Punjab: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been sentenced to one-year jail term in a road-rage case, has been lodged in Barrack No 10 at the central jail in Patiala and didn't have dinner on the first night, sources said on Saturday. Sidhu has been lodged in the barrack with four other prisoners, said the sources.He didn't have dinner as he had already taken his meal, they said, adding that the former state Congress chief is prisoner number 1,37,683. The 58-year-old former cricketer on Friday had&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rediff.com/news/report/sidhu-seeks-time-in-sc-to-surrender-after-jail-term/20220520.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(71, 123, 196);">surrendered before a court</a>&nbsp;in Patiala and later sent to the Patiala Central Jail. He was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1988 road-rage case.As Sidhu has to undergo rigorous imprisonment, he will also have to work in the prison. Another high-profile prisoner lodged in jail here in connection with a drug case is Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who had contested against Sidhu from Amritsar East. Sidhu and Majithia had both lost the elections to Aam Aadmi Party's Jeevan Jyot Kaur. The SC had on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the 34-year-old case, saying any undue sympathy in imposing an inadequate sentence would do more harm to the justice system and undermine the public confidence in the efficacy of law. A 65-year-old man, Gurnam Singh, had died in the incident. When reporters sought Sidhu's reaction to the verdict on Thursday, he had declined to comment. However, he had later tweeted to say he 'will submit to the majesty of the law'. Though the apex court had in May 2018 held Sidhu guilty of the offence of 'voluntarily causing hurt' to the man, it had spared him a jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000. Gurnam Singh's family had sought a review of the judgment, which was allowed by the SC. Sidhu, a former BJP MP, had switched over to the Congress ahead of the 2017 assembly polls. Sidhu began his political innings in 2004, contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from Amritsar, where he shifted his base from Patiala. He defeated Congress heavyweight R L Bhatia. The former cricketer's relationship with the Badal family soured even though the Shiromani Akali Dal was a BJP ally then. And then he had problems with the BJP after the party fielded Arun Jaitley from Amritsar in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Though he was accommodated in the Rajya Sabha later, the maverick politician quit the party to join the Congress.—PTI

The duo, identified as Abhijeet and Rakesh, were reportedly being taken to Delhi for treatment in a police vehicle when they fled from near Subhash Chowk. Sources said the duo belong to the Kala Jatheri gang, a claim denied by police.ACP Preet Pal Singh Sangwan said they are questioning the policemen who accompanied them. "We cannot reveal much as of now but are questioning policemen," he said."As if now, we cannot rule out their connivance," said the ACP. CP Kala Ramachandran said," Two men escaped. A pall of gloom descended on the zoo after Jason's death.Officials and employees bid farewell to Jason by offering flowers and garlands on the carcass. Female chimpanzee, Nikita, also looked sad on the death of her partner.Jason was 35 and was brought to Lucknow in 2007 as part of an animal exchange programme with Mysore zoo.A female giraffe, Khushi, a male zebra and a pair of saras cranes were sent from Lucknow to Mysore in return. On Tuesday, the keepers found that Jason inactive and was not taking food. The chimpanzee was checked by veterinarians who found it unwell and informed the zoo director. The veterinarians contacted the specialists at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, for advice.A letter was sent to call experts to provide treatment, monitoring and intensive care to Jason. However, the chimpanzee fell unconscious in its enclosure later at nightIt was shifted to the veterinary hospital of Lucknow Zoo where it died. The organs have been sent to IVRI for detailed investigation. —IANS

