But now tech companies like Facebook and YouTube use algorithms to continuously remove fake news from their platforms. Also, WhatsApp has set a limit for forwarding messages, to limit the spread of fake news.In such an environment, the government should take the initiative to appraise all sections of the public about the realities of this information war and develop a consensus to fight this undeclared war. Also, strict action should be taken against those who spread fake news. Italy, for example, has experimentally added 'detection of fake news to the school curriculum. India should also give serious emphasis on cyber security, internet education, and fake news education in the educational curriculum at all levels.&nbsp;The news being spread using chatbots and other software should be automatically selected for a special screening. The government should prepare a draft on the issues of controlling fake news. The government should have an independent agency to verify the data being circulated on social and other media. The agency should be entrusted with the task of presenting actual facts and figures.An ombudsman should institute fake news complaints and initiate immediate action. Social media websites should be made accountable for such activities so that it becomes their responsibility to better control the spread of fake news. Artificial intelligence techniques, especially machine learning and natural language processing, can be leveraged to tackle the problem of fake news.Fake news affects the freedom of expression and informed choices of the citizens of the country, thereby hijacking democracy. It is therefore of utmost importance that there is a collective effort of all the stakeholders involved to tackle this menace in a comprehensive manner. Beijing: Chinese regulators have moved to ban minors from live-streaming on various social media platforms to protect their physical and mental health, the media reported on Monday.The new rules completely prohibit those under 16 from live-streaming, while users aged between 16 and 18 must obtain permission from their parents or guardians before doing live streams, reports the South China Morning Post."Internet platforms should a strictly implement the real-name registration requirement, and prohibit offering minors' tipping services such as cash top-up, gift purchase, and online payment," according to a statement issued by the regulators.Most popular live-streaming platforms are TikTok's app Douyin, Alibaba Group's Taobao Live, and Kuaishou Technology's short video platform.The new requirements have been issued by four regulators, including the National Radio and Television Administration and the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). "If platforms are found to violate the above requirements, measures including suspension of the tipping feature and shutting down of the live-streaming business could be put in place," the regulators mentioned.Regulators said they want Big Tech to upgrade their "youth mode" to protect teenagers from gaming addiction and inappropriate content. Last year, the regulators took action to only allow teenagers to play online games for three hours per week. Mumbai: The Mumbai police have arrested a Pune-based man, said to be a social media influencer, on extortion charge for allegedly demanding over Rs 7 lakh from a woman in suburban Bandra, an official said on Thursday. According to the BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex) police station official, the man, Shyam Bhau Shinde, was nabbed on Tuesday after an FIR was lodged against him for allegedly trying to extort money from the woman. Owing to his habit of wearing heavy gold ornaments, Shinde is locally known as a goldman .During probe, it came to light that Shinde faces half a dozen extortion cases in Pune, the official said, adding he is also known as a social media influencer. "We have arrested him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including extortion, and further investigation was underway," he added.—PTI

Bhatti was later arrested, he said. Facing a backlash on social media, Bhatti had sought to clarify his tweet with another tweet saying, "I did not target any religion and why should I target when the matter is in court."A few days ago, Delhi University Associate Professor Ratan Lal was arrested for his alleged objectionable social media post on claims of a Shivling at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi. He was granted bail a day later.On May 16, a local court in Varanasi directed the district administration to seal a spot in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex after counsels representing the Hindu petitioners claimed that a Shivling was found during a court-mandated videography survey. A mosque management committee spokesperson disputed the claim, telling a television channel that the object was part of a "fountain".A day later, the top court directed the district magistrate of Varanasi to ensure the protection of an area inside the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri complex where a Shivling was said to have been found and allowed Muslims to offer 'namaz' and perform "religious observances".—PTI

Delhi: Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways aims for robust investor confidence by&nbsp;underpinning strong vision and leadership from long term strategic infrastructure plan including a pipeline of investable projects that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable and practically deliverable. One of those visionary initiatives is capital intensive project at Paradip port which will transform the port into a world-class modern port which will have capability to handle capsize vessel. The decision has been taken with a futuristic approach as Prime Minister has been laying emphasis on development of eastern states.The project involves deepening and optimization of inner harbour facilities including development of western dock on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis under Public-Private Partnership (PPP)mode at Paradip Port. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 3,004.63 crore. This includes development of the new Western Dock on BOT basis and capital dredging by the selected concessionaire at a cost of Rs 2,040 crore and Rs 352.13 crore respectively; and Paradip Port’s investment will be to the tune of Rs 612.50 crore towards providing Common Supporting Project Infrastructure.Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal&nbsp;said the success of the project is a milestone towards Paradip Port becoming a Mega Port. New Delhi: In the latest string of layoffs in the funding winter, conglomerate Indiabulls' social commerce platform Yaari has reportedly laid off nearly 150 employees which makes 60 per cent of its workforce.According to a report in the leading startup news coverage portal Inc42, Yaari is likely to be merged with another Indiabulls-backed entity called 'Dhani', which is an ecommerce platform.The layoffs reportedly occurred in the last week of April across supply support, customer support, business development and marketing verticals, and the company allegedly did not extend any severance package or health benefits to those impacted by the round of layoff. The company was yet to react to the report that came out on Tuesday. Yaari is a social commerce marketplace for customised consumer products. Yaari Digital Integrated Services launched the social commerce marketplace in March last year, to enable small businesses and resellers to start their business online via social channels such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram etc.The Yaari app was built to have a variety of products to choose from, that the individual resellers can resell among their social contacts. The app also provides aspiring entrepreneurs, especially men, the ease to start an online business from home by taking away risk of inventory management, payments and even order fulfilment. The latest round of layoffs came as the Indian startup ecosystem is reeling under severe tremors owing to global macro-economic factors like the war, high inflation, rising interest rates and China lockdowns. To date, over 8,000 startup employees have lost their jobs in India -- led by edtech companies -- and the list is only growing. Although, the figure may be more if we take contractual workers into the account. The project is jointly funded Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), India, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), The bilateral collaborative research will focus on two selected study sites including Haridwar in India and Kanagawa prefecture in Japan respectively. Haridwar is a holy Hindu pilgrimage center, which later became a prominent industrial hub after the formation of the Uttarakhand State in 2000 and the creation of SIIDCUL (State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation Uttarakhand Limited) in 2002.The first project workshop was conducted in the Committee Room, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Roorkee on June 27, 2022.The objective of the workshop is to bring experts and key stakeholders into a common platform in order to discuss the social and environmental impact of COVID-19 pandemic-induced reverse migration on the urban-rural continuum and how reverse migration can be translated intoan opportunity foraddressing the urban-rural dichotomy. Udaipur: A gruesome murder in broad daylight reported from a crowded street in Udaipur on Tuesday has triggered tension in the Lake City after the murderers posted a video on social media claiming to teach a lesson to the victim for putting up a social media post.As per the police, the victim, a tailor by profession, was attacked by a sharp-edged weapon. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media, which is being termed as a Taliban-style murder.Sources said that the victim was hacked to death for supporting now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma in a social media post over her controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammed.The police have reached the spot and further investigation is underway. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has appealed to the people to maintain peace."I condemn the heinous murder in Udaipur. Strict action will be taken against all those involved in the crime and the police will go to the bottom of the case. I appeal to all the parties to maintain peace. Jaipur: The video of the dramatic arrest of two accused in Udaipur tailor’s murder namely, Ghaus Mohammad and Riyaz Jabbar, from Bhima area of Rajsamand district, is going viral on the social media.The event of the capture of these killers is quite dramatic. Both tried their best to escape, but eventually got caught in the trap laid by the police. The video which has surfaced on social media shows that as soon as the accused were caught, the police thrashed them black and blue.The sequence of arrest of these criminals starts from a police hunt for the accused.Rajsamand police received information that both accused had fled on a bike towards Bhim-Devgarh area. Their location was immediately traced. The area outside Dak Bungalow on National Highway-8 was blocked.Seeing the police here, the two accused entered Bhim-Devgarh. Riding on their bike, they escaped through the town and came on the highway in front of the college via Badnore intersection. From here they were going towards Ajmer when the Bhima town police, chasing the accused, caught both of them at Adawala turn around 6.30 p.m.As soon as the information of both of them being near Rajsamand came, the SP left Udaipur on a bike wearing a helmet and reached Bhim-Devgarh area of Rajsamand. The police of Udaipur and adjoining districts were active since the incident. Barricading was set up to check all the vehicles. A total of ten police teams were on the chase for the killers.Soon after seeing the police, both the accused — Ghaus Mohammad and Riyaz Jabbar started running, but were caught on the road. Amethi: Three persons have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district after a video clip showing them, allegedly attacking a monkey, went viral on social media, police said.Inspector In-charge of Piparpur police station, Dhirendra Singh Yadav said that the three youths identified as Sangam, Radhe and Suraj have been arrested.He added that the three youth were booked under Indian Penal Code Section 147 for causing nuisance, Section 223 for trying to escape from police custody and Section 429 for causing mischief by killing or maiming an animal. The police officer said the FIR was lodged on the complaint of one Devendra Singh, who tried to rescue the monkey but was chased away by the three youth. According to police, the incident took place near a beer shop at Durgapur market under Piparpur police circle of Amethi district. The monkey was apparently injured and sitting on the roadside near the beer shop when three youth came out of the shop in an inebriated state.They started throwing stones at the monkey who could not move due to injuries. They kept attacking the animal till it became motionless.The police informed the Forest department and they disposed of the carcass. The Forest department officers were also likely to register an FIR under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. —IANS

