New Delhi: IIT-JEE (IIT-Joint Entrance Exam) is set to go global with the Indian government planning to hold the exam in 25 countries, right from the US to Vietnam, simultaneously. In Kuala Lumpur and Lagos, these examinations were held last year. Earlier, with the cooperation of the Indian government, the IIT-JEE exams were held in 12 countries. The countries where the examinations will be conducted are: the US, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, China, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, among others. Around 3,900 Under Graduate and 1,300 Postgraduate seats will be made available for the NRIs, Indians and foreign nationals studying abroad. These seats will be reserved in top class engineering institutes of the country. According to the Union Education Ministry, under Direct Admission of Student Abroad (DASA) scheme, these students will be provided admission in top class institutes of the country.Foreign students will be able to get admission in National Institute of Technology, National Institute of Information Technology, School of Planning and Architect and other technical institutions funded by the Central government. These include Triple IT and NIT, which are considered to be the best educational institutions of engineering. However, this system will not be applicable in IITs. Despite the fact that IITs are excluded from DASA, still a large number of engineering institutions are offering these seats. In the above said institutions, 15 per cent seats are reserved for NRIs and foreign students. The union education ministry will welcome those international universities who in collaboration with India's Higher educational institutions can offer various courses for students.Taking this initiative, Indian Ambassadors to 63 countries across the world have been contacted. Some of those countries are: Japan, Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Spain, the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Thailand, the UAE, Argentina, Brazil, Greece, Cyprus, Iceland and Turkey. The Ministry says that the campaign will not only help Indian higher education institutions to establish cooperation with foreign educational institutions but also motivate foreign universities to send their students to Indian institutions. Under the Union government's Institution of Eminence scheme, many universities have been given the status of Institute of Eminence. Foreign students are attracted towards the Institute of Eminence in the country.According to former IIT Professor D.K. Sharma, every year, thousands of foreign nationals come to the country to take admission in Indian universities. However, the process of admission of foreign students in Indian institutions is still limited to only a few universities in the country. But now efforts are being made to give it a wider form. Definitely, its benefit will be seen. According to Professor C.S. Kandpal, after JEE MAINS, JEE ADVANCE examination is conducted. On the basis of the results of the JEE Advance, 23 IIT, 31 NIT, 23 Triple IT offer 40,00 seats. Last year, in the JEE-Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2, around 14,1699 candidates appeared.Around 41,862 candidates had qualified for the JEE-Advance 2021. Of the qualified, 6,452 were women. Significantly, 13 different languages have been approved for important examinations like JEE. Students aspiring to do engineering can take examinations in their mother tongue under this facility. This year, the JEE-Mains examination will be conducted in June and July in two phases. The first phase of JEE Mains exam is starting from June 20. JEE Advanced Test will be conducted for the students who are successful in JEE Mains. However, in many engineering colleges and technical educational institutions, admissions are provided on the basis of JEE Mains merit. In such cases, foreign and NRI students can also be admitted on the basis of JEE Mains exam.—IANS

Imphal: Film Forum Manipur (FFM) Chairman Laimayum Surjakanta Sharma in a letter to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said that with active support from the Directorate of Film Festivals, Manipuri cinema has recently through a yearlong celebration celebrated 50 years of its cinematography having being released the first Manipuri feature film on April 9, 1972. "If the government considers conferring Dadasaheb Phalke Award upon Syam Sharma it would be a fitting tribute to Manipuri Cinema on the eventful year of 2022 (1972 - 2022)," the letter said. The film body said that credit for the milestone is largely due to Syam Sharma for his brilliance and dedication to creating masterpieces that have moved international audiences, furthering the growth of Indian cinema as a whole. Apart from his films, Syam Sharma has also been the force to install an ecosystem for the growth of committed filmmakers and technicians in Manipur.The FFM said that Syam Sharma is the ground-breaking doyen of Manipuri cinema who has been working relentlessly in portraying the cultural and emotional nuances with a humanitarian vision through cinematic storytelling with utmost simplicity and distinctive artistic signature. He is considered the lighting lamp of creative Manipur, as one of the great masters, who has put the Indian cinema into the global discourse through his five decades of cinematic excellence making the native essence of life an immersive experience beyond the regional cultural boundaries. