I was here a week before and even prepared back home. Once I was here and got out in the first innings, I was so disappointed. But I knew that I was batting well and wanted a big one. So, if it's your first game and you get a double hundred, it sets you up for the rest of the season," said Pujara in an interview on Sussex's Youtube channel.Through his unbeaten 201 on his debut for Sussex, Pujara broke a run of 52 first-class innings without a century. His last first-class century came in January 2020 when he made a mammoth 248 against Karnataka in an Elite Group B match of Ranji Trophy 2019/20 season in Rajkot.Between the two hundreds, Pujara scored 1518 runs in the red-ball format at an average of 30.36, including 14 half-centuries.It was a perfect rescue act stitched by Pujara after Sussex were bowled out for 174 in 56.4 overs in the first innings, where the 34-year-old was bowled out for six. But in the second innings, Pujara brought his A-game out to save the match for Sussex alongside Haines."The day before yesterday, I spoke to the guys and told them that, 'Look, we are in trouble but it was time that we showed our character and how the team spirit is'. Lucknow: A 13-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by four men over three days was sexually assaulted again by the station house officer of a police station where she had been left by her attackers, the police said on Wednesday.Five people have been arrested and an FIR filed against six, including the teen's aunt and the SHO of the Pali police station who is absconding. Besides, all the other policemen of the station have been taken away from active duty and sent to police lines.Deputy inspector general, Jhansi Jogendra Kumar has been asked to probe the matter and submit the report within 24 hours, officials said.As chilling details of the case came to light, the opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress highlighted the vulnerability of women and asked where they should go to file their complaint and whom should they trust.According to the mother of the multiple-rape survivor, her daughter was taken to Bhopal, about 240 km from Lalitpur, on April 22 by four men and raped there for three days.The men left the girl at the Pali police station, where she was again sexually attacked, she alleged.The girl narrated her ordeal during counselling at an NGO, which approached the superintendent of police.Following his intervention, an FIR was registered on Tuesday. ADG (law and order) Prasant Kumar added in Lucknow that the DIG has been told to stay in Lalitpur till the case is solved."While the SHO has been suspended, all policemen of Pali police station in Lalitpur have been sent to police lines," said Additional Director General of Police, Kanpur Zone, Bhanu Bhaskar.Attacking the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government over the incident, the Samajwadi Party said, "The biggest question in the BJP government is whom to trust and whom to not. Pilibhit: Uttar Pradesh police on Monday arrested three out of five people who allegedly threw acid on a couple in order to pressurise them to withdraw a case they had lodged against the sexual assault of their daughter.Superintendent of Police, Pilibhit, Dinesh Kumar P. said that the couple suffered severe burn injuries. They were taken to Pilibhit district hospital where they were referred to another hospital in critical condition.The accused were identified as Chhotelal, Ramkishan, Ajay, Guddu and Harishankar, said the police.&nbsp;"During the investigation, it came to light that the couple on May 6 lodged a case against their neighbour identified as Rajesh for sexually harassing their daughter in the Gajraula police station area. The family alleged that the local police tried to cover up the matter," said the police."The victim of the sexual harassment case was to give her statement before the magistrate on Monday. The accused tried to pressurise them to withdraw the case but the family insisted on taking action against the accused of their daughter's sexual harassment. Angered with this, five people in the early morning of Monday threw forcibly entered their house and threw acid on the couple," said the SSP.Gajraula Inspector Tejpal Singh and Suhas, Outpost Incharge Lokesh Kumar were immediately suspended for negligence, the SSP added.&nbsp;—ANI

Gurugram:&nbsp;Police here booked a man for allegedly sexually harassing a 16-year-old girl and then posting her pictures on social media.According to police, a Pataudi resident had alleged that their neighbour committed the crime.Following the complaint lodged by the girl's mother, an FIR was registered under the POCSO Act and the IT Act at the Pataudi police station.The accused is currently absconding and police are conducting raids to nab him, police said.According to the complaint, Safikul pressed her daughter for marriage and often misbehaved with her."Five days ago, when my daughter persistently refused the accused, Safikul clicked her pictures and posted them on Facebook," the complaint said alleging sexual harassment.Police said the accused is still on the run.—PTI

