Hyderabad: The city of Hyderabad, India, has 5.50 lakh stray dogs, according to government figures released on Wednesday, a day after CCTV footage of a 4-year-old kid being mauled to death by a pack of dogs went viral.
As the horrific visuals triggered public outrage, municipal authorities on Wednesday decided to take steps on war footing to check the menace of stray dogs.
Arvind Kumar, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's Special Chief Secretary for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, has ordered that the problem of stray dogs be dealt with urgently (GHMC).
He convened a meeting of GHMC zonal Commissioners and veterinary officers and ordered them to immediately begin developing a plan of action to combat the outbreak inside the boundaries of GHMC and other towns in the state.
Officials from the GHMC informed him that there are currently 5.50 lakh stray dogs in the GHMC region. They said that in 2011, their population was 8,50,000; however, due to sterilising efforts, that number has decreased.
The GHMC officers were given orders to quickly begin the ABC (Animal Birth Control) sterilising operations from Arvind Kumar.
The GHMC has ordered the local government to prevent garbage from being dumped on the streets by local hotels, restaurants, banquet halls, and poultry and mutton markets. Taking quick action to prevent this dumping of waste was mandated because of the potential rise in the number of stray canines in the city.
Students at both public and private schools in the city, he recommended, should be included in the awareness programmes. It was mandated that officials make brochures and billboards to raise public consciousness.
Slum Development Federations, Town Development Federations, and Resident Colony Welfare Associations were urged to assist local authorities in enforcing order in squalid areas around the city and its surrounding towns. The state's other towns will enlist the aid of self-help groups to implement similar control measures.
For the registration of pets in the city and its neighbouring municipalities, Arvind Kumar suggested the development of a separate smartphone app. Once registered, the appropriate owners will be issued identification cards. He said steps should be taken to file complaints through My GHMC App No. 040-21111111.
He recommended figuring out where the majority of reports are coming from so that measures might be done there right away. Authorities have been told to dispatch veterinary teams to the affected locations, where they can take the necessary steps to stop the spread, with particular focus on those places without convenient access to transportation.
It was reported on Sunday that a young boy, aged four, was killed by a pack of strays in the Bagh Amberpet neighbourhood of Hyderabad. Public outcry was sparked on Tuesday when CCTV footage of the tragic incident was released.
Pradeep, the youngster, passed away before his father could take him to a hospital.
The boy's father, Gangadhar, was working as a watchman at an auto service centre when the tragic event unfolded.
In less than a year, this is the second such occurrence to occur in Hyderabad. A young boy of two years old was killed by stray dogs in the Bada Bazar neighbourhood of Golconda in April 2022.—Inputs from Agencies

Hyderabad: A woman sanitation worker died while sweeping the road in Hyderabad after she was hit by a private bus on Monday.  The incident occurred in Ramkote area in the heart of the city. The victim was identified as D. Sunita (35), the worker of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).  According to the GHMC officials, Sunita was sweeping the road when the bus belonging to Ayan Institute of Medical Sciences hit her. She sustained critical injuries and succumbed while being shifted to the government-run Osmania General Hospital.
The accident occurred around 7.30 a.m. CCTV visuals show the woman sweeping the footpath when a speeding bus hits her and comes to a halt after ramming into a tree.  A GHMC official said negligence and rash driving by the bus driver led to the accident. On a complaint by GHMC officials, police registered a case and took up investigation.  The officials assured financial assistance to the deceased’s family and employment to a family member.