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Aribam Syam Sharma would also help bridge the cultural gap and integrate Manipur and the northeast emotionally with the national ethos, it said.The film body said that Syam Sharma's 'Imagi Ningthem' and 'Ishanou' feature in the 100 greatest Indian films of all time. Considering his contribution in all of the three genres of cinema - Art, Commercial and Documentary, national award-winning film critic, Meghachandra Kongbam, referred to him as the 'Genius of India Cinema'. The FFM said that at the age of 86, the veteran Manipuri filmmaker is busy scripting for his next production. So far, he has directed 15 feature films and 31 non-feature films and scored music for 25 films. Nearly all of his films have been screened at the 'Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India. With 15 national awards - six for feature films and nine for non-features - a rare feat by any standards, Syam Sharma is an internationally acknowledged filmmaker of artistic excellence, the film organization said. —IANS

Veraval (Gujarat): Congress MLA Vimal Chudasama has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to travel from Bhavnagar to Somnath by road in a bid to draw attention to the potholed highway. Chudasama, MLA from the Somnath constituency, in the letter has stated, "The coastal highway was approved by the Central government seven years ago, the highway is incomplete and construction work is going on at snail's pace, but on rest of the road, at many places there are plenty of potholes, which have caused many fatal accidents. Though I had written to the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, no action has been taken."
He said that he believed that only if the Prime Minister travels by road on this highway and experiences the plight that people are facing, problems can be addressed. The Prime Minister is on a two-day visit to Gujarat from August 27. And, Chudasama wishes the PM to visit Somnath by road during this visit. He even said the Prime Minister is the chairman of the Somnath Temple Trust, and lakhs of devotees travel on this highway during the holy month Shravan. "He should understand the problem faced by devotees," said Chudasama.
Gir Somnath, BJP district committee president Mansinh Parmar said he has no idea about the Congress MLA's letter to the PM, but said, 'I will look into the issue." BJP Chief spokesman Yamal Vyas termed the letter a political stunt to gain publicity and political mileage. He questioned the MLA's intentions. Vyas said if he was seriously interested in solving the problem, he would have taken up the matter with the National Highways Authority of India officers instead of writing a letter to the Prime Minister. —IANS&nbsp;

New Delhi (The Hawk): Sharing her experience of getting honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2020, legendary actress Ms Asha Parekh said that it’s a long time after which a lady has been accorded with this award. Expressing the surprise and pleasure over receiving the Award, she said, “I am also the first Gujarati to get this award. So, it was a great thing for me but for 2 days it didn’t registered in mind. I was thankful firstly to God because it was too big a surprise for me”. Ms Asha Parekh was speaking during the In-Conversation session at the 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa today.
Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2020 was accorded to Ms Asha Parekh for her exemplary lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. She was conferred with this highest award in India in the field of cinema by the President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu at the 68th National Film Awards held on 30th September, 2022 in New Delhi.
During the session, Ms Asha Parekh talked about her experience of working in various films such as Kati Patang, Teesri Manzil, Do badan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Baharon Ke Sapne among others.
Apart from acting, the renowned actress also spoke about how she explored her career in TV direction and production. She said that Gujarati serial- Jyoti which turned out to be a success, gave her confidence. This motivated her further to come up with more TV serials. Best remembered for her series, Kora Kagaz, Parekh's other small screen offerings include Baaje Payal, Dal Mein Kaala and Kuch Pal Saath Tumhara.
