New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a man was stabbed to death in Delhi's Anand Parbat area by a group of boys after a scuffle broke out over Rs 10 for a cigarette. The deceased in the case was identified as Vijay while the accused were identified as Ravi, Jatin, Sonu Kumar and Ajay. A case was registered under 302 IPC after the police got the information about the incident on June 6, and all the accused were arrested in the case, according to the police. The post-mortem of the deceased was conducted and his body was handed over to his family. "With the help of CCTV cameras and secret informers, all four accused namely Ravi, Jatin, Sonu Kumar and Ajay were arrested," said the police.According to DCP central Shweta Chauhan, the accused disclosed during the investigation that on June 5, all four accused were coming from Upper Anand Parbat side and at HR road, they had an argument with the deceased who was sitting on a staircase over a cigarette. "Sonu (one of the accused) who lives in the same vicinity as Vijay (deceased), asked Vijay to give him Rs 10 for a cigarette. On refusal, the scuffle began resulting in the stabbing of the deceased by Sonu and his accomplices," said the police.—ANI

Toronto: A 21-year-old Canadian man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for stabbing an Indian national to death in an unprovoked attack in Nova Scotia province in 2021, a media report said.

Prabhjot Singh Katri, the 23-year-old who moved from India to Nova Scotia in 2017, was stabbed in the neck by Cameron James Prosper on September 5, 2021, as he was walking to his car after leaving a friend's apartment at 494 Robie St in Truro, the Global News reported.

Justice Jeffrey Hunt said the attack was "made without rational cause", but without intent to kill Katri.

"The family of the deceased has been devastated by his senseless death," he said. aceAn entire community was left shocked and hurting."

Prosper was initially charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter during a court appearance in December 2022.

Before his death, Katri was working at Layton's Taxi to support his mother back home.

The court heard that Prosper had been outside the building with Dylan Robert MacDonald when Katri left his friend's apartment to go home.

After Prosper stabbed Katri with a folding hunting knife, which was never recovered, the victim ran back to his friend's apartment, and his friends called the police.

The cop who responded to the scene found Katri "lying in a large pool of blood", with two males holding a cloth to his neck in an attempt to stem the bleeding.

Prosper and MacDonald fled the scene in the latter's white Honda Civic, and Katri was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Police arrested MacDonald who was initially charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact, driving to evade police, two counts of dangerous driving and obstruction of justice, the Global News reported.

He received a 14-month conditional sentence order and 12 months probation for obstructing justice, a $1,000 fine, a one-year license suspension, and a one-year vehicle prohibition order for dangerous driving.

Crown prosecutor Thomas Kayter had said in a hearing earlier this year that there is no evidence Prosper and Katri knew each other before the stabbing.

In addition, he said that there is no evidence that the crime was motivated by hate or racism.

"The motive remains unknown, and the evidence known to the Crown indicates that the violence was unprovoked, spontaneous and gratuitous insofar that Prabhjot Singh Katri did nothing to incite or provoke Cameron Prosper to violence," Kayter said in January 2023.

Katri's mother, who had flown from India for the May 12 hearing, described her son, a young student and taxi driver, as "innocent, and a very gentle person".

"I want to ask, why did you do it? Because of your actions a I will never be able to see his (Katri's) wedding, welcome his bride in my home, play with my grandchildren," she said in a victim impact statement.

"I am truly sorry, like, genuinely sorry about this... If I could go back in time I would change it," Prosper said, apologising to Katri's family.

In Canada, the maximum sentence for manslaughter is life in prison, and there is no minimum sentence for manslaughter unless a firearm is involved. IANS

New Delhi: A caretaker of a ‘DUSIB Toilet Complex’ in Central Delhi was found dead with stab injuries Monday, a police official said.  The deceased was identified as Pappu, a resident of Shastri Nagar in his 40s.  The police received a PCR call at around 6 a.m. regarding the incident at Holi Chowk, Baljeet Nagar, following which a team was immediately dispatched.
“Pappu was found lying dead with stab injuries. The deceased was caretaker of ‘DUSIB Toilet Complex’ . FSL and Crime teams have been called for inspection of the scene of crime and to preserve evidence,” said a senior police official.  “Special Wing of police are there to work upon the case and CCTV cameras in the vicinity are being scanned to gather information about the incident and the culprits."

