Colombo: A lawyer has moved a Sri Lankan court seeking direction to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to immediately arrest seven persons, including former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa while alleging conspiracy to commit criminal intimidation and abetting attack on a peaceful protest in front of the Temple Trees and Galle Face earlier this week.According to Daily Mirror, a personal complaint has been lodged before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court by a lawyer requesting to direct the CID for the arrests.More than 100 protestors were injured at the Galle Face protest site during violent clashes resulting in a nationwide curfew with the country’s tri forces ordered to shoot at sight all those who plunder public property or cause personal harm last Tuesday. Mahinda Rajapaksa, who recently tendered his resignation from the position of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, has been barred from leaving the country by a local court.The travel ban has also been imposed on Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son and former Minister Namal Rajapaksa, Johnston Fernando, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, C B Rathnayake, Sanath Nishantha, and Sanjeewa Edirimanne, among others, News Wire reported citing sources. Mahinda Rajapaksa and some of his family members were shifted to Trincomalee Naval Base, a day after he resigned following violent protests that led to a nationwide curfew. Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence with food and fuel shortages, soaring prices and power cuts affecting a large number of the citizens, resulting in massive protests over the government’s handling of the situation.The recession is attributed to foreign exchange shortages caused by a fall in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as reckless economic policies, like the government’s move last year to ban chemical fertilizers in a bid to make Sri Lanka’s agriculture “100 per cent organic”. Mathura: Lawyers in the district abstained from work on Wednesday to protest against an Uttar Pradesh government order recommending action against errant lawyers creating lawlessness in district courts. The order was issued by Praful Kamal, special secretary, Uttar Pradesh government to district magistrates.The Bar Association of Mathura observed no court work day on Wednesday to protest against the insulting language used in the letter, Ajeet Teharia, president of the Bar Association said. The letter asks officials to take cognisance of those lawyers creating lawlessness in courts and ensure appropriate action against them, Teharia claimed.—PTI

New Delhi: A Hindu right-wing group involved in litigation related to various high-profile matters like Gyanvapi mosque, Idgah mosque in Mathura and Taj Mahal has decided to remove lawyers Harishankar Jain and his son Vishnu Jain from its all cases, its president said. Jitendra Singh Visen, president of Vishwa Vaidik Sanatan Sangh, however, refused to divulge the reason behind the decision. When asked about it, Vishnu Jain told&nbsp;PTI&nbsp;that they will continue to represent four of the petitioners in the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri case hearing in Varanasi.Visen said that they will move an application for the removal of the two lawyers at the next hearing."We have decided to remove the two lawyers from appearing in all our cases from the district court to the Supreme Court. We will file an application for cancellation of their name at the next court hearing in the Kashi Vishwanath-Gyanvapi mosque case," the VVSS chief told&nbsp;PTI.Apart from the Gyanvapi mosque case, the father-son duo is representing the plaintiffs associated with VVSS in Krishna Janmabhoomi-Idgah mosque in Mathura, seeking restoration of 27 Hindu and Jain temples in Qutub Minar in Delhi, the one seeking a ‘‘fact-finding inquiry'‘ into the history of the Taj Mahal and the “opening of 22 rooms'‘ on the monument's premises.Visen said he has resigned as national convener and national general secretary in the Hind Samrajya Party run by the Jain duo.Reacting to the decision, Vishnu Jain told PTI that there are five plaintiffs in the Kashi Vishwanath-Mosque case including Rekha Singh who is the niece of Visen."We will continue to represent four other petitioners in the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri case hearing in Varanasi," Vishnu Jain said. Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday dismissed 841 government lawyers with immediate effect.The services of all public prosecutors appointed in the Allahabad High Court have been terminated.Nikunj Mittal, Special Secretary, Law and Justice Department, issued this order.According to this order, 505 State Law Officers from the Principal Bench of the Allahabad High Court and 336 Government Lawyers from the Lucknow Bench of the High Court have been discharged from their duty.The state government has also removed Additional Advocate General Vinod Kant as a part of this change.In addition, 26 Additional Chief Permanent Advocates were removed from the Prayagraj Principal Bench, and 179 permanent advocates were also granted leave.At the same time, the services of 111 civil brief holders were terminated while 141 criminal brief holders have also been removed, and 47 additional government advocates have been dismissed.The services of the Lucknow Bench's two Chief Standing Councils have also been terminated.With immediate effect, 33 additional government advocates, 66 from the criminal side, and 176 civil brief holders were also disengaged.In addition, the services of 59 Additional Chief Standing Council and Standing Council members have been terminated.However, no reason has been given for the removal in the government letter. The government, according to the sources, has terminated services based on the performances of these law officers. —IANS

