Leh: Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande on Monday said China's intention has been to keep 'alive' the boundary question with India though it remains the 'basic' issue between the two countries even as he asserted that the Army's aim was to restore the status quo ante prior to April 2020 in eastern Ladakh.Gen Pande also said that Indian troops are adequately deployed along the Line of Actual Control to deal with any situation and that guidance has been given to them to "remain firm and resolute" in their tasks.While referring to the eastern Ladakh border standoff, the Army chief said the Indian Army's aim is to re-establish the "trust and tranquillity" between the two sides but asserted that "it cannot be a one-way affair.""The basic issue remains the resolution of the border. What we see is that China's intent has been to keep the boundary issue alive," he said about the overall boundary question between the two countries."What we need as a country is a 'whole of nation' approach and in the military domain, this is to prevent and counter any attempt to alter the status quo at the LAC," he told a select group of journalists.The comments by Gen Pande, who took charge as the Army chief on April 30, came as the lingering border standoff in eastern Ladakh completed two years on May 4."We have a robust posture and adequate forces available to deal with any situation," he said while listing the Army's decision to "rebalance" and "reorient" along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the last two years."Our troops continue to hold important positions along the LAC...As far as the situation is concerned, guidance given to the troops is to remain firm and resolute in the task they are undertaking and prevent attempts to change the status quo," Gen Pande said.He also referred to military and diplomatic talks between India and China to resolve the eastern Ladakh standoff.Gen Pande said the diplomatic and military talks between the two sides resulted in the disengagement of troops in the north and south banks of Pangong Tso, Gogra and Patrolling Point 14 (Galwan), adding, "we hope to find resolution through dialogue in remaining areas.""Our aim is to restore status quo ante prior to April 2020," he said.The eastern Ladakh faceoff began on May 4-5 in 2020. We will continue to engage China in talks for resolving the remaining areas," the Army chief said.The Army chief said his focus has been to increase the use of technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in border areas besides ensuring adequate infrastructure and logistics.India and China have held 15 rounds of military talks so far to resolve the eastern Ladakh row.As a result of the talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year on the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area.India has been consistently maintaining that peace and tranquillity along the LAC were key for the overall development of the bilateral ties.The eastern Ladakh border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas.Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control in the sensitive sector—PTI

Srinagar: A baby girl, who was declared dead soon after being born at a Ramban hospital but found alive an hour after her burial, died at a medical facility in&nbsp;Srinagar on Wednesday, officials said. Medical Superintendent of the government-run G B Pant Children Hospital Dr Nazir Hussain Choudhary said the baby died at 6.30 am at the neonatal intensive care unit.She was found alive after her family had been forced to dig up her grave when local people in Hollan village objected to her burial at their graveyard. The baby was admitted to the Srinagar hospital on Monday soon after she was found breathing, Choudhary "She was a premature baby, had low birth weight with respiratory distress and was admitted in the ICU at the hospital," he said.The baby belonged to Basharat Ahmad Gujjar and Shameema Begum, who had a normal delivery on Monday morning at the sub-district hospital in Banihal, Jammu.The baby was declared dead after being born, following which her family decided to bury her at Hollan village.However, when they were returning to the hospital, local people objected to the burial, forcing the family to dig out the grave nearly an hour later.When the baby was taken out of the grave, she was found to be alive, and the family rushed her to the medical facility, from where she was referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment.The incident sparked protests by the family and others inside the hospital complex against the 'non-professional attitude of the doctors and the hospital staff'.Banihal Block Medical Officer Dr Rabia Khan said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident."We have already placed a junior staff nurse and sweeper working in the gynaecology section under suspension with immediate effect, pending an inquiry," she said.Station House Officer of Banihal police station Muneer Ahmad Khan said an open FIR under relevant sections of the law has already been registered in connection with the incident."We are waiting for the outcome of the investigation ordered by the government and will act accordingly," he said.The Directorate of Health Services, Jammu, had on Tuesday constituted a four-member panel to probe a complaint against the Banihal community health centre where the newborn was allegedly wrongly declared dead just after her birth.Headed by Sanjay Turkey, Assistant Director (Schemes), DHS Jammu, the committee has been asked to submit its report within two days.—PTI