Lucknow (The Hawk): The Uttar Pradesh administration has made the decision to further up monitoring of VVIP inmates housed in the state jails as new footage of incarcerated Delhi minister Satyendra Jain in Tihar jail are released on a regular basis.
A 24-hour video surveillance has reportedly been increased in all 72 of the state's jails and sub-jails, according to government sources.
These jails house infamous criminals, terror suspects, a former minister, and other VVIPs. They include Naini Central Jail, Lucknow Jail, Gautam Buddha Nagar Jail, and other jails.
Prison staff have been instructed to only permit things listed in the Jail Manual inside jails.
According to representatives from the headquarters of the prison administration and reform services, instructions have been sent to step up monitoring in all state institutions.
"Prison authorities have been directed to maintain a list of politicians, bureaucrats, mafias, infamous criminals, and terror suspects incarcerated in their jails and strengthen watch on their actions to ensure that no special facility is offered to them," the government spokesman added.
Jails in the U.P. have a history of infamous inmate behaviour.
Examples of criminals carrying on their activities while incarcerated include the murder of convicted gangster Munna Bajrangi by another gangster Sunil Rathi in July 2018 and the shooting death of three gang members in Chitrakoot jail in May 2021.
In April 2019, Atiq Ahmad's goons kidnapped a businessman and took him to the Deoria jail, where they tortured him.
In addition, videos of prisoners having fun, drinking alcohol, and placing extortion calls from within jails have already gone viral.
According to jailer Rajendra Singh, the district jail in Lucknow, which holds about 3,500 inmates, is home to a number of VVIPs, including former cabinet minister Gayatri Prajapati, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad's son Umar, gangster Sanjeev Maheshwari, police personnel accused in numerous cases, over 24 activists for the Popular Front of India, and five people accused of supporting terrorism in Pakistan.
Similar to this, there are roughly 4,300 inmates at Naini Central Jail, including suspected terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir and other regions of the nation, naxals, mafias, gangsters, deranged serial killers, etc.
Additionally, Naini Central Jail is where numerous political figures are being held in connection with various charges. Former Phulpur MP Kapil Muni Karwaria and his younger brother Surajbhan Karwaria, a former MLC, are on the list. Atul Rai, a Ghosi MP, and Angad Yadav, a former minister, are also detained in this facility.
According to the Jail Manual, security measures are being taken to protect inmates, according to R.K. Singh, jailor at Naini Central Jail. A verifiable list of these convicts is kept up to date. They are being housed in separate barracks by the administration.
Abbas Ansari (MLA), the son of Mukhtar Ansari, is detained in Chitrakoot Jail for security reasons.

Yogi government increases security in UP jails

Muzaffarnagar (The Hawk): Petty disputes, problems and other issues troubling jail inmates in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, will now be resolved by groups of prisoners themselves.Muzaffarnagar Jail superintendent, Sitaram Sharma, said, “We have set up six committees of prisoners. These committees will oversee various activities of the inmates, including health, education, entertainment, physical fitness, discipline, and providing legal advice or counselling.”
He added that weekly Chaupals, supervised by jail officials, are held in the jail campus where inmates can discuss their issues and seek help.
With the help of the education department of Muzaffarnagar, one of the six committees has been assigned to the development of skills and education of the prisoners, including illiterate ones. They are preparing profiles and lists of prisoners to identify those who can benefit from skill development programmes with the goal of preparing the inmates for reintegration into mainstream society.
Another committee has been set up for cleanliness and hygiene within the jail premises to create a better environment for all inmates.
Committee members will also work towards acquainting incoming prisoners with jail rules and discipline to help them receive counselling in a better way.
Inmates with knowledge of the law have been made part of the Legal Aid Committee whose objective is to assist fellow prisoners with legal matters, such as court appearances, fines, bail, sureties, and general legal information.
The committees also aim to create a better atmosphere in jail and prevent clashes among inmates.&nbsp;

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been remanded to judicial custody in the liquor policy case, started Wednesday morning by sweeping his prison cell with a broom at Delhi's Tihar Jail, sources said. Sources said that all under-trial prisoners at Tihar Jail have to clean their cells themselves.
According to Tihar sources, Kejriwal is absolutely healthy and jail doctors have not expressed any such concerns. Reportedly Aam Aadmi Party sources alleged that Kejriwal had lost a lot of weight since his arrest. According to sources in Tihar jail, Kejriwal has also asked for a chair from the jail administration. On April 1, a Delhi court remanded the Delhi Chief Minister to 15-day judicial custody in the excise policy case and sent him to Tihar Jail till April 15.
The court has permitted him to have home-cooked meals and carry with him the prescribed medications for his diabetes. According to the sources, the Delhi Chief Minister lodged in Jail Number 2 of the high security Tihar Jail was given an isolation room and was provided with a table and a chair to keep three books, as per the court's order.
"Kejriwal slept on his own bed, which was different from the regular one provided by the jail authority. Since the area was small, he could have faced difficulty but didn't complain about it," the sources in the Tihar jail said on Tuesday. They further said that officials saw him keeping his devices like a sugar sensor and glucometer, isabgol, glucose, and toffees on his table. The court had directed jail authorites to allow Kejriwal to carry these items to be used in case of sudden dip in his sugar levels.
On Tuesday, the Delhi Chief Minister woke up early and was served breakfast and tea at 6:40 am. "After an early lunch, he will have to go back to his cell at 12 noon and have to stay there till 3 pm," the sources said. Kejriwal was taken to jail on Monday afternoon after the conclusion of his Directorate of Enforcement custodial remand. The ED cast the Delhi Chief Minister as the "kingpin" in the alleged scam, and told the court the AAP leader had given "evasive replies" and concealed information relevant to the investigation. In the year 2014 too the AAP leader was lodged in Tihar jail after he refused to furnish a bail amount of Rs 10,000 in a defamation case filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. Other AAP leaders currently lodged in Tihar are Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain. Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, who is also former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter is also lodged in Tihar jail.
