Shimla: Eighty films from 32 countries, including 21 feature narratives and 43 short films, will be be showcased at the 11th Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) in Dharamsala next month, as announced on Thursday.
The highlights include the India premieres of Cannes Jury Prize Winner and 2022 Oscar Nominee, Joyland (Pakistan, 2022) by Saim Sadiq; Once Upon A Time in Calcutta (India, 2022) by Aditya Vikram Sengupta; the Anurag Kashyap-presented debut feature by Parth Saurabh, Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar (On Either Sides of the Pond) (India, 2022); 2022 Oscar Nominee, Writing with Fire (India, 2021) by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Sen; and Fire in the Mountains (India 2021) by Ajitpal Singh.
The India premieres of these acclaimed international features will also take place at DIFF 2022: Eternal Spring (Canada, 2022) by Jason Loftus; In Viaggio (Italy, 2022) by Gianfranco Rosi; Lullaby (Spain, 2022) by Alauda Ruiz de AzAa; Mother Lode (Italy, France, Switzerland, 2021) by Matteo Tortone; Navalny (US, 2022) by Daniel Roher; Neptune Frost (Rwanda, US, 2021) by Anisia Uzeyman, Saul Williams; They Carry Death (Spain, Colombia, 2021) by Helena GirAn and Samuel M. Delgado; and Tukdam: Between Worlds (Finland, Ireland, Estonia 2022) by Donagh Coleman.
After two years of being online due to the pandemic, the 11th edition of the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) is back with a physical edition that showcases the latest and finest indie films from India and around the world.
A large contingent of filmmakers will attend DIFF to present their films, and the programme also includes masterclasses and workshops.
DIFF will be held once again at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in McLeodganj.
Festival director Ritu Sarin said: "We're so excited to announce our line-up! As we come out of two years of Covid, we've had a bumper crop of amazing new films from across India and the world to select from. It's been a really difficult challenge for our selection team to sift through so many fine films and we've had many long discussions and debates before deciding on the final programme."

Dharamsala: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Tuesday welcomed the recent statement from the G7 Leaders' summit in Hiroshima, calling for a "world without nuclear weapons".

"This joint statement reflects the reality that we live in an increasingly interdependent world, and represents an opportunity to make this 21st century an era of peace and cooperation.

"As an avowed campaigner for demilitarization throughout the world and the elimination of all nuclear weapons, I firmly believe this to be a positive initiative. In January 2022, when the five nuclear-weapon states made a joint pledge affirming that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, I warmly commended their action," the spiritual leader said in a statement.

"In these times of uncertainty and upheaval across many parts of the globe, it is vitally important that all of us make earnest and concerted efforts to resolve problems through dialogue and diplomacy. Therefore, commitments like the one by the G7 countries represent a powerful message and recognition of the urgency of putting an end to the threat that these weapons pose to humanity.

"A world without nuclear weapons is necessary and possible. In our interconnected world, violence brings suffering even to those far from the conflict. I sincerely hope that we can all remember the oneness of humanity, and recall that harming anyone with violence, including the use of nuclear weapons harms us all," the Dalai Lama said.

"I pray that this 21st century becomes a more compassionate, peaceful and harmonious world," he added. IANS

Electing to bat, England were all out for 353 in their first innings in the fourth test against India in Ranchi on Saturday.
Joe Root top scored for the tourists with an unbeaten 122, while Ollie Robinson (58) made his maiden test fifty.  Ravindra Jadeja (4-67) and Akash Deep (3-83) impressed with the ball for India, who are 2-1 up in the five-test series, which concludes in Dharamsala.

