Panaji (The Hawk): Here at the International Film Festival of India, the Kannada film "Nanu Kusuma," which depicts the reality of how women are discriminated against despite strict laws, has been screened.
Director Krishnegowda stated that "Nanu Kusuma" reflects the truth of our patriarchal culture, where injustice is meted out to women despite having strict laws, in an interview with the media on Tuesday's "Table Talk" programme.
The short story, which Dr. Besagarahalli Ramanna, a Kannada author, based the movie on, was inspired by a true story. "The main themes of this movie are women's protection and empowerment. My preference is to make films about issues that could impart a message to society, "said Krishnegowda.
The tale of Kusuma, a loving and kind-hearted father who has high expectations for his daughter, is told in Nanu Kusuma. Her life becomes chaotic when her father dies in an accident, but fate had other intentions. Due to a financial difficulty, Kusuma, who desired to be a doctor, withdraws from medical school. She receives her father's government position as payment. But when Kusuma is sexually raped, her life takes a radical turn.
Actress Greeshma Sridhar talked about how difficult it was to portray Kusuma and how stressful it was to stay in that mindset all the time.
Greeshma Sridhar stated, "It is the story of women who are continuously being forced into corners and who find themselves surrounded by troubles without doing any wrong."
She said that it is heartbreaking to admit that there is no shortage of information on this particular issue, which made it much harder to accept.
The film was shown as part of the Indian Panorama Feature Films category.