Ms Asha Parekh talked about her association with various organisations and associations related to film industry. She became President of Cine Artistes’ Association from 1994 to 2000. She was also the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board) of India, holding the honorary post from 1998- 2001. She served as treasurer of Cine and Television Artists Association (CINTAA).&nbsp;
Ms Asha Parekh is a renowned film actress, director and producer and an accomplished Indian classical dancer. Starting her career as a child actor she made her debut as the lead heroine in Dil Deke Dekho and has gone on to act in over 95 movies. Mysuru: Karnataka Minister for Forest Eshwar Khandre on Friday inaugurated 'Gaja Payana' which marks the commencement of the majestic march of elephants from jungle camps to premises of the Mysuru palace to participate in the historical Dasara festival.  The event is regarded as the festival of the land and the state government celebrates it with all grandeur.
People from across the country and abroad visit the city during the festivities. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced that noted Kannada music composer and activist Hamsalekha would inaugurate Dasara this time.  The event was organised at the base camp at Veeranahosalli in Nagarahole National Park in Hunsur taluk. First batch of nine elephants participated in the inaugural function.  The elephants are expected to reach Mysuru on Saturday.  They will be accorded traditional welcome at the Mysuru Palace on September 4. The group of elephants which started the journey included Abhimanyu, which will carry the golden howdah in the famous procession. Dhananjaya, Gopi, Kanjan, Vijaya, Arjuna, Bhima, Varalaxmi and Mahendra are the other elephants.  Minister Eshwar Khandre inaugurated the Gaja Pay an event by paying flower tribute and offering traditional worship to the group of elephants.

Mumbai: Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film ('Majha Bal' – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.
After many Marathi songs, she finally landed a Hind film song assignment for 'Chunariya' (1948), and then a solo in Hindi for 'Raat Ki Rani' (1949), but the struggles were yet to end.
She continued to render side-y type of songs for junior artistes or dancers, and mostly for tier-II films or composers, many frowning at her voice which would not jell with most heroines of the day, or getting overshadowed by other popular voices in those times.
The big moment, and number, came with an established male singer Mohammed Rafi for 'Boot Polish' (1954), when they crooned the evergreen number, ‘Nanhe Munne Bachche Teri Mutthi Me Kya Hai’, which caught and turned the nation’s ears to Asha’s voice.
That was an era dominated by female stalwarts like Noorjehan (who later moved to Pakistan), Suraiya, Geeta Roy-Dutt, Shamshad Begum, Zohrabai Ambalewali, Mubarak Begum and more, and even Lata had to jostle through the crowd to make her voice heard.
Perhaps, it was the legendary Omkar Prasad Nayyar who proved to be the turning point for Asha when he made her sing 'Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar' (‘CID’, 1956) with Rafi and it was a runaway hit, along with other songs by Shamshad Begum and Geeta Dutt.
Presumably patting himself for his choice, Nayyar deployed Asha’s voice in all the female lead numbers for 'Naya Daur' (1957) which bagged him his first Filmfare Award (1958).
“Then I worked extensively with Asha… People ask me why I never signed Lata to sing… I found Lata’s voice ‘too thin’ and unsuited for my style of music, unlike the other female singers of that era,” chuckled Nayyar in a 1997 interview with this correspondent.
He spoke with pride, how he was “the only” music director to achieve heights of success without ever using Lata Mangeshkar, but exploited the silvery rich voices of others like Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutta, Shamshad Begum, etc.
Khayyam once narrated to this correspondent how composing for 'Umrao Jaan' (1981) was a big challenge for him, coming barely 9 years after the mega-hit musical 'Pakeezah' (1972), both centering around the shunned theme of ‘tawaifs’.
“The filmmakers and I decided that not only would ‘Umrao Jaan’ look different but also sound different… So I made Asha sing all the songs, with certain changes in her singing style. Fortunately, it was received very well,” Khayyam said modestly, the occasion was when Asha was named for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000).
However, compared with 'Pakeezah', not only did 'Umrao Jaan' stand on a different pedestal in public minds, but also won four National Awards (1982) including for Khayyam as Best Music Director and Asha ('Dil Cheez Kya Hai').
