The TMR, founded by Shri Hemant Sachdev, is a non-profit organisation affiliated with the Indian Army since 2016. It provides multiple teams of highly motivated &amp; qualified Avalanche Rescue professionals who are deployed in snow bound and difficult areas during the winter season. The teams have been instrumental in providing dedicated avalanche rescue &amp; training to Indian Army personnel in mountain craft. Shri Rajnath Singh was briefed on the activities of TMR during the event. The Raksha Mantri commended TMR for saving the lives of the Armed Forces personnel from threats like avalanches, besides raising awareness and imparting training to them. He termed TMR as a source of strength to the soldiers who are deployed in difficult areas and are exposed to various threats such as avalanches. He appreciated the fact that there has been no Army casualty in the locations where TMR is deployed. Kathmandu: A small airplane with 22 people on board flying on a popular tourist route was missing in Nepal's mountains on Sunday, an official said. The plane, which was on a 15-minute scheduled flight to the mountain town of Jomsom, lost contact with the airport tower shortly after takeoff.Police official Ramesh Thapa said there was no information on the Twin Otter aircraft and a search was underway. It has been raining in the area for the past few days but flights have been operating normally. Planes on that route fly between mountains before landing in a valley. It is a popular route with foreign hikers who trek on the mountain trails and also with Indian and Nepalese pilgrims who visit the revered Muktinath temple.—PTI

Kathmandu:&nbsp;Rescuers on Tuesday recovered the last body from the wreckage site of the Tara Air plane that crashed in Nepal’s mountainous Mustang district on Sunday, confirming the death of all 22 people on board, including four Indians.Authorities in Nepal resumed their search operation on Tuesday morning to retrieve the last body, a day after rescuers recovered 21 bodies from the wreckage site of the turboprop Twin Otter 9N-AET plane that crashed in the mountainous Mustang district amidst bad weather.“The last dead body has been recovered. Arranging to bring the remaining 12 dead bodies from the crash site to Kathmandu,” Nepal Army Spokesperson Brigadier General Narayan Silwal tweeted.“With the recovery of one more body by the search and rescue team today (Tuesday) morning, all 22 bodies have been collected from the accident site,” said Deochandra Lal Karna, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).“Ten dead bodies of the plane crash victims have been brought to the base camp from the mountain area, where the accident took place,” he said. Now it is confirmed that all 22 people, including four Indian nationals and three crew members, have been killed in the tragedy, he added.Tara Airlines has identified the four Indians as Ashok Kumar Tripathy, his wife Vaibhavi Bandekar (Tripathy) and their children Dhanush and Ritika. The family was based in Thane city near Mumbai.“Two bodies are still at the accident site. The bad weather condition has prevented rescue operations at the site. Kathmandhu: Teams led by the Nepal Army have collected over 33 tonnes of wastes, including human skeletons, from Mount Everest and three other peaks in a two-month-long cleaning campaign. The cleaning teams involving a total of 92 individuals started their work on April 5 on Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Kanchenjunga and Mount Manaslu, which attract climbers from around the world each year, reports Xinhua news agency. “Our teams collected 33,877 kg of wastes from the four mountains along with skeletons of two human bodies,” Himansu Khadka, a Nepal Army Brigadier General, said at a press conference.The cleaning teams had sorted out biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes, which weighed 7,227 kg and 26,650 kg respectively, and the skeletons recovered from the base camp of Kanchenjunga were handed over to Taplejung district police for identification and cremation. The Nepal Army has been leading the clean campaign since 2019, and a total of 27.6 tonnes of waste were collected in 2021 and 10 tonnes in 2019.The campaign was suspended in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “The cleaning is necessary to save the biodiversity of the mountains and lessen the impact of climate change,” Prabhu Ram Sharma, Chief of Army Staff, said at the press conference.—IANS

New Delhi: Growing up in a boarding school in the Himalayan foothills, Nachiket Chanchani, an art historian and associate professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, learnt a great deal about world history but precious little about the variegated past of the locale that he lived in, fuelling a hunger for more."Hikes and pilgrimages to peaks and temples, and my parents' memories of nearly two years they spent in a montane (a biogeographic zone of relatively moist cool upland slopes) hamlet in the early 1980s only increased his desire to learn more about the sacred structures and steles (stone markers)," Chanchani told IANS in an interview.Eventually, he returned to the Uttarakhand region to undertake his doctoral dissertation research and to write 'Mountain Temples &amp; Temple Mountains: Architecture, Religion, and Nature in the Central Himalayas' (Niyogi Books).Noting that the careful documenting and interpreting of