Washington: According to a recent study, a group of researchers found that the imbalance of energy on Earth is the most important indicator in order to determine the size and effects of climate change.The findings of the study were published in the first issue of Environmental Research: Climate, a new open access journal. Distinguished scholar at the National Center of Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and highly cited lead author Kevin Trenberth together with climate scientist and co-author Lijing Cheng have made a new complete inventory of all the various sources of excess heat on Earth. He studied energy changes from the atmosphere, ocean, land, and ice as climate system components from 2000 to 2019 and compared this to the radiation at the top of the Earth's atmosphere to find the imbalance."The net energy imbalance is calculated by looking at how much heat is absorbed from the Sun and how much is able to radiate back into space," explains Trenberth, who's paper was published today, "it is not yet possible to measure the imbalance directly, the only practical way to estimate it is through an inventory of the changes in energy."Understanding the net energy gain of the climate system from all origins, how much extra energy there is and where it is redistributed in the Earth system is vital to inform and thus address the climate crisis. Previously, the focus of climate research has been on the rise of the global mean surface temperature on Earth. However, this is just one outcome of the total energy imbalance faced on Earth.Excess energy affects weather systems, directly increasing the number or intensity of extreme weather events such as heavy rains and flooding, hurricanes, droughts, heat waves, and wildfires. Weather events move energy around and help the climate system to get rid of energy by radiating it into space, which also affects the rise in temperature globally. The study further revealed that 93% of extra heat from the imbalance ends up in the Earth's oceans, increasing their overall temperature and sea level which resulted in 2021 being the hottest global ocean recorded year to date."Modelling the Earth energy imbalance is challenging, and the relevant observations and their synthesis need improvements. Study Reveals How Earth's Energy Imbalance Is Essential To Prevent Global Warming

Washington: In order to mitigate biodiversity loss, researchers discovered that strengthening protection for areas already protected by law or local communities is as important for biodiversity conservation as creating new protected areas.
The study was published in the journal, 'Science Advances'.
The study led by Princeton University discovered that roughly 70 per cent of the roughly 5000 species examined have no apparent representation in protected areas, occur in protected areas that have been downgraded, downsized, or removed from protection, or are especially vulnerable to extinction due to future land-use change.
However, by strengthening protected areas and expanding park networks across just 1 per cent of the planet's land area, the essential habitats of 1191 animal species that are particularly vulnerable to extinction can be safeguarded.
"Parks save species. But they can do so only if the parks themselves are protected against harmful activities," said David Wilcove, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and public affairs at Princeton's Center for Policy Research on Energy and the Environment.
"Our study demonstrates just how important it is to protect the places that protect species," Wilcove said.
These findings of the new study come amid growing recognition of the need to conserve the planet's species diversity by creating new protected areas. At the United Nations biodiversity conference COP15 in December 2022, for example, countries agreed on a target to set aside 30 per cent of the planet's lands and seas as protected areas.
The latest research sheds light on another important aspect of wildlife conservation - ensuring that already protected areas continue to remain a safe space for biodiversity.
"Our study pinpoints where new parks can be created, but also where to restore and reinforce existing parks in order to boost wildlife conservation," said Yiwen Zeng, lead author of the study who completed the research as an associate research scholar at Princeton's Center for Policy Research on Energy and the Environment. "Many global discussions on conservation rightfully focus on the need to create new protected areas, but our study also shows the importance of ensuring that protected areas remain effective at keeping out harmful human activity," said Zeng, who is now a research assistant professor at the National University of Singapore's Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions. This is key as protected areas can be vulnerable to harmful human activities if there is insufficient enforcement or political backing for wildlife conservation.
Parks become less effective at protecting species when they experience such downgrading, downsizing or removal from protection, which occur when a government decides to roll back the legal protections governing a park, diminishing the degree or extent of protection afforded to it.
These changes could result in forest clearance for infrastructure expansion, mining or other activities, and translate to the loss or degradation of habitats.
As of 2021, over 278 million hectares of parks are known to have been cumulatively subject to these types of degradations, the researchers found.
For example, Megophrys damrei is a critically endangered frog found only in Cambodia and nowhere else. Even though its habitat is protected, the area continues to experience habitat degradation and loss within national park boundaries and in the adjacent surroundings.
Additionally, expanding the protected area network could benefit species whose habitats currently lack sufficient protection. For instance, the study found that protecting an additional 330 square kilometres of natural landscapes within Indonesia would safeguard the suitable habitats of 53 species that currently lack protected area coverage and have a limited habitat area. "There are many wonderful examples in the conservation of people fighting to protect species, but there is always a risk that when you take your eye off the ball, pressure builds and hard-won protection is lost," said Rebecca Senior, a former postdoctoral researcher at Princeton and now an assistant professor of ecology at Durham University in the UK. "Designating parks on paper is not enough; they need to be in the right places, with the right management, and they need to last," Senior said. —ANI

