Lisbon : The Portuguese Directorate-General for Health has confirmed the first monkeypox case in a woman. The country had reported 473 monkeypox cases, all male patients, reports Xinhua news agency.The majority of the cases were reported in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, according to health authorities .Monkeypox is common in wild animals like rodents and primates, and humans can also get infected with the virus .Symptoms include skin rashes, fever, headache, muscle ache, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion.The rash eventually forms a scab, which later falls off, indicating that the person is no longer infectious.&nbsp; &nbsp;-- IANS

Lisbon:&nbsp;Portugal started the vaccination for those who had contact with the confirmed cases of the Monkeypox virus, said the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health (DGS).The Portuguese Health authority on Thursday had confirmed a total of 588 cases of Monkeypox in the country as of Thursday since the first case reported on May 3, with 73 detected last week, Xinhua news agency reported.Eligible contacts in different regions of Portugal continue to be identified and given vaccination, the DGS added.The most common symptoms of the disease are fever, severe headache, muscle pain, back pain, tiredness, and enlarged lymph nodes with the progressive appearance of rashes that affect the skin and mucous membranes. —IANS

Lisbon: A total of 119 suspects have been arrested for arson as serious fires have hit Portugal due to a heat wave and severe drought, causing consequences for agriculture and other primary supply systems.
"We have this year a detention rate that is already much more than double that of the previous years" as a result of inspection work carried out jointly by the military police, the National Republican Guard, and the Judiciary Police, Xinhua news agency quoted Minister of Internal Administration Jose Luis Carneiro as saying on Sunday.
Carneiro revealed that "other investigations are underway to detect the causes of other fires, which could lead to other arrests".
This year, the government strengthened "the inspection and surveillance mechanisms", in conjunction with the Air Force, in addition to installing 230 fixed lookout posts and video surveillance, the minister added.
Carneiro expressed "unconditional" solidarity with the firefighters who fight the fires.
According to the Portuguese law, forests are not allowed to be used for construction or other usage.

Ronaldo's contract at Manchester United expired this week, and he was hoping to impress prospective new clubs. He missed two excellent opportunities in the first half before being fouled by Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu and being awarded a penalty.
After the ball found the back of the net, a beaming Ronaldo wheeled away, leaping and swivelling in the air as the fans cheered "SI-UUUU" in unison, before being surrounded by teammates.
Ronaldo became the first male player to score in five World Cups with his 65th-minute penalty kick as Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 on Thursday. He also gave Portugal a 1-0 lead over Ghana. In the 73rd minute, Andre Ayew equalised the score, giving Ghana's large crowd at the 974 Stadium something to celebrate. Five minutes later, Rafael Leao received a pass from Ronaldo after Joao Felix had restored Portugal's advantage, leaving Ghana speechless. Ronaldo then displayed class with a jinking run before passing to Rafael Leao.
Osman Bukari gave Ghana a late goal, but Portugal held on to win the opening match of the World Cup for the first time in their previous four appearances, courtesy to Osman Bukari's headed comeback in the 89th minute.
He has now scored in every competition since scoring his first World Cup goal in 2006 against Iran in the group stage by converting a penalty. Ronaldo scored one goal at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, another at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and four goals at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Additionally, Ronaldo increased his total to 118 goals for men's international play.
Earlier, despite Cristiano Ronaldo having the ball in the net and missing two early chances, Portugal dominated Ghana but were unable to break through. Ronaldo might have scored twice in the opening 15 minutes, but he missed both of his chances. He scored from close range in the 31st minute after the referee blew his whistle for an offence against him.
With superbly timed through-balls that led to the team's second and third goals, Bruno Fernandes was instrumental in Portugal's triumph. However, Portugal's players almost lost it in the closing minutes as they lost control of the situation. This includes the humorous scene of Bukari imitating Ronaldo's "SI-UUU" celebration after scoring. On Monday, when Ghana plays South Korea, Portugal, who is now leading the group with three points, will play Uruguay.

Lisbon/Espinho: Portuguese voters headed to the polls on Sunday, facing a choice between switching to a centre-right government or keeping the centre-left in power, although neither appears to have a clear path to a full majority.
The far-right Chega party has been growing in clout and could play a role in post-election talks.  The issues dominating the campaign in western Europe's poorest country include a crippling housing crisis, low wages, sagging healthcare and corruption, seen by many as endemic to the mainstream parties.  Polling stations opened at 8 am (0800 GMT) and close at 7 pm in mainland Portugal and an hour later on the Azores archipelago. Results are expected around midnight.  The early election, four months after Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa's sudden resignation amid a graft investigation, again pits against each other the two centrist parties - the Socialist Party (PS) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) - that have alternated in power since the end of a fascist dictatorship five decades ago.
"I hope life gets better than what it is now," 86-year-old Diamantino Vieira told Reuters as he waited to vote at a polling station in the northern city of Espinho, where Luis Montenegro, who is at the helm of the Democratic Alliance (AD) of right-leaning parties, will also cast his ballot.  The AD, which compromises Montenegro's PSD and two smaller conservative parties, leads in most opinion polls but it could struggle to govern without Chega's supporting votes. Montenegro has so far ruled out any deals with the radical populists, who want a government role.  The ruling PS, now led by Pedro Nuno Santos after Costa's resignation, could attempt a replay of their old alliances with the Left Bloc and the Communists that allowed them to govern between 2015 and 2019, if the combined left gets more than 115 seats in the 230-seat parliament.  Surveys suggest support for Chega's anti-establishment message, its vows to sweep away corruption and hostility to what it sees as "excessive" immigration, has roughly doubled since the last election in 2022, though it remains in third place.  On Friday, conservative President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told Expresso newspaper he would do everything he can to prevent Chega from gaining power, drawing criticism as the head of state is mandated to remain neutral.  Political scientist Antonio Costa Pinto of Lisbon University said Portugal "has entered the dynamic of many European democracies", in which the centre-right is challenged by having a radical party to its right consolidated in third place.  A potential AD minority government, even supported by the smaller centre-right Liberal Initiative, would likely need votes from Chega to pass legislation, making it relatively fragile as Chega could topple it at any point.  "However, a PS victory with an absolute right-wing majority in parliament would be the most complex, most unstable scenario," Costa Pinto added.  More than 10 million citizens are eligible to vote.