stone temples and the sculptures enshrined therein "can give us a means of investigating the construction of sacrality", he said: "As part of my research, I created plans showing the orientation, scale, and disposition of parts of a selection of temples erected in the Central Himalayas as a basis for recognizing their morphologies.""Recognising the limitations of using an architectural terminology based on classical Graeco-Roman forms in describing Indian temples, I used a Sanskritic terminology where appropriate," he added. "Consideration of precise relationships between plans and elevations, external structures and internal systems, and original temple fabrics and later additions was also essential to my research."In writing a history of sacred centers, I also drew on texts in multiple genres and various Indian languages: architectural treatises, autobiographies, ballads, courtly poetry, land grants, liturgical manuals, praises of places, pilgrim records and hagiographies of sovereigns, saints, and traders, among others," Chanchani elaborated.He took care to record geographical features that influenced the locations of sacred centers and movements of peoples, also factoring into his analysis questions of access, tracing traditional bridle paths connecting settlements to another as well as roads leading in and out of the mountain ranges. This "diachronic (study over time) dimension" of his work led him to consider the complex and layered pasts of medieval sites "and to try and gauge the way in which cultural expression and political movements of subsequent centuries" had evolved.For instance, "the manner in which the story of the Bhima Sila boulder has been used to enhance the sacrality of Kedarnath - which it tumbled toward but spared the Kedarnath temple (during the devastating 2013 floods) - shows the close linkage between temple architecture and landscape," Chanchani said.The outcome is a seminal work that explores the historical process of the emergence of the Central Himalayas as a 'deva bhumi' as involving dynamic interactions among varied communities living in the northern mountains and on the plains that lie to their south. These developments, which occurred approximately between the 3rd century BCE and the 12th century CE "were crucial in transforming this frontier into a major locus of Hindu pilgrimage", Chanchani explained. The author demonstrates that through their forms, locations, interactions with the natural environment within the socio-cultural-political context, the stone complexes effectively evoked mythic worlds, embedding historical memories in the topography and thus altering the symbolic significance of these mountains. He also draws parallels between religious locations in places such as Gujarat and certain Himalayan temples, comparing the temple architecture and its related linkages.During his research, Chanchani also discovered "numerous, almost-unknown places where individual temples or clusters lie forlorn and abandoned.""Baijnath village, in the heart of Kumaon, is a case in point. Mounds await excavation. Hundreds of exquisite medieval sculptures once enshrined in shrines and around the village have been securely locked up in government storerooms for years. They need to be contextualized and displayed to help visitors understand its complex history."Temples at nearby Talihat, Bageshwar, Gadser, and Kot need to be conserved and accurate information about them needs to be elucidated in an accessible manner," Chanchani maintained.Across Uttarakhand, he said, the Directorate of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India and other state agencies need to collaborate with diverse stakeholders to showcase the region's rich heritage."More than twenty years have passed since the state's formation and Uttarakhand still does not have a state museum, let alone a museum or cultural interpretation center in every district. There is much work to do," he added.Chanchani and his wife, Jahnabi, have also co-authored a book on the 'Amarushataka and the Lives of Indian Love Poems' that focuses on a "sumptuous" seventeenth-century manuscript from Bundelkhand in the collection of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India).Redacted around the seventh century CE, the 'Amarushataka' is a collection of one hundred love poems written in Sanskrit that has been admired by South Asian literary communities for more than a millennium. The book introduces readers to the putative organizers of this anthology, the lenses through which these poems have been read, amended, and deployed, and the contexts through which they became standardized and authoritative."Our micro-study also considers visual recension and their roles in the vast transfers of cultural knowledge that transpired in the vernacular millennium. 'Amarushataka and the Lives of Indian Love Poems' proposes a new way to study South Asian literature and painting as media that jointly forged customs in their own right. In all these ways, this book provides a model for approaching the study of other beloved South Asian texts," Chanchani explained.What next? Chandigarh: A senior Punjab Police official unfurled India's Tricolour on the top of the world's tallest free standing mountain and the highest mountain of African continent in Tanzania -- Mount Kilimanjaro -- at the height of 5,895 metres, the High Commissioner of India in Tanzania announced on Tuesday.