New Delhi: Delhi Police apprehended three snatchers, including two juveniles, for stabbing a man to death after robbing him of his cash and mobile in northeast Delhi's Mandoli area, an official said on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Salman (25), a resident of Mandoli Extension, was stabbed multiple times on the left side of the abdomen by the accused, leading to his death.
Sharing the details, a senior police official said that a call regarding the incident was received at 6:58 a.m on September 1, regarding a body near Mandoli crematorium.&nbsp;
"A case was registered, and the investigation was initiated," said the official.
During the investigation, police apprehended one Abhishek Thakur (21) and two juveniles, both aged 17-years, all residents of the Nand Nagri area. On interrogation, it was revealed that the motive behind the murder was robbery.
"Thakur and his three other associates waylaid the victim on a lonely stretch near Shamshan Ghat in Mandoli. They attempted to rob him. When he resisted, one accused held the victim in a chokehold from behind, while Thakur stabbed him multiple times. They robbed the victim of his phone and some cash (about Rs 500) and fled from the scene," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey.
After committing the murder, they took an auto-rickshaw and reached Narela, where they stayed at a relative’s house. "Thakur sold the stolen phone to an unsuspecting buyer for Rs 1600 the next day," said the DCP.
The official mentioned that the deceased used to run a water kiosk near Meet Nagar Fatak, Jyoti Nagar.
"He spoke with his mother at about 10:30 p.m. on August 31 night. After that, he could not be contacted. His phone and some cash were missing. His wife and son live in the village in Uttar Pradesh," said the DCP.
"Efforts are being made to apprehend the fourth associate, who is also a minor. A blood-stained knife, blood-stained clothes, and the stolen phone have been recovered," the official added.&nbsp;

Bengaluru: A young woman stabbed her live-in partner to death in Bengaluru, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in Hulimavu police station limits on Tuesday.
The woman is identified as Renuka, 24, from Belagavi and the deceased as Javed, 29, from Kerala.
According to police, Renuka and Javed, who repaired cell phones, lived together at a service apartment in Akshaya Nagar. Both quarreled often and on Tuesday, had a big fight over some issue. In a fit of rage, Renuka had stabbed Javed in the chest with a knife.
Though there was an attempt to shift Javed to the hospital immediately, he succumbed to injuries on the way.
The police have registered a case in this regard and taken Renuka into custody. Further details regarding the incident are yet to emerge.&nbsp;

Prayagraj: Two students of Class 12 from a convent school were stabbed by a group of miscreants outside their school on Sadar Patel Marg in Civil Lines of Uttar Pradesh’ Prayagraj, said officials. The incident happened on Wednesday.  The injured students have been admitted to the SRN hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger. Meanwhile, other students and passersby thrashed one of the alleged attackers who was also admitted to the hospital.  Police have detained three persons, including the prime accused, in connection with the incident.  DCP (city) Deepak Bhuker said the police have detained three youths, including the prime accused, a 19-year-old resident of Badshahi Mandi, who, along with his accomplices had arrived to settle some score with one of the two students who were attacked.  The DCP said, “It came to light that the girlfriend of the prime accused had asked him to warn one of the two students against talking to her younger sister’.  On Wednesday, the accused and his accomplices arrived outside the school and there was a heated argument, in the middle of which, the accused stabbed the student and his friend with a knife.

New Delhi: Three people were arrested in Delhi on Saturday in connection with stabbing a man following a dispute, a police official said.
According to the official, the Nabi Karim police station received a PCR call at around 2.45 a.m. regarding a stabbing incident in the Prem Nagar area.
A police team rushed to the spot and shifted the 30-year-old injured victim, Deepak, to thehospital.
“On enquiry, the identity of the injured was established as Deepak, a resident of Multani Dhanda. Deepak is ‘Bad Character’ of Paharganj police station. It further emerged that he was attacked by three persons (his friend and associates) which resulted in an injury on his thigh,” the police official said.
The accused identified as Vishal (31), Himanshu (29), and Ritik (23) were arrested and the weapon of offence has also been recovered.
“Ritik and Deepak were friends but a few days back they had a dispute between them and consequent to that Ritik attacked Deepak along with his associates to teach Deepak a lesson,” said the official.
“Deepak had moved to Nabi Karim a few days ago and was living with one Pooja. Deepak is already married and Pooja has also claimed that she had married Deepak five days ago.”&nbsp;

New Delhi: A group of individuals attacked a man and his wife inside their home in southeast Delhi, during which the former was stabbed to death, a police official said on Saturday, adding that three accused have been arrested and a juvenile detained in connection.
According to the police. the three arrested persons were identified as Raju Patra (26), Ravi (19), Shambu (26)
The identity of the17-year-old juvenile has not been public, while a manhunt is currently underway for two more absconding accused.
At 9.42 p.m. on Friday night, the Sarita Vihar police station received a PCR call regarding a stabbing incident.
A police team which rushed to the spot discovered that the victim, Arvind Mandal, a resident of Aali Vihar, got into an altercation with a man named Manoj Haldar on Friday evening while he was returning home with his son.
The victim had an earlier dispute with Haldar, police said.
“The quarrel the previous day had been over the parking of Arvind’s motorcycle,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Rajesh Deo.
However, the issue was resolved, and Arvind, along with his son, proceeded home.
On Friday night at about 9.30 p.m., 5-6 individuals arrived on motorcycles at Arvind’s residence and attacked him and his wife, Rakha, with sharp-edged weapons.
“During the incident, Arvind sustained serious injuries as the assailants stabbed him in the chest and hand, while Arvind’s wife suffered an injury to her forehead. Arvind subsequently passed away during treatment at the hospital,” the DCP added.

