still have to be here to rededicate ourselves to finishing your work, and ultimately realizing your hidden dream,’” King’s granddaughter Yolanda Renee King told the crowd. Her father, King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King III, said: “I’m very concerned about the direction our country is going in. … Instead of moving forward, it feels as if we are moving backward.” “Democracy, voting rights and the rights of women and children must be protected, and gun violence must end, he said. Echoing the words of his father 60 years ago, he said, “then maybe one day we will be a great nation,” Washington Post quoted him as saying. College students, retirees, a psychotherapist, a landscaper, members of Black sororities and fraternities and a sprinkling of 1963 March veterans, among others, converged before the memorial to hear the speakers and be heard themselves. They carried signs that read “Stop Voter Suppression,” “Immigration is not a crime” and “Protect LGBTQ+ families.” Among the speakers, was Andrew Young Jr., who at 91 is one of the last living civil rights leaders of his generation and was present at the 1963 march. His career included turns as Atlanta mayor, a member of Congress and a United Nations ambassador. He reminded the crowd of the power of voting. Tens of thousands from across the country came to the 1963 March, a gathering that helped spur the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — the most important civil rights legislation since the post-Civil War era of Reconstruction. The legislation outlawed segregation in theaters, restaurants and hotels in the US, according to the National Archives. Washington: Inter Miami and Newell's Old Boys will meet in a pre-season soccer friendly in Fort Lauderdale in February, a match that will pit Lionel Messi and Gerardo Martino against their former club.  The game will be played at Inter Miami's DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on February 15, both clubs said late on Monday, reports Xinhua.  "I'm delighted to be able to welcome my beloved Newell's to our home in Miami," said Inter Miami manager Martino, who made a club record 505 first-team appearances with the Argentine outfit in the 1980s and 90s.  He added: "It will be a special game because of everything that Newell's Old Boys means to me. It will also be a good opportunity to prepare for what is sure to be an exciting season."  Inter Miami said tickets for the match would go on sale on Tuesday.  In a separate statement, Newell's described the fixture as "unique" and "full of history", adding that it would connect to the football roots of Messi and Martino.  Messi joined Inter Miami on a free transfer in July after parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain.  He scored 11 goals in 14 games during his first season with the Herons, helping them win the 2023 Leagues Cup, the club's first ever trophy.

Los Angeles: 'Game of Thrones' author George R R Martin has shared with fans that he has three animated projects, set in the world of 'A Song of Ice &amp; Fire', currently under various stages of development with HBO.
The 75-year-old writer, in his new blog post, shared his love for Netflix's animated series 'Blue Eye Samurai' and then pivoted to share updates on the new shows.  "As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A Song of Ice &amp; Fire. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them," Martin shared, adding they began with four ideas for animated show but two of them currently stand shelved.

Talking about the third show in the development, Martin wrote, "Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however... and meanwhile, we have moved nine voyages, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully."  The writer said 'budgetary constraints' would likely have made a live action version expensive as half of the show is set at sea.  "So we now have three animated projects underway...Will any of them make it to air? happen? No way to know. Nothing is certain in Hollywood. But if it does happen, with one or two or all three shows, I hope we can make them as good as gorgeous and gripping as Blue Eye Samurai. We will for d*** sure try," the famous writer said.

Martin's books in the 'Game of Thrones' series became the basis for HBO's mega hit show that spanned for eight seasons and he is also the creative mind behind 'House of the Dragon', a show set 200 years before the events of 'Game of Thrones'.  The second season of the 'House of Dragon' will premiere this summer.