Protection Of Existing Parks Essential For Biodiversity Conservation: Study

Washington: It is hard and difficult to maintain over time to keep track of everything you consume in a day. Sadly, a recent study shows that diligent tracking is an essential element for effective weight loss. The findings of the study were published n Obesity finds that perfect tracking is not needed to achieve significant weight loss. Users of a commercial digital weight loss programme who self-reported their food intake were followed for six months by researchers from UConn, the University of Florida, and the University of Pennsylvania. The goal of the study was to determine the ideal diet tracking levels for predicting 3%, 5%, and 10% weight reduction after six months. "We partnered with WeightWatchers, who was planning on releasing a new Personal Points program, and they wanted to get empirical data via our clinical trial," says co-author and Department of Allied Health Sciences Professor Sherry Pagoto. Pagoto explains that the new program takes a personalized approach to assigning points including a list of zero-point foods to eliminate the need for calculating calories for everything, "Dietary tracking is a cornerstone of all weight loss interventions, and it tends to be the biggest predictor of outcomes. This program lowers the burden of that task by allowing zero-point foods, which do not need to be tracked." Researchers and developers are seeking ways to make the tracking process less burdensome, because as Pagoto says, for a lot of programs, users may feel like they need to count calories for the rest of their lives: "That's just not sustainable. Do users need to track everything every single day or not necessarily?" With six months of data, Assistant Professor in the Department of Allied Health Sciences Ran Xu was interested to see if there was a way to predict outcomes based on how much diet tracking participants did. Ran Xu and Allied Health Sciences Ph.D. student Richard Bannor analyzed the data to see if there were patterns associated with weight loss success from a data science perspective. Using a method called receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis they found how many days people need to track their food to reach clinically significant weight loss. "It turns out, you don't need to track 100% each day to be successful," says Xu. "Specifically in this trial, we find that people only need to track around 30% of the days to lose more than 3% weight and 40% of the days to lose more than 5% weight, or almost 70% of days to lose more than 10% weight. The key point here is that you don't need to track every day to lose a clinically significant amount of weight." This is promising since Pagoto points out that the goal for a six-month weight loss program is typically 5% to 10%, a range where health benefits have been seen in clinical trials. "A lot of times people feel like they need to lose 50 pounds to get healthier, but actually we start to see changes in things like blood pressure, lipids, cardiovascular disease risk, and diabetes risk when people lose about 5-to-10% of their weight," says Pagoto. "That can be accomplished if participants lose about one to two pounds a week, which is considered a healthy pace of weight loss." Xu then looked at trajectories of diet tracking over the six months of the program. The researchers found three distinct trajectories. One they call high trackers, or super users, who tracked food on most days of the week throughout six months, and on average lost around 10% of their weight. However, many participants belonged to a second group that started tracking regularly, before their tracking gradually declined over time to, by the four-month mark, only about one day per week. They still lost about 5% of their weight. A third group, called the low trackers, started tracking only three days a week, and dropped to zero by three months, where they stayed for the rest of the intervention. On average this group lost only 2% of their weight. "One thing that is interesting about this data is, oftentimes in the literature, researchers just look at whether there is a correlation between tracking and overall weight loss outcomes. Ran took a data science approach to the data and found there is more to the story," Pagoto says. "Now we're seeing different patterns of tracking. This will help us identify when to provide extra assistance and who will need it the most." The patterns could help inform future programs which could be tailored to help improve user tracking based on which group they fall into. Future studies will dig deeper into these patterns to understand why they arise and hopefully develop interventions to improve outcomes. "For me, what's exciting about these digital programs is that we have a digital footprint of participant behavior," says Xu. "We can drill down to the nitty-gritty of what people do during these programs. The data can inform precision medicine approaches, where we can take this data science perspective, identify patterns of behavior, and design a targeted approach." Digitally delivered health programs give researchers multitudes of data they never had before which can yield new insights, but this science requires a multidisciplinary approach. "Before, it felt like we were flying in the dark or just going by anecdotes or self-reported measures, but it's different now that we have so much user data. We need data science to make sense of all these data. This is where team science is so important because clinical and data scientists think about the problem from very different perspectives, but together, we can produce insights that neither of us could do on our own. This must be the future of this work," says Pagoto. Xu agrees: "From a data science perspective, machine learning is exciting but if we just have machine learning, we only know what people do, but we don't know why or what to do with this information. That's where we need clinical scientists like Sherry to make sense of these results. That's why team science is so important." —ANI

Study Finds Diet Tracking Essential Element For Effective Weight Loss

New Delhi: Commercial activity will not be allowed in New Delhi district including food delivery services among others. Essential services including postal services and medical services such as path labs for sample collection and medicine delivery will be open, the Traffic Police said on Monday.  
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SS Yadav confirmed that the traffic advisory issued by the police on August 25 remains unchanged.
"Essential services like postal and medical services, as well as sample collections by path labs, will continue to operate across Delhi. In the New Delhi area, commercial activities will remain suspended. Online delivery services will not be permitted, with the exception of medicine delivery,” said the Special CP.&nbsp;
Yadav assured that permission granted for essential services will be respected. Taxis with valid identification, carrying passengers from IGI airport or with hotel bookings in the New Delhi area, will also be allowed.
Regarding metro services, Yadav said that except for the Supreme Court station they will run normally. However, there may be temporary gate closures of 10-15 minutes at some stations due to VIP movement and security restrictions.
“For those with hotel bookings in the New Delhi district arriving from the airport or railway station, entry will be permitted upon presentation of boarding passes and booking documents, albeit with possible 10-15 minute delays due to security checks,” he said.
The Special CP said that from 5 a.m on September 8 to 11:59 p.m on September 10 New Delhi district will be termed the "Controlled Zone 1".
Parts of North and Central Delhi, around Rajghat, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg and Shanti Van Chowk, will be treated as "Controlled Zone 2".&nbsp;