Hyderabad: Heavy rain that lashed Hyderabad and suburbs early Tuesday left several colonies inundated, paralysed normal life and threw the vehicular traffic out of gear.
Low-lying residential areas and those close to lakes and stormwater drains were inundated with roads turning into cesspools.
Overflowing water bodies and drains led to submergence of colonies. Flood water entered the houses in some areas, damaging household articles and causing severe hardships to people.&nbsp;
Authorities declared a holiday for all educational institutions following the heavy rain and in view of the forecast of more showers later in the day.
Roads in several areas were submerged due to massive downpour, badly affecting the movement of vehicles in usually busy areas. People going to offices and workplaces were caught in traffic jams.
Massive inundation at Shaikpet led to long traffic jams on the flyover and the road connecting Toli Chowki to IT hubs HITEC City and Gachibowli. Similar scenes were witnessed on Kukatpally-Moosapet and Erragadda-Moosapet roads.
Cyberabad Police asked the IT employees to opt from work to home. It urged the citizens to take all precautions in view of the forecast of heavy rains.
There was huge stagnation under Moosapet Metro Station while water from overflowing Kukatpally nala inundated the main road.
The movement of vehicles was badly hit on Punjagutta-Kukatpally road, one of the busiest traffic routes in the city. Traffic between Ameerpet and Begumpet also came to a halt.
Authorities deployed JCBs to rescue students stranded in hostels of various engineering colleges in Maisammaguda area. Hostel buildings of Mallareddy,St Peters and Narasimha Reddy colleges were submerged by the flood water.
Colonies in areas like Chintal, Uppal, Begumpet, Toli Chowki, Kukatpally, Bowenpally and Gandlapochamapally were inundated. Water from Fox Sagar submerged the roads in Srinivas Nagar in Chintal.
Residents complained that water entered their houses around 3 a.m., damaging household items. They blamed the negligence by the municipal authorities and local public representatives. A woman said politicians have no right to seek their votes in the coming elections without addressing the persistent problem of waterlogging.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has sounded an alert. It appealed to people not to step out of their homes unless essential.
Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams were clearing water stagnation and fallen trees in various parts of the city.
GHMC commissioner said that the staff are on high alert due to incessant rainfall in the city. They were clearing stagnant areas and monitoring the nala flows.
Greater Hyderabad Mayor Vijayalaxmi Gadwal inspected the water logging near Balkampet Bridge. She instructed Zonal Commissioner and DRF teams to clear the water stagnation immediately. She requested citizens to travel only in emergencies and to take utmost care while travelling.
Picket nala was overflowing in Begumpet inundating roads and residential areas. The Allamtota Bai area was submerged. Begumpet-Balkampet underpass was completely inundated.
The city received 10-14 centimeter rainfall since early morning. Miyapur received the highest rainfall of 14. The rainfall in Kukatpally was 12.73 cm while it was 11.98 in Rajendranagar, 11.9 in Shaikpet and 11.68 in Khairatabad.
Meanwhile, state minister T. Srinivas Yadav directed GHMC officials to be on alert to minimize inconvenience to people. People may contact GHMC control room at 21111111, 23225397 for any emergency.
The minister asked officials to closely monitor the water level in Hussain Sagar lake and Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs and also the flow in stormwater drains.&nbsp;

Heavy rain brings Hyderabad to its knees

Hyderabad: Municipal authorities in Hyderabad have sealed a hotel due to severe food safety and hygiene concerns.
The Food Safety Wing of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sealed Alpha Hotel in Secunderabad after it found that the management failed to take corrective measures to maintain hygienic conditions in the hotel.
The follow-up inspection was conducted on Sunday, two days after the first inspection following a complaint by a customer.
The officials during the first inspection had found significant irregularities in the hotel’s adherence to safety standards. They had collected food samples on suspicion of violation of provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and sent the same to the state food laboratory.
The officials had issued a notice to the hotel management asking it to close the premises and rectify the identified issues. However, during the follow-up inspection the officials found that the management has not taken required steps to improve hygienic conditions.
The Food Security Wing officials said that the management had failed to address the food safety concerns adequately. Following their report, GHMC decided to seal the hotel. The municipal body wrote to the district administration for further actions against the hotel’s management.
Earlier, the police had booked the management of the popular hotel after a customer complained that he fell ill after having breakfast at the hotel on September 15.
Mohammed Zameeruddin had complained to Monda Market police station that he along with his friends had ordered Mutton Kheema Roti. One of them Mahmood suddenly started vomiting. The complainant alleged that an unpleasant odor was emanating from the dish.
The police had registered a case under Sections 273 and 336 of the Indian Penal Code.