Mathura: A lawyer from Mathura waged and won a legal battle in the consumer forum for 21 long years against Indian Railways which charged him Rs 20 extra.
Now, after more than two decades of fighting in court, the Consumer Forum has ruled in favour of the lawyer. The matter dates back to December 25, 1999 when Advocate Tungnath Chaturvedi, resident of Gali Pirpanch of Mathura reached Mathura Cantt station to take a train to Moradabad. He asked for two tickets for Moradabad at the ticket counter where the booking clerk took Rs 90 instead of Rs 70.
At Rs 35 per person ticket, two tickets would have cost him Rs 70. However, the booking clerk took from him Rs 90 Advocate Chaturvedi asked for the return of Rs 20 but from the booking clerk refused to do so. Meanwhile, as his train had arrived at the station, Chaturvedi boarded and departed for his destination Moradabad.
However, he later filed a case in the Consumer Forum in the matter complaining of taking Rs 20 more than the prescribed ticket price. In this case, the General Manager of North Eastern Railway Gorakhpur and the window booking clerk of Mathura Cantonment railway station were made parties.
After 21 years, the Consumer Forum gave a verdict in favour of Advocate Tungnath Chaturvedi and ordered Railways to pay Rs 20 per annum with 12 per cent interest as a fine of Rs 15 for the mental harassment and litigation expenses.
The Consumer Forum has ordered the Railways to pay the amount within 30 days. The Forum said if Railways does not pay the amount within 30 days, the amount will be paid at 15 per cent interest per annum on Rs 20.
"It took time to get justice. But I am satisfied that the decision against the illegal thing has finally come," said Chaturvedi.
He said that his family members and neighbours had several times insisted that he let go of the matter but he continued his fight for justice.
Chaturvedi's family and neighbours have expressed their happiness that the Forum had favoured him in its decision. One of his neighbours said that one should always raise his voice against injustice. —ANI

Chennai: At a time when political establishments in the country are talking about freebies, it was a city based late young advocate S. Subramaiam Balaji who had crusaded against it.
Balaji crusaded against the populist freebies announced first by the DMK party and followed by rival AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and later by several other parties in the country.
He began his crusade petitioning the Tamil Nadu government, the Election Commission of India and then approached the Madras High Court and after that the Supreme Court.
It was a very long battle which he had lost at every step but Balaji was unfazed as he was of the firm view that private assets cannot be created out of public funds.
He had said announcing freebies is a corrupt practice under Section 123 of the Representation of People's Act.
The apex court in 2013, while not banning freebie schemes, had ordered the Election Commission to frame guidelines for political parties to announce freebies in their election manifestos.
Balaji had strongly felt a golden opportunity was lost to reign in political parties from creating private assets out of public money to be in power.
The top court had observed that promising freebies in the election manifesto doesn't amount to a corrupt practice under Section 123 of the Representation of Peoples Act, while ordering the Election Commission to frame guidelines for political parties.
The court gave the ruling after Balaji filed a case against the distribution of free colour television sets by the DMK to the people as part of its pre-election promise in 2006.
In an attempt to outdo the DMK, the AIADMK then under late J. Jayalalithaa promised mixers, grinders, fans and laptops and other freebies during the 2011 assembly polls.
Cheap rice, free TV, free power, free stove, cash dole promises by political parties is nothing but "bribery", Balaji had contended.
A government cannot enrich private individuals out of consolidated funds. Giving free land or free TVs or monthly cash doles are precisely that, Balaji had said.
Responding to one of his complaints, the poll panel took the stand that a declaration of public policy or a promise of public action - like giving away free colour TVs - was an offence under Section 171-B of the IPC.
Food is one of the three essentials for a person to live. It comes under public policy. But a colour TV is not an essential item, he had said.
Taking on the high and mighty was not new to Balaji.
It was his public interest petition in the Madras High Court that brought in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the involvement of some high-ranking Tamil Nadu police officials in the Telgi fake stamp paper scam.
Hailing from a family of lawyers, Balaji's father N. Sivasankaran is a High Court lawyer and his elder sister Mahalakshmi Ramaswamy is a lawyer, too.
Balaji had varied academic interests. Prior to his law degree, he had done M.Phil in Defence Studies.
Though Balaji died in 2017 at a very young age, a couple of months after meeting with a road accident and suffering head injuries, the issue he had raised and crusaded against will continue for long in the country.
The judgement in the case filed by him, is a landmark one. It is being/will be cited/quoted on this eternal topic. The young crusader had left his imprint in the legal books which not many advocates are fortunate enough to do.&nbsp;&nbsp;