New Delhi: An apparently inebriated 16-year-old stabbed another teen more than 55 times, slit his throat, dragged the body through the street and did a jig while he carried out the grisly crime in east Delhi’s Welcome colony earlier this week, police said on Thursday.
Some of the horrifying details of the killing in Janta Mazdoor Colony on Tuesday were captured on CCTV, the 2.23 minute footage also showing the accused threatening those around him.  The accused, who was taken into police custody on Wednesday morning and has confessed, did not know the 17-year-old who he had approached for money to buy biryani, officials said.
"We have already recovered the weapon used for murder. We are investigating from where he procured the knife," Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey said.  The crime took place around 11.15 pm on Tuesday. The victim was rushed to hospital but died on the way.  The CCTV footage shows the accused teen dragging a person through a narrow bylane and going on a stabbing spree.  "He did not stop there. He was seen dancing while doing the gruesome act. A person tried to open a door to see what was happening, but the accused threatened him by brandishing a knife," an official investigating the crime said.  It all started when the victim refused to buy biryani for the accused, apparently sending him into a wild rage. There was a verbal spat, which soon turned into a scuffle.  "The accused overpowered the victim who was 17 years old and a resident of Jafrabad. He first choked him till he was unconscious and took out a mini knife out of his pocket and stabbed him multiple times. He then dragged him to a bylane where he continued to stab him on his face, neck, back, beneath eyes more than 55 times,” the official said.  Detailing the crime, he added that the accused was seen shouting at people to stay away.  “The accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of incident," said the investigator.  It did not end there.  "We were also taken aback... the accused after the entire act holds the lifeless body by the hair and drags him back to the same narrow area. He robbed Rs 350 from the victim and fled. We have already apprehended the accused, who had confessed and weapon of murder has been recovered," an investigator said.  "The CCTV footage helped us for the identification of the accused who was arrested immediately by police team," said the DCP Tirkey.

The disturbing scene concludes with the assailant standing over the body and engaging in a macabre dance.  The incident took place at Janta Mazdoor Colony in North-East Delhi's Welcome area.  "The reason behind murder was robbery. The boy first choked the victim and when he fell unconscious, he stabbed him multiple times before robbing him of Rs 350," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East), Joy Tirkey.  "The victim was taken to GTB Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival," he added.

Arizona [US]: Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted in the 2020 killing of George Floyd, which had sparked the massive 'Black Lives Matter' protest, was stabbed at a federal prison in Arizona, New York Times reported citing two people familiar with the situation. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate at the Tucson prison was stabbed at 12:30 pm (local time) on Friday, though the agency's statement did not identify Chauvin, 47, by name.
No other inmates or prison staff were injured, and the situation was quickly contained, NYT reported citing people familiar with the situation. Emergency medical technicians "initiated lifesaving measures" before transporting the inmate to a local hospital "for further treatment and evaluation," bureau officials said in a statement. No details were immediately available on his condition, but one of the people with knowledge of the incident said that Chauvin survived the attack. Chauvin was serving a sentence of just over two decades in federal prison after he was convicted of state murder charges and a federal charge of violating the constitutional rights of Floyd. Chauvin's lawyers did not respond to requests for comment. According to New York Times, Chauvin who is white in colour had knelt on Floyd, who is black in colour, for nine and a half minutes in May 2020 as Floyd lay handcuffed, face down, on a South Minneapolis street corner.  The killing of Floyd, 46, a security guard and former rapper, was captured on video by a teenager, and the footage ricocheted around the world while people were isolating amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The killing set off the largest protests of a generation, against police violence and racism, and led to a high-profile, televised trial in which Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder in April 2021. Three other officers who were at the scene where Floyd was killed were also later convicted of violating Floyd's rights. Chauvin had sought to appeal his conviction, the Supreme Court had rejected his efforts this week, New York Times reported. Notably, part of Chauvin's plea deal with prosecutors in his federal case was that he would be allowed to serve his sentence in a federal prison, which is generally considered safer than a state prison.  However, there have been several other high-profile attacks on federal prisoners in recent years, including the stabbing earlier this year of Larry Nassar, who had been convicted of sexually abusing young gymnasts, and the killing in 2018 of James (Whitey) Bulger, the mobster who was murdered in a West Virginia prison. According to New York Times, the Bureau of Prisons has been grappling with a widespread shortage of corrections officers and has relied on teachers, case managers, counselors, facilities workers and secretaries to fill shifts. About 21 per cent of the 20,446 positions for corrections officers funded by Congress -- 4,293 guards -- were unfilled in September 2022, according to a report in March 2023 by the Justice Department's inspector general's office.