At 9.51 a.m., Sensex was 1.0 per cent or 513 points up at 53,307 points, whereas Nifty was 1.2 per cent or 185 points up at 15,967 points.The recent consistent decline was triggered as equity investors were concerned about the persistent high inflation globally and tightening monetary policy stance by several central banks. India’s retail inflation accelerated to 7.79 per cent in April due to high fuel and food costs. The inflation print remained above the tolerance limit of the central bank RBI for a fourth month in a row.Analysts expect inflation to be on the higher side in coming months too. In a bear phase there will be relief rallies, but such rallies are unlikely to sustain, given the relentless selling by FIIs, said V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.“It is rational to expect more FII selling, particularly when the market stages relief rallies. It is important to appreciate the fact that FIIs are selling not because they are bearish on India but because the US bond yields are attractive and the dollar is strengthening,” said Vijayakumar. New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the issuance of Aadhaar cards to sex workers based on a proforma certificate issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and observed that every person has a fundamental right to be treated with dignity.A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao said there should be no breach of the confidentiality of the sex workers and their identity should not be revealed. "Aadhaar cards shall be issued to sex workers on the basis of a proforma certificate issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and submitted by a gazetted officer at the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) or the project director of State AIDS Control Society along with the enrolment form," the bench also comprising Justices B R Gavai and A S Bopanna said.While passing the order, the bench observed that "every person has the right to be treated with dignity irrespective of activity. This should be kept in mind." UIDAI had earlier suggested to the top court that Aadhaar Card could be issued to sex workers without insisting on proof of identity, subject to their producing a certificate issued by a Gazetted Officer of NACO or a Gazetted Officer of Health Department of the respective State Governments/ Union Territory. The top court had directed states and Union Territories to continue with the process of identification of the sex workers who do not have any proof of identity and who are deprived of distribution of ration. "The State Governments shall take support of the Community Based Organisation and not merely rely on the lists prepared by NACO for the purpose of implementing the earlier directions issued by this Court. The bench had directed that authorities can take the assistance of NACO and state AIDS control societies which, in turn, will prepare a list of sex workers after verifying the information provided to them by the community-based organisations. A young woman was returning home from the market on Thursday night when a youth allegedly sexually harassed her. Several shopkeepers came forward in her support, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suraj Rai told PTI. The youth attacked one of the shopkeepers with a rod after which an argument broke out between the two communities, Rai said. The issue soon snowballed with the two groups attacking each other with lathis. One person each from both the sides sustained injuries in the fight, he said. Investigations are on and necessary action will be taken, the SP said. In protest against this incident, BJP leaders and people associated with Hindu organisations sat on a dharna in the night. The police rushed to the spot, held talks with the two sides and defused the situation, police said.—PTI

During the day, it zoomed 1,604.2 points or 3.03 per cent to 54,396.43. The broader NSE Nifty jumped 456.75 points or 2.89 per cent to finish at 16,266.15.All the Sensex firms ended in the green, with Dr Reddy's, Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, Nestle, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Sun Pharma, State Bank of India and HDFC emerging as the biggest gainers. The BSE benchmark had dived 1,416.30 points or 2.61 per cent to settle at 52,792.23 on Thursday. The NSE Nifty had tanked 430.90 points or 2.65 per cent to end at 15,809.40. Meanwhile, Asian markets in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo finished in the green. Equity exchanges in Europe were also trading with significant gains in the afternoon session.Stock markets in the US had ended lower on Thursday. International oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.11 per cent to $111.9 per barrel. New Delhi: Equity indices failed to hold on to morning gains on Tuesday, with the Sensex falling 236 points amid a sell-off in IT stocks and weak trends from global markets. The 30-share BSE benchmark opened higher but could not carry forward the momentum and declined 236 points or 0.43 per cent to settle at 54,052.61. During the day, it hit a low of 53,886.28 and a high of 54,524.37. New Delhi: Observing that human decency and dignity extend to sex workers and their children, the Supreme Court has directed police forces in all states and Union Territories to treat sex workers with dignity and not to abuse them, verbally or physically. Issuing a slew of directions, a bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna said the constitutional protection that is given to all individuals in this country shall be kept in mind by the authorities who have a duty under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956. Any sex worker who is a victim of sexual assault should be provided with all facilities available to a survivor of sexual assault, including immediate medical assistance, in accordance with law, it said."It has been noticed that the attitude of the police to sex workers is often brutal and violent. It is as if they are a class whose rights are not recognised. The police and other law enforcement agencies should be sensitised to the rights of sex workers who also enjoy all basic human rights and other rights guaranteed in the Constitution to all citizens. Police should treat all sex workers with dignity and should not abuse them, both verbally and physically, subject them to violence or coerce them into any sexual activity," the bench said.The court also said the Press Council of India should be urged to issue appropriate guidelines for the media to take utmost care not to reveal the identities of sex workers, during arrest, raid and rescue operations, whether as victims or accused and not to publish or telecast any photos that would result in disclosure of such identities."Besides, the newly introduced Section 354C, IPC which makes voyeurism a criminal offence, should be strictly enforced against electronic media, in order to prohibit telecasting photos of sex workers with their clients in the garb of capturing the rescue operation," it said.It also directed the state governments to do a survey of shelter homes so that cases of adult women who are detained against their will can be reviewed and processed for release in a time-bound manner."Measures that sex workers employ for their health and safety (e.g., use of condoms, etc.) must neither be construed as offences nor seen as evidence of commission of an offence."The Central Government and the State Governments, through National Legal Services Authority, State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority, should carry out workshops for educating the sex workers abut their rights vis-a-vis the legality of sex work, rights and obligations of the police and what is permitted/prohibited under the law. Sex workers can also be informed as to how they can get access to the judicial system to enforce their rights and prevent unnecessary harassment at the hands of traffickers or police," the bench said.The apex court passed the directions on recommendations of a panel formed for the rehabilitation of sex workers.The top court was also informed that the Government of India has certain&nbsp;reservations in respect of the recommendation that sex workers are entitled to equal protection of the law and the police must refrain from interfering or&nbsp;taking any criminal action.The bench said that every individual in this country has a right to a dignified life under Article 21 of the Constitution."The constitutional protection that is given to all individuals in this country shall be kept in mind by the authorities who have a duty under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956. The other recommendations that are made by the panel shall be taken up after summer vacation," the bench said.
