Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, who has got a clean chit in last year's drugs-on-cruise case, had told the Narcotics Control Bureau that he started consuming 'ganja' during his graduation days in the US as he was having a sleeping disorder, as per a chargesheet filed by the agency. The NCB on Friday filed a charge-sheet in a Mumbai court against 14 out of 20 people, who were arrested in the case last October following a raid on a cruise ship and alleged seizure of drugs. Six of them, including Aryan Khan, were not named due to lack of evidence, the central agency said.In one of his statements before the NCB, Aryan Khan admitted that he started smoking ganja in the US in 2018 when he was doing graduation there, as per the chargesheet. During that time, he was having "some sleeping disorders and he read over a few internet articles that ganja smoking can help in this regard," he told the agency.In another statement, Aryan Khan admitted that the incriminating WhatsApp drug chat found in his mobile phone was done by him, the NCB said.He also told the agency that he knows a dealer in Bandra (area of Mumbai), but does not know his name or exact location as primarily he (the dealer) is known to his friend Aachit, a co-accused in the case, said the charge-sheet.The NCB, while giving a clean chit to Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case, had said there was no recovery of drugs from him or any concrete evidence to prove that he conspired with the other accused.During the analysis of voluntary statements of Aryan Khan and Arbaaz A Merchant, a co-accused, it came to light that Merchant in none of his statements claimed that the six gm charas recovered from his possession was meant for consumption by Aryan Khan, the charge-sheet said.It further stated that Aryan Khan, in his voluntary statements, also never accepted that the recovered charas was to be consumed by him."In fact, Arbaaz in his statement of October 6, 2021, stated that he was warned by Aryan Khan not to carry any narcotic drug on the cruise," the NCB said.Also, Aryan Khan's mobile phone was not formally seized and none of the chats recovered from his phone connect him to the present case, it said."No recovery of drugs from Aryan Khan and non-availability of any concrete evidence which could prove role of Aryan Khan or his conspiracy with Arbaaz A Merchant or any other accused in the instant case beyond reasonable doubt, surfaced during the investigation carried so far. Hence, no complaint is being filed against him in the instant case," the charge-sheet said.But, the charge-sheet mentioned that in one his statements before the probe agency, Aryan Khan accepted that he had consumed Marijuana when he was in Los Angeles, US, on an experimental basis for recreational purpose.He had also accepted his WhatsApp chats with another accused Aachit for drug procurement.Aryan Khan stated that they talked about buying "Dokha", a word used for weed, the charge-sheet said.Further, in a statement, Aryan Khan admitted to his chat conversation with actress Ananya Pandey regarding weed procurement and said those messages were sent through the i-message feature of the iphone, the charge-sheet claimed.Accordingly, a voluntary statement Pandey was recorded. When she was shown the drug chats held in 2019, she acknowledged the chats by putting her signatures and said the chats related to weed were made "in jest and it was a joke in an attempt to be funny," the charge-sheet said."She told that all the chats held with Aryan were an extension of the same joke as mentioned earlier. Ananya Pandey told that Aryan is lying and she is completely unaware why Aryan said something like this," the charge-sheet claimed.Based on the disclosure made by Aryan Khan, a follow-up action against Ananya Pandey was carried out on October 21 last year. Upon search of her house, no illicit contraband was found, however, some electronic gadgets were recovered and seized, the charge-sheet said.—PTI

Koppal, (Karnataka): A person was killed after a tempo ran over a group of pilgrims sleeping on the premises of famous Huligemma temple in Hulagi village of the district, police said on Tuesday.Four people, including three women, were also injured in the incident.The tempo driver -- identified as Srinivas of Yarangaligi village in Ballary district -- has been arrested. His vehicle has also been seized. Captured on CCTV camera, the horrifying incident of Monday night has gone viral on the social media raising concerns about the safety of thousands of devotees who visit the Huligemma temple.The deceased has been identified as 75-year-old Tippanna, a resident of Nandihalli village near Karatagi town in Koppal district.Mallamma from Ballary, Hanumavva Jogathi from Kukanur and Tukaram from Karatagi town suffered injuries in the incident and all of them have been shifted to the District Hospital in Koppal.According to police, the accused who was driving tempo in an inebriated state could not control the vehicle and ran over devotees sleeping on the road in front of a shop on the temple premises.CCTV footage has shown that even after running over the driver did not stop the vehicle. Munirabad police, who are investigating the case, stated that in an inebriated state, the driver had pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, which had led to tragedy.Devotees and public have condemned the management of the temple for not arranging shelter for devotees who come from all districts of north Karnataka and Maharashtra. During festival days and No Moon days (Amavasya) thousands of devotees visit the temple and most of them sleep on roads.Further investigation is on. —IANS

New Delhi: A speeding truck ran over six persons sleeping on a divider in Delhi's Seemapuri area, killing four of them, a senior police official said on Wednesday. The official said the accident occurred at 1.51 a.m. "We got a call that a truck while crossing the DTC Depot redlight and going towards the DLF T-Point, ran over several people who were sleeping on the divider. The driver was speeding the truck in a negligent manner," the official said. The driver however, managed to escape. After receiving the call, a team was immediately sent to the crime scene, the official said, adding that four out of the six perosn were immediately taken to the GTB Hospital. While two died on the spot, one was declared brought dead at the hospital and the fourth succumbed to his injuries during treatment, the police said. The victims were identified as Kareem (52), Chotte Khan (25), Shah Alam (38) and Rahul (45), all residents of Seemapuri. The injured were identified as Manish and Pradeep. "We have formed several teams to trace the vehicle involved. A case has been registered," the police official added.