San Francisco: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is set to depose before the Twitter lawyers earlier this week in the $44 billion takeover deal that he has terminated.&nbsp;
The deposition is slated for September 26-27 and may run into September 28 if needed, according to court filings, reports Benzinga.&nbsp;
The deposition, ahead of the full-blown October 17 legal trial in the Delaware Court of Chancery in the US, will not be a public one.
Earlier, in a minor win for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a US court allowed his legal team to make a case that a $7.75 million severance payment to Peiter ‘Mudge’ Zatko, Twitter’s former head of security, allows him to terminate the $44 billion takeover deal.
Judge Kathleen McCormick ruled last week that Musk can amend his counterclaims to include the payment to Zatko.
The ruling means that Musk can use the Zatko payment for his argument regarding terminating the deal. Twitter did not oppose the motion, Barron’s had reported.
Twitter is also seeking if there is a connection between its former head of security and Musk.
Musk has said that the testimony of Twitter whistleblower justifies his termination of the $44 billion deal to buy the micro-blogging platform.
Twitter shareholders had voted to approve the buyout by Musk amid the legal battle.&nbsp;

New Delhi: A complaint against Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekar for his recent comments disparaging the Hindu holy book Ramcharitmanas was lodged with Delhi Police on Thursday by a Delhi-based lawyer who practises in the Supreme Court of India.The complainant seeks direction to lodge FIR against him and take strict legal action.The lawyer stated in his complaint that Minister of Education for the state of Bihar Chandershekar had committed an offence under sections 153A and B, 295, 298 and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), all of which are cognizable offences and very serious in nature.In his case, advocate Vineet Jindal claimed that the Minister had made a "provocative, offensive, disparaging, and inciting statement" about the Ramcharitmanas (which has been read with faith by Hindus) with the intention of offending Hindus.Recently, the complainant watched a video and read news articles in which Chandrashekar said, “The three books, Manusmriti, Ramcharitmanas, and Bunch of Thoughts have been spreading caste-related hatred in different eras,” as stated in the complaint.Jindal also claimed that during the speech event, Chandrashekhar said that books like Manusmriti, Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, and Bunch of Thoughts by Madhav Sadashivrao Golwalkar contributed to keeping 85% of the country's population in a backwards state. “He claimed that while Manusmriti abuses lower castes, Ramcharitmanas advocates keeping lower caste people illiterate,” he said in his complaint.The complaint was transferred to the Delhi Police Department's Cyber Crime Unit and the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).The Education Minister of Bihar allegedly went on to say that Ramcharitmanas should be burned because they discourage the education of Dalits, members of lower castes, and women.“By these words against Ramcharitmanas, a holy book for all Hindus, he is targeting the Hindu community with the intent to divide and incite hated by using derogatory words for holy books. The contents of the statement made by him clearly show his intent of instigating enmity between two groups on the grounds of caste and he also made inciting statements against the Hindu community. Being Hindu by religion, my religious sentiments are deeply hurt by the statement given by Chandershekar,” the complainant said.