Over the decades, Asha soared the musical skies with strength with her unique singing gait, flitting from notes to melodies to symphonies to fusion, winning hearts and minds, and edged firmly into the formidable ‘G5 of Music’ - Rafi-Kishore-Mukesh, Lata-Asha.
Unshackling her voice from traditions, Asha reached heights of popularity, effortlessly singing in different genres ranging from regular songs, ghazals, bhajans, qawwalis, pacey-husky-sexy numbers, cabarets, pop, fusion, et al.
In fact, one of her qawwalis composed by Roshan - 'Nigaahen Milane Ko Jee Chahta Hai' ('Dil Hi To Hai' - 1963), remains among among the Top 5 in the genre since.
So much so that other ‘conservative’ composers like Naushad Ali, Madan Mohan, Jaidev, Roshan, composed songs specially for her or took her voice for certain difficult ones, besides of course, Nayyar, Mohammed Zahur Hashmi ‘Khayyam’, ‘Ravi’ Shankar Sharma, S. D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Sonik-Omi, Rakesh Roshan, R. D. Burman and Ravindra Jain.
Then came the era of the modern brigade of Bhappi Lahiri, Ilaiyaraja, A. R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, and many others… even as music tastes shifted from the soothing melody to sheer cacophony…
Simultaneously, her sister Lata also became a trail-blazer, as the senior singers faded away and she competed with the younger era of women crooners.
Asha made international waves, too, becoming the first Indian Grammy nominee (2006), collaborating with albums with global artistes and cricketer Brett Lee (‘You’re the One for Me’ – 2006), belting songs in nearly two dozen Indian and foreign languages, bagging the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Vibhushan among many other awards and honours, et al.
Besides the recording studios, she is ranked a MasterChef par excellence, dishing out yummy gourmet cuisine for celebs and runs a global chain of restaurants, Asha’s for over a decade.
On the occasion of awarding the ‘Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2022, Asha apparently gathered courage to open up her heart before the audience, and regaled them, oft tongue-in-cheek with many little known or unknown facets of her Bharat Ratna Didi’s life and times.&nbsp;

Colombo: Rohit Sharma's India team came up with a superb bowling display to defend a small total and end Sri Lanka's 13-match winning streak in One-Day Internationals (ODI) here at R. Premadasa Stadium, here on Tuesday.
In a low-scoring thriller, India fought back after being bundled out for 213 by defeating Sri Lanka by 41 runs in the fourth match of the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup and sealed a place in the final.
The 213-run target wasn’t easy to chase on this pitch, which was tricky to bat on. The chase wasn’t good for the Lankans as they lost the wicket of Pathum Nissanka in the third over, after which they lost two more wickets in the Power-play.&nbsp;
Two of these three wickets were claimed by pacer Jasprit Bumrah while Mohammad Siraj bagged the third.Charith Asalanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama added 43 runs for the fourth wicket before Kuldeep Yadav came into action and got rid of both batters in consecutive overs.
However, Sri Lanka again found back through an outstanding partnership between Dhananjaya De Silva and Dinuth Wellalage for the seventh wicket. The pair added 63 runs in the late fightback and dragged Sri Lanka close to victory, needing 44 runs off 55 deliveries.
The lone warrior Dinuth Wellalage battled till the end as the wicket tumbled at the other end. The 20-year-old's resilient inning was the centrepiece of the match for Sri Lanka as it came after the young spinner had rattled India with his maiden five-wicket haul. The brilliant performance earned him praise from Virat Kohli during the post-match handshake.
In the end, it was the spinners who turned the tables for India, as Jadeja took a wicket and Kuldeep wrapped up the match by taking two wickets in the end. He finished with dominating figures of (9.3-0-43-4).
Earlier in the day, India batted first on winning the toss and posted a below-par score of 213 runs on a tricky pitch that was very challenging to bat. Rohit Sharma showed his brilliant batting skills and got his second consecutive half-century in the tournament.&nbsp;
Apart from him, K.L Rahul yet again batted with purpose in the middle overs and scored 39 runs.