New Delhi (The Hawk): The police announced on Monday that they had detained three members of the renowned "Zeher Khurani" gang, who were known for targeting and robbing people after giving them candy that had been combined with sleeping pills.
Three people have been named as suspects: Gourav alias Haddi, a resident of Dayalpur, Kamal Singh alias Langda, a resident of Usmanpur, and Pawan alias Tedha.
According to Sagar Singh Kalsi, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), on October 23, Chnagi Dutt Mishra, 43, approached the Gulabi Bagh police station while driving a rickshaw.
"He told police that he was carrying 23 ceiling fans and some copper wires on his rickshaw and was travelling to Najafgarh through Gulabi Bagh when he started to feel dizzy and lost consciousness," stated the DCP.
The police said, "A case under pertinent sections of the Indian Penal Code and inquiry was set up. The suspects took a rickshaw along with the ceiling fans."
The CCTV footage of the route was examined throughout the investigation, and on October 24, it was discovered that one man was pulling the complainant's rickshaw and two men were following him on a scooter.
"The owner of the scooter, known as Kamal, was seized during a raid and upon questioning, he confessed to the crime. On his instance, Pawan was also apprehended. Then, at Pawan's instance, Gourav was also arrested on November 2," he said.
"During questioning, the defendants admitted that they had targeted the complainant after seeing him driving a rickshaw with expensive cargo close to the Pul Bangash region," the prosecutor continued.
The police officer claimed, "They immediately bought a pack of ladoos (sweets) from the local sweet store and combined powder of sleeplessness tablets (N-10/Valium) in one of the ladoos preserved in the packet. They started distributing ladoos and even provided a ladoo with the tablet to the victim.
The DCP continued, "They then began to pursue the victim and when the rickshaw puller reached near Zakhira Underpass, Inderlok area, he felt dizzy, at which point Gaurav got out of the scooty, pretending to assist him. They then dropped the rickshaw near a shop and drove the rickshaw towards Roop Nagar side with his associates.
The DCP added that Raju, a resident of Seelampur, was absconding. "The accused men further stated that they sold the stolen goods to Raju, a resident of Seelampur, for Rs 45,000 and used the funds for their fun and frolic during Deepawali," the DCP said.

Boston: According to a recent study, those who were exposed to even moderate levels of aircraft noise had a higher risk of not getting the minimum amount of sleep recommended each night. This risk was also higher for those who lived in the Western United States, close to a significant cargo airport, close to a sizable body of water, and for those without hearing loss. The Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and Oregon State University have conducted a new analysis, which adds to a growing body of research on the harmful health effects of environmental noise, and found that exposure to even moderate levels of aeroplane noise may disturb sleep. Major airline officials predict another record summer air travel season. Findings of the study that was published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, those who were exposed to aeroplane noise at levels as low as 45 dB had a higher likelihood of sleeping less than 7 hours every night. For reference, a whisper is 30 decibels (dB), a library is 40 dB, and an average home discussion is 50 dB. Sleep is essential to overall health and well-being, including daily physical and mental functioning, and a lack of adequate sleep can lead to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other health conditions. Health experts state that most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night for healthy functioning. This study is the first large-scale analysis of aircraft noise and sleep duration that accounts for the disruptive effects of multiple environmental exposures in communities, such as greenery and light at night (LAN). Despite how common exposure to noise from aircraft is for many people, little is known about the health effects of aircraft noise, particularly in the U.S., according to study lead author Matthew Bozigar, assistant professor of epidemiology at OSU, and study senior author Junenette Peters, associate professor of environmental health at BUSPH. "This study helps us understand the potential health pathways by which aircraft noise may act, such as through disrupted sleep," Peters says. For the study, Dr. Peters, Dr. Bozigar and colleagues from BUSPH, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health examined airplane noise exposure and self-reported sleep disturbance among more than 35,000 participants living around 90 of the major US airports. The participants were selected from the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), an ongoing, prospective study of US female nurses who have completed biennial questionnaires since 1976. The team examined aircraft noise levels every five years from 1995 to 2015, focusing on two measurements: a nighttime estimate (Lnight) that captures airplane noise occurring when people sleep, and a day-night estimate (DNL) that captures the average noise level over a 24-hour period and applies a 10 dB adjustment for aircraft noise occurring at night, when background noise is low. The DNL is also the primary metric that the FAA uses for aircraft noise policies, and the threshold for significant noise impacts is above DNL 65 dB. The team linked these measures at multiple thresholds with the nurses' geocoded residential addresses. After accounting for a range of factors, including demographics, health behaviors, comorbidities, and environmental exposures such as greenery and light at night (LAN), the results showed that the odds of sleeping less than seven hours rose as airplane noise exposure increased. Short sleep duration was also more likely among nurses who lived on the West Coast, near a major cargo airport or a large body of water, as well as among nurses who reported no hearing loss. "We found surprisingly strong relationships for particular subgroups that we are still trying to understand," Bozigar says. "For instance, there was a relatively strong signal between aircraft noise and both dimensions of disrupted sleep, short sleep duration and poor sleep quality, near major cargo airports. There is likely more going on to this story, as cargo operations tend to use larger, older, heavily laden, and therefore noisier aircraft that often fly through the nighttime hours. And the quantity of cargo shipped by air has been steadily increasing over the last couple of decades, possibly linked to more e-commerce. If the trends continue, it could mean more aircraft noise impacts to more groups of people." While the results suggested a clear link between airplane noise and sleep duration, the researchers observed no consistent association between aircraft noise and quality of sleep. "Though we cannot recommend policy changes from the results from a single study, our study around 90 U.S. airports did reveal a connection between aircraft noise and getting less than the recommended amount of sleep," says Dr. Bozigar. "Current gaps in knowledge could be filled in the future by including additional demographic groups--such as children, men, minority groups--and more detailed metrics of aircraft noise rather than a nightly or 24-hour average in studies. There are also more detailed ways of measuring sleep than from self-reports, such as wearable activity monitors, like a Fitbit, that researchers are incorporating more frequently in studies. And we still need to design studies that include other common sources of transportation noise, such as from cars and trains, to determine the impact of each type on health." —ANI