Lucknow: The murder of lawyer Umesh Pal in Prayagraj on February 24 has left behind a bloody trail of killings, but the case ultimately may not have any convicts -- the simple reason being that six main accused have been killed.
Ever since Umesh Pal's murder, a total of six of the eight accused have been killed in connection with the case. Arbaaz, who was reportedly the driver of the killers' vehicle on February 24, was killed in an encounter on February 27 in Prayagraj.
Usman a.k.a. Vijay Chaudhary was killed on March 6 in another alleged encounter in Prayagraj.
Asad, son of Atiq Ahmad, and shooter Ghulam were killed in an encounter by police in Jhansi on April 13.
Asad and Ghulam were caught on camera firing shots at Umesh Pal.
The masterminds of the Umesh Pal murder, Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad, were shot dead at point-blank range by three men on Saturday night in Prayagraj.
Atiq Ahmad, a former Samajwadi Party MP, and his brother were brought to Prayagraj from Gujarat's Sabarmati jail for a court hearing in connection with Umesh Pal's murder case and were in police custody at the time of their killing.
The owner of Creta used in the crime, identified as Rukhsar Ahmed, was earlier nabbed from Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh.
Rukhsar Ahmed's name was registered in the documents of Creta and sources said he was the operator of a travel agency in Kareli, Prayagraj.
After the incident, Rukhsar had absconded with the family.
Nafees Ahmed, the owner of a Biryani eatery, had transferred the car to Rukhsar Ahmed, a resident of Kareli. Car owner Rukhsar Ahmed is said to be a close relative of Nafees Ahmed.
The remaining two other accused, Guddu Muslim and Sabir, are currently on the run and each carries a reward of Rs 5 lakh.
Shaista Parveen, wife of Atiq Ahmad, is also absconding. She carries a reward of Rs 50,000 on her head. She is named as a conspirator in the case. According to STF sources, they have been tracking Guddu Muslim and Sabir for some time now and the two could be arrested soon.
It may be recalled that on the basis of the complaint lodged by Umesh Pal's wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered at Dhoomanganj police station against Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam and nine others.
They have been booked under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Explosive Substances Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act.&nbsp;

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday made it clear that it will not go into the personal laws governing marriages while deciding the pleas seeking legal validation for same-sex marriages and asked the lawyers to advance arguments on the Special Marriage Act.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud termed the issue involving the pleas “complex” and said the very notion of a man and a woman, as referred to in the Special Marriage Act, is not “an absolute based on genitals".