Chennai (The Hawk): In Tamil Nadu's Tindivanam forest division, an ornithological conservation centre will be built at the Agaram Reserve Forest next to the Kaliveli bird sanctuary.
The Center is being established by the state's forest department.
The 670 sqkm Kaliveli bird sanctuary is dispersed around Kaliveli Lake. One of the larger wetlands on the Coromandel coast is this one.
According to estimates from the Indian Bird Conservation Network and Birdlife International, the Kaliveli marsh sustains more than 20,000 birds annually.
There will be a visitor's area and an office space at the conservation centre. The tourist area will have a well-projected tunnel-shaped entry wall and a centre for bird interpretation.
A bird model modelled on the habitats and environments found in the Kaliveli Bird Sanctuary will also be housed at the facility.
Officials from the forest department claim that the centre will aid in raising knowledge of migratory birds, their evolution, and the value of and need for bird protection.
Different bird species' migratory flyways will be shown in the centre, together with digital data about their country of origin and flight route interruptions. At the centre, computerised displays of various birds' nests, beaks, and feet will also be available.
A reference library with research resources on migrating birds, their history, the seasons in which they arrive on other continents, and other information is also planned for the Ornithological Conservation Centre. This is to promote a greater understanding of nature among students and the general public who are interested in the environment.
Along with the Ornithological Center, a bird rehabilitation facility is also being considered.
According to sources in the forest department, the Comprehensive Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) plan has approved a first payment of Rs 1 crore.
There won't be a funding deficit for the Center, according to sources in the Tamil Nadu forest department, according to IANS.

She told the Boston-based WHDH TV 7NEWS news channel: "'Of course, it's about time!' was my reaction. I gloat when he's potty trained and when he's walking, but this is something that everyone will know about. It makes me very pleased."
While Lisa was not startled by the 'Avengers: Endgame' actor's victory, she did disclose that her son was.
"He's always amazed at his own success, and he's always amazed at what people think of him," she said.
And, while she is pleased of Chris' new status, she believes his pals will use it to mock him.
"(His pals) will undoubtedly give him trouble about it, but - they're quite amusing," she remarked.
When his victory was revealed, Evans stated that his mother would be "overjoyed."
He stated: "My mother will be overjoyed. She is proud of everything I do, but this is something she is especially pleased of."
The 'Knives Out' star stated earlier this week that now that he is in his 40s, he needs to take better care of himself.
He stated: "I used to be able to eat anything I wanted and perform a couple of workouts per week and be fine.
"That is no longer the case. I wear it if I've had two beers. I haven't had to play a Captain America role in a long time, so things like diet and fitness routine haven't been on my mind. But as you become older, things click and hurt, it's harder to wake up, you have less energy...

