Surat: A fire broke out at a textile mill in Surat on Saturday night. The incident took place in the Pandesara area of Surat around 10 pm on Saturday.Following the incident, fire engines rushed to the spot. It took 3-4 hours to put the fire under control. So far no casualties have been reported. Preliminary reports suggested a short circuit as the cause of the fire. "15-20 firefighters reached the spot. No casualties have been reported yet," fire officer Falgun Kumar told ANI. Further details are awaited.—ANI

Ahmedabad : The Meteorological Department has forecast extremely very heavy rains in three districts of south Gujarat -- Valsad, Navsari and Surat and issued an orange alert for the same, while Gir Somnath, Porbandar, and some other districts of Saurashtra and Bharuch district are likely to receive heavy rainfall in next three to four days.Met Department Director Manorama Mohanty speaking to media persons said low pressure developed in the region is likely to bring extremely heavy rains in south Gujarat and people are advised not to venture out unnecessarily, or move to a safe place if they are living in low lying areas.North Gujarat will receive normal rains, the Met department said. In the first 30 days of monsoon, the state has received 113 mm of rain, a 13 per cent deficit.Heavy rain also lashed some pockets of Gir Somnath district in Saurashtra. Water logging complaints have been received from low lying areas, but so far the need to rescue any one or move people to safer place was not felt, said R.G. Gohil, District Collector, Gir Somnath.According to the State Emergency Centre data, Kodinar Taluka received 46 mm rains in two hours on Wednesday, Mangrol taluka 43 mm, Kalyanpur 33 mm, Satlasana 27 mm and Sutrapada 19 mm.In the last 24 hours -- from Tuesday 8 a.m. to Wednesday 8 a.m. -- Sutrapada Taluka received 168 mm, Kodinar 159 mm, Kalyanpur 153 mm, Kadana 145 mm, Mangrol 119 mm, Dwarka 116 mm, Olpad 109 mm, Ranavav 104 mm, Himatnagar 95 mm and rest 210 Taluka received from one mm and more rains.On Wednesday morning, Revenue Minister Rajendra Trivedi chaired a meeting of district collectors and officers at the State Emergency Centre. Later he told media persons that situation is under control. NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are deployed at important locations to meet any emergency, collectors are asked to keep safe places ready for last moment evacuations from flood affected or low lying areas, he said. The conclave, organised in Surat, Gujarat, is witnessing participation of thousands of farmers and all other stakeholders who have made adoption of Natural farming in Surat a success story. The conclave was also attended by the Governor and Chief Minister Gujarat.Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that today’s programme is an indication of how Gujarat is leading the country’s resolution of achieving the goals of the Amrit Kaal. “Success of Surat in connecting 75 farmers in every panchayat with natural farming is going to become an example for the entire country”, the Prime Minister said. He highlighted the role of Sarpanches and congratulated the farmers for moving ahead in the direction of a natural way of farming.The Prime Minister said “In connection with 75 years of independence, the country has started working on many goals which will become the basis for major changes in the times to come. The basis of progress and speed of the country is the spirit of&nbsp;‘Sabka Prayas’, which is leading this development journey of ours.” That is why, he said that Gram Panchayats have been given a key role in the welfare projects for the poor and the deprived.He said that local bodies played a concerted role in selecting 75 farmers from every panchayat and hand-holded them with training and other resources. This has led to a situation where more than 40 thousand farmers in 550 panchayats have become involved in natural farming. This is a great beginning and is very encouraging. He also expressed confidence that the beginning of 75 farmers taking up natural farming in every panchayat will soon increase manifold as demand for this chemical-free natural product is bound to increase. .As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Prime Minister in his address at Gujarat Panchayat Mahasammelan in March, 2022 had exhorted at least 75 farmers in each village to adopt the Natural way of farming. Guided by this vision of Prime Minister, Surat District undertook a concerted and coordinated effort to sensitise and motivate different stakeholders and institutions like farmer groups, elected representatives, talathis, Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs),&nbsp;Cooperatives, Banks etc, in the district to help farmers in adoption of Natural Farming. Consequently, at least 75 farmers were identified in each Gram Panchayat and were motivated and trained to undertake Natural Farming. 8 youths booked for rioting & assaulting VHP leader in Surat