“It is not the question of what your genitals are. It is far more complex, that's the point. So, even when the Special Marriage Act says man and woman, the very notion of a man and a woman is not an absolute based on genitals,” said the bench, which also comprised justices Justices S K Kaul, S R Bhat, Hima Kohli and P S Narasimha. New Delhi: A man dressed as a lawyer fired multiple rounds at a woman and injured her in the Saket court complex in south Delhi on Friday, triggering panic inside the premises and raising questions about law and order in the national capital.
Police said the man, a former advocate at the Saket court, had filed a case of cheating against the woman over a monetary dispute involving Rs 25 lakh and the hearing in the case was scheduled for Friday.
Videos of the incident showed the man and the woman having an argument outside a building in the court complex and the man pulling out a gun and running after her.
He fires two rounds from a close range at the woman, who scrambles to move away from him screaming for help. The man then fires a third round.
People present there ran in panic and one of them could be heard saying 'someone save the woman'.
The man them moves inside the building and the woman is taken away by people and security personnel present there. Eyewitnesses said at least two more rounds were fired during the incident around 10.30 am.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chowdhary said the woman, M Radha (aged above 40), was shot in her abdomen and a hand. She was admitted to Max Hospital in Saket and her condition is stable.
The attacker managed to escape through the back entry in the building and teams have been formed to nab him.
"He had lodged a case under IPC Section 420 (cheating) against the victim and advocate Rajendra Jha," Chowdhary said.
After the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet that law and order in the national capital has completely broken down. Sharing a video of the incident, he asked, 'LG sir, what's happening in our Delhi.'
In another tweet in Hindi, he said, 'The law and order situation in Delhi has completely broken down. Instead of obstructing the work of others and doing dirty politics on everything, everyone should focus on their own work. If one cannot handle it, they should resign and let someone else take care of it. The safety of the people cannot be left to god's will.'
Aam Aadmi Party chief spokesperson and cabinet minister Saurabh Bharadwaj too trained his gun at Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, saying he should take responsibility for the incident as Delhi Police report to him.
'The LG has only two jobs -- Police and DDA. After the arrival of the new LG sir, the law and order situation in Delhi has gotten worse. Guns are fired in courts. The police is involved in Rs 350-crore corruption,' he tweeted in Hindi.
A police source said the accused was an advocate who was suspended by the Saket Court Bar Association.
He had allegedly loaned Rs 25 lakh on interest to the woman and she was defaulting on repayment.
Saket Court Bar Association president Vinod Sharma confirmed the accused's membership was suspended by the bar association.
He condemned the incident, saying no person should take the law into their hands and people in the legal profession should especially ensure that. In 2021, jailed gangster Jitendra Gogi was shot dead by two men posing as lawyers inside a crowded Rohini courtroom.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has come to the rescue of a specially-abled lawyer and judicial services aspirant who was denied by the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission to use a scribe for the judicial services examination scheduled on April 30.

The petitioner, Dhananjay Kumar suffers from "writer's cramp (task specific dystonia, i.e., unable to write)" and is undergoing treatment at the Department of Neurology, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi.

Kumar, as an aspirant for judicial services, filled the form for Uttarakhand Judicial Services Examination which is conducted by the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission. The examination is scheduled on April 30.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha said: "Bearing in mind the principles which have been laid down in the decision of this court in Vikash Kumar Vs Union Public Service Commission &amp; Ors , we issue an ad interim direction to the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission which is in-charge of conducting the examination to ensure that a scribe is provided to the petitioner for the ensuing examination".

The bench said, "This shall be without prejudice to the rights and conditions of the parties and subject to such further orders as may be passed by this court. Issue notice returnable on 12 May 2023. Liberty to serve the Standing Counsel for the State of Uttarakhand".

The petition was mentioned in the morning before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud on April 28, for urgent hearing. The top court listed the matter for hearing the same day.

Advocate Namit Saxena, representing Kumar, submitted a representation for the facility of a scribe to enable him to appear in the examination, however the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission through an email dated April 26, 2023 rejected the said request made by him.

After hearing Saxena, the top court issued notice in the matter and as an interim direction directed the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission to provide the petitioner with the facility of a scribe for the upcoming examination.

Kumar's plea said: "The Petitioner is constrained to move this Hon'ble Court by way of the present writ petition on account of unfair, unreasonable and arbitrary decision of the respondents wherein and whereby the respondents denied the representation of the petitioner requesting a scribe to attempt and write the Uttarakhand Judicial Service Civil judge (Preliminary) Examination - 2023, which is directly violative of Articles 14, 19(1)(g) and 21 of the Indian Constitution and against the basis of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act".