Superintendent of Police Gurjot Singh Kaler told IANS over phone from Arusha city in Tanzania that he captured the peak on August 15 in his maiden attempt along with two other mountaineers.&nbsp;
His feat coincided with Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative of the Indian government to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of Independence.
"The Marangu route I, along with two other mountaineers, opted is quite tough as all other seven routes are. It's also known as Coca Cola route which means that it is a popular amongst the world's leading mountaineers to do the summit. The chances of summit are higher on this route," Kaler said.
Earlier, Kaler had done the summit of Mount Hurro of Machhadhar range in the Himalayas.
He's a trained mountaineer and was honoured with the award of best mountaineer by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in 2018 during his basic mountaineering course.
The police official said the Gilman point was the toughest to traverse because of the rough terrain of rocks and adverse weather.
"We started the expedition from Marangu Gate to Mandala Hut and then from Mandala Hut to Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut. From Kibo Hut to Gilman Point was the toughest part. Then Stella point and finally Uhuru Peak, the top point of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters, he said.
"Of course, the weather did pose a huge challenge, especially when we started to climb from Kibo Hut to Gilman point."
The ascent started at around midnight at 12 a.m. amidst chilly and windy weather and took three days to conquer the peak.
The top point of the peak, Uhuru Peak, in Swahili means freedom.
Tanzania got freedom from colonial British in December 1961 and this peak is named Uhuru, freedom.
Kaler, who is penning poems, songs and books to create social awakening, besides equipping people with the skills to become the cyber defenders, had also done a skydive from 15,000 feet at Nottingham in Britain to honour the Corona warriors in 2020.
Dedicating the achievement to the spirit of combating climate change and global warming, an elated young officer Kaler said the mission was to inspire the youth to fight against drugs and promotion of sports culture.
He said his aim was not to just unfurl the Tricolour but his personal glory.
"The mountains teach us how to respect mother nature and inculcate the qualities of patience, empathy and respect for nature. The aim of the mission was to spread awareness about the issues of global warming and climate change.
"The goal is to inspire the youth to overcome addiction to drugs and promote sports culture."
For Kaler, the journey is always more important than the destination.
"We have no planet B. Only earth. We need to respect nature and behave as responsible inhabitants of planet earth," he added.
Currently, Kaler, who has previously worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, is working as Joint Director (Vigilance), Punjab Police.
High Commissioner of India in Tanzania, Binaya Pradhan, officially tweeted about his achievement and congratulated him for bringing glory to the nation.

New York: US stocks fell sharply on Friday as investors continued to worry about even more rate hikes from the Federal Reserve that could land the US economy in a recession, the media reported.
The Dow was down 289 points, or 1 per cent, at the market open. The S&amp;P 500 fell 1.1 per cent and The Nasdaq composite was 1.1 per cent lower, CNN reported.
The Dow opened below 30,000 points, a level it briefly breached Thursday. If the Dow ends the day below 30,000, it would be the first time it closed below that barrier since June 17. And a somewhat more sizable plunge could land the index at on a two-year low on Friday.
Investors do not have many places to make money at the moment: In addition to sinking stocks, the bond market is also selling off, sending US Treasury yields soaring to 11-year highs in recent days.
The 10-year yield fell back a bit on Friday but remains near 3.7 per cent, and the 2-year yield is above 4.1 per cent.
That's a much better return than you can get with stocks these days, so high bond yields are adding pressure on the stock market, CNN reported.
Wall Street also remains concerned that the Fed's rate hiking plan could continue to increase borrowing costs, hurting the corporate profits that support their stock prices.
And if the Fed is serious about slowing the economy down to gain control of runaway inflation, a recession could cause some real pain for consumers who buy the products that publicly traded companies make.
There's much to worry about on Wall Street. CNN Business' Fear and Greed Index has fallen solidly into "Fear" mode in recent days and is nearing "Extreme Fear". Investors don't see much to smile about on the horizon.&nbsp;

Uttarkashi: The Uttarakhand Police on Wednesday released a list of 28 trainee mountaineers who went missing after being hit by a massive avalanche at a height of 17,000 feet at Draupadi Ka Danda-II peak in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district. The trainees were part of a 41-member team of mountaineers from the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and were returning along with their instructors after climbing the peak as part of their advanced training course when they were hit by the avalanche on Tuesday. The list of trainees includes those from West Bengal, Delhi, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam, Haryana, Gujarat, Hmachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Rescue operations, which had to be halted due to darkness and inclement weather, will be resumed on Wednesday. —PTI

Uttarkashi / Dehradun: In the view of the safety of the trekking and mountaineering teams in Uttarkashi, district magistrate Abhishek Ruhela on Thursday instructed to keep the activities here closed for the next three days.