Senior India batter K L Rahul will not feature in the fifth and final Test against England in Dharamsala owing to an injury while pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will return to the team, the BCCI said on Thursday.
Rahul, who continues to feel sore in his right quadriceps, has travelled to London to get an expert opinion on his injury.  The wicketkeeper-batter became unavailable after the series-opener in Hyderabad in January and as per the BCCI, he was 90 per cent fit before the third Test in Rajkot earlier this month.  "Mr. KL Rahul, whose participation in the final IDFC First Bank Test was subject to fitness, has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala. The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring him and coordinating with specialists in London for further management of his issue," the Board said in a release.  Meanwhile Bumrah, who was released from the squad for the fourth Test in Ranchi in line with the team's workload management policy, will link up with the squad in Dharamsala for the final Test, beginning March 7.  India have already taken an unassailable 3-1 lead, following the victory in the fourth Test in Ranchi.  Rahul's absence from the final Test means Rajat Patidar remained with the squad but the MP batter can't be sure of his place in the playing eleven, having aggregated only 63 runs in six innings.  All-rounder Washington Sundar has also been released from the squad.  "He will join Tamil Nadu – his Ranji Trophy side – for their Ranji Trophy Semi-final fixture against Mumbai, starting March 2nd, 2024. He will join the India squad after the completion of the domestic fixture for the fifth Test, if need be," the BCCI said.
Rahul needs to be fully fit before the IPL where he will lead Lucknow Super Giants and is expected to bat in the middle order to bolster his chances of making the India squad for the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean.  It is the same quadriceps injury that had sidelined Rahul for almost four months last year.  Having got injured during the IPL, Rahul returned to action during the Asia Cup in September last and made instant impact. In the Test tour of South Africa last year, Rahul was the only century-maker for India in the drawn series.  The BCCI also said senior pacer Mohammed Shami is recovering well after undergoing a surgery on February 26 for his right heel problem.  "He is recovering well and will soon head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to commence his rehabilitation process," the Board said of Shami.  India's updated squad for fifth Test: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Dharamsala: India's star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on Thursday completed 1000 runs in the Test and with this achievement he became the second fastest Indian to reach thousand Test runs. He achieved the milestone during the fifth and final match of the series against England at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday as he slammed a boundary off Shoaib Bashir in the 15th over.
In terms of innings, the young opener is the second-fastest - 16 - after Vinod Kambli, who accomplished the feat in 14 innings. 22 years, 70 days old Jaiswal is now the fourth youngest batter to cross the 1000 runs in the Test mark and joined the elite list of legends like Sachin Tendulkar (19Y, 217D), Kapil Dev (21Y, 27D), Ravi Shastri (21Y, 197D), and Dilip Vengsarkar (22Y, 293D). Recapping Day One of the fifth Test, after Ravichandran Ashwin cleared off England's tail end, Rohit began the session dealing in boundaries putting the pressure back on England's bowling unit. Jaiswal took his time to settle on the crease and went on to join Rohit in his quest to provide an ideal stand to the hosts. The young left-handed batter took the onus from the skipper to ensure India's healthy run-rate was maintained. He raced to his half-century in 55 balls with a delightful boundary. With a slog sweep on the next ball, Jasiwal once again picked up a boundary showing no signs of stopping. After conceding back-to-back boundaries, Bashir struck back on the next delivery, deceived the southpaw to get him stumped on a score of 57(58). India will resume their innings on Day 2 action with captain Rohit Sharma (52*) and Shubman Gill (26*) standing unbeaten in the middle.

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh): A five-wicket haul on his 100th Test by Ravichandran Ashwin broke the back of England's batting line-up, handling the Three Lions' 'Bazball' school of cricket one final blow as India won the fifth and final Test by an innings and 64 runs at Dharamsala on Saturday. India has won the series 4-1. Despite some promising moments and performances by England throughout the series, the Indian bowling and its youth brigade did not let the 'Bazball' conquer what was described as the 'Final Frontier' for skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum after a lengthy run of success since mid-2022.
England started off the second session at 103/5, with Joe Root (34*) joined by wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes. Foakes, known for playing some serious supporting roles with the bat, ended his innings at just eight runs, while attempting a massive slog sweep but was beaten by Ravichandran Ashwin's spin. England was 113/6. Next up on the crease was Tom Hartley, the lower-order batter who, surprisingly, is at the top of the six-hitting charts for England in this series. Hartley managed to occupy the crease for a while and give decent support to Root from the other end. His 24-ball 20-run knock was ended by Jasprit Bumrah, who trapped him leg-before-wicket. Two balls later, it was Mark Wood's turn to perish without a run with yet another toe crusher by Bumrah. England was 141/8 in 34.4 overs and India needed two more wickets to hand England an embarrassing innings defeat on day three. Root reached his half-century in 88 balls, with five fours. The batter found some support from Shoaib Bashir at the other end. The duo looked all but set to take England to the 200-run mark, but Bashir was cleaned up by Ravindra Jadeja for 13. The top order, consisting of Yashasvi Jaiswal (57 in 58 balls, with five fours and three sixes), skipper Rohit Sharma (103 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes) and Shubman Gill (110 in 150 balls, with 12 fours and five sixes) dominated the English bowling. An 104-run opening partnership between Rohit and Jaiswal and a 171-run stand for the second wicket between Rohit and Gill helped India get the lead quite easily. The pair of Kuldeep Yadav (30 in 69 balls, with two fours) and Jasprit Bumrah (20 in 64 balls, with two fours) put up a 49-run stand to take India to 477, not only frustrating English bowlers with their steady defence, but also securing a healthy lead. England won the toss and opted to bat first. They were bundled out for 218 in their first inning. Zak Crawley (79 in 108 balls, with 11 fours and a six) top-scored for England. He had a 64-run opening stand with Ben Duckett (27 in 58 balls, with four boundaries).