Dehradun: Noted social worker and Padma Shri awardee Avdhash Kaushal died at a private hospital here early on Tuesday following a prolonged illness. He was 87.Kaushal who founded an NGO named Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra fought for human rights and the conservation of the environment.He had been ailing for a long time and his vital organs had stopped working since Monday. He breathed his last at 5 am on Tuesday, the social worker"s daughter-in-law Rushi Kaushal said.Expressing grief over Avdhash Kaushal"s demise, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he symbolised courage and always fought for social issues.Kaushal is credited with bringing mining activities to an end in Mussoorie in the 1980s. This arrested the damage caused to its fragile ecology.He was also considered a messiah of the nomadic Gujjar tribe living in the forests of Rajaji and Corbett Tiger reserves as he fought a prolonged administrative and legal battle for their rights and even went to jail during the course of his struggle in 2015.Kaushal also raised his voice against the system of bonded labour in the tribal-dominated Jaunsar Bavar region. Varanasi: The authorities had from Tuesday&nbsp;started charging Rs 10 for entry to the Khidkiya Ghat, also called Namo Ghat because of three large sculptures in the form of hands folded in a "namaste". The decision was taken back on Wednesday after directions from higher officials, Varanasi Samart City project PRO Shakhambhari Nandan said.&nbsp;He said the entry fee was fixed so that unscrupulous elements do not enter the ghat and the amount was to be spent on its maintenance.Earlier, Congress leader and former MLA Ajay Rai criticised the government for the entry fee, saying now in the prime minister's constituency, tax will be imposed for roaming on ghats and in parks.He accused the government of "commercialising faith" after "ruining" the country's economy. "People of Kashi will give you a reply for this," he added.Reacting to the government's decision of levying entry fee, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Manoj Rai said earlier in the day,"Now without paying, people won't be able to reach Maa Ganga for religious works. As per the rule 4(7) of the said Rules, the significant social media intermediaries shall enable users to voluntarily verify their accounts and such users’ accounts shall be provided with visible marks of verification.This information was given by the Minister of State for Electronics &amp; Information Technology, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.

Washington: A recent study found that young people who eat healthy breakfasts at home have higher psychosocial health. While earlier research has indicated the importance of a nutritious breakfast, this is the first study to investigate the reported effects of whether or not children eat breakfast, as well as where and what they consume. These findings offer useful insights and advice for parents and their children.
The findings of the research were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.
"Our results suggest that it is not only important to eat breakfast, but it's also important where young people eat breakfast and what they eat," said first author Dr. Jose Francisco Lopez-Gil of the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca, Spain. "Skipping breakfast or eating breakfast away from home is associated with increased likelihood of psychosocial behavioral problems in children and adolescents. Similarly, consumption of certain foods/drinks are associated with higher (eg, processed meat) or lower (eg, dairies, cereals) odds of psychosocial behavioral problems."
Breakfast matters
In this study, Lopez-Gil and his collaborators analyzed data from the 2017 Spanish National Health Survey. This survey included questionnaires both about breakfast habits as well as children's psychosocial health, which included characteristics such as self-esteem, mood, and anxiety. The questionnaires were completed by the children's parents, or guardians, and the results included a total of 3,772 Spanish residents between the ages of four and 14.
Among the most important results, Lopez-Gil and the team found that eating breakfast away from home was nearly as detrimental as skipping the meal entirely. The authors suggest that this may be because meals away from home are frequently less nutritious than those prepared at home.
The results also showed that coffee, milk, tea, chocolate, cocoa, yogurt, bread, toast, cereals, and pastries were all associated with lower chances of behavioral problems. Surprisingly, eggs, cheese, and ham were linked with higher risks of such issues.
Beyond nutrition
Although this study is limited to Spain, these findings are consistent with research performed elsewhere. The availability of nutritious breakfasts at schools would likely influence the results in some locations.
But other factors, such as the social and family support that young people can receive during breakfast at home, may also play a role in the observed benefits. The authors emphasize the need for further studies to understand the cause-and-effect relationships behind their observations, but they still suggest the usefulness of these results.
"The fact that eating breakfast away from home is associated with greater psychosocial health problems is a novel aspect of our study," said Lopez-Gil. "Our findings reinforce the need to promote not only breakfast as part of a healthy lifestyle routine, but also that it should be eaten at home. Also, to prevent psychosocial health problems, a breakfast that includes dairy and/or cereals, and minimizes certain animal foods high in saturated fat/cholesterol, could help to decrease psychosocial health problems in young people." —ANI