Ruhela has banned these activities in Uttarkashi from October 6 (today) to October 8 (Saturday)
The DM's decision came after the meterorological department issued an alert for the rain and snow fall here. The India Meteorological Deaprtment on Monday predicted "Intense rainfall spell likely to commence over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh from 05th October for subsequent 2-3 days and heavy rainfall spell over most parts of east and northeast India during next 3-4 days."
Recently on Tuesday, a huge avalanche hit nearly 41 mountaineers and trainees of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) at Draupadi's Danda-II mountain peak in Uttarkashi.
Earlier in the day, a team of team of experts from Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir joined the rescue operation with the team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM).
The officials of the Indian Air Force had previously informed that they had deployed two helicopters from Sarsawa and Bareilly for the rescue operation with which several mountaineers were rescued from Base Camp located at about 12,000 ft to Matli helipad.
A day after four mountaineers lost their lives in the avalanche in Uttarkashi with several still missing, the survivors narrated their horrific experiences on Wednesday.
Deep Thakur, a trainee from Gujarat, who survived the accident while undergoing treatment at the district hospital, said that the avalanche came all of a sudden while he was climbing to Draupadi's Danda Peak for a summit at around 9.45 am, due to which he along with his companions fell into the crevasses about 60 feet deep, where he struggled between death and life for about 3 hours.
On Wednesday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also conducted an aerial inspection of the rescue and relief operation being carried out to find the mountaineering trainees who were hit by the avalanche and announced financial assistance to the kin of the deceased in the Uttarkashi and Pauri Garhwal tragedies which occurred on Tuesday.
"An amount of Rs 2 lakh for deaths, Rs one lakh for serious injuries, and Rs 50,000 for normal injuries will be given to all those affected by these two tragedies," an official informed. Besides the tragic incident of the avalanche in Uttarkashi, CM Dhami announced ex-gratia for the accident which claimed 32 lives and injured more than 20 people after a bus carrying a wedding procession fell into a gorge in the Birokhal area of Dhumakot in Pauri-Garhwal district on Tuesday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mountaineering, Trekking Banned Amid Predicted Bad Weather In Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi: The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) on Thursday said that a total of nine bodies which were trapped in the Uttarkashi avalanche have been recovered and retrieved till now, while 29 other trainees continue to remain stranded.
According to the NIM, the nine bodies retrieved today include four dead bodies that were already brought down on Tuesday (October 4) and Wednesday (October 5).
The update on recovered bodies came hours after a team of experts from Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir, High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), joined the operation with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and NIM to rescue mountaineers that were stranded on Draupadi's Danda-II mountain peak in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi after the avalanche hit them on Tuesday. However, more teams have been sent to the advance base camp from ITBP Matli in Uttarkashi.
An advance helicopter landing ground was also prepared at 16,000 ft and a trial landing was successfully conducted in the morning. According to ITBP PRO Vivek Pandey, the advance helipad has been made at high altitude and helicopters are out for rescue operations.
"The dead bodies are present at the base and some of them are expected to be brought down today itself," the ITBP PRO said adding that the measures are being hampered due to bad weather conditions but efforts to find the missing mountaineers is still underway.
On Wednesday, the survivors of the avalanche in Uttarkashi narrated their horrific experiences.
Deep Thakur, a trainee from Gujarat, who survived the accident while undergoing treatment at the district hospital, said that the avalanche came all of a sudden while he was climbing to Draupadi's Danda Peak for a summit at around 9.45 am, due to which he along with his companions fell into the crevasses about 60 feet deep, where he struggled between death and life for about 3 hours. Another survivor, Akash Lalvani, a trainee from Mumbai, told that he was only about 100 meters below the summit of Draupadi's Danda and the only plan was to summit the peak and get down after being photographed there, because the weather was also clear. But the sudden avalanche has left them with an unforgettable sorrow.