The plea said. "That the entire career of the petitioner has been jeopardised by the decision of the respondent and his performance will be compromised in the Uttarakhand Judicial Service Civil judge (Preliminary) Examination a" 2023, which is to be held on 30.04.2023, thereby directly snatching away his fundamental rights as guaranteed under the Indian Constitution". Prayagraj: Guddu Muslim, the main accused in the February 24 murders of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police guards, has been eluding the police for over two months now.
Guddu was caught on camera hurling crude bombs at Umesh Pal during the incident. The CCTV footage of him lobbing bombs had gone viral on social media after the attack.
Officials investigating the case now say that they are changing their strategy to arrest Guddu Muslim.
"Sources have told us that Guddu Muslim is adept at changing his appearance and disguising himself. We have prepared sketches of him in various disguises - with or without a beard and moustache. Guddu might have also changed his name and may be living at his hideout with a Hindu identity. He may be even living as a beggar outside a temple and we are investigating all possibilities," a senior police officer claimed.
Police officials said Guddu Muslim had fled to Jhansi and then Meerut after Umesh Pal's murder. After staying at gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed's sister Ayesha Noori's home, Guddu went to Delhi, police claimed.
Before the police and STF team could find his location, Guddu left Delhi for Ajmer. His location was also traced to Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, officials added.&nbsp;

Prayagraj: The Prayagraj police have recovered a pistol and some cartridges from the residence of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed's lawyer Khan Saulat Haneef.
The lawyer has been booked under the Arms Act for the offence.
The court had granted the police a 12-hour custody remand of Saulat Haneef in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case during which the lawyer was interrogated and his residence raided.
Heavy security arrangements were in place at Dhoomanganj police station, where the 61-year-old was interrogated. In the afternoon, he was taken to his house in the Pritam Nagar locality from where the police recovered three phones, a country-made 9 mm pistol and three cartridges.
One of the phones recovered was used to send photographs of Umesh Pal to Asad's phone four days before Pal was killed outside his residence on February 24 this year, police said.
Asad, one of the sons of Atiq Ahmed, was killed in an exchange of fire with police last month.
The police had reportedly recovered evidence from Asad's phone that suggested that Haneef had sent him at least 10 photographs of Pal on February 19.
Haneef was booked for Pal's murder on the basis of this evidence.
A senior police official involved in the investigation, said, "Saulat Haneef's interrogation provided vital clues to the police which will help the police in collecting concrete evidence against the accused involved in the Umesh Pal murder case."
The lawyer was also reportedly asked about the various 'benami' properties of Atiq in Prayagraj, Lucknow, western UP and in other states. Khan was said to have disclosed the names of some of Atiq's financiers and business partners. On March 28, Saulat Haneef was awarded life imprisonment by a court in the Umesh Pal abduction case.
In an FIR lodged in 2007, Umesh Pal alleged that he was abducted and taken hostage at Atiq's office in Prayagraj's Chakia locality. Atiq and others allegedly tortured Pal and forced him to withdraw his statement given as a witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case.&nbsp;

New Delhi: A video capturing an intense fight between two lawyers, one of whom is a woman, within the premises of the Rohini court, has taken social media by storm.

The woman lawyer, Neha Gupta, had lodged a formal complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) against her male counterpart, accusing him of subjecting her to a series of grave offenses.

The charges levelled against the male lawyer, Vishnu Kumar Sharma include harassment, verbal assaults, physical violence, and intimidating behaviour.

The incident occurred on Thursday.

In her complaint, the woman lawyer alleged that on May 18 when she was standing in front of Court N0-113 in Rohini Court, another advocate Sharma came and started assaulting her.

"Despite my repeated efforts to free myself from his grasp, Sharma continued to beat me relentlessly, resulting in numerous injuries to my face and other parts of my body," she said.

A senior police official said that they have received that complaint and further investigation is going on in the matter. IANS