Washington: While it is well known that sleep is important for memory consolidation, scientists are still attempting to figure out how this process occurs in the brain overnight. New research led by scientists at UCLA Health and Tel Aviv University provides the first physiological evidence from inside the human brain supporting the dominant scientific theory on how the brain consolidates memory during sleep. Further, the researchers found that targeted deep-brain stimulation during a critical time in the sleep cycle appeared to improve memory consolidation. The research, published June 1 in Nature Neuroscience, could offer new clues for how deep-brain stimulation during sleep could one day help patients with memory disorders like Alzheimer's disease, said study co-author Itzhak Fried, MD, PhD. This was achieved by a novel "closed-loop" system that delivered electrical pulses in one brain region precisely synchronized to brain activity recorded from another region. According to the dominant theory for how the brain converts new information into long-term memories during shuteye, there's an overnight dialogue between the hippocampus - the brain's memory hub - and the cerebral cortex, which is associated with higher brain functions like reasoning and planning. This occurs during a phase of deep sleep, when brain waves are especially slow and neurons across brain regions alternate between rapidly firing in sync and silence. "This provides the first major evidence down to the level of single neurons that there is indeed this mechanism of interaction between the memory hub and the entire cortex," said Fried, the director of epilepsy surgery at UCLA Health and professor of neurosurgery, psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "It has both scientific value in terms of understanding how memory works in humans and using that knowledge to really boost memory." The researchers had a unique opportunity to test this theory of memory consolidation via electrodes in the brains of 18 epilepsy patients at UCLA Health. The electrodes had been implanted in the patients' brains to help identify the source of their seizures during hospital stays typically lasting around 10 days. The study was conducted across two nights and mornings. Just before bedtime, study participants were shown photo pairings of animals and 25 celebrities, including easily identifiable stars like Marilyn Monroe and Jack Nicholson. They were immediately tested on their ability to recall which celebrity was paired with which animal, and they were tested again in the morning after a night of undisturbed sleep. On another night, they were shown 25 new animal and celebrity pairings before bedtime. This time, they received targeted electrical stimulation overnight, and their ability recall the pairings was tested in the morning. To deliver this electrical stimulation, the researchers had created a real-time closed-loop system that Fried likened to a musical conductor: The system "listened" to brain's electrical signals, and when patients fell into the period of deep sleep associated with memory consolidation, it delivered gentle electrical pulses instructing the rapidly firing neurons to "play" in sync. Each individual tested performed better on memory tests following a night of sleep with the electrical stimulation compared to a night of undisturbed sleep. Bengaluru: An incident of a homemaker ending her life allegedly due to harassment by police has come to light in the limits of Channapatna town police station in Ramanagara district on Monday.  The deceased woman is identified as 31-year-old Madhuri, a resident of Kote Layout in Channapatna city. Madhuri consumed sleeping pills on Saturday and succumbed at the hospital on Sunday. She had stated in the video that she is not able to take torture and harassment by the police she is ending her life.  It is alleged that when Madhuri went to file a complaint to the Channapatna Rural police station regarding a financial dispute, the cops had not lodged her complaint. The victim had alleged that the cops insulted her at the police station.  She was allegedly sent back by the police and cops told her that the victim has many cheating cases against her. The woman had stated in her video before committing suicide that at least after her death she will get justice. The relatives and family members have met Ramanagara SP in this regard.  The family have made allegations against Channapatna Town Inspector Shobha and other staff. The police department is yet to make an official statement regarding the case.
