Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal Sunday moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 16 kmph during the past 6 hours and intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Asani' (pronounced as Asani), India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.The system lay centered at 5.30 am over Southeast Bay of Bengal, about 450 km west-northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands), 380 km west of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 970 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 1030 km south-southeast of Puri (Odisha).'It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm over east central Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours,' the&nbsp;IMD said adding that the system is very likely to continue to move northwestwards till May 10th evening and reach West-central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast.The IMD DG Mrutunjay Mohaptra has on Saturday made it clear the cyclone was unlikely to make landfall either in the coast of Odisha or Andhra Pradesh, but will move parallel to the coast in the sea.The IMD in its latest bulletin said that the the system will remain in the form of a cyclonic storm till Sunday evening and later intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and will continue to remain in this form till May 10 night.Subsequently, it will lose steam in the sea and become another cyclonic storm on May 11 and 12.While the maximum speed limit on May 8 will remain at 60 to 70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph, its speed may increase to 90 to 100 kmph with gusting up to 110 kmph by Sunday afternoon and then speed up by evening to reach 95 to 105kmph with gusting to 115 kmph.On May 9th, the wind speed will be 105 to 115 gusting 125 kmph and then the storm is expected to lose stream in the sea on May 10 with wind speed coming down to 96-105 gusting 115 in the early hours reducing progressively as the day wears off.Meanwhile, Odisha government said it has not lowered guards even after getting information that the cyclone will not hit the state's coast.The state was prepared to evacuate 7.5 lakh people if need be, Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena said—PTI

Odisha: Cyclone Asani which made landfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday night has weakened into a depression over the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said early Thursday.Light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.Light to moderate rainfall are also likely at a few places over coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal on Thursday.'Deep Depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh remained practically stationary during the last six hours and weakened into a depression over the same region,' the IMD said.Early on Thursday morning movement of vehicular traffic was affected Kakinada-Uppada Beach Road as the road was damaged due to strong winds and heavy rains as an impact of cyclone Asani.Police said that restoration work will begin soon.According to the weather forecaster, the depression lay centered at 11.30 pm on Wednesday over the region, close to West of Andhra's Machilipatnam and is likely to hover around the same region and will further weaken into a 'Well Marked Low-Pressure Area' by Thursday morning.The IMD said in an early morning bulletin on Thursday that Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph will prevail around the system centre and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours.Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely to prevail along and off the districts of Krishna, East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam of Puducherry.Also squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off adjoining districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh during the same period.Similarly, squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail off Odisha coast during next 12 hours, the IMD bulletin said.On Wednesday, CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy held a review meeting via video conference with Collectors, SPs, and other senior officials on the action to be taken in the districts affected by the Asani cyclone.In the Krishna District District Collector Ranjit Basha, District SP Siddharth Kaushal and Joint Collector Mahesh Kumar later visited cyclone-hit areas along with National Disaster Relief teams.The CM also announced financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to be distributed per person at the time of leaving rehabilitation camps for home and it should be at least Rs 2,000 per family.—ANI

Islamabad: A top commander of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Omar Khalid Khorasani and three other top militant leaders have been killed in a mysterious blast in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province, a Pakistani media report said on Monday. A vehicle carrying senior commanders of the militant group, including Khorasani, was on Sunday targeted with a mysterious explosive device, according to Afghan officials and local sources, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.The top militants were travelling in the Birmal district of the province for a meeting when their vehicle hit a roadside mine, the report said. All aboard the vehicle, also carrying other TTP commanders such as Abdul Wali Mohmand, Mufti Hassan, and Hafiz Dawlat Khan, were killed in the explosion, The Express Tribune quoted a senior Afghan official as saying. According to a local source, the TTP leaders were travelling “for consultation” when their vehicle hit a roadside mine on Sunday.Khorasani, who belonged to the Mohmand tribal district, was considered a top member of the TTP -- the militant group which wants to impose the law of Sharia across Pakistan. Khorasani, who carried a bounty of Rs 10 million on his head. Hafiz Dawlat from the Orakzai tribal district was an important member of the group and a close trustee of Khorasani, while Mufti Hassan hailed from the Malakand division and pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the deceased leader of the Islamic State terrorist organisation. TTP intelligence chief Abdul Rashid alias Uqabi Bajauri was also killed in a landmine blast in Kunar province of Afghanistan on Sunday morning, according to local Afghan sources. The TTP is yet to confirm these targeted killings of its top commanders, an incident that would certainly undermine the Afghan Taliban-brokered peace negotiations between the TTP and the Pakistan government. The news comes after the outlawed group and Pakistan reached a deadlock during their talks as the outfit refused to budge from its demand for the reversal of the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, the report said.&nbsp;—PTI

