Phoolka joining BJP a key moment in fight for justice, says Tarun Chugh

Chandigarh, April 1 (IANS) BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday welcomed senior advocate and former Punjab Leader of Opposition H.S. Phoolka into the party, calling it a significant moment in the ongoing fight for justice and truth.

Chugh said Phoolka has fought tirelessly for over four decades for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and played a key role in ensuring punishment for hundreds of perpetrators. He said Phoolka’s joining the BJP reinforces the values of justice and commitment that he has upheld throughout his life.

Chugh said in a statement that when the tragic events of 1984 unfolded under the influence of the Gandhi-Nehru family, the BJP was the only political force that raised its voice for the victims, from the streets to Parliament.

He recalled the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Lal Khurana, under whom the issue was highlighted nationally, while a young Phoolka began his legal battle that has continued to this day.

After joining the BJP, Phoolka said he has been fighting for justice for the victims of 1984 for the last 40 years, and that the BJP has consistently supported him in this struggle.

He said his association with the Aam Aadmi Party was brief, and that upon understanding its functioning, he chose to part ways.

Phoolka added that the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab, rising crime, and the drug menace compelled him to return to politics, and that he believes the BJP is the best platform to serve Punjab.

Chugh further said Phoolka’s credibility and lifelong struggle make him an inspiring figure not just for the Sikh community but for the entire nation.

He said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’, Phoolka’s experience and commitment will strengthen the mission and contribute to meaningful change in Punjab.

On the issue of vandalism of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s statues and attacks on Dalit families in Punjab, Chugh expressed concern and termed the incidents as deeply unfortunate and condemnable.

He said that while the architect of the Constitution is being disrespected, Dalit homes are being burnt, raising serious questions about governance and accountability.

Chugh demanded immediate and strict action against the culprits and questioned the silence of the AAP government.

He asserted that such repeated incidents reflect administrative failure and that the BJP will continue to stand firmly for justice, dignity, and the protection of every section of society.
