New Delhi: Days after his shows at a Gurugram bar were called off following threats by right-wing organisations, stand-up comic Kunal Kamra on Sunday wrote an open letter to the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), challenging it to condemn Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.
The comedian, who has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government over a number of issues in the past, proclaimed himself as 'a bigger Hindu' than the VHP as he doesn't earn his living by fear mongering and issuing threats.
'I chant 'Jai Shri Sita-Ram' and 'Jai Radha Krishna' loudly and with pride. If you really are the children of India, write and send (messages of) 'Godse Murdabad'. If you don't, you will be perceived as anti-Hindu and supporters of terrorism.
'Don't tell me you consider Godse as God? If that is true, keep getting my shows cancelled in the future too. I'll just be happy to have emerged a bigger Hindu than you in this test. Whatever I'll do, I'll eat my hard-earned bread as I'm a bigger Hindu than you. I feel it is a sin to live on scraps by threatening someone and spreading fear,' Kamra wrote in Hindi, tagging the official Twitter handle of the VHP.
He was scheduled to perform on September 17 and 18 at Studio Xo Bar in Sector 29 of Gurugram, Haryana.
The VHP and Bajrang Dal on Friday had submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav through Tehsildar demanding cancellation of the show, saying Kamra 'makes fun of Hindu gods and goddesses in his show, which is quite wrong'.
In his letter, Kamra also demanded the right-wing bodies to produce evidence suggesting he mocks Hindu gods and goddesses in his stand-up sketches.
"If there is any such clip, show it to me too. I only mock the government. If you are a government lackey, then your feelings getting hurt makes sense. How does the Hindu religion figure here?" he said.
The bar management had on Friday announced they were cancelling the show to avoid trouble.
Kamra, 33, also said he doesn't blame the club owner who had to cancel his shows. "You got my Gurgaon show cancelled by threatening the club's owner. Why should I blame him? After all, he has a business to run. How will he deal with goons? He can't go to the police. Even if he goes to the police, the police themselves will come to you with a request. Now, the whole system belongs to you," added Kamra.

Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who has been critical of the Uttar Pradesh government over the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf during police custody while being taken to a hospital for medical checkup in Prayagraj, on Friday compared the accused of the sensational killing with Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
The AIMIM MP questioned why the Uttar Pradesh Police did not invoke the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against the accused of killing of Ahmed brothers. Addressing a gathering here, Owaisi said, "People in police custody were killed. The people who killed them were terrorists and this is a terror module. They might kill more people. Why did they not invoke UAPA on those who killed them? Who gave automatic weapons to the killers? Who gave Rs 8 lakhs worth of weapons to them?
"They are radicalized and walking in the footsteps of Godse. They must be stopped else they will kill more people," he added.
The Judicial committee constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government visited Prayagraj on Thursday while the Special Investigation Team recreated the crime scene where gangsters Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on April 15 while being taken to a hospital for a medical checkup.
Three friends of Lovelesh Tiwari, the main accused in the sensational killing of gangster turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed, were detained by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Uttar Pradesh's Banda. "The trio were caught at Banda railway station," officials said.
The SIT team also reached Hamirpur and Kasganj to conduct the further probe.
Uttar Pradesh Police conducted raids in search of Shaista Parveen, wife of Atiq Ahmed, in Kaushambi on Wednesday. "Raids were conducted in search of Shaista Parveen, wife of gangster Atiq Ahmed. A search operation was conducted after receiving information about some criminals hiding. The operation lasted for about 2 hours. A drone camera was also used in operation. However, the operation did not prove successful today," Samar Bahadur, ASP, Kaushambi told ANI. Atiq Ahmed was accused in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal in 2005, as well as in the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the BSP leader's murder, in February this year.
As many as three people were arrested and identified as Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lovelesh Tiwari.
All three attackers were apprehended at the scene after they voluntarily turned themselves in. They have been kept in the custody of the police and questioned.
On Wednesday, a CJM court in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj remanded gangster Atiq Ahmed's killers to four-day police custody.
This comes after the Special Investigation Team filed an application in the court seeking remand for questioning for all three accused. The district court sent them to 14-day judicial custody on April 16.
During the police remand, the police will question the accused about the weapon they used to kill Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf on April 15 night, where did they get the weapon from and who gave it to them.&nbsp;

Dehradun: BJP leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat termed Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a 'patriot'.
He mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for 'merely' sharing the surname.
The BJP leader also targeted Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Speaking to reporters at the party's district headquarters in Ballia on Wednesday, Rawat said, "Gandhi ji was killed. That is a different issue. But as far as I have understood and read Godse, he too was a patriot. We do not agree with the killing of Gandhi ji."
Targeting the former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Rawat said that merely having the Gandhi surname did not make Rahul Gandhi's ideology Gandhian.
Rawat said that making a show of wearing the 'janeu', does not change Rahul Gandhi's identity.
"He just talks," Rawat claimed, accusing Rahul of cashing in on Gandhi's name.
Reacting to Rahul's statement in the US, Rawat said: "His efforts will not help the party and soon it (Congress) will be a thing of the past."
The former CM said: "Rahul is speaking out of frustration, seeing the deteriorating condition of his party. He is speaking in mental stress. The public will not accept a person going through mental stress."
On the SP President Akhilesh Yadav's meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the BJP leader said, "There is no bigger theatrical leader in this country than Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Akhilesh Yadav wants to learn theatrics from Kejriwal." Rawat said that Yadav had plunged Uttar Pradesh into 'goonda raj' during his term as chief minister. But as far as I have understood and read Godse, he too was a patriot. We do not agree with the killing of Gandhi ji,” the BJP leader told reporters in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia. Hitting out at the prime minister, Walia, at a press conference here, said Modi hails Mahatma Gandhi when he goes abroad but an ex-chief minister of his own party calls the father of the nation’s assassin a patriot. “The eulogising of Godse must stop and to give a message for this Rawat must be shown the door by the BJP,” said Walia, secretary in All India Congress Committee’s Communications Department. “If you (Modi) don’t remove him from the party then it means what he has said has tacit consent from you,” the Congress leader from Uttarakhand said. "If Nathuram Godse is a murderer of Gandhi then he is a good son of the country. He was born in India unlike Babar and Aurangzeb who were attackers of the country."  Slamming Singh, Kumar said, "The killer of our father of the nation can never be a good son of the country."  "Anybody calling Nathuram Godse a good son of India, is a blot on our country. New Delhi: Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Sunday condemned Union Guriraj Singh over his praise of Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse, saying that celebrating or glorifying the person who killed the Father of the Nation is nothing short of an "anti-national act". His remark was in response to the Union minister calling Godse a "sapoot" (son of the soil). Taking to his official Twitter handle, the Congress leader posted, "Mahatma Gandhi is the Father of the Nation. Celebrating his killer is an anti-national act. But if you're in the BJP, celebrating Godse is a badge of honour." He tweeted further that the recent remarks by Union Minister Giriraj Singh and former Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat only go to show the "mindset' of the party that they represent. "The PM's silence tells you he approves of their every word," tweeted Venugopal. Earlier, on Saturday, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal also came up with a scathing response to the Union minister's remark. "Was Godse a good son as Giriraj Singh put it? The RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological parent of the BJP) had offered help to the British rulers (during the freedom struggle). How can they acknowledge the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi? Bengaluru: In the controversy surrounding the removal of a Hanuman flag in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated on Tuesday that there are individuals in the state who have connections to Nathuram Godse, Mahatma Gandhis assassin and they are causing unrest.  Amid a protest by the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) in Mandya against the removal of the saffron flag from a 108 feet flagstaff in Keragodu village Siddaramaiah dismissed their agitation as a political maneuver. After paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary he spoke to reporters. Said, "There are people among us who worship Godse while also speaking about Mahatma Gandhi."  Addressing the tensions in Mandya, Siddaramaiah highlighted efforts to disrupt peace and attributed this disturbance to descendants of Godse. He emphasized the importance of fostering love and trust for harmony and urged against fueling communal passions by saying, "No one should attempt to incite communal passions."  Reiterating that Keragodu Panchayat had only granted permission for hoisting either the national tricolor or Karnataka flag—not any religious or political flags—Siddaramaiah questioned the organizers of the event. He alleged that they deviated from their submitted request for permission by hoisting the saffron flag with motives such as gaining political advantage and creating unrest, within society. The authorities later replaced the "Hanuman Dhwaja" with the flag.