Islamabad: The Taliban on Monday confirmed the killing of a top Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander, Omar Khalid Khorasani in Afghanistan and sought an investigation of the incident from the Taliban government.
According to Taliban spokesman Muhammad Khorasani, "Senior TTP leader Omar Khalid Khorasani and two other members of the banned outfit were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan on Sunday evening."
In a statement today, TTP officials said that the car carrying Omar came under attack in the eastern Paktika province near the Barmal district on Sunday evening, the Dawn reported.
They urged the Taliban government in Afghanistan to investigate the incident and unearth "spies" who could be responsible for the death of senior TTP leaders, the Dawn reported.
Omar's real name was Abdul Wali Mohmand and he previously headed the TTP in the Mohmand Agency bordering Afghanistan. Apart from Omar, the two other men killed in the attack have been identified as Mufti Hassan and Hafiz Dawlat Khan. They were among several TTP leaders who had joined the outlawed Daesh in 2014. Omar Khalid Khorasani, a former journalist and poet, who studied at several madrasas in Pakistan's Karachi previously headed the TTP in the Mohmand Agency bordering Afghanistan. His real name was Abdul Wali Mohmand. Recently, a jirga member had posted the TTP leader's photo on the sideline of its meeting with Pakistan's side which had held two rounds of talks in Kabul in the first week of June and late July. Omar and a majority of the TTP members from the Mohmand agency had parted ways with the TTP and formed a splinter faction Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat Ahrar (TTP-JA) in 2014.
The then TTP chief Maulvi Fazalullah had sacked him after he had announced the formation of his own group Jamaat ul Ahrar, which comprised almost all the Taliban leaders from the Mohmad Agency. Omar had accused the TTP leadership of deviating from the outfit's ideology.
The TTP leader's killing could be seen as a major blow to the group, especially at a time when it is involved in talks with the Pakistani government, the Dawn reported.
Meanwhile, the United States added Omar's name to the US State Department's Rewards for Justice wanted list in March 2018. US government had a reward of up to USD 3 million for information on Abdul Wali Mohmand.
"Wali is the leader of Jamaat ul-Ahrar (JuA), a militant faction affiliated with Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. Under Wali's leadership, JuA has been one of the most operationally active TTP networks in Punjab Province, Pakistan and has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks throughout Pakistan," said Rewards for Justice (RFJ), US Department of State's premier national security rewards programme.
"Wali reportedly operates from Afghanistan's Nangarhar and Kunar Provinces. Wali was born in Mohmand Agency, Pakistan. He is a former journalist and poet and studied at several madrasas in Karachi, Pakistan," RFJ added.
On Monday, another top TTP leader Abdul Rashid, who belonged to Bajaur tribal district, was also killed in a landmine blast in Kunar province.
In January this year, the TTP confirmed the death of senior leader Mufti Khalid Balti alias Mohammad Khorasani in the eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan. The ongoing peace talks between the TTP and Pakistan government reached a stalemate as the outlawed group refused to give in on its demand for the reversal of the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Despite a series of meetings between the two sides in recent weeks to break the impasse, there has also been a stalemate over the issue of TTP laying down arms in case of a peace deal, The Express Tribune reported. Talks between the two sides began in October 2021 to seek a political solution to the issue. The talks that were held at the request of the Afghan Taliban led to a one-month ceasefire in November. However, the truce could not last long as differences emerged soon. —ANI&nbsp;