Mangaluru:&nbsp;Six people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a youth belonging to a minority community in Surathkal here, police said.The murder that took place on July 28 close on the heels of BJP Yuva Morcha Member Praveen Nettaru's killing in Bellare, had sent shockwaves across the district. The arrested persons are of Surathkal. Ajith Crasta, the owner of the car used by the accused was first detained and questioned and based on the information provided by him, the cops zeroed in on the accused. The arrests were made near Udyavar this morning. City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar, who gave details, said all the six accused were directly involved in the murder. Initially, they had discussions on who their target should be and considered seven persons and finally chose to target Fazil. The exact reason behind the murder is yet to be known, he said. The commissioner said the police will take the accused to custody for further interrogation.—PTI

Sant Kabir Nagar (Uttar Pradesh): A man has been arrested for setting ablaze a woman, Surati Devi, 65, and her 12-year-old granddaughter under Khalilabad police station limits in Sant Kabir Nagar district.
The incident took place on Friday and both the victims succumbed to burn injuries at a Gorakhpur hospital.
The accused suspected that his wife had eloped with Surati Devi's son, the police said.
The police also said they arrested the accused Ravindra Gupta who, along with his wife Maya's brother Bindeshwari and his nephew Vicky, poured five litres of petrol on Surati Devi and her granddaughter when they were sleeping in an open veranda outside their home.
Ravindra and Bindeshwari suspected that Maya, who was missing along with her five-year-old son since August 11, had eloped with Surati Dev's son Prithvi.
In a video statement, Sant Kabir Nagar additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Kumar Singh-I informed the media that Maya's parents and other family members lived in the Kolhualakda village under the Khalilabad police station limits and Surati Devi and her granddaughter also resided in the same village.
The ASP said Ravindra and Bindeshwari hatched the conspiracy over a WhatsApp call.
He said Bindheshwari, along with his nephew Vicky, reached Sant Kabir Nagar and stayed in a hotel instead of going to his village while Ravindra arrived there on a motorcycle from Barabanki.
He said they got the motorcycle fuelled at a petrol pump nearby and later took out the petrol in a jerry can. Thereafter, they reached Surati's house and set her and her granddaughter ablaze.
He said efforts were on to track down Bindeshwari and Vicky.
The ASP said the arrested accused has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 304 for culpable homicide, 436 for causing mischief using explosive or inflammable material and 506 for criminal intimidation.&nbsp;

The Crime Branch police station officer said that on Wednesday that the local police was informed that several persons came in Bolero car and abandoned a man's body on the service road near Aai Mata circle in Puna area.&nbsp;The local police and crime branch official reached the spot and during investigation they found from the CCTV footage and have arrested the three accused identified as elder son Sunil Devipujak, father Chandu Devipujak and a minor.During the primary questioning, Chandu's minor son told police that on Tuesday evening that he was selling apples when a man identified as Mahipal Aahir bought apples from him, after which they had an argument over the payment.In a fit of rage, the minor beat Aahir on his head with wood after which the latter fell on the ground and was bleeding,The accused trio took the victim to a private hospital where the doctor refused to admit the latter, saying it is a criminal case and inform the police or take the victim to a government hospital.Fearing a police case, Chandu and his elder son Sunil decided to abandon Aahir's body on the road.The minor has been arrested under the Juvenile Justice Act and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, the Crime branch officer added.&nbsp;—IANS

Surat (The Hawk): In this district of Gujrat, a truck driver who was 25 years old was taken into custody after he was observed in the act of raping a young girl who was only two years old.
The POCSO and IPC sections for rape have been used by the police in their investigation of him.
IANS was told by an officer at the Vesu Police Station that on Monday evening, the police control room received a call reporting that a truck driver had taken a toddler from a slum area that was located under the Anuvrat Dwar flyover.
Following instructions from the control room, all of the PCR vehicles in the area immediately began searching for the truck. A vehicle with the licence plate number GJ-05- BT-4300 was successfully pursued by one PCR van and apprehended by it.
The infant was found to be bleeding heavily as the cops were searching the truck. She was taken directly for treatment at the local government hospital after being found unconscious. Shobhdeep Balkisan, who was recognised as the driver, was taken into custody and taken to have checked out medically.
The officer stated that the accused person will be brought before the court, where a request for remand would be made by the police.

