Abhishek Banerjee invokes Sitalkuchi firing, urges voters to back Trinamool in Cooch Behar

Kolkata, April 1 (IANS) Trinamool Congress all-India general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, while campaigning for the Assembly elections, on Wednesday once again targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in strong terms over the controversial Sitalkuchi firing incident.

Addressing a public meeting at the Sitalkuchi Panchayat Samiti ground, he expressed confidence that the Trinamool Congress would win all nine Assembly seats in Cooch Behar district.

Candidates from the district were also present on the stage with him.

Addressing the gathering, Abhishek Banerjee sought to stir public sentiment over the death of four voters in Sitalkuchi in firing by central forces during the 2021 Assembly elections.

He said: "That incident has become a symbol of an attack on democracy. Innocent people had to lose their lives while exercising their right to vote. The lives of ordinary people have not been given importance in the politics of power. The Centre was responsible for this incident and it cannot evade the responsibility."

The Trinamool Congress leader also said that at that time, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee quickly reached the spot and stood by the affected families.

“This land is the land of fighting against injustice. People here have not learned to bow their heads. We know how to give a fitting reply to the injustice meted out to the common man,” he said.

Abhishek Banerjee also spoke confidently about the electoral prospects. He claimed that the Trinamool Congress' support base in Sitalkuchi is continuously increasing.

He said: "If you go to the booth on the day of voting and exercise your rights, then the BJP will have no existence here in the coming days. You have to ensure that the BJP does not get a single seat in Cooch Behar."

Thanking those who have strengthened the party organisation on the ground in Sitalkuchi despite what he termed the BJP’s politics, he claimed that in the next ten years, the BJP will not be found even with a microscope in any booth.