Washington: Discovering a new species is always exciting, but so is finding one alive that everyone assumed had been lost to the passage of time. A small clam, previously known only from fossils, has recently been found living at Naples Point, near Santa Barbara.
"It's not all that common to find alive a species first known from the fossil record, especially in a region as well-studied as Southern California," said co-author Jeff Goddard, a research associate at UC Santa Barbara's Marine Science Institute. "Ours doesn't go back anywhere near as far as the famous Coelacanth or the deep-water mollusk Neopilina galatheae -- representing an entire class of animals thought to have disappeared 400 million years ago -- but it does go back to the time of all those wondrous animals captured by the La Brea Tar Pits."
On an afternoon low tide in November 2018, Goddard was turning over rocks searching for nudibranch sea slugs at Naples Point, when a pair of small, translucent bivalves caught his eye. "Their shells were only 10 millimeters long," he said. "But when they extended and started waving about a bright white-striped foot longer than their shell, I realized I had never seen this species before." This surprised Goddard, who has spent decades in California's intertidal habitats, including many years specifically at Naples Point. He immediately stopped what he was doing to take close-up photos of the intriguing animals.
With quality images in hand, Goddard decided not to collect the animals, which appeared to be rare. After pinning down their taxonomic family, he sent the images to Paul Valentich-Scott, curator emeritus of malacology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. "I was surprised and intrigued," Valentich-Scott recalled. "I know this family of bivalves (Galeommatidae) very well along the coast of the Americas. This was something I'd never seen before."
He mentioned a few possibilities to Goddard, but said he'd need to see the animal in-person to make a proper assessment. So, Goddard returned to Naples Point to claim his clam. But after two hours combing just a few square meters, he still hadn't caught sight of his prize. The species would continue to elude him many more times.
Nine trips later, in March 2019, and nearly ready to give up for good, Goddard turned over yet another rock and saw the needle in the haystack: A single specimen, next to a couple of small white nudibranchs and a large chiton. Valentich-Scott would get his specimen at last, and the pair could finally set to work on identification.
Valentich-Scott was even more surprised once he got his hands on the shell. He knew it belonged to a genus with one member in the Santa Barbara region, but this shell didn't match any of them. It raised the exciting possibility that they had found a new species.
"This really started 'the hunt' for me," Valentich-Scott said. "When I suspect something is a new species, I need to track back through all of the scientific literature from 1758 to the present. It can be a daunting task, but with experience it can go pretty quickly."
The two researchers decided to check out an intriguing reference to a fossil species. They tracked down illustrations of the bivalve Bornia cooki from the paper describing the species in 1937. It appeared to match the modern specimen. If confirmed, this would mean that Goddard had found not a new species, but a sort of living fossil. It is worth noting that the scientist who described the species, George Willett, estimated he had excavated and examined perhaps 1 million fossil specimens from the same location, the Baldwin Hills in Los Angeles. That said, he never found B. cooki himself. Rather, he named it after Edna Cook, a Baldwin Hills collector who had found the only two specimens known.
Valentich-Scott requested Willett's original specimen (now classified as Cymatioa cooki) from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This object, called the "type specimen," serves to define the species, so it's the ultimate arbiter of the clam's identification.
Meanwhile, Goddard found another specimen at Naples Point -- a single empty shell in the sand underneath a boulder. After carefully comparing the specimens from Naples Point with Willett's fossil, Valentich-Scott concluded they were the same species. "It was pretty remarkable," he recalled.
Small size and cryptic habitat notwithstanding, all of this begs the question of how the clam eluded detection for so long. "There is such a long history of shell-collecting and malacology in Southern California -- including folks interested in the harder to find micro-mollusks -- that it's hard to believe no one found even the shells of our little cutie," Goddard said.
He suspects the clams may have arrived here on currents as planktonic larvae, carried up from the south during marine heatwaves from 2014 through 2016. These enabled many marine species to extend their distributions northward, including several documented specifically at Naples Point. Depending on the animal's growth rate and longevity, this could explain why no one had noticed C. cooki at the site prior to 2018, including Goddard, who has worked on nudibranchs at Naples Point since 2002.
"The Pacific coast of Baja California has broad intertidal boulder fields that stretch literally for miles," Goddard said, "and I suspect that down there Cymatioa cooki is probably living in close association with animals burrowing beneath those boulders. —ANI

Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh (The Hawk): A woman who had supposedly been abducted and killed seven years prior has recently been discovered alive and residing 40 km away in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras with her husband and two children, according to authorities.
In prison, her suspected killer is still alive.
The incident was discovered after the accused's mother carried out her own inquiry and located the woman.
The girl, who is now 22 years old, was brought to Aligarh by a police team from Hathras so that she could give a magistrate her statement.
The woman's DNA samples will be gathered to confirm her identification, according to the police, on the court's directive.
The case began on February 17, 2015, when the girl—at the time a class 10 student—is said to have vanished. The Gonda police station received a complaint from her parents.
"A girl's body was found in Agra a few days later. Because of the clothes on the body, the girl's father went there and determined that it was his lost daughter. In Aligarh, a FIR was filed against the girl's neighbour on suspicion of kidnapping and murder. He was taken into custody and jailed "police tacked on
When he was detained, the suspect was a student who was 18 years old. A few years later, he was granted bail and released. However, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him and he was taken back to jail since he was unable to appear in court.
"I've always thought that my son was wrongly accused of the crime. I would enquire of everybody I knew if they had seen the missing girl. Some didn't believe me, while others did. I went up to others and displayed the girl's photograph, which was subsequently passed around in various circles "The mother of the accused alleged.
"A guruji who was speaking in Vrindavan a few days prior recognised the girl who had travelled there to attend the event. Further investigation discovered she was residing in Hathras with her family "Added she.
The mother stated, "I went to the police over the weekend and told them where she was. I'm hoping the authorities will act quickly so that my son can regain his freedom."
Raghvender Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Iglas), said: "The girl has been shown before a local court, and with the judge's approval, we have begun the process of using DNA profiling to determine who she is. On the basis of the report, additional action will be taken."