According to a report, municipal corporations must enhance forestation in places like Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Surat while simultaneously reining in the use of chemicals.
According to a report published earlier this year, the Gujarat government has created an action plan for combating climate change for the districts of Ahmedabad and Rajkot in collaboration with the Vasudha Foundation and other organisations.
According to the report's conclusions, "Since 2005, emissions from the energy sector have climbed by 71.32 percent, those from the water sector have increased by 7.06 percent, and emissions from the greenhouse gas sector have increased by 78%. By 2030, emissions are anticipated to increase by 96% under the status quo."
Rini Dutt, the primary author of the action plan study, and others have underlined that the impact of climate change is anticipated to result in an increase in rainfall of 8 to 17% in Ahmedabad and 10 to 12% in Rajkot. In Ahmedabad and Rajkot, there will be more rainy days in July and August.
According to the report, both cities will see more heat in the next years. Recent years have seen a 10% increase in warm days in Rajkot and an 8–10% increase in warm days in Ahmedabad.
According to Dutt and Manjusha Mukherjee's projection, the number of warm days will rise by 53% in Rajkot and 45% in Ahmedabad during the next few years. The number of cold days will decline in both cities.
In Ahmedabad district, which makes only 4% of the state's population, urban regions are home to up to 84 percent of the people. As a result, the built-up area has dramatically increased, from 140 sq km in 1990 to 212 sq km in 2017. Forest and agricultural land are being devoured by the growing urban region.
Due to climate change, Ahmedabad will have more rainy days in July and August while experiencing hotter summers. The average maximum temperature in 2030 is predicted to be 41.8 degrees Celsius in May, 40.2 degrees Celsius in April, and 36.8 degrees Celsius in March.
Experts have advised Ahmedabad district to expand its forest cover to 7% over the next ten years in order to avoid 8.47 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Currently, the district has 1.62 percent of its land covered in forest.
The district administrations and municipal corporations in Ahmedabad/Rajkot must reuse 100% of home waste water after proper treatment in both urban and rural areas if they are to face the climate challenges.
Sewage Treatment Plants experts have recommended switching from anaerobic to purely aerobic water treatment methods (STPs).
The paper also recommended moving toward vertical urban expansion, which will allow for more people per square metre while simultaneously preventing the loss of open space and agricultural land.

Gujarat's greenhouse gas emissions soar 78%; Ahmedabad heats up

Surat, Gujarat (The Hawk): An official in Gujarat's Surat city claimed on Monday that police had found 2.176 kg of MD pharmaceuticals and cash at a shop in the basement of a commercial complex.
A police officer got information that a drug dealer had hidden drugs in a store and a car in a commercial complex basement, according to an employee of the Amroli police station. It then conducted searches in shop number 29 and a vehicle parked in the complex's basement on Sunday night, recovering the drug haul and Rs 2,68,000 in cash from drug sales. The narcotics and cash found in the seizure are worth a total of Rs 2.17 crore.
Drug dealer Mubarak Bandiya has been detained by police in this regard. He is a history sheeter from Jambusar in the Bharuch district and was previously detained in connection with a prostitution case. According to reports, the suspect admitted to police after first questioning that Sharma, a drug dealer from Mumbai, supplies him with drugs. To apprehend the accused Sharma, Surat police have dispatched a squad to Mumbai.