It was a historic day for Sri Lankan spinners as India were bowled out by spinners for the first time. The Sri Lankan trio of Dimuth Wellalage (5-40), Charith Asalanka (4-19), and Maheesh Theekshan shared all the 10 wickets in the Indian innings.
For his terrific all-round performance, Wellalage was declared ‘Player of the Match as he claimed 5-40 and then top-scored for Sri Lanka with 42.&nbsp;
Wellalage said, "First of all I want to congratulate the Indian team. Unfortunately, we lost the match today, but we have one more game to make it to the final. Kuldeep Yadav is a great bowler, but I tried to play my normal game and stay positive. [How were you feeling?] From a small age, I worked hard and had a positive mindset. Want to thank my teammates and supporting staff."
Winning captain, Rohit Sharma said, "It was a good game. For us also to play a game like that under pressure. Challenged a lot of aspects of our game. We definitely want to play on pitches like to see what we can achieve. [Hardik] He's worked hard on his bowling over the last couple of years, and it's pleasing to see how he bowled that spell. Not an easy target to defend. The pitch got slightly better towards the end so we had to hold our nerve and bowl consistently.&nbsp;
Losing captain, Dasun Shanaka said, "We didn't expect this kind of a wicket, but after the first 10 overs we came into the match brilliantly with the spinners. The luxury of the two genuine batters bowling is great, They've done well in the nets but it was great how they performed."

Asia Cup: Bowlers help India defend small total, end Lanka’s 13-ODI win streak; seal spot in final

Colombo: On a tough pitch where very few of his teammates clicked with the bat, opener Shubman Gill stood tall to hit his fifth ODI century, a sparkling 121 off 133 balls. But it went in vain as Bangladesh edged India by six runs in a thrilling Asia Cup Super Four match at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday.
After captain Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy hit half-centuries before the lower-order batters stepped up in carrying Bangladesh to 265/8, Tanzim Hasan Sakib took 2-32 on debut before the four-man spin attack relied on turn and bounce from the pitch to apply the choke on India.
Though Gill hit eight fours and five sixes in a masterful knock, and Axar Patel made a quick 42 off 34 balls at the fag end, it was not enough as India were bowled out for 259 in 49.5 overs, with Mustafizur Rahman taking three wickets as Bangladesh signed off from the competition on a high.
Chasing 266, India were dealt two big blows by Tanzim in the first three overs. On his outswinger, captain Rohit Sharma chipped an early drive straight to cover-point, while Tilak Varma’s debut innings ended with him shouldering arms for an away-going delivery, only for the ball to come in and hit the stumps.
Gill was proficient in getting on top of the bounce to cut, drive and punch with precision, while KL Rahul was deep in the crease to execute his cut shots well. But he was soon stuck at the crease and in a bid to break free, whipped straight to mid-wicket off Mahedi Hasan.
Gill then danced down the pitch against Mahedi in the 20th over to heave him over mid-wicket for six and reach his half-century in style. But he was losing partners from the other end as Ishan Kishan missed a reverse sweep and was trapped plumb lbw by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Suryakumar Yadav majorly used the sweep shot in his 34-ball stay, which also fetched him two boundaries, as Bangladesh’s spinners stepped up in stemming the run-flow. But the usage of sweep also made him very predictable and caused his downfall when he was cast by Shakib Al Hasan in an attempt to sweep again.
Gill showed signs of change in gears when he danced down the pitch to slam Shakib for two sixes over the long-on fence, even as Ravindra Jadeja was castled after he completely missed the ball on a cross-bat hoick. Gill eventually got his hundred in 117 balls with a brace through deep mid-wicket and took back-to-back fours off Tanzim, followed by heaving Mahedi for six.
But on the very next ball, Mahedi pitched the ball slower and outside the off-stump, on which Gill lofted, but holed out to long-off. Axar, who survived an LBW appeal, kept India in the hunt by pulling and heaving Nasum for four and six respectively.