G20 Summit: Commercial activity won't be allowed in New Delhi district

Islamabad: Pakistan's weekly inflation spiked 38.66 per cent on a year-on-year basis, mainly due to a rise in petroleum prices, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said on Saturday.The Sensitive Price Indicator-based inflation increased by 0.93 per cent for the week ending on September 21 as compared to the previous week, the PBS data revealed.
The indicator comprised 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country, the PBS said, Xinhua news agency reported.
During the week, out of 51 items, the prices of 22 items increased, 11 items decreased in price, and 18 items remained stable, the data showed.
The PBS added that the prices of chicken, onions, garlic, petrol and diesel witnessed an increase during the last week.
A decrease was recorded in the prices of sugar, bananas, tomatoes, wheat flour, cooking oil and tea, it said.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has requested police to ensure uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders in the market amid the protest by truckers against a provision in the new penal law regarding hit-and-run road accident cases involving motorists.
Under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the colonial era Indian Penal Code (IPC), drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing the police or any official from the administration can face punishment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.  The Maharashtra Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Protection Department has written a letter to all police commissioners and superintendents of police expressing concern about the stir and its affect on the supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders.
The state level coordinator (oil industry) has requested the Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Protection Department to intervene to resolve the ongoing impasse as truck drivers and petroleum product transporters were on strike in front of the Mumbai refinery on Monday, officials said.  It was observed that packed lorry drivers were on strike and not reporting to the plant due to which the operation of dispatching LPG cylinders in the market was hampered, the letter mentioned.  The same was happening with other petroleum products like petrol, diesel and kerosene, as per the letter.  Considering the affect of the strike, the Food and Civil Supply Department requested police to take necessary measures to ensure smooth and uninterrupted supply of those products.  It also urged for appropriate action under the Essential Commodities Act against drivers and transporters for interruption of supply of petroleum products.  The Food and Civil Supply Department also expected truckers to not get involved in untoward incidents and cause law and order problems.

Mumbai: Petrol pumps in Mumbai and Nagpur witnessed long queues on Tuesday as people came to fill up their vehicle tanks fearing shortage of fuel amid the protest by truck drivers against a provision in the new penal law on hit-and-run accident cases involving motorists.
Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaces the colonial era Indian Penal Code, drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing police or any official from the administration can face up to 10 years imprisonment or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.  Petrol Dealers Association, Mumbai, president Chetan Modi told PTI that the fuel supply to petrol pumps was affected due to the drivers' agitation since Monday.

"Petrol pumps started getting dry since yesterday. If we won't get the supply, most of the pumps will run out of fuel from today," he said.  Mumbai has around 200 petrol pumps.  Modi said he went to the depots of oil marketing companies at Sewri in Mumbai, but the drivers were not letting any fuel tanker move from the facility despite police security.  Nearly 180 tankers are refuelled daily at the Sewri-based depots of oil marketing firms, he said.  Anil Garg, president of the School Bus Association here, told PTI that several fuel pumps witnessed long queues of vehicles for refuelling.  According to transporters, it was a spontaneous agitation started by some over-enthusiastic drivers which got fuelled through messages circulated among them on social media.  No truckers' body has officially declared any strike, they said.  Baba Shinde, a leader of transporters, said the All India Motor Transport Congress has convened a meeting of transporters from across the country wherein the future course of action will be decided.  In Nagpur, the truck drivers' protest triggered panic buying as people started queuing up at petrol pumps since Monday night to fill up their vehicle tanks.  Nagpur Collector Dr Vipin Itankar on Tuesday appealed to the people not to indulge in panic buying of fuel.  Itankar said he held a meeting with representatives of various oil companies and petrol pump associations and there was sufficient stock of petrol, diesel and LPG.  People should not fall prey to rumours and not crowd the petrol pumps unnecessarily, he said.  Local transportation was on Tuesday hit in the city located in Vidarbha region due to a "chakka jam" by the truck drivers, claimed a local functionary of the Shiv Sena (UBT) which is supporting the agitation.  Members of various truck driver associations gathered at Samvidhan Chowk in Nagpur to stage a protest. They have planned to later go to the district collectorate to put forth their demands before the administration.  Various associations of truck drivers have called a meeting in Maa Umiya industrial area of Nagpur to discuss the future course of action, the Sena (UBT) functionary said.  The Maharashtra Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Protection Department on Monday requested police to ensure smooth and uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders in the market.  It also urged for appropriate action under the Essential Commodities Act against drivers and transporters for the interruption of supply of petroleum products.