New Delhi: Supreme Court lawyer Vineet Jindal has lodged a formal complaint against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accusing them of making inflammatory remarks regarding the President's caste.
In his complaint filed with the Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, Jindal has alleged that the intention behind thee statements was to create discord among various communities and groups, while attempting to foster a sense of mistrust towards the Centre.
The complaint seeks appropriate action against the accused parties for their alleged actions which according to him is an offence under section 121, 153A, 505 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
"I am filing this complaint against Congress president Malli-karjun Kharge and Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister Delhi, and others who have made provocative, inflammatory, derogatory, and inciting statements with the sole motive of promoting enmity between the community by mentioning the caste of the President of India Droupadi Murmu.
"Recently I have seen many prominent leaders in media reports making provocative statements by referring to the caste of our Hon'ble President of India regarding the event of the Inauguration of the new Parliament building. "The statements given by Kharge and Kejriwal have been made intentionally, to refer to the caste of the esteemed President of India with the objective of portraying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the present Government have deliberately not invited the President for the inauguration of the new Parliament building.
"These statements are widely published and circulated in news and social media and would result in provoking the ST and Adivasi community as our honorable President too belongs to Adivasi and ST community.
"Such statements made by influential political leaders on the ground of caste and against the duly elected government to promote enmity among communities/groups are highly condemnable. The political leaders just for the sake of their political gain should not be allowed to stoop to the level of disgracing the highest constitutional posts. Besides, it would cause fear in the community creating distrust against the duly elected government, which are offenses under section 121, 153A, 505, 34 IPC which are cognizable offenses and very serious in nature," the complaint added.—IANS

Meerut: A woman lawyer, aged around 35 years, was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne assailants when she was returning home after buying milk, police said on Thursday. The victim Anjali Garg received a bullet in the head and collapsed at the gate of her house in the New Mewla Colony under the Transport Nagar police station on Wednesday. Police rushed her to hospital where the doctors declared her dead. Anjali had approached the police a fortnight ago, expressing concerns about her safety and citing threats to her life. Her relatives filed a police complaint against her former husband Nitin Garg, and his father Pawan Garg, and both of whom have been arrested in connection with the crime. Police said Anjali was involved in a property dispute with her ex-husband's family after their divorce. "Anjali and her husband Nitin Garg had divorced in 2020, and as part of the settlement, Anjali was supposed to vacate the house in exchange for five shops. However, she did not comply with the agreement, leading to tension between her and the Garg family. Anjali derived income from renting out the shops, and Pawan and Nitin wanted the house back. The conflict escalated over time," said SP (city) Piyush Kumar. The officials said Anjali had also sought help from the office of the IG of Meerut range on May 18, expressing her fear for her life. In her application, she accused Pawan of threatening her. She claimed that he had even brought two men to her house, pointing fingers at it. "If anything untoward happens to me, Pawan and his associates will be responsible," she stated. —IANS

New Delhi: In response to the Law Commissions call for suggestions on Uniform Civil Code All India Lawyers Union (AILU) said that imposition of UCC was neither necessary nor desirable at this stage at all.  "The projection of the concept of Uniform Civil Code and initiation of the campaign for the same by none other than the Prime Minister of India at this juncture on the eve of the general election is thoroughly inappropriate ill motivated and impacting and vitiating the democracy" said the lawyers union.  Referring to Goa Civil Code AILU said that Common Civil Code is not the panacea for discriminatory provisions in law against women.  "Under the Goa Civil Code if a Hindu wife fails to deliver a child before she is 25 or if she fails to deliver a son before she is 30 then the Hindu man can marry a second wife. Similarly if a Hindu woman commits adultery then it is a ground for divorce. But if a Hindu man does so it is not a ground for divorce for the woman" it added.   The AILU views released by General Secretary P.V. Surendranath said that the regime is not prepared to bring legislation to give reservation to women for representation in legislative Assemblies and Parliament and to do gender justice to them and society and develop our democracy empowering women.  "Homogenization of various cultural practices is not secularism. It is counterproductive to secularism and integration of the nation" it stated.  On June 14 the 22nd Law Commission headed by former Karnataka HCs Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi had solicited the views and ideas of the public and recognised religious organisations to examine the UCC.  In response AILU appealed to the Law Commission to "withdraw" from the present exercise to deliberate afresh over UCC.  Earlier the 21st Law Commission of India had opined against the proposal of UCC and dealt with family laws of various religions that are discriminatory. It had also submitted its consultation paper on Reform of Family Law on August 31 2018.  "The government has not taken follow up action based on the 21st Law Commission Consultation Paper on Reform of Family Law initiating debate to develop consensus" AILU alleged.  —IANS