He followed it up by lofting Mahedi down the ground for a four and six respectively in the 48th over. But Rahman turned the game on its head in the next over, as Thakur clipped a full-toss to square leg and Axar holed out to long-off just after hitting a four, enough to ensure a Bangladesh victory.
Earlier, at 59/4, Bangladesh were in tatters. Shakib stepped up with his calculative play to top-score with 80 and shared a 101-run partnership with Hridoy, who made a lovely 54.&nbsp;
The lower-order of Nasum, Mahedi and Tanzim were impressive in hitting 44, 29 not out and 14 not respectively against an Indian bowling line-up minus Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.
Pushed into batting first, Tanzid Hasan smashed three beautiful boundaries, two of which were back-to-back well-timed drives against Shardul. Mohammed Shami brought India’s first breakthrough by getting the ball to move in off the seam and cast Litton Das through the gate.
In the next over, Shardul dismissed Tanzid, who dragged onto his stumps while trying to pull a short ball. Anamul Haque Bijoy, playing in his first ODI since December 2022, became Shardul’s second victim when he top-edged a pull to Rahul.
India could have got Bangladesh into more trouble in the 10th over if Tilak and Suryakumar hadn’t dropped catches to get Mehidy out off Shardul’s bowling. Four overs later, Mehidy pushed at a turning-away delivery from Axar and edged to Rohit at slip moving to his right.
While Shakib held one end up with his drives and sweeps, Hridoy was quick to be aggressive by smacking Tilak for a brace of sixes over long-on and deep mid-wicket. Axar found more turn, but Hridoy got an outside edge between keeper and slip going for four.
Shakib also got an edge off Jadeja for four and danced down the pitch to smack Axar for two sixes, one of which fetched him his 55th ODI fifty. He then got a lucky edge past the keeper for four and nailed the slog-sweep off Jadeja for six. Hridoy followed it up by hitting back-to-back fours off Shardul as the 100-run partnership came between him and Shakib.
But on the first ball after the drinks break, Shardul struck immediately as Shakib chopped onto his stumps, followed by Jadeja trapping Shamim Hossain lbw to get his 200th ODI scalp. Hridoy marched forward to reach his fifty by using Axar’s pace to place the shot past backward point for four, before holing out to deep mid-wicket for Shami.
Bangladesh’s quest of touching 250 looked in danger, but Nasum, Mahedi and Tanzim brought out an impressive display of stroke play to add 87 runs collectively and take the team to a winning total.

Colombo: Mohammed Siraj became only the second bowler to take a six-fer in a men's ODI Asia Cup final after Ajantha Mendis, as he picked a career-best 6-21 in a deadly spell to set up India’s eighth title with a ten-wicket thrashing of Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium here on Sunday.
After play resumed at 3:40 pm, due to rain delaying the start, Siraj got massive help from movement off the pitch, making the ball talk both ways and leaving Sri Lanka batters bamboozled to pick a magnificent career-best 6-21 in seven overs, including four scalps coming in his second over of the game.
Apart from Siraj blowing away Sri Lankan batters and becoming first Indian bowler to take four wickets in an over, Hardik Pandya took three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah had a scalp to his name as the Indian fast-bowlers took all ten wickets in bowling out Sri Lanka for just 50, their second-lowest ODI total and the least they have scored in the format against India, as well as in the Asia Cup.
Bumrah gave India a dream start by enticing Kusal Perera to chase a wide, away-swinging delivery and the left-handed batter nicked behind to wicketkeeper K.L. Rahul moving to his left.
Siraj’s first over saw him bowl six outswingers and beat the batters four times, showcasing his accuracy and consistency, two constant pillars in him inflicting the perfect carnage on Sri Lankan batters, apart from varying his release points to bowl a nagging line and length.
