New Delhi (The Hawk): Customs officers detained a Kyrgyz national at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday for allegedly attempting to smuggle in 7.5 kg gold worth Rs 3.5 crore.
According to a senior Customs official, the woman landed at IGI Airport from Kyrgyzstan on Thursday.
"She attempted to sneak in four gold bars by hiding them in ingeniously created pockets in the body shaper she was wearing," the officer added. "She failed to show required paperwork for the seized gold."
He further stated that the accused did not declare the 7.5 kg gold bars before the officials at the Red Channel with the purposeful intent to clear the disputed goods clandestinely.
"As a result, the stated recovered commodities were confiscated under Section 110 of the Customs Act, and we have filed a case of gold smuggling in this regard," the officer explained.
The woman was brought before a local court, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days.

New Delhi: Doctors at a private hospital here successfully conducted a challenging auto liver transplant on a 35-year-old female patient from Kyrgyzstan, whose liver was damaged due to a rare parasitic infection.

About 75 per cent of her liver was damaged, and doctors at Fortis Escorts, Okhla, replaced the patient's damaged liver portion with a healthy part of her own liver in a surgery that lasted for eight hours.

This is the second case of auto liver transplant performed in India, and the first in the north, the hospital said in a statement on Wednesday.

The patient was suffering from abdominal pain for the past three months. She was diagnosed with a parasitic infection, called Echinococcosis Multilocularis which affects the liver as a slow-growing tumour with subsequent damage to the organ.

A CT scan was done which confirmed the presence of the infection and showed acute liver failure. In view of the extensive damage caused to the liver and the surrounding organs, the doctors decided to conduct an auto liver transplant.

"During the surgery, we removed the damaged part of the liver and successfully replaced it with a normal part of the liver. Postoperatively, the patient had a fast recovery and was discharged on the eighth day of surgery in a stable condition without any immunosuppressant medicines, which is usually required after organ transplantation," Vivek Vij, Chairman - Liver Transplant, Fortis Escorts, said in the statement.

"The dissection for removal of the diseased liver part was quite challenging, as there was a risk of injury to other vital surrounding organs along with risk of bleeding, he said.

Echinococcosis Multilocularis is a rare health condition and has about 10 per cent chances of reoccurrence. If not treated on time and correctly, the infection might affect the lungs, kidney, large blood vessels, and intestines of the patient.

In the majority of the reported cases for Echinococcosis Multilocularis, liver transplant is adopted to cure the patient.

"However, in this particular case, we opted for a novel technique - auto liver transplant, where the damaged part of the liver was removed and replaced by a healthy part of the liver. Utilising a part of the patient's own liver is a boon as immunosuppressive medicines are not required," Vij said. IANS

New Delhi: The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has approved proposals by Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia for training in Kyrgystan and Hungary as they prepare for the upcoming trials for the Asian Games in Hangzhou.  The duo, who along with fellow Olympian Sakshi Malik, was leading a protest by wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh till a few days back, sent in their proposals to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) TOPS team and the same was cleared within 24 hrs of their request.  While Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia will head out to Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan for 36 days training camp, World Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat will first head out to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan for a week-long training camp and then to Tata, Hungary for 18 days of training, the ministry informed in a release on Thursday.   While Vinesh will be accompanied by physiotherapist Ashwini Jeevan Patil, sparring partner Sangeeta Phogat and coach Sudesh, Bajrang will be accompanied by coach Sujeet Maan, physiotherapist Anuj Gupta, sparring partner Jitender and strength and conditioning expert Kaazi Hasan.  The government will fund Vinesh, Bajrang, their sparring partners, Sangeeta Phogat and Jitender,  and coaches Sudesh and Sujeet Maan's air tickets, board and lodging costs, camp expenses, airport transfer costs, OPA and other miscellaneous costs.  Additionally, the cost for the other support staff accompanying the wrestlers will be borne by Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ).  Both Vinesh and Bajrang are set to leave in the first week of July.  —IANS