On Tuesday, about 41 trainees and instructors of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering were in the grip of Draupadi's avalanche in Danda of Dokrani glacier at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters. In view of the safety of the trekking and mountaineering teams in Uttarkashi, district magistrate Abhishek Ruhela on Thursday banned trekking activities here for the next three days. Ruhela has banned these activities in Uttarkashi from October 6 (today) to October 8 (Saturday) ahead of the India Meteorological Department's alert for intense rainfall in the state over the upcoming days.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The avalanche occurred at a height of 17,000 feet on Tuesday when a team of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) was returning after summiting Draupadi Ka Danda II peak. Three more bodies were recovered from the avalanche site late on Thursday evening, taking the total number of bodies retrieved so far to 19, the NIM said. While 17 of these bodies are of trainee mountaineers, two are of their instructors, it said. According to the NIM, 10 trainees are still missing. Army, IAF, NIM, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, High Altitude Warfare School (Jammu and Kashmir) and State Disaster Response Force along with the district administration are conducting the search operations that were launched hours after the avalanche struck on Tuesday. The mountaineers who went missing after the avalanche were part of a team selected by the NIM for an advanced training course.

Shillong: The body of Shillong mountaineer who went missing since the Uttarakhand avalanche, was recovered on Saturday, family sources said.
Tiklu Jyrwa, was among many other mountainers who went missing after the avalanche hit them on Droupadi Ka Danda in Uttarkashi on October 4.
Condoling the death of the mountaineer, state Chief Minister Conrad Sangma tweeted, "We are in touch with the family and are facilitating the transportation of his mortal remains to Shillong. My prayers for his family and loved ones during their hour of grief. May the departed Rest In Peace." According to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, a total of 26 bodies of mountaineering team, comprising two instructors and 24 trainees, have been recovered so far.
Search and rescue operation is in progress for the remaining three trainees, a bulletin of the institute said.&nbsp;

Uttarkashi: One more body of a mountaineer was retrieved from the site of an avalanche near the Draupadi ka Danda-2 peak in this Uttarakhand district on Saturday, despite bad weather conditions hampering the search efforts. With the recovery of the body, the death toll in the October 4 avalanche has gone up to 27, while two mountaineers are still missing, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) said.
Twenty-nine members of a team from the NIM had gone missing after the avalanche hit them on their way back from their summit expedition, according to the institute. Meanwhile, seven more bodies retrieved earlier were brought from the base camp to Uttarkashi to be handed over to the families of the victims.
Four of the bodies were handed over to the victims’ kin in Uttarkashi, while the bodies of three victims from Assam, Meghalaya and Uttar Pradesh were sent to the Himalayan Hospital, Jolly Grant under police escort for embalming before they are sent to their respective destinations, Uttarkashi Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal said.
The families of the victims, who were trainee mountaineers, except the one from Uttar Pradesh had come to Uttarkashi to collect the bodies.
As the trainee mountaineer from Uttar Pradesh was also an NCC cadet, members of the NCC’s Uttarkashi unit accompanied the body to the Himalayan Hospital, Patwai said. Four bodies were brought down from the base camp on Friday.
The search efforts for the missing mountaineers were hampered by heavy snowfall at the avalanche-hit site. With the weather conditions obstructing the search efforts, the relatives of the missing mountaineers, who have come to Uttarkashi from different parts of the country, are getting impatient. —PTI

Uttarkashi: Five more bodies were airlifted to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp in Uttarkashi's Matli on Monday.
According to the officials, so far, a total of 26 bodies have been airlifted from Droupadi's Danda II mountain peak which was hit by a huge avalanche on the morning of October 4.
"Five more bodies have been airlifted to ITBP camp in Matli, today. A total of 26 dead bodies have been airlifted from mount Draupadi Ka Danda-2 till now," the ITBP informed.
On Saturday, at least seven bodies were brought from the advanced base camp to the Matli helipad.
According to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), as many as 29 persons including two instructors and 27 trainees went missing when the avalanche hit Draupadi ka Danda mountain peak in Uttarakhand.
Personnel from various teams of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), the Air Force, the Army and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the High Altitude War School in Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir have been deployed in the rescue operations.
Mountaineers from the NIM participating in a training course were trapped in a glacier crevice on Tuesday morning after an avalanche hit the peak. The team was returning after summiting.
About 41 trainees and instructors of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering were hit by an avalanche. The institute said that the Advanced Mountaineering Course commenced on September 14 at NIM Uttarkashi.
The course moved to the mountain on September 23 with 41 people- 34 trainees and seven instructors and one nursing assistant. The group arrived at the Base Camp on September 25. As per the training programme, the course was conducted for high altitude training from October 2-October 4.