On the first ball of his second over, Siraj bowled an outswinger yet again and Pathum Nissanka could drive only to backward point, who moved to his right to complete the catch. A dot ball later, Siraj trapped Sadeera Samawickrama lbw with a sharp nip-backer beating the inside edge and striking the batter in front of stumps.
On the very next ball, Charith Asalanka chipped the first ball he faced straight to cover point. Dhananjaya de Silva survived the hat-trick ball by punching Siraj past mid-on for four. But Siraj had the last laugh as de Silva pushed at an outswinger, giving a faint edge behind to take a catch.
Siraj grabbed his five-wicket haul in 16 balls by getting late movement at a fuller delivery to swing past Dasun Shanaka’s outside edge and sent the off-stump on a cartwheel ride.
Seeing the carnage from the other end, Kusal Mendis tried to get Sri Lanka’s innings back on track from 12/6 by taking two boundaries square of the off-side against Bumrah.
But Siraj grabbed his sixth wicket by getting one to nip back in from outside off and castle Mendis through the gate, to grab the best figures by a fast-bowler in the men’s ODI Asia Cup. Pandya joined the wicket-takers list by bouncing out Dunith Wellalage, giving Rahul a simple catch on the top edge. He took out the remaining two wickets to end Sri Lanka’s innings at 50 in 92 legal balls.
Chasing a paltry 51, India sent Ishan Kishan to open alongside Shubman Gill, who completed the chase with 263 balls remaining. Gill began by nonchalantly flicking Pramod Madushan for four, and Kishan ramped and slashed Matheesha Pathirana for back-to-back fours.
Gill feasted on Madhushan’s deliveries by nailing a drive, punching past point and slamming a pull to take three boundaries off him to race through the chase.

Colombo: India fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj broke a plethora of records when he became the first Indian bowler to bag four wickets in one over of men’s ODIs when he took four wickets in five deliveries against Sri Lanka in the 2023 Asia Cup final at the R. Premadasa Stadium here on Sunday.
In a match in which spin was felt to have called the shots more, Siraj stood out with his swing and usage of the crease to blow Sri Lanka away.
On the first ball of his second over, Siraj bowled an outswinger and Pathum Nissanka could drive only to backward point, who moved to his right to complete the catch. A dot ball later, Siraj trapped Sadeera Samawickrama lbw with a sharp nip-backer beating the inside edge and striking the batter in front of stumps.

Siraj equalled the feats of Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas (against Bangladesh in 2003), Pakistan’s Mohammad Sami (against New Zealand in 2003) and England’s Adil Rashid (against West Indies in 2019) to take four wickets in an over of men’s ODI since 2002, thus becoming the first from India to do so.
Siraj also took 16 balls to complete his five-wicket haul, the joint-quickest to reach the mark alongside Vaas and USA’s Ali Khan. Siraj also has the record now for most wickets in the first 10 overs for India in an ODI since 2002.
Playing in his 29th ODI, Siraj took 1002 balls to get his 50th wicket in the format — the second quickest for any bowler in the history of ODIs, only behind Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis’ 847 balls, making him the joint-fourth-quickest among all Indian bowlers to get the milestone.
Siraj grabbed his sixth wicket by getting one to nip back in from outside off and castle Kusal Mendis through the gate, to get the record for the best bowling figures by a pace bowler in the Asia Cup, going past Pakistan’s Aaqib Javed, who picked 5/19 against India at Sharjah in 1995.

Mumbai: Filmmaker SS Rajamouli has announced the biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke titled ‘Made In India’, which will be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Nitin Kakkar.&nbsp;
Taking to Instagram and X, where he shared the teaser of the project, Rajamouli, who will be presenting the movie, said that making the biopic is tough.&nbsp;
“When I first heard the narration, it moved me emotionally like nothing else. Making a biopic is tough in itself, but conceiving one about the FATHER OF INDIAN CINEMA is even more challenging. Our boys are ready and up for it..:) With immense pride, Presenting MADE IN INDIA…” Rajamouli captioned the video.&nbsp;
‘Made In India’ is said to be based on ‘the father of Indian cinema’ Dadasaheb Phalke.