Ahmedabad (The Hawk): In the past 12 hours, three accidents recorded from three Gujarati cities resulted in the deaths of four people, including two children.
Two toddlers were killed in a horrific accident that occurred in Surat city on Friday morning when a truck struck a two-wheeler that their mother was operating. She was on her way to drop off her two kids at school. The two kids, Happy and Samarth, both passed away instantly.
Omkar Chuadhary, a doctor at the Surat Government Hospital, told the media that three people were brought in, including two children wearing school uniforms who were both dead. The doctor informed them that their mother was in a serious state.
The truck driver fled the scene of the collision after leaving the vehicle.
On Friday morning, a college student was crushed beneath the rear wheels of the State transport vehicle in Mehsana town in another tragedy. According to an eyewitness, the driver began the bus as the student was attempting to board it, causing the kid to fall to the ground and be crushed under the wheels.
A automobile struck and killed a middle-aged pedestrian who was crossing the street in Bhavnagar city's hill park on Thursday. As a result of losing control of the steering, the driver ran over and killed the man. The car's driver sped away from the scene of the collision.

Gandhinagar (The Hawk): In Surat, a BJP corporator was detained for breaking the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Late on Friday night, Sharad Patil was taken into custody and later freed on bail.
After casting his ballot in the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections on Thursday, Patil urged voters to support the BJP.
J. S. Rana, an election official, said in his complaint that Patil had broken the MCC in polling booth 176 of the Udhana constituency based on a video tape he had obtained.
In order to prosecute the corporator, Surat Police used section 130 of the People's Representative Act.
The BJP candidate for Kalol (Panchmahal district), Fatehsinh Chauhan, can be seen campaigning for himself in Boriya and Chata village at another video that has gone popular on social media.

Bengaluru: Prohibitory orders have been clamped from Sunday 6 a.m. till Tuesday morning, in areas under four police station limits in the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate jurisdiction.
The curbs came following the murder of a man identified as Jaleel, a shopkeeper, in Katipalla near Surathkal, on Saturday night.
The prohibitory orders will remain in force till 6 a.m. on December 27, in Surathkal, Bajpe, Kavoor and Panambur police station limits.
As per the prohibitory order under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, issued by Commissioner of Police N. Shashi Kumar, assembly of five or more persons is banned.
Similarly, public meetings, jatha, processions, and carrying of firearms, explosives, and crackers are prohibited during the period. Raising provocative slogans and indulging in activities that hurt the sentiments of the people are also prohibited.
However, the notification signed on Sunday states that the prohibitory orders will not apply to Christmas celebrations, religious programmes and emergency services.
Police have been on the alert after 45-year-old Jaleel was stabbed by unidentified miscreants on Saturday night near Surathkal. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Taking place against the backdrop of the autorickshaw blast case in Mangaluru recently, the incident has heightened tensions in the area.
K. Ashraf, President, Dakshina Kannada Muslim Okkoota, alleged that the murder appears to be commissioned for gaining political mileage by inciting Muslims to take revenge. Urging the police to apprehend the guilty, he demanded that the chief minister should visit and console the family members of Jaleel.&nbsp;

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the party is preparing to file an appeal against the Gujarat trial court's verdict, which runs to 170 pages and is still being translated.
"We find the finding to be legally untenable and riddled with mistakes. No matter how much your government tries to silence free expression on matters of public importance, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party will not go quietly into the night "In a news conference, he explained.
Singhvi said the Congress has faith in the judiciary and will seek legal recourse to the Surat court ruling and gain relief, while stressing that even if this judgement is "erroneous", in-built corrective processes exist within the judicial system and "we will absolutely invoke them".
A reception was held for Rahul Gandhi at Delhi's domestic airport as he returned from Surat. Sources say that after being welcomed at the Delhi airport, some Congress MPs and leaders went to his Tughlaq Road mansion for a meeting.
According to Singhvi, the current government is using two distinct sets of strategies to silence dissent: one inside Parliament, and another outside Parliament, which has recently had an impact there as well. According to him, the government's third tactic is to "bring fraudulent, frivolous, and vexatious cases" in order to silence dissenting opinions.

Constitutional law expert and senior attorney Rakesh Dwivedi argued that a suspended sentence and stay of conviction are required to avoid disqualification as a lawmaker under the Representation of the People (RP) Act, citing the Supreme Court's 2013 and 2018 judgements in the Lily Thomas and Lok Prahari matters.
"The appellate court can suspend the conviction and the sentence and grant him bail. In that case there will be no disqualification," he added, "However the politicians must choose their words carefully to avoid getting entangled with law." But he cautioned that politicians should be careful with their language to avoid legal trouble."