After summiting the 5,670 metre altitude Mt Draupadi ka Danda II the team was on its way back when the avalanche struck at around 8:45 am above camp 1 in which 34 trainees and 7 instructors got caught, according to a release by the NIM on October 4.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chennai: Father of the 20-year-old Sathyapriya, who was killed after a stalker pushed her before a moving train at St. Thomas Mount Railway station in Chennai, died of a heart attack.
Manickam (56) died at a private hospital in Chennai late on Thursday night. He was hospitalised after he collapsed on learning about the death of his daughter.
Early this morning, police arrested Satheesh (23), who pushed Sathyapriya before a moving train on Thursday. He was absconding after committing the heinous crime and though the onlookers had tried to catch hold of him, he had managed to escape.
The victim's mother is a head constable of police at Adambakkam police station, Chennai. Sathyapriya was a degree student at Jain College, Chennai, and was going to attend her classes when suddenly Satheesh reached the spot and the duo entered into a heated argument leading to the stalker pushing her before the moving train that was heading towards Tambaram from Egmore.
Police at St Thomas Mount police station told IANS that Satheesh who was an eighth standard drop out was the son of a retired police sub-inspector and was stalking Sathyapriya for the past couple of years. Last week, she filed a complaint against him at the local police station.&nbsp;

Washington: Mountain water is used for drinking and irrigation by nearly two billion people worldwide, but it is under threat owing to global warming. Mountainous areas are particularly affected by the repercussions of the climate crisis, with melting glaciers and snow increasing water scarcity in places like the Himalayas, Central Asia, and the Andes.
In a new paper, Imperial College London researchers outline how integrated water strategies that include scientists working directly with communities on the ground could help them drive their own climate adaptation and boost water security.
Local communities have often developed ingenious local solutions such as water sowing and harvesting practices, wetland conservation, and interconnected storage reservoirs. A better scientific evidence base can help integrating these practices and river basin management plans, to offset some of the negative impacts of climate change.
At present, scientists monitor glacier melt and river flows, using the data to produce predictive models of future hydrological scenarios. However this method leaves huge data gaps on how communities use glacier and snow water in combination with other water sources like hillslopes, wetlands, and groundwater. The solution, the researchers say, could be to incorporate more information on water management practices, using multi-generational knowledge from people who live in mountain regions.
Senior author Professor Wouter Buytaert of Imperial's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who developed the original research concept for this work, said: "The picture is especially difficult to construct because of the complexity of mountain landscapes, the diversity of local livelihood strategies, and the lack of scientific awareness and understanding of these practices.
"Our study highlights the need for scientists to work directly on the ground with communities. This is the only way we can gain a thorough understanding of the local water security context, and it is essential to uncover local and scientific knowledge that can support regional water management decisions and adaptation strategies."
Water security
The impacts of climate change, such as glacier shrinkage, ice avalanches, and glacial lake outburst floods are becoming more commonplace as the climate changes. These impacts present serious and life-threatening implications for those who depend on mountain water supply.
However, the study found that current information on precisely how these communities will be affected by climate change is limited. The researchers say that working directly with mountain communities can combine local knowledge and scientific inquiry to drive effective adaptations to their changing homes.
Lead author Dr Fabian Drenkhan, who undertook the work at Imperial's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Grantham Institute said: "Water security in mountain regions relies on a broader understanding of the complex interplay between water supply and demand. These links go far beyond just the scientific study of glacier melt."
The study which includes researchers from Imperial, University of Birmingham, University of Zurich, the British Geological Survey and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru along with local partners, calls for a fundamental rethink of the methods and technologies used to assess current water availability and model future scenarios.
Adaptation is key
Low uptake of new monitoring technologies and approaches, particularly in lower income countries with limited institutional capacities, is further hampering our understanding of high-altitude, data-sparse regions. These make it difficult to create models and solutions that can be scaled up across watersheds with accuracy.
Co-author Professor David Hannah, UNESCO Chair in Water Sciences at the University of Birmingham, said: "In mountains, there are complex interconnections between the cryosphere and other water sources, as well as with humans. We need to identify the gaps in our understanding and rethink strategies for water security in the context of climate change adaptation and shifting human needs."
Dr Drenkhan, who now works at Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, said: "The future is likely to lead to a more variable water supply and growing water demand, which is a real threat to water security in many mountain regions. Our incomplete picture of future water availability and security is keeping us from designing and implementing the best possible climate adaptations. We urgently need a holistic perspective to guide robust, locally tailored adaptations to global heating." —ANI