The film will be released in six languages -- Marathi, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.&nbsp;
The film will be produced by VarunGupta of MaxStudios and SS Karthikeya of Showing Business.

Bengaluru: Minister for Social Welfare Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa said on Friday that the Congress government will hold a “simple and meaningful” Dasara, the state festival, this time in the backdrop of the severe drought situation existing in the state.
Making the announcement on social media, Minister Mahadevappa said that “due to the failure of rain the farmers in the state are in a crisis situation. In this backdrop, it has been decided to celebrate a meaningful Dasara festival.”
The festival, which attracts international and national tourists from all over to Mysuru city, is celebrated every year during the festival of Vijayadashami with all the grandeur and pompous style.
The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Sugarcane Cultivators Association and other organisations have demanded a low-key affair celebration on Dasara.
Minister Mahadevappa is the district in-charge minister for Mysuru district and Dasara Executive Committee President. The 10-day Dasara festival will be celebrated in the month of October.
The farmer community has been agitated over the decision of the Supreme Court to release water to Tamil Nadu and if the stay is not issued, they fear that the standing crops in Mysuru, Mandya districts will get destroyed.
The people of the region were expecting that Dasara would be celebrated with all the grandeur as the festival was not celebrated with pomp and show in the past three years.
Sources stated that the decision would be taken on the list of programmes to be organised as part of Dasara festivities. Mahadevappa had earlier sought Rs 30 crore grant for the celebration of the festival. Since CM Siddaramaiah also hails from Mysuru, all preparations were being done for a grand Dasara, however the failure of rain has played spoilsports. The state government had selected famous music director and activist Hamsalekha to inaugurate the Dasara festival and the decision ran into a controversy.
The Karnataka government had declared that 161 taluks are severely hit by drought in the state. The state had also announced 34 taluks have moderate drought.
The order stated that during the 2023 Monsoon among the 31 districts and 236 taluks of the state, 195 taluks are facing the drought situation. 161 taluks are regarded as severely affected by drought and 34 are moderately hit by drought. The state government has taken the decision based on the report by the district commissioners done as per the guidelines of drought declaration guidelines of the central government.

Addressing the convocation ceremony of state-run Bharathidasan University, the Prime Minister quoted the 'Puthiyathor Ulagam Seivom' Tamil verses of poet Bharathidasan, after whom the university had been named, and said it meant creating a brave new world which is also the university's motto.  Modi said the Indian youth were already creating such a world. The Indian scientists are on the world map through missions like Chandrayaan and 'our innovators took the number of patents from around 4,000 in 2014 to almost 50,000 now.'  India's 'humanity scholars are showcasing the India story to the world like never before.' Also, the nation's musicians and artists were continuously bringing international awards for the country, he said.
Giving back to the people for a better society and country is the true purpose of education, he underlined.  Modi is the first prime Minister to address the convocation ceremony of the varsity, established in 1982.  In a very brief interaction with a group of students, he asked if anyone was interested to go to Delhi, to which two women students raised their hands and smiled.  The Prime Minister paid floral tributes to a bust of Bharathidasan (1891-1964), hailed as revolutionary Tamil poet, and he posed for a group-photograph with students, Governor R N Ravi and Chief Minister M K Stalin.

Juggling the ancient universal truths of astrology and karma, the movie explores how every action has certain consequences, echoing the age-old Hindi adage "Jaise karoge, waise bharoge" (Just as you sow, so shall you reap). Talking more about the film, Shreyas said, "For me, 'Kartam Bhugtam' embodies a universal truth - what goes around, comes around. The mystery lies in the unpredictability of when and how karma unfolds. When I heard the title, I was immediately drawn to the film, confident that its story would be as unique and compelling as its name."
Director Soham Shah added, "'Kartam Bhugtam' is a psychological thriller that deals with the intricate workings of Karma.
